Should Barcelona be concerned about Pedri’s struggles at World Cup 2026?
Photo by Europa Press Sports/Europa Press via Getty Images Spain successfully booked a spot in the World Cup 2026 semi-finals with a thrilling win over Belgium in the quarter-finals in Los Angeles, but the performance of Barcelona midfielder Pedri was once again a cause for concern. Pedri’s inconsistent displays throughout the tournament led to his benching against Belgium, with Fabián Ruiz taking his place in the lineup and scoring the opening goal of the game. The Wizard did come on at the hour mark but was nowhere near his best, and his presence in the starting XI for Tuesday’s gigantic semi-final against France is certainly in question. Pedri’s World Cup performance comes after a subpar (by his very high standards) end to his club season, which had a couple of injury absences that caused him to lose rhythm and not be able to replicate the extraordinary form shown for the majority of the last two years for club and country. So today’s Barca Blaugranes Question of the Day is: Should Barcelona be concerned about Pedri’s struggles at the World Cup? Now it’s over to you! Feel free to share your thoughts, predictions, opinions and answers in the comments section below!

‘Tip of the iceberg’ – La Liga president Javier Tebas blasts FIFA over Folarin Balogun controversy
SAN LORENZO DE EL ESCORIAL MADR, SPAIN - JULY 02: The president of La Liga, Javier Tebas Medrano, is giving a lecture entitled ‘Diplomacy in sports relations. La Liga and the United States’ at one of the UCM Summer Courses, held at the Alfonso XII School on 2 July 2026 in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Madrid, Spain. The course ‘Geopolitical Trends (VII). The Geopolitics of Spanish-US Relations 250 Years After Spanish Aid’ offers an analysis of the geopolitics of Spanish-US relations 250 years after Spanish aid. (Photo By Eduardo Parra/Europa Press via Getty Images) | Europa Press via Getty Images La Liga president Javier Tebas has had his say on the Folarin Balogun saga that has been the talk of the football world over the last few days at World Cup 2026. Balogun was red-carded against Bosnia and Herzegovina, a decision in itself that caused controversy at the time, and was subsequently handed a one-game ban. The striker was set to miss the UMSNT’s last 16 tie against Belgium but the decision was overturned by FIFA (after a phone call from Donald Trump) which caused outrage across the world – particularly in the Belgium camp. Tebas has had his say on the matter in a lengthy post on social media and has been critical of FIFA for lifting the ban on Balogun. “The waiver of the sanction on U.S. player Balogun is neither an anecdote nor an isolated error. It is, quite simply, the tip of the iceberg of a governance model that has been eroding the credibility of FIFA and football in general for many years,” he posted. “When rules can be interpreted or modified as convenient; when the most consequential decisions are made without genuine dialogue and agreement with national/domestic leagues, which are the ones sustaining professional football 365 days a year (the vast majority of professional clubs and players do not participate in international competitions); when a unilateral agenda is imposed without listening to football’s main stakeholders, the problem stops being a specific resolution and becomes the system itself. “FIFA Congresses are: grand stagings of unanimity, no real debate, and decisions that arrive sealed before voting even begins. There are no agreements with national/domestic leagues; decisions are approved that constantly harm them. “The case of player Balogun does nothing but reinforce that perception; it is the tip of the iceberg. Moreover, if rules are applied with constant arbitrariness, trust disappears. And without trust, there is no institutional credibility. “And the worst of all is that much of the football world is aware of it, but too many prefer to maintain a complicit silence. Because staying quiet is more comfortable than defending independence, transparency, and good governance. “World football deserves institutions that are accountable, respect the rules, and govern with transparency—not through unilateral, discretionary, arbitrary decisions… that erode the trust of fans, clubs, leagues, and players.” Balogun did go on to play in the game against Belgium but the Red Devils had the last laugh, winning 4-1 and progressing to a quarter-final tie against Spain.

Who is your favorite Barcelona unsung hero of all time?
Photo by David Ramos/Getty Images I loved Seydou Keita. So much. Never has a player embodied the words “underrated” or “unsung hero” such as him. He was one of the most complete midfielders of his time, and the legendary Barcelona teams of Pep Guardiola with Sergio Busquets, Xavi and Andrés Iniesta would not have been the same if not for Keita’s quiet brilliance. And he never, ever, got the credit. Barça’s history is filled with superstars in every era, true generational talents who changed the game and became legends with their goals, trophies and unforgettable moments. But Barça fans also remember fondly those who may not be considered legends or superstars but played a crucial part in the success of the teams they were a part of. So today’s Barca Blaugranes Question of the Day is: Who is your favorite Barcelona unsung hero of all time? Now it’s over to you! Is Pau Cubarsí Barcelona’s best player at World Cup 2026 and what is the biggest reason for his success?
Photo by Rich von Biberstein/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images Spain clinched a spot in the World Cup 2026 Round of 16 with an outstanding win over Austria in Los Angeles, and Pau Cubarsí played another great game in what has been an excellent tournament for the young defender. After an inconsistent season at club level, there were reasonable doubts about Cubarsí’s ability to recover his best form for La Roja at the biggest stage, but those questions have been answered emphatically as Cubarsí is showing the very best version of his game. His outstanding passing from the back will always be the best part of his arsenal, but his ability to withstand the physical battles and make crucial interventions as a defender has been brilliant to watch. Cubarsí is showing why he’s one of the best young defenders in the sport, and his performances are a big reason why Spain have not conceded a goal at the World Cup yet. So today’s Barca Blaugranes Question of the Day is: Is Pau Cubarsí Barcelona’s best player at World Cup 2026 and what is the biggest reason for his success? Now it’s over to you! Lamine Yamal names his three favorite players of World Cup 2026 so far
ZAPOPAN, MEXICO - JUNE 26: Lamine Yamal #19 of Spain reacts during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match between Uruguay and Spain at Guadalajara Stadium on June 26, 2026 in Zapopan, Mexico. (Photo by David Ramos/Getty Images) | Getty Images Lamine Yamal has given his verdict on the players that have impressed him most at World Cup 2026 so far. The Barcelona teenager has been watching the action while with the Spain squad and has picked out a few of his favorites. “Yes, I watch it. I watch the whole World Cup. The Netherlands game was more evenly matched, but the Germany game was more of a surprise,” he told Cope. “Of the stars, I am liking Vini a lot. Obviously Messi, and Saibari I think is doing very well in the World Cup. I think he’s a player who plays very good football. Not only scoring goals, but he’s also playing well.” Messi has shone once again for Argentina at the tournament, scoring six goals in three games for the defending champions to lead the Golden Boot standings along with Kylian Mbappe. Ismael Saibari has also impressed for Morocco, scoring the winning penalty to knock out the Netherlands in the Round of 32, and has just been announced as a new Bayern Munich player.

Bernardo Silva: “I’m better suited to central positions”
PALM BEACH GARDENS, FLORIDA - JUNE 30: Bernardo Silva #10 of Portugal attends a press conference prior to the team training session during the FIFA World Cup 2026 at Gardens North County District Park on June 30, 2026 in Palm Beach Gardens, United States. (Photo by Leonardo Fernandez/Getty Images) | Getty Images Bernardo Silva has played down questions about his new club, Real Madrid, insisting his only focus is helping Portugal advance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Speaking at a press conference ahead of Portugal’s Round of 32 meeting with Croatia on Thursday, the Real Madrid midfielder refused to entertain questions about his new club, emphasizing that the national team takes priority during the tournament. “I’m not going to answer questions about Real Madrid; I’m in too important a position to focus on anything else. I’m happy, but I’m focused on the national team. The next few weeks will be dedicated exclusively to the national team.” Silva also addressed his role within the Portugal squad after playing the last couple matches of the tournament as a substitute. While acknowledging every player wants to be on the pitch, the 31-year-old stressed the importance of putting the team first. “My role as a substitute? I understand the question, but it’s not very relevant. There are many of us, we all came for the same reason. We came with the ambition to play, the coach has a difficult job. I’ve also been through this in my career, of course I want to be part of the team and I think I can help. I’m ready to help in any way I can, whether it’s playing 5 minutes or being in the locker room.” Portugal have faced criticism during parts of their World Cup campaign, but Silva said the squad remains confident despite the scrutiny. “We’re used to ups and downs; it’s a sport that involves a lot of passion, even more so with the national team. I’ve been here for many years, so I’m quite used to it. It’s about avoiding ups and downs, about being as consistent as possible. It’s about understanding what went wrong. The World Cup is a tough competition for all the teams. There are things we need to improve. Criticism is part of the process. We’re all giving our best. We’re in a good position to continue. We’re fully confident that things will turn out well.” The midfielder also dismissed any suggestion that tournament conditions should be used as an excuse, insisting both teams face the same circumstances. “I don’t think it’s tough World Cup conditions, they’re the same for both teams. We have to adapt. It’s never an excuse, the pitches have been good, we have to do our job and focus on what we can control. It’s not very relevant. We have to prepare and do our job as best as we can.” Asked about the coach’s selection decisions, Silva declined to offer an opinion, saying those choices belong solely to the manager. “It’s not my place to talk about the coach’s decisions. That’s what we have a coach for, who has a very difficult job. Everyone comes here with the intention of playing and being part of the team. He’s the one who makes the decisions. When it’s not up to us, it’s up to us to give our best, create a good atmosphere, and be ready to respond when the opportunity arises.” Finally, Silva reflected on the versatility that has defined much of his career, explaining that while he feels most comfortable in central areas, he is prepared to play wherever he is needed. “My best position? That’s a difficult question because I’ve played in many different positions. My characteristics lean more towards one particular spot. It’s hard to answer; I’m better suited to playing in certain positions. If I tell you I’m a midfielder, as I played all season at City, I’d be contradicting my career. My coach plays me out of those positions. I’m ready. Of course, I’m better suited to central positions, but I’m here to help.” Portugal take on Croatia on Thursday with a place in the Round of 16 at stake, as Roberto Martínez’s side looks to continue its World Cup campaign.

How did Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong perform at the 2026 World Cup?
GUADALUPE, MEXICO - JUNE 29: Frenkie De Jong of Netherlands reacts during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round Of 32 match between Netherlands and Morocco at Monterrey Stadium on June 29, 2026 in Guadalupe, Mexico. (Photo by Martín Fonseca/Eurasia Sport Images/Getty Images) | Getty Images The Netherlands are out of the World Cup in heartbreaking fashion after a penalty shootout against Morocco. Thus, the dream ends for FC Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, who was one of the pillars of the team. De Jong started all four matches his country played, logging 331 minutes. He had an impressive 94.2% pass success rate, second only to Micky van de Ven, who is a defender. He also led the team alongside Jan Paul van Hecke in tackles, plus had the most interceptions. Playing as the deepest midfielder in former Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman’s 3-4-3, De Jong’s responsibility was both to help in defense and start attacks. Against Morocco, the Netherlands surrendered possession and created very little as part of a conservative strategy, particularly after taking the lead 1-0, and then again after the Moroccans equalized. The Netherlands, it seems, wanted the penalty shootout, although they ended up going out in that fashion. De Jong had to be substituted for Marten de Roon at the 110 minute mark with what looked like a minor injury. His performance in that match was not the most memorable, but overall he left a good impression this World Cup, according to pundits. He was hampered, some argue, by Koeman’s conservative tactics, which did not suit a player used to playing in possession-heavy systems. De Jong earned one of the biggest trophies in his career this year, winning La Liga for the third time. Apart from winning the league, he won the Supercopa de España for the third time this year. You can add that to the two Copa del Rey triumphs from previous seasons and his collection of Dutch domestic titles with Ajax. The two biggest objectives that still elude him are to win the UEFA Champions League and to win a trophy with his national team, which has never won the World Cup. Barcelona hope his injury is indeed minor and clears up quickly, and then that he can clear his mind of the bitter disappointment of a Round of 32 exit. While there was some debate in the press about whether he is still a guaranteed starter, De Jong has a tendency to come through when there is doubt placed on his position. His World Cup performances have only strengthened his argument. So today’s Barca Blaugranes Question of the Day is: How do you rate Frenkie de Jong’s performances for the Netherlands at World Cup 2026? Share your marks out of 10! Now it’s over to you! Do you still believe in Spain as World Cup 2026 contenders after a disappointing group stage?
(Photo by CARL DE SOUZA / AFP via Getty Images Spain finished their World Cup 2026 group stage campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Uruguay in Guadalajara on Friday to eliminate the Celeste and move on to the knockout rounds as Group H winners. After a lot of pre-tournament hype putting them at the very top of the list of contenders for the title, La Roja have absolutely disappointed so far, starting with a flat performance in their goalless draw with Cape Verde in the opener and ending with a very bad showing against a very physical Uruguay team. In the middle of those two poor performances is their only strong showing of the tournament so far, with a dominant win over Saudi Arabia after a stellar first 30 minutes which were followed by a good but not great final hour with the game already over, so it’s safe to say Spain have not looked like the World Cup’s best team so far. Several of Spain’s best players have underperformed and Lamine Yamal still looks off the pace as he returns from injury, and their first opponent in the knockout rounds with likely be Austria who will provide a brutal test for a Spain side nowhere near at their best after their first three games. So today’s Barca Blaugranes Question of the Day is: Do you still believe in Spain as World Cup 2026 contenders after a disappointing group stage? Now it’s over to you! Playing at a World Cup is unforgettable but it requires every ounce of your dedication | Rodrygo
I savour the memory of playing for Brazil at the 2022 tournament – but it was a privilege that took effort For a player the World Cup day begins with everyone gathering in the restaurant for breakfast at the scheduled time. Buffet options are determined by the nutritionist, who specifies which food and in what quantities each player can consume. The morning also includes on-field training, usually within the team’s accommodation complex. After that, lunch is likewise personalised, based on each athlete’s body composition and physiological needs. The afternoon is then dedicated to gym sessions and, when necessary, recovery massages, as well as meetings for strategic guidance from the coaching staff and video analysis of the upcoming opponent. Dinner, attended by the whole squad, allows for more relaxed conversation and games such as cards, pool, or dominoes. A final snack wraps up the schedule before the night’s sleep recharges energy levels to repeat the process the next day. And the next. And the next. Continue reading...

Should Lamine Yamal start for Spain against Saudi Arabia at World Cup 2026?
Photo by Florencia Tan Jun/Getty Images Following a disappointing start to World Cup 2026 with a goalless draw against Cape Verde in their Group H opener, Spain return to action on Sunday afternoon in Atlanta for a crucial second group game against Saudi Arabia. Spain need all three points to remain in position to clinch first place in what should be a very tough group finale against Uruguay, but they also need to play much better against the Saudis after a disappointing showing in the opener. La Roja only looked anywhere near good enough when Lamine Yamal came on in the second half, and his presence was so important to the team that there’s already talk of starting the teenage superstar on Sunday, even though questions still remain about his fitness after recovering from a hamstring injury. Barcelona fans watched Raphinha suffer a relapse of his own hamstring injury in Brazil’s match on Friday, so they will undoubtedly be very nervous about the prospect of watching Yamal play extended minutes on Sunday. So today’s Barca Blaugranes Question of the Day is: Should Lamine Yamal start for Spain against Saudi Arabia? Now it’s over to you! Brazil v Haiti: World Cup 2026 – live
⚽️ Kick-off time: 8.30pm local/10.30am AEST/1.30am BST ⚽️ Player guide | Bracketology | Golden Boot | Mail Jonathan Neymar would probably not even be in North America this summer had Rodrygo been fit. Instead the Real Madrid winger is recuperating from an ACL injury by penning thoughtful columns. The pressure of wearing the Brazil shirt can be heavy but also creates a positive kind of responsibility. That pressure exists solely because of the greatness of our football, the titles we’ve won, and our historic standing in the sport. The fans’ mood often hinges on the result, which is only natural in a country so used to winning regularly. So, as a player you have to realise that a barrage of criticism isn’t the end of the world, just as a massive wave of praise doesn’t mean everything is sorted out and that you will win the tournament. It is crucial to distinguish facts and balanced analysis from comments born of raw emotion and frustration. If Vinícius is now Brazil’s undisputed star, the 25-year-old has also yet to really make the team his own. He has turned in frustrating and often fruitless performances at major international tournaments, while scoring a mere nine goals in 49 appearances entering this, his second World Cup. He has yet to wrest top billing from Neymar, whose jersey was worn by huge swaths of the Brazilian fans in their draw with Morocco on Saturday. Continue reading...

Kylian Mbappé: “I’m not here to achieve individual records”
EAST RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY - JUNE 16: Kylian Mbappe #10 of France celebrates scoring his team's second goal during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group I match between France and Senegal at New York New Jersey Stadium on June 16, 2026 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. (Photo by Shaun Botterill - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images) | FIFA via Getty Images Kylian Mbappé has once again etched his name into French football history, becoming France’s all-time leading goalscorer. But despite reaching another remarkable milestone, the Real Madrid forward insists that individual achievements have never been his primary motivation. Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Mbappé expressed pride in his latest accomplishment while emphasizing that his focus remains firmly on collective success with the national team. “It makes me extremely happy (to become France’s top all time scorer), I’m glad to have taken another step in my country’s history. It was something I was aiming for, but I want to emphasize that I’m not here to achieve individual records.” Mbappé was also asked about the criticism that inevitably follows a player of his stature. The France captain made it clear that he refuses to let outside opinions dictate his performances or mindset. “If I start playing to respond to those who criticize me, I have to play until I’m 80. I go out onto the field to make history for my country and I try to ensure that my team reaches the final and wins the World Cup. The rest will always be part of my persona and my career for as long as it lasts.” The forward also discussed his growing understanding with Michael Olise, one of France’s most creative attacking talents. Mbappé praised the winger’s vision and football intelligence, highlighting how easy it has been to develop chemistry on the pitch. “With Michael Olise, it’s super easy because he’s a player who always keeps his head up. With him, you just have to think about offering him a solution, a passing lane, and he sees it. He knew it, and it was really cool.”

‘We lacked freshness and finesse’ – Luis de la Fuente reacts to Spain’s shock draw with Cape Verde
ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JUNE 15: Head coach Luis De La Fuente of Spain looks on prior to the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match between Spain and Cabo Verde at Atlanta Stadium on June 15, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Marvin Ibo Guengoer - GES Sportfoto/Getty Images) | Getty Images Spain boss Luis de la Fuente said his team were lacking sharpness in attack after being held to a shock 0-0 draw with Cape Verde in their World Cup 2026 opener. La Roja failed to impress in a really disappointing showing. Lamine Yamal was introduced in the second half but couldn’t conjure up a goal and De la Fuente gave his verdict on his team’s display afterwards. “We lacked freshness and finesse,” he said afterwards. “We need to keep working on our approach, improving our finishing, being more clinical. These are the kinds of matches where you create a lot of chances, but we lacked the necessary sharpness. “They are a very organized team. From the first moment, we saw that they sat deep, with all 10 players practically in front of the penalty area. It’s very difficult to create space like that. At times, we lacked a bit of ball movement to unbalance the opposition. When the ball doesn’t want to go in, it doesn’t want to go in. “There were shots and chances, a desire to settle the game quickly. We have to keep going like this; we knew this was going to be very difficult, and these are games that are very hard to win.” Spain take on Saudi Arabia next in the group phase before a final match against Uruguay.

Which Barcelona player will stand out the most at World Cup 2026 and why?
Photo by Sarah Stier - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images World Cup 2026 is underway and Barcelona have a massive presence with 16 players featuring for eight different nations, and there is a very good chance that a Blaugrana star will steal the show in North America over the next five weeks. Spain have the largest contingent with eight Barça players in total, and betting on Lamine Yamal and Pedri to shine for La Roja if they make a deep run is more than safe. Raphinha has a chance to be Brazil’s spiritual and technical leader as they hope to win a first World Cup title in 24 years, and Anthony Gordon may very well prove his worth with his performances for England. Hamza Abdelkarim is hoping for a chance to make the breakthrough with Egypt as he tries to impress Hansi Flick ahead of preseason, and Frenkie de Jong will absolutely be at the heart of everything good that the Netherlands do in North America. There are several world-class superstars and young players looking to show their skills on the biggest stage, and bring joy to not only their nations but Barça fans everywhere. So today’s Barca Blaugranes Question of the Day is: Which Barcelona player will stand out the most at the World Cup and why? Now it’s over to you! Which World Cup tournament is your favorite of all time and why?
MEXICO CITY, MEXICO - JUNE 29: Diego Maradona of Argentina, hoists the FIFA World Cup trophy, celebrating as he is carried off the field by fans and teammates after the 1986 FIFA World Cup Mexico Final between Argentina and West Germany on June 29th, 1986 in Azteca Stadium, Mexico City, Mexico. Argentina defeated West Germany 3-2 to win the 1986 FIFA World Cup. (Photo by Paul Bereswill/Getty Images) | Getty Images World Cup 2026 is just a day away and excitement is building across the planet as teams go for glory in the USA, Mexico and Canada over the next few weeks. The tournament generally never fails to conjure up magic moments, produce new heroes and throw up some surprises along the way. Spain head into the tournament as one of the favorites and will be hoping to win the trophy for the second time. For Spain fans, World Cup 2010 in South Africa brings back fond memories as La Roja won their maiden title thanks to that goal from Andreas Iniesta in the final. The 1986 World Cup is remembered for many things, not least Diego Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ and his outrageous second goal against England on the way to lifting the title. There was also plenty of excitement four years later in Italy, with Roger Milla’s dancing, Toto Schillaci’s goals and Paul Gascoigne’s tears all making for a memorable tournament. The 2006 edition will be remembered for Zinedine Zidane’s headbutt on Marco Materazzi in the final, while four years earlier Ronaldo Nazario had stolen all the headlines with a rather special haircut as Brazil won their fifth World Cup. And don’t forget 2022 which brought an incredible final and saw Lionel Messi finally complete football by winning the World Cup for the first time against France. So today’s Barca Blaugranes Question of the Day is: Which World Cup tournament is your favorite of all time and why? Now it’s over to you! Who’s the current favorite for the Ballon d’Or? Will Lamine Yamal win if he inspires Spain to World Cup glory?
(Photo by David Ramos/Getty Images) | Getty Images World Cup 2026 starts on Thursday and is likely to play a part when it comes to deciding the winner of this year’s prestigious Ballon d’Or prize. Lamine Yamal finished runner-up in 2025 to Ousmane Dembele but is being tipped by many to finish top of the pile this year, particularly if he can inspire Spain to glory at World Cup 2026. Dembele has already scooped Ligue 1 and Champions League titles with PSG again this season and may also be in the running, while Harry Kane has said he thinks he deserved to be a contender. “With the season I’ve had, I think with winning the three trophies, the numbers I’ve reached, I think I’ll be in that conversation,” he told L’Equipe. “If I win the World Cup on top of that, you would imagine it would be one of the England players.” So today’s Barca Blaugranes Question of the Day is: Who’s the current favorite for the Ballon d’Or? Will Lamine Yamal win if he inspires Spain to World Cup glory? Now it’s over to you! Feel free to share your thoughts, predictions, opinions and answers in the comments section below!

Barcelona worried by Luis de la Fuente’s comments about Lamine Yamal before World Cup
A CORUNA, SPAIN - JUNE 4: Lamine Yamal of Spain during the International Friendly match between Spain v Iraq at the Riazor on June 4, 2026 in A Coruna Spain (Photo by Maria Gracia Jimenez/Soccrates/Getty Images) | Getty Images Barcelona and Luis de la Fuente haven’t enjoyed the best of relationships over the last 12 months due to differing opinions over the use of Lamine Yamal. Ahead of World Cup 2026, it seems there may still be some tension between both parties. According to Diario Sport, Barcelona are worried about the Spain coach’s recent comments about Yamal. Yamal is on his way back from a hamstring injury and Barca are eager for him to be eased back carefully. De la Fuente, meanwhile, has suggested Yamal could play from the get go. “I think they will all be available for the first game, but we will assess whether it is interesting for them to play that game, not only because of the risk aspect, but because our view goes beyond a second or third game,” he told reporters recently when talking about his injured players. Barcelona are concerned about Yamal suffering a relapse and think that Spain’s opener against Cape Verde – which comes 54 days after the teenager’s injury – would present a real risk to the teenager if he does feature. The club’s worries have been compounded by the fact that Yamal hasn’t been training at 100% just yet and was also not ready to play in either of the team’s two warm-up games. Barcelona know there is a very real risk of relapse, particularly with a hamstring injury, and that Yamal’s return must be managed carefully. The fear is that it’s a difficult situation to control, particularly at a World Cup where players are desperate to play and there’s pressure on teams to get results.

What is Beautiful Football?
PORTO, PORTUGAL - DECEMBER 7: Jose Mourinho manager of Chelsea and ex-manager of Porto during the Champions League Group H match between FC Porto and Chelsea at the Estadio Do Dragao on December 7, 2004 in Porto, Portugal. (Photo by Phil Cole/Getty Images) | Getty Images Between 2003 and 2018, in 14 completed seasons, José Mourinho finished outside the top two only twice. He won eight league titles and two Champions League titles. He won the Champions League with Porto and Inter Milan – both teams were deemed to have no right to win it. Mourinho’s career obviously took a steep dive after 2018. But even when he was successful, the verdict on him still hardened into something close to a moral charge – the antichrist – the enemy of the game. As if the winning had cost football something the rest of the sport was quietly guarding. Now he is back at Real Madrid. Which means it is only a matter of time before his methods, and Madrid’s willingness to live by them, get dragged back to the imaginary court of beautiful football for the usual sentence. So who sits on that court, and who gave them the court? Why does the taste of a Barcelona, Manchester City, or post-Klopp Liverpool admirer (fan, journalist, or author) outrank the taste of someone watching in Casablanca, Guadalajara, Buenos Aires, Montreal, or Madrid? By any honest measure, their taste does not outrank anyone’s. But the torchbearers of beautiful football got there first, planted in the press, then in your feed, and the idea seeped in anyway: that one way of playing is simply better than another. Mourinho was once asked which way he preferred to win. He said he just preferred to win. That was the whole answer. Modern football runs on exactly that. Every team plays to win, the match in front of them or the table at the end of it, and how they get there is their business. It stays their business even when they lose. Football exists to entertain the people watching it. There is no gospel that gets to tell a person what entertains them. The Getafe supporter who turns up every week to watch his team hold the ball less than anyone else in LaLiga is no less a fan than the one swooning over Lamine Yamal at Camp Nou or Vinícius Jr. at the Bernabéu. They want something different from the ninety minutes, and nobody appointed the other side to grade them on it. At the heart of this debate is this: the endorsers of winning never questioned the other side. They said, to each their own. The self-proclaimed guardians of beautiful football said, no, it is not to each their own. Only what is ours is true. What makes you content does not exist. What entertains us is the last word on our happiness and your happiness. In his new book The Greatest, Miguel Lourenço Pereira makes a simple point about Real Madrid – the obsession with winning that people call soulless was never soulless. It was survival. Madrid started as one of several clubs in the city, and the ones that didn’t win – didn’t last. Winning is the reason the club exists. A hundred years on, people hold it against the club. They question a club for being good at the exact thing it was built to do, and for doing it more than anyone else in Europe. It has parallels with Mourinho’s story. Mourinho ground through the ranks of Barcelona as the translator of Sir Bobby Robson and Louis Van Gaal. To stop being the translator forever, he had to win. And he won, a lot, before he stopped winning. Maybe he starts winning again now that he is at Real Madrid.

‘Politically delusional and legally impossible’ – Expert issues verdict on report Real Madrid want Barcelona stripped of titles and given European ban
MADRID, SPAIN - JUNE 07: Florentino Perez speaks with the media after winning the Real Madrid’s presidential election day at Eurobuilding Hotel on June 07, 2026 in Madrid, Spain. (Photo By Oscar J. Barroso/Europa Press via Getty Images) | Europa Press via Getty Images Miguel Galan – the president of the CENAFE (the National Centre of Football Managers) – has given his verdict on a report from AS that claims Real Madrid want Barcelona stripped of their titles and banned from European football over the Negreira case. The 47-year-old is well-known for taking on the RFEF and notifying the Spanish government of wrong-doing. He’s written dozens of complaints during his career, including denouncing the decision to move the Spanish Supercopa to Saudi Arabia and in response to Luis Rubiales’ forced kiss on Jenni Hermoso. Galan has now issued a lengthy response on X to the report about Madrid sending a dossier to UEFA about Barcelona. He notes how Florentino Perez “is using Article 4 of UEFA’s disciplinary/competition framework as a political and legal lever to pressure for FC Barcelona to be excluded from European competitions over the “Negreira Case.” The CENAFE president runs through the argument, stating that: “In the case of FC Barcelona, neither in criminal proceedings nor in federal or international disciplinary venues has the existence of even a single manipulated match been declared, which leaves without basis the minimum factual prerequisite to activate the ineligibility clause.” Galan continues a little more before concluding that: “Claiming that UEFA strip titles from Barça, besides being politically delusional, is legally impossible due to prescription, lack of competitive typicality, and absence of concrete fixes to support it.”

Spain at World Cup 2026: Can Spain be crowned world champions under Luis de la Fuente if Lamine Yamal has limited involvement?
Photo by Gongora/NurPhoto via Getty Images Barcelona fans worldwide are dreaming of watching the Spanish contingent in North America lif the World Cup 2026 trophy to crown Lamine Yamal, Pedri and Co. as the best national team on Earth. La Roja enter the tournament as the main favorites, but Yamal’s fitness remains a big talking point as the teenage superstar is racing against time to recover from a hamstring injury. Lamine’s status for the opener against Cape Verde is still up in the air, and we still don’t know if — and when — he’ll be back to 100%. Spain should be able to negotiate a group with Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay fairly comfortably even without Yamal, but his absence would certainly be felt in the knockout stages. ‘Ask Ronaldo, ask Messi’ – Patrice Evra tells Lamine Yamal ‘I would eat you alive’

Photo: Christian Charisius/dpa (Photo by Christian Charisius/picture alliance via Getty Images) Former Manchester United and France star Patrice Evra is known for speaking his mind and for having some controversial opinions and has come up with another interesting claim. The ex-full-back believes he would have had no problem taking on Lamine Yamal when he was at his very prime. “I’m sorry Lamine, I love you very much, but in my prime I would eat you alive. Ask Cristiano Ronaldo, ask Messi, ask other players when they faced me. I’m not a good friend,” he said, per Mundo Deportivo. Evra won plenty of titles during his career, including the Champions League, enjoying spells at Monaco, Manchester United and Juventus. However, he didn’t tend to fare well when he came up against Barcelona. He was on the losing side in Champions League finals in 2009 and 2011 with United and again in 2015 with Juve. As for Yamal, he is currently going for glory at World Cup 2026 with Spain and heads into the tournament after being named La Liga’s Player of the Season for 2025-26.

World Cup 2026 Rule Changes: Which rule are you most interested in seeing used— time wasting reductions or expanded VAR capabilities?
Photo by Tullio Puglia - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images We are days away from World Cup 2026, and the biggest tournament in the sport will introduce some big changes to the rules and to VAR’s capabilities. Several adjustments have been made to try and curb time-wasting such as strict time limits for goal-kicks, throw-ins and substitutions and the elimination of tactical timeouts for injured goalkeepers. There are also big changes to the jobs of VAR officials, who are now able to change incorrect corner-kicks before the set piece is taken, review second yellow cards and alert on-field officials about offsides in real-time with improved semi-automated offside technology. These rules will remain in place after the World Cup for every club competition, so we all must get familiarized with the new changes that will impact the way games are officiated starting next week in North America. (Photo by Koji Watanabe/Getty Images) | Getty Images Inigo Martinez says he’s confident Barcelona will win the Champions League after making it to the quarter-finals and semi-finals under Hansi Flick. The defender has also given his verdict on Barcelona’s season and has been impressed by how they managed to reel Real Madrid back in earlier in the campaign. “In a year that seemed to be going to be terrible, they have managed to turn it around. This is done by a team that is united to turn it around,” he told Sport. “The Champions League has been a shame because it has a lot of merit to take so many points from Madrid. They have won two titles this year and the Champions League has been missing, but it will come. This team is going to win it.” Martinez was also asked why it’s so hard to win the Champions League and shared his thoughts. “It is a competition that changes a lot,” he added. “Other teams enter the competition, your desire is equal and it depends on the day you have. Against Atlético de Madrid it was very complicated and it was a shame.” PSG beat Arsenal on penalties on Saturday to claim the title for a second straight season, but Barca will be hoping they can improve next season and go all the way.

Club Football vs. International Football: What aspects of international football do you enjoy more than a club season?

Michel Platini Praises Mbappé’s Evolution While Defending His Right to Speak Out
TURIN, ITALY - MAY 9: Michel Platini during the JOFC day in May 9, 2026 in Giardini Naxos, Italy. (Photo by Alberto Gandolfo - Juventus/Juventus FC via Getty Images) | Juventus FC via Getty Images French football legend Michel Platini has offered a strong defense of Kylian Mbappé, praising the Real Madrid star’s development on the pitch while also weighing in on the criticism he has faced for his political comments in recent years. In an interview with RTL France, the former UEFA president highlighted Mbappé’s growth as a footballer and argued that the scrutiny surrounding the France captain often extends beyond his performances. “I think Kylian is doing a very good job and has evolved his game. He’s gone from being a player with less accuracy in front of goal to being a goalscorer, a finisher. Furthermore, he’s been the top scorer in Spain for two years running,” Platini said. Platini believes that despite Mbappe’s personal achievements, the public often judges him more harshly for matters away from the field. “We are very demanding of him, but we are harsher on his public opinions than on his sporting performance.” The comments come amid ongoing discussion surrounding Mbappé’s willingness to speak on political and social issues. During Euro 2024, the French captain urged citizens to participate in the elections and described France as being at a pivotal moment in its history. More recently, in an interview with Vanity Fair, Mbappé reiterated concerns about the possibility of a far-right electoral victory. Platini believes footballers should have the freedom to express themselves, although he drew a distinction between representing oneself and representing the national team. “I have no problem with him expressing his political views when he’s not representing the French national team. Outside of that context, whether at Real Madrid or anywhere else, he has complete freedom of expression. However, when he wears the national team armband, his image represents all French people equally. “In any case, I think it’s great that intelligent people get involved and take a stand on social issues. In the end, it shows that footballers aren’t necessarily stupid; in fact, some are quite intelligent.”

England, France, Portugal and Brazil also come in with high hopes, and as Morocco proved in 2022 there is always a massive surprise no one will see coming in a tournament that will test players’ bodies and minds given the expected high temperatures, the big changes in timezones and the added toll of an extra knockout game in the first-ever 48-country World Cup. Apparently… We’re in? – Real Madrid Castilla make the 2025/26 third division play-offs
Real Madrid Castilla have officially qualified for the 2025/26 Primera Federación promotion play-offs. At least… they think they have. In one of the most surreal and chaotic final days Spanish football has seen in years, Castilla went from believing they had been eliminated and watching another club celebrate qualification, to eventually being informed that they themselves were actually going to the play-offs after all. Nobody appeared to understand what was happening, whether it be clubs, players, media, fans, and even the RFEF themselves… Yet through all of the chaos, Castilla were granted the lifeline of a lifetime, qualifying in extraordinary circumstances. Castilla’s season looked over. The situation entering the final day was relatively simple on paper after a few weeks of poor form: Castilla needed to better Barakaldo’s result to secure a play-off place. The team travelled to Guadalajara, a team right in the relegation battle, and drew 2-2, after being 2-0 down at one point, in a frustrating match that appeared to end their season. Throughout the afternoon they sat outside the top five in sixth place, behind Barakaldo in the live standings. When both matches reached full-time, nothing suggested otherwise, and the Castilla players were distraught. Real Madrid’s official match report even stated that Castilla had failed to qualify. Por lo tanto, sería el Real Madrid Castilla, y no el Pontevedra, el clasificado, pese a la celebración granate. pic.twitter.com/9unCcSZjyx — Jesús Domínguez (@JesuDominguez) May 23, 2026 While Castilla and Barakaldo had both finished, there was still one match continuing elsewhere involving Pontevedra, the final club capable of dramatically altering the standings. Thirteen minutes of added time was played in this game, allowing it to really sneak up one everybody. Pontevedra were 2-0 down and seemingly eliminated themselves. But in a ridiculous twist, they scored twice during that lengthy added period to rescue a draw. Pontevedra, Barakaldo and Castilla all finished level on points, initiating the start of the chaos. The immediate reaction was that Pontevedra had completed a miracle. Their official social media account celebrated qualification for the play-offs. Fans inside the stadium celebrated qualification for the play-offs. Even the official league account posted that Pontevedra had secured the final play-off position. Then the post disappeared. Almost immediately, screenshots of the RFEF rules and regulations began circulating online. Journalists and supporters scrambled to interpret a set of rules that suddenly became the most important document in the world. The wording was not simple. 🔚 FINAL EN PASARÓN 🏟️♥️ SOOOOMOS DE PLAY OFF Pontevedra CF 2-2 Real Avilés Encontro patrocinado por Exalta e Acuña #PontevedraCFRealAvilesInd #PrimeraFederacion | #VersusELearning pic.twitter.com/InlTuUVigT — Pontevedra CF 🦴 (@PontevedraCFSAD) May 23, 2026 The confusion centred around the RFEF’s rules regarding ties involving more than two teams. Rather than using the normal league table, the regulations require the creation of a separate “mini-league” consisting only of the matches played between these tied teams. It states: “A separate classification shall be established between the tied teams, counting only the matches played between them”. Only if teams remain tied after this recalculation does any further criteria apply. Many initially interpreted the standings incorrectly by relying on either the normal table or simplified head-to-head calculations. But once the specific three-team mini-league between Castilla, Barakaldo and Pontevedra was isolated, the standings shifted again. And somehow, Castilla emerged on top. As confusion spread across social media and Spanish media outlets, the situation reportedly reached the point where a single RFEF official was tasked with confirming the final interpretation of the regulations and therefore the final standings. That ruling eventually declared Real Madrid Castilla as the team qualifying for the promotion play-offs. This was absurd. Castilla had already mourned elimination, whilst Pontevedra had already celebrated qualification (and even Barakaldo). The league itself had already publicly stated a different outcome. Yet with this verdict, and bad taste was left in everyone’s mouths. Football rarely produces anything quite like this, as Castilla qualified for the play-offs without actually experiencing the moment of qualification. It seemed, they could have finished as low as 7th, and they ended up being placed in fifth. Apparently, they’re in? 🚨 ¡𝗢𝗙𝗜𝗖𝗜𝗔𝗟! May 23, 2026 Castilla already know their opponents in the play-offs: CE Sabadell. This is a team who enjoyed a fair better season than Castilla in Group B, finishing in second place with 68 points (Castilla finished with 58, in fifth). Still, tonight has proven that in this division, anything is possible…

‘He made a mistake’ – Gavi gives his verdict on Fede Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni’s bust-up at Real Madrid
BARCELONA, SPAIN - MAY 10: Gavi of FC Barcelona in action with Aurelien Tchouameni of Real Madrid CF during the LaLiga EA Sports match between FC Barcelona v Real Madrid at the Camp Nou on May 10, 2026 in Barcelona Spain (Photo by Adria Puig/Anadolu via Getty Images) | Anadolu via Getty Images Gavi has been asked to share his thoughts on the recent bust-up at Real Madrid that featured Fede Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni reportedly coming to blows on the training ground. The incident happened before El Clasico and saw both players fined by the club. Valverde also had to miss the game due to a head injury, while manager Alvaro Arbeloa did call up Tchouameni for the match. Gavi, who is known for having a short fuse, says that clashes on the training ground aren’t unusual but feels Arbeloa erred by calling up Tchouameni for the match. “I’m one of those who thinks there are always going to be some clashes with your teammates during training at some point during the season, because that’s just how it is, it’s competitiveness, and that’s always good up to a point, obviously,” he told Mundo Deportivo. “But if it comes to blows, then the manager shouldn’t have played him. If it’s true that they came to blows, then in my opinion, he made a mistake calling him up (Tchouaméni) and playing him. But I don’t really know what happened.” The game ended in a 2-0 win for Barcelona that saw the Catalans secure another La Liga title and leave Madrid trophyless once again.
