‘A good conversation’ – Marc Casado reveals talks with Hansi Flick over his Barcelona future
Madrid, Spain - February 12: Hansi Flick, head coach of FC Barcelona and Marc Casado of FC Barcelona gestures during the Copa Del Rey match between Atletico de Madrid and FC Barcelona at Riyadh Air Metropolitano on February 12, 2026 in Madrid, Spain. (Photo by Manu Reino/DeFodi Images/DeFodi via Getty Images) | DeFodi Images via Getty Images Marc Casado says he’s already spoken with Barcelona boss Hansi Flick about his future amid talk that he will be sold by the club this summer. The midfielder has made it clear that his preference is to stay at the Camp Nou, but he’s also aware that he is one of seven midfielders battling for a starting spot at present. Casado and Flick spoke at the end of the previous campaign and the midfielder told La Vanguardia: “It was a good conversation. As long as the club and the manager want me, I’ll give my all to help the team.” Flick is said to have told Casado “to consider a move to get more playing time” but the 22-year-old will wait until the end of pre-season before making a final decision. “If I ever leave, I’d definitely like to come back. As long as the club and the coach want me, my first choice will be Barça,” he added. Casado seems to have attracted plenty of interest already but one thing seems clear – he’s in absolutely no rush to leave the club he joined when he was just 13.

Thiago Pitarch focused on Real Madrid future after breakthrough year
DENBIGH, WALES - JULY 04: Thiago Pitarch of Spain during the UEFA European Under-19 Championship 2026 match between Spain and Germany on July 04, 2026 in Denbigh, Wales. (Photo by James Gill - Danehouse/Getty Images) | Getty Images Real Madrid midfielder Thiago Pitarch has reflected on his rapid rise through the club’s ranks, his experiences training alongside the first team, and his ambitions for the future in an interview with AS. After progressing from Juvenil A to Castilla and earning opportunities to train with the senior squad, Pitarch said he has tried to remain grounded throughout his development. “I started with the Juvenil A team and thought, ‘I’ll see how it goes.’ Then I started playing well with Castilla and later I began training with the first team. I’ve taken it all very calmly. I still surround myself with the same people. The only thing that matters to me is enjoying playing football.” The midfielder admitted that adapting to the level at Real Madrid is a challenge, but believes every opportunity is a chance to grow. “At Real Madrid, the best players in the world play, and you have to adapt. The important thing there was to enjoy every match and learn a lot from them because you never know when it might be your last.” Pitarch also praised coach Álvaro Arbeloa and national team coach Gallardo for the confidence they have shown in him. “I have a very good relationship with both Arbeloa and Gallardo. They’ve given me all the confidence they could, and I try to repay that on the field. It’s very important for a player to have so much confidence in his coaches.” Asked about speculation surrounding his future under José Mourinho, Pitarch insisted his attention remains solely on Spain’s upcoming European Championship final. “Mourinho has not contacted me yet. I’m focused on the European Championship final and that’s all I’m thinking about. We’ll see what happens after that.” Although he has received messages of support from Real Madrid, he revealed he is trying not to be distracted. “I’ve spoken to several people at the club who wished me luck in the final, but honestly, I’m not really checking my phone. I’m really enjoying the experience with my teammates because you never know when you’ll get another chance like this.” Despite acknowledging the fierce competition for places at the Santiago Bernabéu, Pitarch believes the academy continues to prepare players to step up whenever they are called upon. “The best players in the world play for Real Madrid, which makes it harder to break into the first team, but we’re proving that when we get the chance, we’re ready. That’s why they train us in the youth academy, to help the first team.” The 18-year-old also named the midfielders who have inspired his game, highlighting two club legends as well as one current Madrid star. “I’ve always admired quality midfielders like Kroos and Modric, and the midfielders of Iniesta’s Spain. Now I really like Bellingham.” Training alongside Real Madrid’s biggest names was initially overwhelming, he admitted, before becoming part of his daily routine. “The first few days with the Real Madrid stars are a bit dazzling; it feels like you’re wearing virtual reality glasses. But little by little you get used to it and it becomes second nature.” Pitarch reserved special praise for the first-team players who welcomed him, singling out several Spaniards and particularly Brahim Díaz. “Everyone, I have no complaints about anyone. They’re all exceptional teammates. In the first few days, the Spaniards like Carvajal, Brahim, and Carreras were very attentive. Brahim helped me a lot from day one, and he’s a teammate I talk to quite often.” Looking ahead, the midfielder’s objectives are clear: stay healthy, continue playing at the highest level, and keep competing in Europe’s biggest competition. “My priority is to avoid injury. I also want to continue enjoying playing football in the top division and, if possible, keep playing in the Champions League.”

With the head coach having released the handbrake, his side were far superior compared with four years ago in Qatar against the same opponents The scorelines may have been exactly the same, but the stylistic gulf in France’s two World Cup knockout performances against Morocco could not have been greater. As a one-two punch from Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé sent the team into this year’s semi-finals, the 57-year-old’s tactical reinvention was once again vindicated. Continue reading...

OFFICIAL: Real Madrid reject comments by Paraguayan senator against Mbappé
Real Madrid have published an official statement rejecting the comments made by Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla against their star Kylian Mbappé. Real Madrid C. ‘It’s a great pain’ – Raphinha speaks out after Brazil’s World Cup 2026 exit
(Photo by Richard Sellers/Sportsphoto/Allstar via Getty Images) | Getty Images Barcelona star Raphinha has reflected on Brazil’s exit from World Cup 2026 after seeing their dreams ended in the last 16 by Norway. Raphinha only played twice at the World Cup due to injury and says the early exit from the competition is a painful one to take. “It is a great pain that we have not reached where we dreamed of together, you and us. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out how we imagined. It’s part of the sport. The defeat won’t always be what we want, but the pride of representing Brazil and of fighting to the end will never be erased. And for all our children who cry with us today, don’t give up on your dreams. Perhaps you have watched this Cup imagining what it would be like to be there one day. Keep that dream in your heart,” he wrote on Instagram. “You are our next generation. Keep believing, training, persevering and loving football. It’s dreams that Brazil has always lived, and it will be the dreams of you that will continue to write the history of our national team. I am honored to be Brazilian and to be part of this selection. Wearing this shirt and representing our country is a privilege that I will take with me forever. Regardless of the outcome, being part of this story is something I am extremely proud of.” View this post on Instagram Raphinha will now enjoy a break before returning to pre-season with Barcelona. The Catalans will be hoping that the forward can put his injury problems behind in 2026-27 and rediscover the inspirational form that has seen him become of the best players in the world during his time at Camp Nou.

Real Madrid’s La Liga opener against Real Sociedad will be postponed
Real Madrid’s home match and La Liga opener against Real Sociedad initially scheduled for August 15th will be postponed due to either Brahim or Mbappé, Tchouameni and Konaté playing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Semifinals. “On the opening day, teams with players who advanced to the semifinals or finals of major competitions—in this instance, the World Cup—would play their matches during the final midweek slot. The remaining teams would compete. Statistically, it appears unlikely that Barcelona and Real Madrid would compete on the weekend of August 16, given player commitments to international duties. Athletic Bilbao, in particular, has numerous players with the Spanish national team, who are anticipated to reach at least the semifinals or final. However, other clubs could commence their seasons, with an estimated six to seven matches scheduled for that weekend,” said La Liga president Javier Tebas when asked about the situation. It is expected that Real Madrid and Real Sociedad will instead play this game on August 26th.

José Mourinho will have some key players from the start of pre-season
Real Madrid head coach José Mourinho appeared on the ‘Beast Mode On’ podcast recently and jokingly suggested that he would like all of his Real Madrid players to be eliminated quickly from the World Cup, so that they can have a full pre-season. In reality, his manifestation has come true, even if partially. Among Real Madrid players, Arda Güler and Fede Valverde were knocked out in the group stage. Antonio Rüdiger and Denzel Dumfries were knocked out in the round of 32. Real Madrid’s pre-season is scheduled to start in the second week of July. The first LaLiga fixture is scheduled for mid-August. The players who are still in the World Cup, such as Jude Bellingham, Brahim Diaz, Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr., and Endrick – are expected to have extended holidays to decompress after the World Cup. Mourinho should get players like Álvaro Carreras, Raúl Asencio, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Eduardo Camavinga, Güler, Valverde, Rüdiger, Dumfries, and Franco Mastantuono to start his pre-season camp.

Marc Cucurella reveals Mourinho contact, Florentino request, and Real Madrid excitement
ZAPOPAN, MEXICO - JUNE 26: Marc Cucurella #24 of Spain looks on during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match between Uruguay and Spain at Guadalajara Stadium on June 26, 2026 in Zapopan, Mexico. (Photo by Ryan Pierse - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images) | FIFA via Getty Images Marc Cucurella has opened up about his impending move to Real Madrid, discussing José Mourinho, Florentino Pérez, the Spanish national team, and what awaits him at the Santiago Bernabéu in an extensive interview with AS. The Spain international admitted he is eager to begin the next chapter of his career. “I still haven’t fully processed it. My life is still the same. We’re with the national team and it feels like everything is unchanged because we’re isolated from the outside world. Hopefully that moment takes a while to arrive because it would mean we’re doing well here. But I’m looking forward to starting a new life, meeting my teammates, seeing the training ground and the Bernabéu. It’s a big change after so many years at Chelsea, but I’m excited to experience it.” Cucurella also revealed he has remained in contact with José Mourinho since agreeing to join Madrid. “We’ve stayed in touch. He congratulated me after the first victory and has sent me a few short messages. Staying in contact is always positive, and now I’m looking forward to meeting him in person and starting to work with him.” The 27-year-old also shared an amusing story involving Florentino Pérez before his unveiling. “I haven’t had the chance to speak with him. The only thing they told me was not to even think about putting on a Real Madrid shirt because the president wanted my first photo wearing the shirt to be with him. I’m happy to follow orders and start on the right foot. The presentation will be a special moment for me and my family.” Cucurella admitted hearing one of Florentino’s famous lines would be special. “Hearing him say that I was born to play for Real Madrid would be incredible.” Asked about the possibility of Enzo Fernández joining him in Madrid, he replied: “He congratulated me. We’re great friends and have built a very good relationship. If the rumors are true, I wish the best for my friend. If he wants to take that step, he’s welcome. I don’t know anything, we’ll see. Keep an eye on the news!” Looking ahead to future Clásicos against Lamine Yamal, the left-back insisted club rivalries will not affect friendships. “I’ll fight against Lamine in a Clásico, but when we’re with Spain everything will be exactly the same.” Finally, Cucurella had a message for Spain supporters ahead of the World Cup. “Keep believing in us. We want to make history and achieve something special. Maybe we didn’t start the tournament exactly how we wanted, but this team is highly motivated, very confident, and we’ll give everything we have to make the fans proud.”

The World Cup’s first knockout game set the bar high
Photo by Patrick T. Fallon / AFP via Getty Images The first-ever Round of 32 game in a World Cup took place in Los Angeles as South Africa and Canada battled for a place in the Last 16, and the other 30 teams in this round have work to do to top the fun we had on Sunday. Expectations were not very high for a meeting between a South African side that somehow found a way to sneak into the knockouts despite a very poor performance in the group stage and a Canadian team that lost the chance to play at home with a defeat in the group stage finale and came into the game without the injured Ismaël Koné and with Alphonso Davies only fit enough to play the final 20 minutes. But the match still delivered, with a really good tactical battle between a high-intensity, high-pressing Canada against a short-passing, patient South Africa. The stadium eventually grew tired of watching the Bafana Bafana pass the ball back to goalkeeper Ronwen Williams so often, but the strategy worked as South Africa created some really good chances from those long, patient sequences of possession. Canada also had their big moments on set pieces and counter-attacks, and Davies’ introduction late in the second half injected more energy into the attack. But it looked as though we were headed for extra-time and possibly penalties, until Stephen Eustáquio scored the biggest goal in Canadian football history in the 92nd minute. It was an amazing ending to a very fun battle that showed why the World Cup is just the best thing there is. Canada and South Africa were not expected to deliver such drama and entertainment, but they’ve now set a high bar for the rest of the knockouts.

Barcelona were hoping Ronald Araujo would shine at World Cup 2026. Then he got injured.
(Photo by MB Media/Getty Images) | Getty Images Ronald Araujo’s injury, and Uruguay’s unexpected early elimination, mean that the defender will not play any minutes in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Surely it is an extreme disappointment for the defender, who was considered to be a cornerstone for Marcelo Bielsa’s team. But it’s also a disappointment for FC Barcelona, who were hoping that he would have improved his current standing in world football by playing a good tournament. Currently, there are two scenarios: one, where he stays with Barcelona, and another where he leaves. In scenario one, Barcelona were hoping that a good World Cup would have helped him bounce back after some disappointing seasons in which he lost his starting place. And in scenario two, it would have raised his market value after it took a tumble during those aforementioned seasons. With Pau Cubarsí emerging as Barcelona’s top center-back, and Gerard Martín gaining as the other starter, there may not be a starting position open for the Uruguayan. It’s been reported that Barcelona will respect Araujo’s decision whether he wants to stay, and potentially not be a starter, or look for a move elsewhere. But if he stays, he won’t even be necessarily guaranteed to be the third choice with Eric Garcia available and Andreas Christensen returning from injury. Now, Araujo’s challenge – if he does not leave Barça – is to return from injury, brush aside the disappointment of Uruguay’s untimely elimination, and convince Hansi Flick he should play more minutes.

‘He’s a game changer’ – Marcelo Bielsa talks trying to stop Lamine Yamal and Spain
ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JUNE 21: Lamine Yamal #19 of Spain celebrates scoring his team's first goal during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match between Spain and Saudi Arabia at Atlanta Stadium on June 21, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Patrick Smith - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images) | FIFA via Getty Images Uruguay boss Marcelo Bielsa admits his team face a tough test at World Cup 2026 later today when they come up against Lamine Yamal and Spain. La Roja are one of the favorites for victory at the tournament, with Yamal having scored his first World Cup goal on his first start last time out against Saudi Arabia. Bielsa was asked about Yamal and his plans to face Spain ahead of the game. “He’s a game-changer. There will be arguments with the player who regularly faces him over position on the field. There will be help from the Uruguayan players to overshadow him because he’s a game-changer and a decisive player,” he told reporters. “Do what we always do. Against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde we had ups and downs; what I want is for the team to be dynamic, to take the lead, and for us to be able to do so against a superior opponent to the previous two. “Spain’s style of play is based on teamwork. Creating plays is a priority in all aspects of their game, so defending will be crucial and won’t be easy. One of the best ways to defend is to limit the opponent’s possession, and we’ll try to do just that.” Uruguay’s preparations for the game have been marred by talk of unrest in the camp, with claims players are unhappy with Bielsa’s tactics and intense training sessions.

Barcelona star Pedri at risk of missing Round of 32 at World Cup 2026 due to suspension
ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JUNE 21: Pedri #20 of Spain inspects the pitch before the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match between Spain and Saudi Arabia at Atlanta Stadium on June 21, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Patrick Smith - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images) | FIFA via Getty Images Spain are currently preparing for their final group game of World Cup 2026 against Uruguay and will be hoping to top the group going into the Round of 32. The match against Uruguay promises to be a tough affair and Barcelona star Pedri will have to be very careful. Pedri has already picked up one yellow card in the tournament, against Cape Verde in Spain’s opener, and a second at this stage will bring about an automatic one-match ban. Any player receiving two yellow cards across their team’s first three matches can be suspended for the first match of the knockout round. Yellow cards will then be reset after the group stages and again after the quarter-final stage. Luis de la Fuente could decide to rest Pedri for the match, although that seems unlikely given his importance to the team. Spain are currently top of Group H and, as things stand, could face Austria in the Round of 32.

Scotland’s World Cup dream hanging by a thread after Vinícius sparks Brazil victory
Scotland will now play the waiting game. The trouble is, as they hang around to discover whether a place in the last 32 can be secured as among the leading eight third placed teams in this World Cup, it is legitimate to question the point of it all. Scotland’s on field contribution to this tournament has been pitiful. Defeat to Brazil can and should happen. The ragged nature of Scotland’s output in Miami, the utterly punchless nature of their play – again – until desperation set in means they should enter the knockout phase with red faces should that come to pass. Steve Clarke’s men have been outscored by Haiti in Group C plus New Zealand, Iran and Cape Verde elsewhere. Continue reading...

‘It’s a compliment’ – Xavi Espart happy with Philipp Lahm comparisons at Barcelona
VALENCIA, SPAIN - MAY 23: Xavi Espart of FC Barcelona looks on during the LaLiga EA Sports match between Valencia CF and FC Barcelona at Estadi de Mestalla on May 23, 2026 in Valencia, Spain. (Photo by Aitor Alcalde Colomer/Getty Images) | Getty Images Barcelona defender Xavi Espart says he was pretty flattered to be compared to Germany legend Philipp Lahm earlier in the season by manager Hansi Flick. The German coach talked up Espart back in March and then went on to hand the youngster his first-team debut in the Champions League against Newcastle. Espart has been asked about his campaign and what he thought about Flick’s words. “It was so quick that he barely had time to give me two very clear messages: to trust myself and play with confidence,” he told AS. “Obviously, I really appreciate such a comparison; he’s a fantastic footballer, it’s a compliment. “[My debut] was crazy, it all happened so fast. I was warming up and when I had to go on, I wasn’t expecting it at all, and suddenly I was on the pitch. It was just seven minutes, but I lived them at full speed. “It was a dream come true. I’ve been at Barça since I was very young, and to make my debut like that, in a crucial Champions League match, was incredible. Gordon was around there, although I didn’t have to mark him!” Espart is now with Spain’s Under-19s for the Euros where he plays a slightly different role but admits he doesn’t mind where he plays. “I enjoy both. I’ve taken on both roles,” he added. “With Spain I play as a midfielder and at Barça I play as a full-back, but since it’s such a dominant team, I feel like just another player in the middle and I’m very comfortable.” Spain kick off their campaign against Wales and then face Germany and Denmark in the group phase.

‘Absurd’ – Raphinha’s wife blasts talk of Barcelona star’s financial difficulties
PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - JUNE 19: Raphinha of Brazil disappointment during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group C match between Brazil and Haiti at Philadelphia Stadium on June 19, 2026 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Image Photo Agency/Getty Images) | Getty Images Raphinha’s wife has rejected talk that her husband is considering a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia to ease his family’s financial difficulties. Vampeta made the claim in a podcast which was swiftly rejected by Raphinha’s cousin. Natalia Rodrigues has now had her say and made it pretty clear that money is really not a problem for the family. “Honestly, I think it’s absurd that I have to talk about my financial life. If we were earning just 10% of what Raphinha earns right now, we’d already be incredibly blessed,” she todl Daily do Garotinho. “I see no need to expose this on my social media, because I’m fully aware of the social reality we live in. If I made a post saying: ‘Look, I’m not poor, I’m still rich,’ they’d call me classless. “I thought the story would die down, but these rumors have already reached Spain, and everyone thinks we’re struggling.” Raphinha, meanwhile, is currently focusing on trying to recover from injury in time to feature again for Brazil at World Cup 2026.

Barcelona sending warning to Brazil over Raphinha injury
Brazil's forward #11 Raphinha reacts after a goal disallowed for offside during the 2026 World Cup Group C football match between Brazil and Haiti at the Philadelphia Stadium in Philadelphia on June 19, 2026. (Photo by Mauro PIMENTEL / AFP via Getty Images) | AFP via Getty Images Barcelona are reportedly feeling pretty pessimistic about Raphinha’s latest injury after seeing the Brazil international sidelined at World Cup 2026. Brazil have confirmed that Raphinha is undergoing “intensive treatment” after sustaining another hamstring injury but otherwise haven’t offered much detail on his condition. According to AS, Raphinha has “a small tear in his right hamstring” and the injury is a little more serious than Brazil are letting in. Barcelona have seen Raphinha already suffer two relapses of the same injury this season and are said to be warning that the risk of another one is “extremely high if the player is rushed back.” The decision on when Raphinha will play again is down to Brazil boss Carlo Ancelotti and Barca will be hoping the Italian makes the right decision when it comes to the forward. Raphinha won’t feature in Brazil’s final group game against Scotland, but it hasn’t been ruled out yet that he could feature later in the tournament if his recovery goes well. There’s also been speculation that Raphinha is hoping he could return in time for the quarter-finals, if Brazil make it that far.
