Two decades of disappointment followed Parisian nightmare of Lehmann, Eto’o and all that, but now a first Champions League title is in sight They left London in their thousands, full of hope and devotion, heading for Paris in the springtime, yet romantic anticipation lasted all of 18 minutes, which was when Arsenal’s goalkeeper, Jens Lehmann, was sent off in the 2006 Champions League final against Barcelona at the Stade de France. Twenty years on, as Arsenal fans again travel in anticipation, this time to Budapest, for the club’s second Champions League final, you could argue that Arsenal hearts have been a little broken ever since. (Photo by Fran Santiago/Getty Images) | Getty Images Barcelona legend Xavi is being tipped to return to management in Italy with Serie A giants AC Milan. According to the Corriere dello Sport, Xavi is top of the list to replace Massimiliano Allegri and has been recommended to the club by Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The former striker works as a special advisor to the club and thinks Xavi would be a good choice. Outgoing Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola is also in the club’s thoughts as they ponder their next move. Milan are said to be looking to a future and a coach who will provide an “attacking style of play and innovative ideas” after a season where they finished down in fifth place in the table. Xavi has been out of work since leaving Barcelona but has been linked with several top jobs since then, most recently Chelsea. The Blues have since appointed Xabi Alonso as their new coach but it seems Xavi could still have a chance of returning to management imminently in Italy. Would Xavi be a good fit for Milan? ‘One of the best in the world’ – Spain boss Luis de la Fuente explains decision to call up Gavi and Eric Garcia to World Cup squad
KOBE, JAPAN - JULY 27: FC Barcelona's Eric Garcia (R) is congratulated by Gavi (C) after scoring a goal during the preseason friendly between Vissel Kobe and FC Barcelona at Noevir Stadium Kobe on July 27, 2025 in Kobe, Hyogo, Japan. (Photo by Paul Miller/Getty Images) | Getty Images Spain boss Luis de la Fuente has explained his decision to call up Gavi and Eric Garcia to his World Cup squad for this summer’s tournament. Gavi gets the nod after returning from a serious injury, while Eric has been rewarded for an outstanding season with Hansi Flick’s side. The duo are part of a squad containing eight Barcelona players, and De la Fuente spoke about why he called up the two players after announcing his list. “I don’t know if there are eight or how many from Barça. They’re national team players, I don’t care where they play. I was really upset about Gavi’s injury,” he told a press conference. “He’s the team’s plaything, and I don’t need to tell you anything about his footballing ability. He’s very versatile. He’s one of the best players in the world. “Eric was with me in the youth teams and at the Olympics. He’s joining this group and will be just another member. He hasn’t come before because the circumstances weren’t right. “I want to talk about why Eric and Pubill are coming. They’ve performed very well this season. I have to make decisions, and we felt it was the right time. That’s why we made this decision. I already said I was going to look at players who haven’t been with us.” Gavi was typically emotional at hearing news of his call-up, something De la Fuente loved to see. “I’m going to start crying too. That shows the human quality of this group. That’s just as important as the purely footballing aspects,” he added.

Real Madrid Basketball fall short in Euroleague Final against Olympiacos
Real Madrid Basketball lost Sunday’s Euroleague Final against Olympiacos 92-85. Los Blancos were severely undermanned after injuries to their three centers Edy Tavares, Alex Len and Usman Garuba, making Olympiacos the heavy favorites as Madrid were forced to play without an interior presence. The Greek team were also playing in front of around 10,000 of their fans, given that the Final Four took place in Panathinaikos’ Arena in Athens, Greece. Real Madrid competed at a very high level throughout the entire game, with notable performances from Mario Hezonja (19 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists) and Trey Lyles (24 points, 8 rebounds). However, some questionable calls by the referees in clutch time proved to be too much for Sergio Scariolo’s team to survive. Madrid guard Andrés Feliz had an opportunity to tie the game from the three-point line with 11 seconds to go but his shot hit the rim, giving Olympiacos their fourth Euroleague title. Real Madrid remain the all-time leader in Euroleague titles with 11 trophies.

Ancelotti’s World Cup gamble on Neymar shows Brazil still desperate for own Messi | Jonathan Wilson
Selecting a creaking talent underlines the political demands even the most successful coach in Champions League history cannot escape When Neymar was 18, he made his debut for Brazil as part of the rejuvenation of the national squad after the disappointment of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. At the time, Lionel Messi was 23, obviously a star, and Brazil had to have their equivalent. Neymar has been trying to escape the Argentinian’s shadow ever since. Even the news that Carlo Ancelotti has included Neymar in his squad for the forthcoming World Cup feels like a desperate attempt to create the sort of narrative Messi enjoyed at the last finals: a last dance long after the body had begun to fade. Messi then was 35; Neymar now is 34. But there are not many other similarities between the cases. Continue reading...

It was fans of all stripes. After the season Salah had enjoyed, what he did and how he carried himself, everyone knew he did not deserve this. Even when things haven’t gone well, he’s always known how to handle it. His role has been fantastic. “When we talk about philosophy, his teams always play at the highest level and he always finds a way to be better than other teams. And if you look at the titles he’s won, it’s exceptional.” Great stuff from Hansi. Pep transformed English football and regardless of how much money he had available to craft whatever team he wanted, Guardiola’s Man City was always a joy to watch and won a whole lot of trophies in the process. We likely won’t see Pep back at Barça as a coach again, but we can still enjoy him elsewhere whenever he decides to take another job.

While Friday morning is the official announcement, the makeup of the squad has become clear and features some big calls Thomas Tuchel has a way to go to emulate his Brazil counterpart, Carlo Ancelotti, in terms of sheer spectacle when it comes to the announcement of a World Cup squad. (Photo By Oscar J. Barroso/Europa Press via Getty Images) | Europa Press via Getty Images Spain boss Luis de la Fuente is preparing to announce his squad for World Cup 2026 and has dropped a few hints ahead of Monday’s big reveal. Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia is hoping to join a host of his club-mates in the squad, with De la Fuente saying he already knows which goalkeeper will be his No. 1. “Yes, yes. I’d even tell you the starting lineup. There will be three goalkeepers, not four,” he said in an interview with Mario Suarez. The Spain boss also hinted at potential surprises on Monday when the squad is announced. “The group of players is decided. It’s possible that some players who haven’t been called up before will be included,” he added. Spain will be without Fermin Lopez due to injury, but Gavi will be hoping to get the nod. De la Fuente had some kind words for the midfielder regarding how he’s performed since returning from injury. “We haven’t given him anything. He’s earned it after overcoming two very serious injuries. He’s in great form. When he’s not playing, he’s a player who is missed,” he explained. De la Fuente will call up 26 players for the World Cup, with Spain set to take on Iraq and Peru in friendlies before they kick off their tournament against Cape Verde.

‘Sometimes we get heated’ – Barcelona’s Raphinha reveals how he gets on with Real Madrid stars on Brazil duty
MADRID, SPAIN - OCTOBER 26: Vinicius Junior of Real Madrid CF argue with Raphinha of FC Barcelona during the LaLiga match between Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on October 26, 2024 in Madrid, Spain. (Photo by Diego Souto/Getty Images) | Getty Images Raphinha has revealed how he leaves his club rivalry aside when he meets up with Real Madrid stars while on international duty with Brazil. The Barcelona forward plays alongside the likes of Vinicius Jr, Eder Militao and Rodrygo for the Selecao but insists there’s no problem between the players when they are away from their clubs. “I never noticed that, at least not in the cases of Vini and me, or Rodrygo, Militão, and Endrick. When we join the national team, the club rivalry practically disappears because we know we’re here defending our country regardless of where we play. I don’t think it’s forced. It’s not a case of, ‘I have to get to the national team and I have to exclude that part.’ No. It’s something that happens naturally,” he told TNT Sports. “We arrive at the training camp and we get along well. Even in the Clásicos, we respect each other; each of us defends our team with whatever we have to offer, but when we get to the national team, the rivalry ceases to exist. “We leave the clubs aside and focus on the national team. Sometimes we get heated, yes, but that’s normal. If a Clásico didn’t get heated, it wouldn’t be a Clásico.” Raphinha has been named in the Brazil squad for this summer’s tournament. Vini Jr and Endrick are also on Carlo Ancelotti’s list along with Neymar.
