‘The perfect moment’ – Tearful Alexia Putellas opens up on decision to leave Barcelona
BARCELONA, SPAIN - MAY 27: Alexia Putellas of FC Barcelona lifts the UEFA Womens Champions League Trophy during the press conference at Spotify Camp Nou on May 27, 2026 in Barcelona, Spain. Two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas has announced she will leave Barcelona after 14 years. (Photo by Eric Alonso/Getty Images) | Getty Images Alexia Putellas said her goodbyes to Barcelona on Wednesday in a special event organised by the club to pay tribute to a true club legend. The 32-year-old spoke about her decision to say goodbye to the club and made it clear how difficult it will be for her to walk away from the Catalan giants. Yet Alexia also admitted that it’s the perfect time to go after a season where the club have won an historic quadruple. “Yesterday was a very emotional day, actually, I’d say the whole season has been, when I considered whether it would be my last,” he sad. “Yesterday I felt a huge emptiness and today I’m filled with love. There’s no single moment when you feel it’s time to leave. There are many shades of gray; it’s the most important decision of my life. What I felt was that continuing could obscure this path. When I lifted the fourth Champions League trophy, I saw that it was the perfect moment to say goodbye. “I made a promise that today I would lay myself bare. This is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I felt I could contribute, but you can’t normalize all of this. I told my grandmother that it’s not normal to live with this level of pressure for 14 years, that we are privileged. “If I had to imagine a perfect ending, this would be it. I’ve given it my all. After the fourth Champions League title … I felt it was the perfect moment. “I couldn’t see myself doing anything other than giving 100%. The team will continue. I know them and I know they will keep winning,” she said, explaining the reasons for the change in her career path. Alexia has yet to announce her next move but readily admitted that no matter where she goes, she will always be a culer: “My story will always be with Barça. It has been a privilege.”

‘Lamine Yamal is a player people pay to watch’ – Vinicius Jr piles praise on Barcelona star
MADRID, SPAIN - OCTOBER 26: (L-R) Lamine Yamal of FC Barcelona, Vinicius Junior of Real Madrid during the LaLiga EA Sports match between Real Madrid v FC Barcelona at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on October 26, 2025 in Madrid Spain (Photo by Maria Gracia Jimenez/Soccrates/Getty Images) | Getty Images Vinicius Jr has showered Barcelona star Lamine Yamal with praise and says he’s the type of player that people are happy to pay to watch. Yamal has thrilled the football world since bursting onto the scene as a 15-year-old. The forward has already won La Liga and Copa del Rey titles with Barca as well as the European Championship with Spain. Barca’s No. 10 is now heading to the World Cup with La Roja, with Vinicius’s praise ringing in his ears. “Lamine is one of those players people pay to see play. He’s a great player and very difficult to play against. I’m sure he admires the Real Madrid players too,” he told Caze TV. Vini also spoke about another trophyless season for Madrid after seeing Barca finish top of the pile again in La Liga. “It’s been a very difficult season. We started well, with a gap between us and Barça, but then we started losing and drawing games we shouldn’t have,” he added. We lost confidence and Barça kept winning. It’s the first time I’ve gone two seasons without a win; we failed. We have a team that can win next year. Real Madrid always comes back. My first year was also very difficult, when Cristiano left.” Hansi Flick will be aiming to make it three titles in a row next season, while Madrid are expected to turn to Jose Mourino once again as manager.

Barcelona confirm Alexia Putellas departure at the end of the season
Photo by Judit Cartiel - UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images Barcelona confirmed on Tuesday that club captain and women’s football icon Alexia Putellas will leave the club at the end of the season after 14 years in the Catalan capital. Un llegat. Una icona. Una capitana. Eterna Alexia. 💙❤️ pic.twitter.com/h2335k2gns — FC Barcelona Femení (@FCBfemeni) May 26, 2026 There had been much speculation about Alexia’s future in recent weeks and her departure is now confirmed, with the captain set to say an official goodbye in a ceremony at the club on Wednesday. Alexia leaves as the club’s record scorer with 232 goals in over 500 appearances and with a staggering 38 trophies won including 4 Champions Leagues and 10 league titles. She’s also a two-time Ballon d’Or winner and World Cup and twice Nations League champion with Spain, and is undoubtedly the greatest female player of all-time. Alexia’s legacy goes beyond her goals, assists and trophies: she put Barça Femení on the map, and the Blaugrana’s dominance this decade with Alexia as the team’s leader and captain has helped grow the success and popularity of women’s football. There will never be another Alexia Putellas. Farewell, Queen.

An absolute bargain? Barcelona target Jan Virgili’s release clause drops after Mallorca’s relegation
GETAFE, SPAIN - MAY 13: Jan Virgili of RCD Mallorca gestures during the LaLiga EA Sports match between Getafe CF and RCD Mallorca at Coliseum Alfonso Perez on May 13, 2026 in Getafe, Spain. (Photo by Angel Martinez/Getty Images) | Getty Images Jan Virigili has been linked with a return to Barcelona throughout this season as the Catalans search for a new left winger for next season. The former Barcelona player made 31 appearances for Mallorca this season in La Liga, scoring twice and grabbing four assists. However, his future in once again in the spotlight after Mallorca’s relegation. According to Diario Sport, the team’s drop down the divisions means his release clause has reduced from €30m to just €12 million. If you add in the fact that Barcelona also have 40% of a future sale and the right of first refusal, it means that Virgili could potentially be snapped up for just €7m. The change in circumstances may well prove tempting for Barca as they seek to strengthen their squad. The Catalans are reportedly ready to spend big on a striker but are also thought to want a winger and a defender in time for the new campaign.

On This Day in 2018: Farewell Cristiano
KIEV, UKRAINE - MAY 26: Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid leaves the pitch following the UEFA Champions League Final between Real Madrid and Liverpool at NSC Olimpiyskiy Stadium on May 26, 2018 in Kiev, Ukraine. (Photo by Lukas Schulze - UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images) | UEFA via Getty Images Real Madrid did the unthinkable, the unfathomable, the wildest among the wildest things to imagine when it comes to club football. It didn’t even feel real; it felt like a fallacy – three Champions League titles in a row. But in Kyiv, it was Real Madrid’s reality. Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid did it against Liverpool, with a 3-1 win. Gareth Bale scored two outstanding goals, coming off the bench after Karim Benzema had opened the scoring for Madrid. Sadio Mane’s equaliser had briefly brought Liverpool back in the game, but Gareth Bale stormed in and blew it away from their reach. During the celebrations, Marco Asencio and Isco were joking that it doesn’t feel as good as it should anymore – of course, because they had won it so many times by that time (Isco four, Asencio two). In that moment, only Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo himself knew that the club’s greatest ever marksman had already played the last game for Los Blancos. Cristiano took part in the celebrations at Cibeles the next morning and even promised to meet the fans there next year, but he was already gone. The closest pop culture reference is probably Michael Scott leaving The Office (US) a day early, pretending it’s business as usual. Only Jim Halpert knew what was really going on.

Enrique Riquelme Calls For Florentino Pérez Debate As Presidential Campaign Intensifies
MADRID, SPAIN - MAY 25: Enrique Riquelme attends the Media during the opening of his new campaign headquarters for his candidacy for the presidency of Real Madrid next to Bernabeu stadium on May 25, 2026, in Madrid, Spain. (Photo By Oscar J. Barroso/Europa Press via Getty Images) | Europa Press via Getty Images Enrique Riquelme continued to ramp up his presidential campaign by directly engaging with Real Madrid socios and supporters while publicly calling on Florentino Pérez to participate in a debate ahead of the upcoming elections. With the club’s Electoral Board still yet to officially confirm the election date — currently expected to be June 7th — Riquelme’s campaign is already operating at full speed. The businessman spent the morning meeting with supporters at El Rincón de Toñín, a traditional gathering place tied to the Capote y Montera supporters’ club, where he listened to concerns from fans and discussed several of the themes shaping his campaign. Among the key issues raised were the Santiago Bernabéu renovation project, the treatment of socios and season ticket holders, ticket accessibility, and what Riquelme views as a growing disconnect between the club and its membership base. Riquelme argued that ordinary socios have increasingly been pushed aside despite the club’s commercial success. “Season ticket holders are privileged, but regular members feel forgotten,” he reportedly explained during the meeting. He specifically questioned the difficulty members face when trying to purchase tickets through the club’s official system, suggesting the process lacks transparency and accessibility. Another recurring topic was the issue of season ticket redistribution. Riquelme criticized the lack of clarity surrounding season tickets that become available after holders are reportedly removed for resale violations, questioning why those spots are not being opened to waiting socios. Much of the attention, however, centered on his demand for a public debate with Florentino Pérez. The current Real Madrid president recently challenged potential opponents to step forward publicly and explain what they had contributed to the club. Riquelme responded directly, insisting that after two decades without a contested election, a debate is necessary. “There has to be a debate,” Riquelme said. “Florentino has been the best president in Real Madrid history, and what we want is to continue building on the legacy he has created while taking the club into the future.” He also claimed Pérez never truly expected a challenger to emerge, pointing to how quickly his own campaign was assembled once elections were announced. Throughout the event, Riquelme leaned heavily into a message centered around listening to socios and restoring stronger communication between the club hierarchy and its membership. Before leaving, he posed for photos with fans and accepted a document containing requests and concerns from a group of members, promising to review the proposals and incorporate them into upcoming campaign announcements.

Florentino Pérez Launches Re-Election Campaign Ahead Of Real Madrid Presidential Vote
MADRID, SPAIN - MAY 23: Florentino Perez, President of Real Madrid, during the Spanish League, LaLiga EA Sports, football match played between Real Madrid and Athletic Club at Bernabeu stadium on May 23, 2026, in Madrid, Spain. (Photo By Oscar J. Barroso/Europa Press via Getty Images) | Europa Press via Getty Images Florentino Pérez will officially kick off his campaign for the Real Madrid presidency on Wednesday evening, as the club’s election process begins to take shape ahead of next month’s vote. The current president is set to present his candidacy at 7:00 PM local time at the Meliá Castilla Hotel in Madrid, where he will unveil the slogan for his campaign: “Much history to be made.” The message is aimed at reinforcing Pérez’s vision for the future while reminding socios of the unprecedented success Real Madrid have enjoyed under his leadership. In the lead-up to the announcement, Pérez’s campaign team has already begun promoting his candidacy around the Santiago Bernabéu. A large banner displayed near the stadium highlights the seven Champions League trophies won during his two spells as president — a reminder of the club’s dominance in Europe throughout the modern era. Real Madrid are expected to officially confirm the date of the presidential election later today. Barring any last-minute changes, the vote is currently scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 7th. Pérez will face businessman Enrique Riquelme in the election, with the winner set to lead the club for the next four years. Florentino Perez has served as president across two different eras, first from 2000 to 2006 and again since returning in 2009. During that time, Real Madrid have transformed both financially and competitively, winning multiple Champions League titles while also overseeing the extensive renovation of the Santiago Bernabéu.

Joan Garcia has been worth every single penny for Barcelona and deserves his World Cup call-up
Let’s not beat about the bush. Joan Garcia is right up there with Barcelona’s players of the season. Moving from arch-rivals Espanyol isn’t for the faint of heart, and the cacophony of boos and abuse that he received on his return to the RCDE Stadium showed the depth of feeling towards him amongst the Periquitos. At only 25 years of age, he is already the consummate Barca custodian. Commanding in his box, brave and decisive when he needs to be – even if it means taking out his own players in the process – astonishingly good with his feet, and brilliant in one-on-one situations. Think about it… How often during the 2025/26 campaign did you say to yourself when the opposition was bearing down on his goal, ‘I’m not worried, Joan will save it,‘ or something to that effect? 𝐉𝐨𝐚𝐧 𝐆𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐚 🔒 pic.twitter.com/6hyGtMAKbU — FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona_cat) January 25, 2026 If the supporters think that, and I believe that most genuinely do, then think how confident his back four are in him. That’s a priceless commodity to have as a goalkeeper. Marc-Andre ter Stegen lost that edge for whatever reason, and whilst he will almost certainly have been bruised by his treatment at the club, he can’t have any complaints as to the reasoning. Given just how well Joan Garcia has done throughout his debut campaign with the Blaugranes, it’s astonishing that he isn’t the Spanish No.1, too. An incredible 147 saves made with a 72.9% success rate is truly elite level, not to mention the 72 times that he acted as a sweeper keeper with a perfect 100% success rate, or the winning back of possession on 110 separate occasions. Then there are the punches, clearances and headed clearances to factor in, as well as the astonishing 88.04% pass completion thanks to 1,126 of 1,279 total passes finding their target. For passes made in his own half, Garcia’s numbers go up to an almost perfect 95.9%, whilst only a handful of players have made more than his 1,533 possessional passes during the 25/26 campaign. At this point in time there’s arguably little weakness to his game, and to come in and hit the ground running in the way that he has shows great confidence in his own ability. The Zamora Trophy was well deserved. Having the mental strength to walk into a club as big as Barcelona and essentially puff out his chest and not be cowed by the responsibility of wearing the shirt, or the demands of his position more generally, takes bravery and guts. What a bargain!

(Photo by Jose Breton/Pics Action/NurPhoto via Getty Images) | NurPhoto via Getty Images Hansi Flick wants to make a key change to his coaching set-up in the summer at Barcelona and has asked the club to appoint a new fitness coach. The German coach is to lose Thiago Alcântara and fellow coach Stephan Nopp this summer. Flick has asked Barca for reinforcements, specifically a fitness coach, but is still waiting for his request to be approved, per AS. The head of the team’s fitness staff Julio Tous is set to stay on but may see his role affected. Flick wants to make the change after seeing his team beset by injuries in the 2025-26 season. The report says the “evident lack of physical conditioning” is believed to be one reason for the club’s fitness problems. Flick is eager to do all he can to win the Champions League next season and “wants to implement a substantial change in physical preparation” in a bid to land the European Cup. It’s been reported throughout the season that some Barcelona players have complained about the physical preparation and fitness work at the club and have been using their own physios.

Enrique Riquelme officially launches Real Madrid presidential campaign with criticism of Bernabéu renovation and call for debate
Barroso/Europa Press via Getty Images) | Europa Press via Getty Images Enrique Riquelme has officially begun his campaign for the Real Madrid presidency — and he wasted little time making his intentions clear. Speaking at the opening of his campaign headquarters directly across from the Santiago Bernabéu, Riquelme presented himself as a candidate focused on both “legacy and future,” while also delivering pointed criticism toward the current direction of the club under Florentino Pérez. Although he repeatedly emphasized that his campaign is “not against anyone, but in favor of Real Madrid,” several of his comments carried unmistakable jabs at the current administration. One of his first criticisms centered around the way Real Madrid’s history is represented publicly. Referring to banners displayed around the Bernabéu celebrating the club’s European Cups, Riquelme suggested that part of Madrid’s legacy has been overlooked. “We respect the legacy,” he said, “but not only the seven European Cups shown on some banners. There are eight more, and they are also part of Real Madrid’s history.” Riquelme also targeted the renovated Santiago Bernabéu, questioning whether the fan experience justifies the enormous financial investment made into the stadium transformation. “After a €1.7 billion renovation, the seats are smaller and closer together,” he argued. “You have to leave your seat 10 minutes before halftime just to get a drink or a sandwich. Is this really what the renovation was supposed to be?” Throughout his speech, Riquelme repeatedly returned to one central theme: the role of club members, or socios. He argued that ordinary members have gradually become disconnected from the institution despite being the foundation of the club’s identity. “What are the benefits of being a Real Madrid member?” he asked rhetorically. “Beyond the honor of it and a discount on shirts, what do members really receive?” He promised that the cornerstone of his campaign would be a major proposal aimed specifically at improving the experience and influence of socios. According to Riquelme, the project will be unveiled later this week and will represent the largest membership-focused initiative in club history. “This Wednesday we will present the biggest transformational project for Real Madrid members in the club’s 120-year history,” he declared. While many details of his broader sporting vision remain undisclosed, Riquelme insisted that he would not have entered the race without a strong footballing project behind him. “We said during the pre-campaign that we would only run if we had a powerful and exciting sporting project for Real Madrid fans,” he said. “And we do.” Another major talking point from his appearance was his public request for a direct debate with Florentino Pérez. Riquelme argued that Real Madrid needs genuine democratic discussion between competing visions for the club — something he believes has been absent for over two decades. “It has been more than 20 years since Real Madrid had this kind of debate,” he said. “All the requirements have been fulfilled on our side. Now what we ask for is discussion. Debate. As many times as necessary, respectfully and constructively.” Riquelme also referenced Spain’s national team while discussing the current sporting state of the club, noting that Real Madrid’s representation in La Roja has diminished dramatically. “At most, if we are lucky, one Real Madrid player will be called up,” he said. “Meanwhile, our rivals will fill much of the squad.” The comments appeared to tie into his broader message that Madrid must once again become the dominant force not only at club level, but also within Spanish football’s national identity. The campaign launch marks the official beginning of what could become the most public and contested Real Madrid presidential race in years. Whether Riquelme can seriously threaten Florentino Pérez remains to be seen, but his opening day made one thing clear: he intends to challenge the current leadership openly, directly, and publicly.

Jorge Valdano: “Mbappe is not a fraud”
MADRID, SPAIN - MAY 21: The journalist and former footballer Jorge Valdano, during the presentation of the book "366 footballers of all time who have made history", at the Ateneo de Madrid, on 21 May, 2026 in Madrid, Spain. Relaño brings together journalist Iñaki Gabilondo and former coach Jorge Valdano in the literary meeting to unravel the careers, milestones and anecdotes of the players who have transformed the beautiful game worldwide. (Photo By Isa Saiz/Europa Press via Getty Images) | Europa Press via Getty Images Former Real Madrid player and executive Jorge Valdano has come to the defense of Kylian Mbappe, pushing back strongly against the criticism surrounding the French superstar following Madrid’s disappointing campaign. Speaking in an interview with Movistar, Valdano argued that the scrutiny directed at Mbappe has become excessive and ignores both his individual quality and production. “Kylian Mbappe has won a World Cup and was runner-up in another, scoring three goals in the final,” Valdano said. “We are not talking about a fraud, we are talking about perhaps the best player in the world right now.” Mbappe’s second season at Real Madrid has unfolded under immense pressure and expectation. Despite finishing as the team’s top scorer, much of the post-season discourse has centered around Madrid’s collective struggles and Paris Saint-Germain’s resurgence after his departure. Valdano believes the narrative has unfairly turned Mbappe into the symbol of everything that went wrong at the Santiago Bernabéu while simultaneously crediting PSG’s success to his exit. “To place the blame for everything good that happens to Paris Saint-Germain and everything bad that happens to Real Madrid on this man, who is the league’s top scorer, seems like an abuse to me,” Valdano added. Valdano’s defense also comes at a time when comparisons between Real Madrid and PSG have intensified. PSG’s post-Mbappe evolution into a more balanced collective under Luis Enrique has led many to frame Madrid’s season as evidence that the Frenchman’s arrival disrupted the team’s chemistry. Valdano clearly rejects that interpretation.

Hard work and perseverance pay off for Gavi and Eric Garcia as Barcelona stars earn deserved World Cup 2026 spots
BARCELONA, SPAIN - MAY 10: Gavi of FC Barcelona celebrates after defeating Real Madrid CF, and winning the LaLiga title, after the LaLiga EA Sports match between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid CF at Spotify Camp Nou on May 10, 2026 in Barcelona, Spain. (Photo by Alex Caparros/Getty Images) | Getty Images Monday saw Luis de la Fuente announce his Spain squad for the forthcoming World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. After a successful season for Barcelona, the players will have expected to at least be in the mix to be on the plane, though such decisions are always fraught for an international manager, and there will always be those that are disappointed. With eight players in the squad, Barca have the most from one club, evoking memories of the golden era of Spanish football between 2008 and 2012. Two of the Blaugranes chosen to represent La Roja can’t have deserved it more, either. After the immense disappointment of missing out on the 2024 European Championship and Olympic Games squads because of injury, and notwithstanding another serious problem that kept him out for months recently, Gavi has been reborn in the latter half of the current season. Back to his old devilish self, it’s been a joy for supporters to see him mixing it with the best that Spanish and European football have to offer, and, as importantly, to be doing so at a similar level to that which he displayed pre his ACL. Eric Garcia’s inclusion is a testament to the hard work that he’s put in, and it isn’t a stretch to say that he’s been arguably Barca’s most reliable player this season. Had he not been selected on this occasion, it would’ve been a travesty, and questions would’ve again been asked of De la Fuente, who doesn’t enjoy unanimous support in the corridors of power at Camp Nou. One player who must be ruing his luck is Fermin Lopez. The 23-year-old enjoyed another excellent campaign for the Blaugranes, scoring 13 goals and providing 17 assists in 48 matches in all competitions during 2025/26. Though Fermin would certainly have had reasonable competition in the midfield area to earn a selection, and surely wouldn’t begrudge Pedri and Gavi being on the plane in any event, breaking a bone in his foot against Real Betis ensured he’d play no part in the tournament. Only De la Fuente will know why Unai Simon retains the goalkeeper’s jersey when it’s clear that both David Raya and, particularly, Barca’s Joan Garcia have been head and shoulders above him in the current campaign. For his shot-stopping, reflexes, bravery and ability with both feet, there’s simply no cogent reason why Garcia isn’t the new No.1 already. Pau Cubarsi has deservedly booked his spot, and given an almighty amount of experience at the top level already, it’s often forgotten that he’s still just 19 years of age. A solid addition, and a player who will only improve. Lamine Yamal was always going to make the cut unless he was injured, and if Spain go deep into the tournament, expect some magic from the twinkle-toed teenager. Joining Lamine as part of the Spanish attacking eight to travel to the showpiece are Ferran Torres and Dani Olmo. Both have had their moments in 25/26, though one might also contend that they’ve also not been at their best for long periods. If nothing else, their selection could bring them some individual confidence, and away from the daily rigours of club football, La Roja might just be able to bring the best out of them. Ultimately, eight players from the same club is a ringing endorsement that Barca are again doing things right, and that can only be great for club and country in the longer term. In contrast, Real Madrid have no representatives in this squad for some sort of context.

‘We’ll take risks if necessary’ – Spain boss offers Lamine Yamal update after Barcelona star named in World Cup 2026 squad

(Photo by Gongora/NurPhoto via Getty Images) | NurPhoto via Getty Images Spain boss Luis de la Fuente has offered an update on Lamine Yamal after naming the Barcelona teenager in his squad for World Cup 2026. Yamal is currently out with a hamstring injury but is expected to be fit in time for the start of the tournament, although there has been talk he may not play in Spain’s opening game as a precautionary measure. De la Fuente was asked for an update after his naming the squad and provided the following answer. “We won’t rush any process. The dates and the report we have indicate that everyone will be available for either the first or second match,” he told reporters. “We won’t take any risks, but if players want to take risks, it’s at a World Cup. We’ll take some risks if necessary. We have to win every match. If they don’t play, it’s because I don’t think they should play.” Barcelona will certainly be hoping that no risks are taken with Yamal in case he does suffer a relapse of his hamstring injury.

The call-up marks a great end to the season for Gavi who missed a large chunk of the campaign due to a serious knee injury that required surgery. It’s been a long way back to full fitness for the combative midfielder but he’s impressed since returning to the Barca team and has now been handed a dream World Cup call-up. Nico Paz Named Best Midfielder of Serie A in 2025-26

(Photo by Piero CRUCIATTI / AFP via Getty Images) | AFP via Getty Images Castilla graduate Nico Paz was named the best midfielder in Serie A for the 205-26 season. The 21-year-old Argentine midfielder helped Como qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history. Como 1907 midfielder Nico Paz has been named the Serie A Enilive 2025/26 MVP – Best Midfielder. The award was presented during the pre-match ceremony ahead of Cremonese-Como 1907. Congratulations, Nico! pic.twitter.com/A69fjhN1if — Como1907 (@Como_1907) May 24, 2026 He scored 13 goals and provided eight assists in Serie A and the Italian Cup under Cesc Fabregas. Paz had a meteoric rise this season and could return home to Madrid in 2026-27. An additional year in Italy is not ruled out either, but his buy-back clause has a deadline tied to it – and Real Madrid would rather capitalise on it now. Incoming manager Jose Mourinho will surely have a say on Nico’s future. He did not play in Como’s final game of the season against Cremonese due to caution from an injury. Nico Paz is certain to have a place in Argentina’s 26-man World Cup squad after a stellar season. With consultation with Argentina’s doctors, it was decided that he shouldn’t play on Matchday 38. Lionel Scaloni is reported to announce the squad sometime this week.

Real Madrid Juvenil A thrash Barcelona to win the Champions Cup
Real Madrid’s Juvenil A team came back from a goal down to defeat rivals Barcelona 4-1 in the Champions Cup, held at the Municipal El Val on Sunday. Goals from Carlos Diez, Alexis Ciria, Yeremiah and Gabri Valero in the second half overturned the 1-0 deficit from the first half, as the youngsters from the Cantera went on to pick up the ninth Champions Cup in the category’s history. In a game that was fairly even at the break, Real Madrid were able to impose themselves onto Barcelona a bit more in the second half, especially after Barcelona’s Ïu Martinez received a second yellow for a wild challenge on Lacosta. Valero was impressive throughout the match, as he not only picked up the goal, but was also involved in the equaliser and had a generally good game. The Juvenil A became the first team in Spanish football history to win the Champions Cup, the league and the UEFA Youth League in the same season with the huge victory.

‘His attitude and mentality are incredible’ – Hansi Flick hails Gerard Martin but still wants more from Barcelona defender
BARCELONA, SPAIN - MAY 10: Hansi Flick, head coach of FC Barcelona is embrace by Gerard Martin of FC Barcelona after defeating Real Madrid, and winning the LaLiga title, after the LaLiga EA Sports match between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid CF at Spotify Camp Nou on May 10, 2026 in Barcelona, Spain. (Photo by Eric Alonso/Getty Images) | Getty Images Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has been full of praise for Gerard Martin but still wants more from the defender next season. Martin has switched from left-back to center-back this season and has impressed in the heart of the Barcelona backline. Flick says his rise through the ranks at Barcelona deserves huge credit but feels the 24-year-old can get even better. “He has everything he needs to play in this position. His attitude and mentality are incredible. He has improved a lot. When you look at the numbers, it’s impressive. I’m happy for him, for us, and for the club,” he told reporters after Barca’s final game of the season. “For a player to come in from Barça Atlètic and perform like this in his second season is incredible, it’s great to see. It’s what I want from him. His mentality and attitude are exactly what Barça needs. “Next season he has to take a step forward. We’re working on it. He’s ready to do it. He’s 100% committed to this.” Barcelona had been tipped to spend big on a center-back this summer but that talk has cooled recently which could be good news for Martin. The club’s priority currently is to bring in replacement for Robert Lewandowski.

Relegation the inevitable outcome of West Ham’s relentless executive failure | Barney Ronay
Once-proud club has forgotten what it was trying to be after years of mismanagement in a shopping centre annexe If you’re going to die, die with your boots on. Belatedly and pointlessly on. But on all the same. It felt deeply fitting that West Ham should show some fight on the final day of the Premier League season, but that relegation should still be confirmed by events elsewhere, any pleasure at a 3-0 defeat of Leeds rendered irrelevant by Tottenham’s win at home against Everton, as West Ham’s season flopped like an ailing dog in the mid-summer heat. There was at least some joy at the London Stadium, a reminder that joy is both the only thing that actually matters here, and also the precise polar opposite of the football-club-shaped blob that West Ham’s ownership has created. When Jarrod Bowen scored West Ham’s second goal on 78 minutes, charging past a Leeds defence already ranged about the place on sun loungers flicking through the latest Sally Rooney, there was a brief glimpse of some other West Ham, some other reality, a lost place of greater care and competence, other hands on the wheel. Barcelona sent strong message after ‘exploratory’ talks with Chelsea for Joao Pedro

(Photo by Marc Atkins/Getty Images) | Getty Images Barcelona have reportedly held “exploratory talks” with Chelsea over a potential summer move for Joao Pedro but have been told there is “no price” that will convince the Blues to part ways with the Brazilian. Reporter Ben Jacobs says that Barcelona’s interest is “genuine” but has played down talk of a possible move to Barcelona. He posted on X: “Although Barcelona’s interest in Joao Pedro is genuine, and some exploratory talks have taken place, Chelsea are not prepared to sell. There is no price that will change the club’s stance this summer, even a world-record bid.” Although Barcelona’s interest in Joao Pedro is genuine, and some exploratory talks have taken place, Chelsea are not prepared to sell. The Legacy Dani Carvajal Leaves Behind
MADRID, SPAIN - MAY 23: Supporters of Real Madrid with a huge banner of Daniel Carvajal of Real Madrid prior to the match during the LaLiga EA Sports match between Real Madrid v Athletic de Bilbao at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on May 23, 2026 in Madrid Spain (Photo by M Gracia Jimenez/Soccrates/Getty Images) | Getty Images Real Madrid City in Valdebebas is a serious place. It’s picturesque — every blade of grass on every single training pitch is at the perfect length. Despite the seriousness, there is a sense of serenity within Real Madrid’s training facilities. Youth team players from the men’s and women’s divisions work diligently, with a sense of pride and responsibility, to one day become Dani Carvajal. Six-time UEFA Champions League winner and La Fábrica graduate Dani Carvajal bid farewell to the Bernabéu after a storied career at the club that spanned over 23 years. There is nothing that happened in Valdebebas that hasn’t coincided with his time at the club, except a brief spell away at Bayer Leverkusen. Carvajal started in all six Champions League finals he won. He played in one position for 13 years as a first-team player — a position that lacked consistency at Real Madrid for years before it was time for Carvajal to make it his own. Dani Carvajal was elevated to main first-team captain after the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 as Luka Modrić left the club. He may not have lived up to expectations as a leader, but that will not affect his otherwise perfect career, steeped in pure Madridismo. At his peak, he was a rock at the back, a relentless vessel of ball progression and the provider of some of the most iconic assists in club history. He overcame heart problems, got over an ACL injury, gave up gluten, and just kept coming back, because that’s what Real Madrid does. Carvajal did not forget his former teammates and coaches as he delivered an emotional farewell speech on Saturday evening at the Bernabéu. He was the final custodian of the threepeat. As he bids farewell, Real Madrid truly are now in a new era. He leaves behind a legacy of perseverance; he is the reference for what a kid from La Fábrica can do.

Gerard Martin rates his season with Barcelona after switching position

(Photo by JOSE JORDAN / AFP via Getty Images) | AFP via Getty Images Gerard Martin has reflected on his excellent season with Barcelona which has seen him shift over to center-back and impress in the heart of the backline. The 24-year-old has come in for plenty of criticism in the past but has shone this season after moving into a central role. Martin says he’s happy with how he’s played for Hansi Flick’s side. “I think I’ve had a very good season. I started as a full-back, then I moved to center-back, a position I hadn’t played before, but I’ve felt very comfortable there. I think I’ve competed at the level that Barcelona demands,” he said after Barcelona’s final game of the season against Valencia. “At a collective level, the same, we came from winning three titles, which is not easy at all, and this year we have had some bad knockout rounds, but in the League we have been very good and we also won the Super Cup.” Martin also spoke about the blow to the head he took to his head against Valencia. The defender needed stitches but was able to continue. “The kick hurt at first. I felt pain, but later I noticed blood. They treated me, put stitches in, and then I was able to go back and play,“ he added. Martin is now hoping for a World Cup call up with Spain. Luis de la Fuente will announce his squad on Monday.

‘Ready to face anyone’ – Hansi Flick issues strong response to Jose Mourinho question after Barcelona’s final game
VALENCIA, SPAIN - MAY 23: Hans-Dieter Flick head coach of FC Barcelona looks on prior to the LaLiga EA Sports match between Valencia CF and FC Barcelona at Estadi de Mestalla on May 23, 2026 in Valencia, Spain. (Photo by Omar Arnau/Quality Sport Images/Getty Images) | Getty Images Hansi Flick was quizzed on the possibility of coming up against Jose Mourinho next season if the 63-year-old takes over at rivals Real Madrid. Mourinho is expected to replace Alvaro Arbeloa as coach and return to the Santiago Bernabeu for another spell as coach. Flick was asked what he felt about taking on the so-called ‘Special One’ and says he’d welcome the challenge. “Yes, why not? He’s the opposing team’s coach, and I’m always ready to face anyone,” he said after Barcelona’s final game of the season against Valencia. Flick also spoke about his team’s performance and admitted his team hadn’t been at their best at Mestalla. “We made some rather easy mistakes after going down 0-1, and they capitalized on them to score the goals that gave them the victory,” he added. “This defeat doesn’t affect the season we’ve had, which ended with the title. We accept the result because Valencia’s victory was more than deserved. It was clear they had more to play for. “We have to understand that the World Cup is coming up and that’s a dream for any footballer. It’s understandable that the players have focused a bit more on that important goal, and I have to understand that. “Now I have to analyze things to improve in the future. There were things today that weren’t quite right, but the season has been good, we’re champions, and now we’re going on vacation to prepare for another season.” While most of Barca’s players will now switch to World Cup mode, the boss will be able to have a well-deserved break before beginning plans for next season.

Valencia vs Barcelona, La Liga: Final Score 3-1, Robert Lewandowski scores farewell goal as Barça lose season finale
Photo by JOSE JORDAN / AFP via Getty Images Barcelona’s season has officially come to an end as the Catalans suffered a 3-1 defeat to Valencia at Mestalla on Saturday night’s La Liga finale. The back-to-back champions had nothing to play for but still took the lead thanks to Robert Lewandowski’s last goal for the club, but Valencia completed a furious comeback at home to finally end a run of humiliating losses against the Blaugrana. Reactions & Observations Valencia were determined to avoid another humiliating loss to Barça and came out with plenty of energy and intensity, pressing high up the pitch to force mistakes and create chances. The home team had several good moments early on, and missed a few strong opportunities to take the lead. Barça didn’t have much to play for and it showed as their performance was disjointed and lacking true invention up front. Ferran Torres is always motivated against his former club and was Barça’s most active player on the pitch, but the best chance of the half fell to Robert Lewandowski who headed a corner-kick against the post just before halftime. The game was goalless at the break, and Barça were lucky to not be losing to a Valencia side that outplayed and outworked them in the first half. Valencia continued to apply pressure to begin the final period but were punished by Barça’s departing legend, as Lewandowski deflected a shot from Ferran into the net to score the 120th and final goal of his amazing Blaugrana career and put the Catalans ahead. But Valencia answered quickly thanks to an error by young Xavi Espart, who came on at halftime but gave the ball away to Javi Guerra who fired it home and equalized for the hosts shortly after the hour mark. Then Luis Rioja gave them the lead five minutes later, and Valencia completed the comeback to send the crowd into a frenzy. Barça tried to pull off a late equalizer and Andreas Christensen had two huge chances denied by Stole Dimitrievski saves, and Guido Rodríguez scored from the edge of the box shortly before the final whistle came to end Barça’s season on a losing note. The result and the game mean nothing, and drawing conclusions from a dead rubber on Matchday 38 less than three weeks from the World Cup is silly. Barça’s season is still great despite the loss on the finale. Well done, boys!

Immediate Reaction: Real Madrid 4-2 Athletic Bilbao

Be sure to catch: Player ratings, interviews and a podcast. For Dani Carvajal, David Alaba and likely a couple of others, this was the last time that they would pull on the jersey of Real Madrid. Álvaro Arbeloa would also be saying his goodbyes – starting Thiago Pitarch until the end. Fede Valverde also started in midfield, with a number of youngsters making the bench. Dani Carvajal captained the team for the final time. 📋✅ Our starting XI! 🆚 @Athletic_en pic.twitter.com/W9eqxWbip3 — Real Madrid C.F. 🇬🇧🇺🇸 (@realmadriden) May 23, 2026 The first half: great! Gonzalo García scored early, assisted by the main man Dani Carvajal. Jude Bellingham made it two, with his weaker foot – before Athletic Bilbao pulled one back before half-time. 🫲 @gonzalo7garcia_ 🫱 pic.twitter.com/Jb0aqkJtDK — Real Madrid C.F. 🇬🇧🇺🇸 (@realmadriden) May 23, 2026 Kylian Mbappé scored the third to push Real Madrid ahead, in a slightly slower half of football. Dani Carvajal was substituted late in order to give him the standing ovation he deserves. A club legend. Brahim Díaz made it four late on, and Bilbao even managed to sneak a goal in before the final whistle – which brought this miserable season to a close. Finally… What needs to happen this summer at Real Madrid ahead of next season?

Barcelona Femení complete historic second Quadruple with 4-0 win over Lyon in Women’s Champions League Final
Photo by Odd ANDERSEN / AFP via Getty Images Barcelona continue to rewrite women’s football history as the Blaugrana have claimed a second Quadruple in three years thanks to a 4-0 win against OL Lyonnes in Saturday’s Women’s Champions League Final in Oslo, Norway. After a very even first half the Catalans established their superiority in the final period, and Ewa Pajor and Salma Paralluelo shined with two goals each to give the Catalans a fourth Champions League title in six years as they remain the most dominant side in the sport. EL PÒQUER JA ÉS AQUÍ!!!!!! pic.twitter.com/vo6uqFfogu — FC Barcelona Femení (@FCBfemeni) May 23, 2026 The opening 45 minutes were very even with both teams having strong moments and trading big chances against each other. Lyon had the lead early on but Lindsey Heaps’ goal was disallowed for offside, and Selma Bacha’s free-kick required a sensational save from Cata Coll later in the half. Barça also had two massive chances of their own but Ewa Pajor was uncharacteristically wasteful by her very high standards, and neither team could find the net in the opening period despite some really good football from both sides. If the story of Barça’s first half was Ewa Pajor’s wastefulness, the story of the second was her scoring brilliance: the Pole fired a beautiful low shot into the bottom corner after an assist by Patri Guijarro 10 minutes into the period, then tapped home an assist by Salma Paralluelo with 20 minutes to go to finish off a perfect counter-attack and give Barça a monster two-goal lead to put the Blaugrana in a great position to win the title. Lyon desperately tried to find their way back in the contest and Cata Coll made a monster save one-on-one with Tabitha Chawinga, but that turned out to be their last chance and there was time for a spectacular ending for Barça: Paralluelo fired a sensational strike from outside the box into the top corner to make it 3-0 and seal the win and the title, and scored another on the counter to turn the win into an absolute dream. The final whistle came to end a perfect evening for Barça, who were absolutely fantastic in the second half and deservedly beat their biggest European nemesis. Ewa Pajor finally has a Champions League title, and Alexia Putellas may very well have played her last game for Barça and ends her career in glorious fashion. Well done, ladies!

Barcelona and Lyon face off in Women’s Champions League Final for the ages
BARCELONA, SPAIN - MAY 03: Alexia Putellas of FC Barcelona celebrates scoring her team's second goal during the UEFA Women's Champions League 2025/26 Semi-Final Second Leg match between FC Barcelona and FC Bayern München at Nou Camp on May 03, 2026 in Barcelona, Spain. (Photo by Juanma - UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images) | UEFA via Getty Images FC Barcelona Femení and OL Lyonnes face off in Oslo tonight for the UEFA Women’s Champions League title, a blockbuster final defined by two of the best teams in Europe – and a managerial swap. Former Barça boss Jonatan Giráldez is now leading the French champions, while his former assistant, Pere Romeu, looks to secure a domestic treble for the Catalan giants in his first season in charge. “I see a team that is more mature than last season,” Romeu said ahead of the match, adding that his squad possesses a greater ability to alter tactics mid-game compared to the side that fell to Arsenal in last year’s final. That was then, this is now. Now the student faces off against his former master, in a game that sees the two titans of women’s football square off. It’s not just the two coaches that share history. The two clubs have met three times in the Champions League final before. Lyon were dominant in 2019 (winning 4-1) and 2022 (winning 3-1). But Barça roared back with a 2-0 victory in Bilbao two years ago. In the buildup, Alexia Putellas brushed off the idea that history will dictate the present. “We can’t compare seasons and we can’t compare finals,” the two-time Ballon d’Or winner insisted. Stylistically, this is a clash of polar opposites. Barcelona want to suffocate teams with possession and relentless passing, while Lyon lean into aggressive, high-pressing transitions. The way to beat the Catalans, analysts say, is to pack the midfield. Not that many teams have accomplished it this season. In fact, Barcelona have only lost one match – against Real Sociedad. But they have two draws in Europe, one each against Chelsea and Bayern Munich. In those matches, opponents found joy by deploying five-man blocks to deny central space, forcing Barça wide. In fact, Bayern managed to make the blaugrana attempt 28 open-play crosses in their semifinal first leg, which was their highest mark all season. Another question mark for Barcelona is the availability of Aitana Bonmatí. The midfielder has been building up strength after a five-month layoff with a broken leg, but she hasn’t played a full 90 minutes since November. Romeu mentioned she is improving daily, but she’s likely to be on the bench. Immense pressure falls on Patri Guijarro to control the tempo in her absence. On the bright side, Caroline Graham Hansen and Irene Paredes both trained normally in Oslo after recent fitness scares. Pushing full-backs high can leave Barcelona exposed on the counter, a vulnerability Lyon’s flying midfielder Melchie Dumornay is perfectly equipped to punish. But if executed properly, the high press can leave Lyon without oxygen. Barcelona’s beautiful fluid football can leave the other side dizzy. Players making quick passes and moving in and out of spaces, alternating positions… it can be a joy to watch. Lyon will certainly have their hands full. With that combination of pressing, passing, movement, and also, set piece efficiency, Barça just secured another domestic treble by brushing aside Atlético de Madrid 3-1 in the Copa de la Reina. Lyon are chasing their own domestic treble next week. They will be looking to re-establish their legacy as the queens of Europe. That reputation used to put fear into other teams. That may no longer be the case. Barcelona goalkeeper Cata Coll said that Lyon’s fear factor was removed when they beat the eight-time champions two years ago. But Lyon remain fiercely hungry. Midfielder Lily Yohannes told UEFA that the group possesses an intense desire after a three-year European drought. As the squad prepared to leave their hotel, they were met with a legendary reminder. Emblazoned for the players to see before boarding the team bus was Johan Cruyff’s iconic phrase: “Go out and enjoy.”

The final weekend of the league season has nine games kicking off at the same time on Saturday, and every single match has huge implications in what promises to be a wild two hours that will decide relegation and the final spots in European competition next season. Valencia still have a slim chance of getting into Europe but achieved their main goal of avoiding the drop last week with an absolutely insane 4-3 victory against Real Sociedad when Los Che came back from 3-2 down with 10 men and scored a 94th minute winner at Anoeta to seal survival in dramatic fashion. They essentially have nothing to play for against a Barça side that are also just happy to be here, so both teams will play pressure-free football on Saturday in front of what is always a great crowd. But Valencia have another motivating factor for this one: end a humiliating run of results against Barça. Since Hansi Flick took over last summer, the Catalans have won all four games against Valencia by a combined score of 20-2, including 7-1, 5-0 and 6-0 wins in the last three. Valencia have had no answers for Flick’s attacking machine so far and will be hungry to finally stop the Catalans from destroying them, and pulling off an upset at home would be a nice way to wrap up a tough season for a proud club. Barça on the other hand truly have nothing to play for as they can’t get to 100 points and the goal of finishing the season with a historic perfect home record was achieved last week, so this one is all about breaking a sweat, avoiding injuries so close to the World Cup, and having some fun against a team they’ve dominated recently. Another great season for Hansi Flick’s Barça will come to an end. Enjoy it one last time. Let’s dance. POSSIBLE LINEUPS Barcelona (4-2-3-1): Joan; Eric, Cubarsí, Martín, Cancelo; De Jong, Pedri; Raphinha, Olmo, Gavi; Ferran Valencia (4-4-2): Dmitrievski; Correia, Tárrega, Núñez, Vázquez; Rioja, Ugrinic, Rodríguez, López; Guerra, Duro PREDICTION Barça are very comfortable against Valencia but will face an opponent hungry to finally end a run of very bad defeats, so this could be a lot of fun and full of goals despite the lack of stakes: 4-2 Barça.

James Rodriguez: “It was always my dream to play for Real Madrid”
MADRID, SPAIN - FEBRUARY 6: James Rodriguez of Real Madrid during the Spanish Copa del Rey match between Real Madrid v Real Sociedad at the Santiago Bernabeu on February 6, 2020 in Madrid Spain (Photo by David S. Bustamante/Soccrates/Getty Images) | Getty Images Former Real Madrid player James Rodriguez talked about his love for Real Madrid in his recent Netflix documentary. He talked about why he went to the club, how the move came about and a number of different things. Speaking about the interest, he said: “I remember when Jorge Mendes told me: ‘Real Madrid want you.’ It was always my dream to play for Real Madrid. I had offers from other teams. But I told myself: ‘The Real Madrid train would only come once and I am getting on that train.’” James on his relationship with Rafa Benitez “We were just clashing from the start. I didn’t like the way he thought and he didn’t seem to like the way I thought. There was a game I was playing well, he took me off 60th minute and I made a few gestures and the stadium turned against him. He thought I made them turn against him.” James on his relationship with Zinedine Zidane “It was still a beautiful thing to play under him. I trained well, when I played, I scored and got assists but when it was the big games: I wasn’t a starter. I got frustrated and didn’t know what more I could do. He always had his core 12/13 players, he chose them. But I don’t have a personal problem with him. I just wanted to play, but I respect his decision because he backed it up: he won titles.” James on Carlo Ancelotti “Carlo was like a father to me and when someone takes a chance on me… I give them my all.” James on going to Bayern Munich “Nobody knows this… but after Real Madrid: I was going to go to Manchester United and Jorge (Mendes) tells me: ‘Do you want to go to Bayern?’. And I say: ‘Where am I going to play? Ribéry, Robben…’. He tells me: ‘Carlo asked for you’. Carlo calls me and I tell him: ‘I think I’m going to Manchester’. And he responds: ‘Manchester? United is dead. You have to come here with me’.” James on leaving Real Madrid “I got home… sad, I went to cry alone, so my daughter didn’t see me. But she found me and asked why I was crying. I told her we have to leave, I need to change clubs. My heart was broken.”

Barcelona’s former coach Jonatan Giráldez can bring insider knowledge to a fourth final between the European giants You could be forgiven for having a sense of deja vu before a fourth Champions League final between the Spanish champions, Barcelona, and French title-winners, OL Lyonnes, on Saturday evening. The three-time champions and eight-time champions played each other in the final of Europe’s premier competition three times in six years between 2019 and 2024, with Lyonnes earning a 4-1 win over the Catalan giants in 2019 and a 3-1 win in 2022, before Barcelona delivered a 2-0 defeat of the French side in 2024. England’s World Cup squad talking points: from Toney’s return to clarity for Bellingham
Thomas Tuchel has placed great faith in John Stones and Djed Spence while ignoring several star names in attack Thomas Tuchel said that whittling down his 55-player longlist gave him “a certain edge”. There were some tough phone calls and some decisions inevitably caused outrage. But there was a pointed remark from Tuchel about how creating a winning team is not necessarily “to select the most talented 26 players”. The aim since September has been to build a brotherhood; Tuchel knows maintaining harmony within the camp will be crucial given that England hope to be together for seven weeks. “We have 26 players who know their role, who are committed to the idea of team spirit and being unselfish,” the German said. Was there a message to Harry Maguire after the defender aired his grievances at being overlooked? “I think it was not necessary,” Tuchel said of Maguire’s decision to go public. Continue reading...

Pep Guardiola’s perpetual revolutions have changed face of English football | Jonathan Wilson
Departing Manchester City manager has left huge imprint but equally stands alone in his willingness to adapt When Pep Guardiola arrived in English football in the summer of 2016, there was a degree of scepticism. The quality of the football produced by his Barcelona had been extraordinary – and it’s perhaps difficult now, 18 years on, to remember the impact that side had when they first emerged, how incomprehensible the focus on passing and the manipulation of space seemed. But his Bayern Munich had not won the Champions League and it was reasonable enough to ask whether that very precise, technically accomplished style would be as effective amid the hurly-burly of an English winter as it had been in Spain and Germany. ‘Farcial but strategic’ – Joan Laporta hits back at Florentino Perez for trying to ‘use Barcelona in a grotesque way’
Joan laporta Barcelona president and Florentino Perez Real Madrid President during the La Liga EA Sports match between Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on October 26, 2025 in Madrid, Spain. (Photo by Jose Breton/Pics Action/NurPhoto via Getty Images) | NurPhoto via Getty Images Barcelona president Joan Laporta has hit back at Real Madrid chief Florentino Perez and his recent bizarre rant against referees when he claimed his club had “seven league titles were stolen” from them. Laporta has had some strong words in response and says that Perez is hitting out in a bid to distract from Madrid’s trophyless run. “I think it was farcical, but it was strategic. The one I told you about… it was meant to divert attention from two years without winning anything, and this has them very worried,” he told reporters at the Koeman Cup. “Somehow they have to justify the unjustifiable, and the best way is to stir up trouble and throw everything at Barcelona. We’re not going to allow this. I’m sure we at the club will react. “As long as they don’t use Barça to cover up their problems, I respect him. When they use Barça, we react. In that press conference, they tried to use Barça in a grotesque way, spreading falsehoods about a certain issue, stating things that aren’t true.” Barca wrap up another successful league season on Saturday night against Valencia, while Real Madrid host Athletic Club.

Alexander-Arnold out of England’s list for the World Cup -report
Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to miss the upcoming FIFA World Cup as the right-back will not make Thomas Tuchel’s squad list for the tournament, according to a report from The Athletic’s David Ornstein. Although the official list hasn’t come out yet, Ornstein is always very reliable and has reported Tuchel’s final squad, with Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham included on it. It has been a rough season for Alexander-Arnold and him missing a few squad lists made sense during the winter. However, he’s stayed healthy lately and has played at a decent level, so it’s safe to assume that he’s just not on Tuchel’s plans because of his playing style. The English defender will surely try to have a bounce-back year for Real Madrid next season to prove his doubters wrong.

How will Barcelona line up against Valencia in the La Liga season finale?
Photo by Alex Caparros/Getty Images The back-to-back champions of La Liga finish the season on the road as Barcelona travel to Mestalla to face Valencia looking to end the campaign on a high note. Here’s how we think Hansi Flick will line up his troops for Saturday’s battle: Defense Barça had a full week to rest and recover after the home win against Real Betis and the players who are going to the World Cup will have some time off while the European competitions wrap up next week, so we are expecting a strong lineup from Flick in this one. We think the coach will go with his favorite back four combination as of late, with Eric Garcia ahead of Jules Kounde at right-back, Pau Cubarsí alongside Gerard Martín at center-back, and João Cancelo facing one of his former clubs at left-back. Midfield Fermín López received some brutal injury news as he’s out of the World Cup with a broken foot, so Barça will be without one of their best players for this one as well. We are expecting Dani Olmo to return to the side in Fermín’s spot, and we think Frenkie de Jong and Pedri will finally reunite as a double pivot to give the Dutchman extended minutes as he builds up his fitness for the World Cup. Attack Marcus Rashford didn’t play due to a minor injury last week and is unlikely to start this one to make sure of his place in the England squad for the World Cup, so we think Gavi will start on the left wing with Raphinha on the right and Ferran Torres facing his former club and leading the line after Robert Lewandowski’s farewell last week. Possible XI: Joan; Eric, Cubarsí, Martín, Cancelo; De Jong, Pedri; Raphinha, Olmo, Gavi; Ferran (4-2-3-1) How do you think Barcelona should line up against Valencia? Let us know your thoughts, predictions and teams in the comments below!

Barcelona edging closer to buying Hamza Abdelkarim permanently
Photo by Sayed Hassan/Getty Images Hamza Abdelkarim is forcing Barcelona to make a quick decision on his future. According to Mundo Deportivo, club sources admit that executing his permanent purchase option is now highly likely, even if the board has not officially announced the move. The striker arrives at this turning point after a wild week where he made Egypt’s 27-man preliminary FIFA World Cup squad and immediately followed it up by scoring a brilliant chipped goal to beat UD Las Palmas 2-0 on Thursday night. The permanent clause is reportedly worth €3 million, plus up to €5 million including bonuses. Due to his rise and evident talent, Barcelona’s top brass is strongly leaning towards making the move permanent, according to rumor. What’s unusual is that bureaucratic paperwork has actually blocked him from playing under Juliano Belletti for Barça Atlètic. He has spent his entire stint since arriving in February tucked away in Pol Planas’s U19 setup instead. Some say that Egyptian coach Hossam Hassan took a massive gamble by naming an academy player to a World Cup roster. But the Egyptian federation had sent scouts to follow his progress for weeks, and if he survives the final squad cut, the 18-year-old will share a tournament dressing room with stars such as Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush. We saw exactly why the national team is paying attention during the semifinal win in Alcalá de Henares. In the 41st minute, Quim Junyent created an opening with a quick bit of skill, Orian Goren slid a pass into the channel, and Hamza subtly lifted the ball over the keeper with his right foot. Winger Álex González scored a second late in the game to guarantee a youth Clásico against Real Madrid this Sunday. Hamza has been dynamic ever since Barcelona became aware of him at the U17 World Cup in Qatar late last year. He adjusted to European football almost instantly, finishing the regular season in early May with a 15-minute hat-trick during a 9-0 thrashing of Montecarlo.

‘Lesson that will serve me well’ – Barcelona’s Pau Cubarsi says he’s learned from his red card against Atletico
BARCELONA, SPAIN - APRIL 08: Referee Istvan Kovacs shows a red card to Pau Cubarsi of FC Barcelona following a VAR review after a challenge on Giuliano Simeone of Atletico de Madrid (not pictured) during the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 Quarter-Final First Leg match between FC Barcelona and Club Atlético de Madrid at Camp Nou on April 08, 2026 in Barcelona, Spain. (Photo by Alex Caparros - UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images) | UEFA via Getty Images Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi has been talking about his red card against Atletico Madrid this season and says it’s an experience that he will learn from. Cubarsi saw red in the Champions League defeat to Diego Simeone’s side in April and was quick to take responsibility after the 2-0 first-leg defeat. The defender admits he could have done better and will learn from the game. “There’s always a way to do better, even playing with an advanced defense, but these are things that happen and in milliseconds you have to decide what to do or not; it’s a lesson that will serve me well in the future,” he told Marca. “I’m 19 years old and I have a long way to go, but I need to keep accumulating experience and that will help me over time to try to take on a leadership role, because the defender, after the goalkeeper, sees the whole field and it’s important to improve in that area.” Cubarsi was also asked about Alvaro Cortes, after Hansi Flick handed the defender a debut against Alaves, and had plenty of praise for his team-mate. “Cortés is a guy who’s a little older than me, he’s spectacular and he’s the captain of the reserve team. If he keeps up this intensity and character, he could do very well in the world of football,” he added. Cortes will be hoping for more chances from Hansi Flick in the future and has already made it clear he’d love to stay at the club and following Cubarsi into the first team.

Real Madrid Continue Preparations for Athletic Club Clash
MADRID, SPAIN - MAY 21: Jude Bellingham player of Real Madrid is training at Ciudad Real Madrid on May 21, 2026 in Madrid, Spain. (Photo by David S. Bustamante/Real Madrid via Getty Images) | Real Madrid via Getty Images Real Madrid completed another training session at Valdebebas on Thursday morning as they continued preparing for Saturday’s La Liga finale against Athletic Club at the Santiago Bernabéu. With the season set to conclude this weekend, the session featured a mix of positive returns and continued absences for Alvaro Arbeloa’s squad. The workout began indoors with strength and conditioning exercises before moving onto the pitch, where the players worked through rondos, possession drills, and small-sided matches. One of the players who returned for Real Madrid was Fede Valverde, who is back in training after missing the team’s last three league games due to a knock suffered from his scuffle with Aurelien Thouameni. The Uruguayan is expected to be available for Saturday’s match and could slot back into the starting lineup for the final game of the campaign. Dani Carvajal also trained normally with the group. The veteran full-back is expected to start against Athletic Club in what will be an emotional farewell appearance at the Bernabéu. The club is preparing a tribute for Carvajal, who recently confirmed that he will leave Real Madrid at the end of the season after a legendary career in white. However, Madrid were still without several key players in today’s training. Aurélien Tchouaméni remained indoors due to muscle discomfort and is increasingly unlikely to feature this weekend. Vinicius Jr. was absent from training with the club’s permission for personal reasons, and there is also uncertainty surrounding his availability for the match. The Brazilian forward could instead begin his break early before linking up with Carlo Ancelotti and the Brazilian national team. Trent Alexander-Arnold also missed the session due to a viral infection. Meanwhile, Ferland Mendy, Éder Militão, and Rodrygo continued their respective recovery programs away from the group as they work toward full fitness. Real Madrid will close out their La Liga campaign on Saturday night against an Athletic Club side led by Ernesto Valverde, who will also be managing his final match for the Basque club.

Andy Robertson: ‘It was easy to fall in love with Liverpool – I’m fortunate Liverpool fell in love with me’
As he prepares to say farewell to the club, the veteran left-back considers the highs – and tragic lows – of a stellar career at Anfield There was the Barcelona comeback on the night he ruffled Lionel Messi’s hair, the Champions League triumph in Madrid, winning Liverpool’s first league title in 30 years and pressing five Manchester City players in one career-defining run at Anfield when 4-1 up. But the best feeling Andy Robertson experienced at Liverpool was “climbing the mountain” with Jürgen Klopp’s all-conquering team. Nobody climbed higher or harder. The boy who was rejected by Celtic at 15 and tweeted: “Life at this age is rubbish with no money” after his debut for Queen’s Park aged 18 became the man many consider to be Liverpool’s finest left-back, and arguably the best in the world at his peak. With 377 fiercely committed appearances in a Liverpool shirt behind him, Robertson will say goodbye on Sunday. The 32-year-old Scotland captain leaves “with no regrets, no bitterness” and “glad that one of our Egyptian friends might take a bit more of the limelight. I can just sneak underneath that.” Continue reading...

Haaland’s Norway to Ronaldo’s swansong: Who are the most likely first-time World Cup winners?
Eight nations have won the World Cup. An expanded field and a grueling schedule means a new champion could emerge from the pack this summer When Fifa expanded the field for the 2026 World Cup to 48 teams, the sales pitch included giving more nations a chance at glory. In reality, the favorites are nearly always former champions. To date, only eight nations have won the men’s World Cup. And yet, few of the former champions arrive at this summer’s tournament in their finest form. Spain are a justifiably popular pick as the reigning European champions have plenty of world-class talent. Argentina will hope to defend their title from 2022 after following it up with the Copa América in 2024. France, who top our power rankings, have reached the last two finals, and Kylian Mbappé claims this squad is the best he has been a part of. Continue reading...

‘Off the charts’ – Eric Garcia on his link-up with Lamine Yamal at Barcelona

(Photo by Jose Breton/Pics Action/NurPhoto via Getty Images) | NurPhoto via Getty Images Eric Garcia has been talking about what it’s like to play at right-back for Barcelona and how he links up with Lamine Yamal. The versatile Spain star has featured in a range of positions under Hansi Flick this season and has been used in central defence, right-back and in midfield. Reports have suggested that Flick will use Eric primarily as a right-back next season, and he’s detailed how he works with Yamal when the two are in the starting XI together. “If Lamine has a one-on-one with the defender, I will hardly go up because I know he will dribble past him and do his thing. But when he is double or even triple marked, which has happened a lot this season, then I need to go there to add a new layer to the attack,” he told The Athletic. “Since the first day we played together, we got along really well. I always try to adapt to him. If I’m the right-back, I try to have a quick chat with him before the game to know what he wants from me — if he prefers me overlapping, underlapping, if I have to wait behind him… whatever he senses is best. “Because, besides his skill and dribbling, Lamine’s decision-making is off the charts. He has the intelligence to see what’s best in every game, so all I can do is adapt and try to help him shine. In training, he does things sometimes you really can’t believe.” The right-back position will be one to watch next season. Jules Kounde has struggled for his best form this season and may face a battle with Eric for his starting sport.

On This Day in 1998: La Septima
Real Madrid celebrate wining the match (Photo by Tony Marshall/EMPICS via Getty Images) | PA Images via Getty Images 28 years ago tonight, in Amsterdam, Real Madrid won the European Cup for the seventh time and the first since 1966. Nobody outside the dressing room thought it was coming. Madrid had finished fourth in La Liga, 11 points behind Barcelona. Juventus were in their third Champions League final in a row. At Juventus, Marcello Lippi had Zinedine Zidane, Alessandro Del Piero, Edgar Davids, and Didier Deschamps. LA SÉPTIMA. 20/05/1998 pic.twitter.com/7ROMKfOS3W — Real Madrid C.F. (@realmadrid) May 20, 2026 The goal came in the 66th minute. Roberto Carlos drove in from the left, the shot was blocked, the ball squirted out to Predrag Mijatović, and from a tight angle, he lifted it past Angelo Peruzzi. Juve never recovered. Thirty-two years. Six European Cups that most of the people in the stadium had only ever seen in black and white. Mijatović himself, years later, said winning it was “like passing from black and white into colour.” Heynckes was sacked within a fortnight. Fourth in La Liga, the board decided, was unforgivable. He went and won it again with Bayern in 2013. Real Madrid have won eight more Champions League titles since then.

(Photo by Joan Valls/Urbanandsport/NurPhoto via Getty Images) | NurPhoto via Getty Images Barcelona midfielder Frankie de Jong says his team are going to really miss Robert Lewandowski after he leaves at the end of the season. The 37-year-old is moving on after four excellent seasons with the Catalans and De Jong knows he will be a big loss. “We’re going to miss him terribly. I think he’s scored 70 goals in four seasons. And besides that, he’s been an absolute role model for how he takes care of himself and how he does everything possible to stay in top physical condition,” he told Sport. “Seeing him like that at 37 is impressive. I think he’s been very important these past four years, especially for the young players coming up to the first team. “Having the example of someone like Robert, who has won everything, and seeing how he trains and takes care of himself, has been very important for us.” Lewandowksi will play his final game for Barcelona on Saturday against Valencia in La Liga. Barca will then spend the summer trying to bring in a replacement for the Poland international.

‘High pressing for 90 minutes is difficult’ – Eric Garcia reveals the ‘solution that made us better’ after defeat to Atletico
Eric Garcia of FC Barcelona reacts to an Atletico de Madrid goal during the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 Quarter-Final second leg match between Atletico de Madrid and FC Barcelona at Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, Spain, on April 14. (Photo by Guillermo Martinez/NurPhoto via Getty Images) | NurPhoto via Getty Images Barcelona have enjoyed a successful season by winning La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup but did suffer disappointment in the Champions League and Copa del Rey. Atletico Madrid knocked Barcelona out of both competitions and Eric Garcia has revealed what the team learnt from the painful 4-0 defeat to Diego Simeone’s side in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final. “After those games, I think we learnt how to read games better,” he told The Athletic. “There’s moments when the opponents have the ball, and you are tired after four, five or six consecutive presses, so you better hold it a bit and find your balance. We had meetings with the team, talking everything through, and found a solution that has made us better. “We have been more solid since. In the Champions League quarter-finals, we did not lose against Atletico because of pressing badly. It’s something in which we have improved and evolved, and I think it can be the path to follow to go to the next level. “High-pressing for 90 minutes is very difficult, and now we know there are moments when, if we don’t have the right legs or positioning on the pitch, you possibly take a step back, read the room and decide when to jump and press again. This is what Paris Saint-Germain did in the return leg of the Champions League semi-finals against Bayern Munich. When they could, they went pressing man-to-man. When they couldn’t, they waited deeper.” Barcelona will go again next season with Hansi Flick having already warned his players they will have to “work harder” next year as they aim to bring more silverware back to Camp Nou.

Enrique Riquelme will run for Real Madrid president -report
Florentino Pérez will not be the only candidate running for Real Madrid president in the upcoming election as Enrique Riquelme has finalized the details of his candidacy and will officially announce it this week, requesting two debates against Florentino Pérez, according to a report from Radio MARCA and El Confidencial. Pérez’s chances of getting re-elected are still very high though, but Riquelme’s candidacy would ultimately delay Real Madrid’s plans of appointing José Mourinho as head coach, given that Pérez would have to wait until winning the election. The deadline for Riquelme to confirm and announce his candidacy is on May 23rd.
