The Dutchman has been working separately as he recovers from an injury sustained at the World Cup but was with the group on Tuesday. Barcelona are reportedly going easy on De Jong currently and are hoping he can be given the green light to return to competitive action at the end of this month. Hansi Flick was also able to welcome back Karim Adeyemi from international duty as well as he focuses on the return of La Liga and a game with Getafe on Saturday. Adeyemi was released early from the Germany squad, with Jurgen Klopp using two squads for his fixtures over the international break as he runs the rule over a host of players. The rest of the internationals will return later in the week as Barcelona aim to get back to work and continue thei perfect start to the season.

According to MARCA, Hansi Flick will take a cautious approach and only bring Raphinha back into the lineup once he feels full confidence in his captain’s fitness, and a rest in the next La Liga at home to Getafe is the most likely outcome for Barça’s first game back from the international break. The report says Flick blames himself for Raphinha’s absence through injury in important moments last season, including both legs of the Champions League quarterfinal exit to Atlético Madrid. Xavi has also been unable to call up De Jong to his first Netherlands squad due to the problem but says the midfielder is feeling good. “I was talking to him, we have a very good relationship. The Catalans have spent time in the stadium over the last few seasons and will start the 2027-28 campaign at Montjuic, according to ESPN. The report adds that Barcelona may end up playing the first half of the season away from Camp Nou as they are not scheduled to return to their famous home until January 2028. The capacity is set to be increased to around 95,000 when Barcelona do move back in and will then finally reach 105,000 when the redevelopment work is finally completed. Barcelona will be hoping that the work is completed on time, particularly as there were delays in the initial redevelopment work which ultimately saw the team spend more time at Montjuic than originally planned. Camp Nou has already been confirmed as the venue for the 2029 Champions League final, with Joan Laporta also hoping the 2030 World Cup final can be played at Barcelona’s home.

Christensen started the game in the heart of the defence alongside Pau Cubarsi and picked up an assist for Barcelona’s equaliser from Raphinha. The Brazilian scored again in the second half to make it 2-1 but Christensen didn’t see out the game as he was forced out on the hour after picking up what looked to be a muscle injury. The problem does at least come at a relatively good time for Barca as La Liga is about to pause for a three-week international break. Christensen had been called up by Denmark for games against Norway, Wales and Portugal but it looks now as if he’ll have to drop out.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the vote was taken on Friday and Barcelona’s five captains for the new campaign were confirmed. The report claims Flick decided that Raphinha and Pedri would stay as the first two captains. The players then voted for Garcia, De Jong and Yamal. De Jong was already part of the captaincy group, while Garcia has previously been tipped to wear the armband at Camp Nou. The inclusion of Yamal is perhaps the big surprise as he’s still only 19. However, there’s no doubt he’s one of the team’s biggest stars and has already won La Liga and Copa del Rey titles with Barca as well as the World Cup and the Euros with Spain.

The competition is maximum, but it is good news,” he told reporters. Yet Flick also seemed to sound out a warning to De Jong that he will have to fight for his place once he is fully fit once again. “We have to manage all the players well, they come from playing a lot of minutes in the World Cup,” he added. “Everyone wants to play, but no one is above the team. The team is number one.” De Jong is still not ready to even return to training with Barcelona. He reportedly tested out his knee earlier this week on the training ground but was still feeling pain.

After a not very good performance in the opener against Elche that generated millions of online overreactions to a supposedly bad body language followed by unfounded theories about the reasons for his alleged foul mood, Yamal came back with a better performance against Athletic that helped quiet down the outside noise. Flick was asked at a press conference on Sunday about Yamal, and the coach had an absolutely perfect answer. “It’s always good when a player smiles, but not every day is the same. I don’t smile every day either. Everyone is worried about him, but he played in a World Cup after an injury. He’s had three weeks of vacation. He’s played two matches; the first one maybe wasn’t his best, but I’m happy because he gives us more, he creates opportunities… against Athletic he played the full 90 minutes, I saw him at his best. Today [in training] he was excellent. He’s on the right track. We have to support him, and I’m going to do it.” Athletic Club coach Edin Terzic also spoke in similar terms about Yamal, and it’s always good to hear actual adults being mature about one of the most talented young players in recent history who, like the rest of us, is allowed to have a bad day. But the internet won’t learn, so we await the next overreaction.

Hansi Flick was asked about Balde in a press conference on Wednesday and said he will be back in the squad for Thursday’s La Liga clash with Athletic Club and made it clear he’s happy to have Balde in the group, but sent a message about what’s expected of the young left-back. “He’s part of the squad for tomorrow. Whether he plays or not, I’ll decide. I’ve spoken with him, and the important thing is that he’s 100% committed to us. He’s 22 and very young, he has potential. His first season here was fantastic, but he can improve even more. He comes from La Masia and has Barça colors in his heart, but he needs to be here and improve. Every year, three or four players from La Masia come here who also want to play. They have to be 100% committed to professional football.” Flick’s message on Wednesday is the exact same message from his press conference last Saturday: he’s happy to have Balde around as long as the left-back is 100% committed to stay and fight for his spot, as is the expectation for every single other player in the squad. It’s incredibly sad that a group of Barça fans on social media decided to believe in media reports instead of Flick’s words and built an entire campaign asking for Hansi’s departure under the assumption that the coach “hated La Masia” and wanted Balde gone. Flick simply wants a very talented young player who still has room to improve to be fully professional, work hard and fight for his place in the starting lineup of one of the best teams on the planet. If holding somebody accountable is “hating”, something is seriously wrong with the world.

The Barcelona midfielder has been out on the pitch to test out how his knee is doing but is still feeling discomfort, according to Diario Sport. De Jong did some “solo runs and very controlled exercises” under the guidance of the medical staff but still felt pain during the session. The midfielder opted to undergo conservative treatment on his knee injury, rather than undergo surgery, and it sounds as though there’s still some way to go before he’s ready to return to training with his team-mates. De Jong suffered the injury at World Cup 2026 and has said he was given the green light to play through the pain barrier. The full extent of the problem was only diagnosed when he underwent tests after returning to Barcelona. There’s been no indication from Barcelona of when De Jong is expected to return, although reports have claimed it’s expected he will be out for several months with the problem.

Flick had words of praise for Tunkara during pre-season and he’s widely regarded as one of the club’s most exciting talents currently coming through the ranks.

Indeed there’s been speculation that Flick sees him as a potential future false nine in his team.
