‘A good conversation’ – Marc Casado reveals talks with Hansi Flick over his Barcelona future
Madrid, Spain - February 12: Hansi Flick, head coach of FC Barcelona and Marc Casado of FC Barcelona gestures during the Copa Del Rey match between Atletico de Madrid and FC Barcelona at Riyadh Air Metropolitano on February 12, 2026 in Madrid, Spain. (Photo by Manu Reino/DeFodi Images/DeFodi via Getty Images) | DeFodi Images via Getty Images Marc Casado says he’s already spoken with Barcelona boss Hansi Flick about his future amid talk that he will be sold by the club this summer. The midfielder has made it clear that his preference is to stay at the Camp Nou, but he’s also aware that he is one of seven midfielders battling for a starting spot at present. Casado and Flick spoke at the end of the previous campaign and the midfielder told La Vanguardia: “It was a good conversation. As long as the club and the manager want me, I’ll give my all to help the team.” Flick is said to have told Casado “to consider a move to get more playing time” but the 22-year-old will wait until the end of pre-season before making a final decision. “If I ever leave, I’d definitely like to come back. As long as the club and the coach want me, my first choice will be Barça,” he added. Casado seems to have attracted plenty of interest already but one thing seems clear – he’s in absolutely no rush to leave the club he joined when he was just 13.

‘It’s a great pain’ – Raphinha speaks out after Brazil’s World Cup 2026 exit
(Photo by Richard Sellers/Sportsphoto/Allstar via Getty Images) | Getty Images Barcelona star Raphinha has reflected on Brazil’s exit from World Cup 2026 after seeing their dreams ended in the last 16 by Norway. Raphinha only played twice at the World Cup due to injury and says the early exit from the competition is a painful one to take. “It is a great pain that we have not reached where we dreamed of together, you and us. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out how we imagined. It’s part of the sport. The defeat won’t always be what we want, but the pride of representing Brazil and of fighting to the end will never be erased. And for all our children who cry with us today, don’t give up on your dreams. Perhaps you have watched this Cup imagining what it would be like to be there one day. Keep that dream in your heart,” he wrote on Instagram. “You are our next generation. Keep believing, training, persevering and loving football. It’s dreams that Brazil has always lived, and it will be the dreams of you that will continue to write the history of our national team. I am honored to be Brazilian and to be part of this selection. Wearing this shirt and representing our country is a privilege that I will take with me forever. Regardless of the outcome, being part of this story is something I am extremely proud of.” View this post on Instagram Raphinha will now enjoy a break before returning to pre-season with Barcelona. The Catalans will be hoping that the forward can put his injury problems behind in 2026-27 and rediscover the inspirational form that has seen him become of the best players in the world during his time at Camp Nou.

Thiago was chatting with Rio Ferdinand and was asked to build his dream three-man midfield of current players playing today. Pedri was the first name on Thiago’s list. He explained: “Pedri, the best midfield player for me in the world right now. “When I was a player and played with him and when I was a coach now, I had the same feeling that I had with Andres Iniesta at that time. “Of this plasticity while playing, like moving all the time in diagonal, and while you’re moving, you see what’s happening around you and taking the right decisions.” Thiago also went for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Vitinha and Arsenal’s Declan Rice as his two other midfield choices. The World Cup’s first knockout game set the bar high
Photo by Patrick T. Fallon / AFP via Getty Images The first-ever Round of 32 game in a World Cup took place in Los Angeles as South Africa and Canada battled for a place in the Last 16, and the other 30 teams in this round have work to do to top the fun we had on Sunday. Expectations were not very high for a meeting between a South African side that somehow found a way to sneak into the knockouts despite a very poor performance in the group stage and a Canadian team that lost the chance to play at home with a defeat in the group stage finale and came into the game without the injured Ismaël Koné and with Alphonso Davies only fit enough to play the final 20 minutes. But the match still delivered, with a really good tactical battle between a high-intensity, high-pressing Canada against a short-passing, patient South Africa. The stadium eventually grew tired of watching the Bafana Bafana pass the ball back to goalkeeper Ronwen Williams so often, but the strategy worked as South Africa created some really good chances from those long, patient sequences of possession. Canada also had their big moments on set pieces and counter-attacks, and Davies’ introduction late in the second half injected more energy into the attack. But it looked as though we were headed for extra-time and possibly penalties, until Stephen Eustáquio scored the biggest goal in Canadian football history in the 92nd minute. It was an amazing ending to a very fun battle that showed why the World Cup is just the best thing there is. Canada and South Africa were not expected to deliver such drama and entertainment, but they’ve now set a high bar for the rest of the knockouts.

Barcelona were hoping Ronald Araujo would shine at World Cup 2026. Then he got injured.
(Photo by MB Media/Getty Images) | Getty Images Ronald Araujo’s injury, and Uruguay’s unexpected early elimination, mean that the defender will not play any minutes in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Surely it is an extreme disappointment for the defender, who was considered to be a cornerstone for Marcelo Bielsa’s team. But it’s also a disappointment for FC Barcelona, who were hoping that he would have improved his current standing in world football by playing a good tournament. Currently, there are two scenarios: one, where he stays with Barcelona, and another where he leaves. In scenario one, Barcelona were hoping that a good World Cup would have helped him bounce back after some disappointing seasons in which he lost his starting place. And in scenario two, it would have raised his market value after it took a tumble during those aforementioned seasons. With Pau Cubarsí emerging as Barcelona’s top center-back, and Gerard Martín gaining as the other starter, there may not be a starting position open for the Uruguayan. It’s been reported that Barcelona will respect Araujo’s decision whether he wants to stay, and potentially not be a starter, or look for a move elsewhere. But if he stays, he won’t even be necessarily guaranteed to be the third choice with Eric Garcia available and Andreas Christensen returning from injury. Now, Araujo’s challenge – if he does not leave Barça – is to return from injury, brush aside the disappointment of Uruguay’s untimely elimination, and convince Hansi Flick he should play more minutes.

‘He’s a game changer’ – Marcelo Bielsa talks trying to stop Lamine Yamal and Spain
ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JUNE 21: Lamine Yamal #19 of Spain celebrates scoring his team's first goal during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match between Spain and Saudi Arabia at Atlanta Stadium on June 21, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Patrick Smith - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images) | FIFA via Getty Images Uruguay boss Marcelo Bielsa admits his team face a tough test at World Cup 2026 later today when they come up against Lamine Yamal and Spain. La Roja are one of the favorites for victory at the tournament, with Yamal having scored his first World Cup goal on his first start last time out against Saudi Arabia. Bielsa was asked about Yamal and his plans to face Spain ahead of the game. “He’s a game-changer. There will be arguments with the player who regularly faces him over position on the field. There will be help from the Uruguayan players to overshadow him because he’s a game-changer and a decisive player,” he told reporters. “Do what we always do. Against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde we had ups and downs; what I want is for the team to be dynamic, to take the lead, and for us to be able to do so against a superior opponent to the previous two. “Spain’s style of play is based on teamwork. Creating plays is a priority in all aspects of their game, so defending will be crucial and won’t be easy. One of the best ways to defend is to limit the opponent’s possession, and we’ll try to do just that.” Uruguay’s preparations for the game have been marred by talk of unrest in the camp, with claims players are unhappy with Bielsa’s tactics and intense training sessions.

Barcelona star Pedri at risk of missing Round of 32 at World Cup 2026 due to suspension
ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JUNE 21: Pedri #20 of Spain inspects the pitch before the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match between Spain and Saudi Arabia at Atlanta Stadium on June 21, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Patrick Smith - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images) | FIFA via Getty Images Spain are currently preparing for their final group game of World Cup 2026 against Uruguay and will be hoping to top the group going into the Round of 32. The match against Uruguay promises to be a tough affair and Barcelona star Pedri will have to be very careful. Pedri has already picked up one yellow card in the tournament, against Cape Verde in Spain’s opener, and a second at this stage will bring about an automatic one-match ban. Any player receiving two yellow cards across their team’s first three matches can be suspended for the first match of the knockout round. Yellow cards will then be reset after the group stages and again after the quarter-final stage. Luis de la Fuente could decide to rest Pedri for the match, although that seems unlikely given his importance to the team. Spain are currently top of Group H and, as things stand, could face Austria in the Round of 32.

‘It’s a compliment’ – Xavi Espart happy with Philipp Lahm comparisons at Barcelona
VALENCIA, SPAIN - MAY 23: Xavi Espart of FC Barcelona looks on during the LaLiga EA Sports match between Valencia CF and FC Barcelona at Estadi de Mestalla on May 23, 2026 in Valencia, Spain. (Photo by Aitor Alcalde Colomer/Getty Images) | Getty Images Barcelona defender Xavi Espart says he was pretty flattered to be compared to Germany legend Philipp Lahm earlier in the season by manager Hansi Flick. The German coach talked up Espart back in March and then went on to hand the youngster his first-team debut in the Champions League against Newcastle. Espart has been asked about his campaign and what he thought about Flick’s words. “It was so quick that he barely had time to give me two very clear messages: to trust myself and play with confidence,” he told AS. “Obviously, I really appreciate such a comparison; he’s a fantastic footballer, it’s a compliment. “[My debut] was crazy, it all happened so fast. I was warming up and when I had to go on, I wasn’t expecting it at all, and suddenly I was on the pitch. It was just seven minutes, but I lived them at full speed. “It was a dream come true. I’ve been at Barça since I was very young, and to make my debut like that, in a crucial Champions League match, was incredible. Gordon was around there, although I didn’t have to mark him!” Espart is now with Spain’s Under-19s for the Euros where he plays a slightly different role but admits he doesn’t mind where he plays. “I enjoy both. I’ve taken on both roles,” he added. “With Spain I play as a midfielder and at Barça I play as a full-back, but since it’s such a dominant team, I feel like just another player in the middle and I’m very comfortable.” Spain kick off their campaign against Wales and then face Germany and Denmark in the group phase.

Vampeta made the claim in a podcast which was swiftly rejected by Raphinha’s cousin. Natalia Rodrigues has now had her say and made it pretty clear that money is really not a problem for the family. “Honestly, I think it’s absurd that I have to talk about my financial life. If we were earning just 10% of what Raphinha earns right now, we’d already be incredibly blessed,” she todl Daily do Garotinho. “I see no need to expose this on my social media, because I’m fully aware of the social reality we live in. If I made a post saying: ‘Look, I’m not poor, I’m still rich,’ they’d call me classless. “I thought the story would die down, but these rumors have already reached Spain, and everyone thinks we’re struggling.” Raphinha, meanwhile, is currently focusing on trying to recover from injury in time to feature again for Brazil at World Cup 2026.

‘The worst mistake’ – Spain boss sends warning about comparing Lamine Yamal to Lionel Messi
ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JUNE 15: Lamine Yamal of Spain looks on during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match between Spain and Cabo Verde at Atlanta Stadium on June 15, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Marvin Ibo Guengoer - GES Sportfoto/Getty Images) | Getty Images Spain boss Luis de la Fuente says that ongoing comparisons between Lamine Yamal and Lionel Messi are a “mistake” and do not help the Barcelona teenager. Yamal has had to cope with such comparisons throughout his career but has always tried to make it clear that he’s his own player. De la Fuente says that Yamal simply has to follow his own path but accepts that Yamal is “different” from other players. “The worst mistake would be to compare him to Messi and Maradona. He is the midst of a process. He has exceptional footballing maturity and lives it all with total naturalness,” he told reporters. “He has great serenity and strength. We have to let him follow his path but those players who have something different are ready for that. They’re geniuses, like Dalí [who] can paint a picture, or Michelangelo. “They’re different. What is exceptional to us, isn’t to them. In those extremes, they feel comfortable. Why? Because they are different. What we think is exceptional, they consider normal.” De la Fuente also says that Yamal needs careful support and guidance due to the constant focus and media attention he has to cope with. “We should help him as best we can on this journey: that would be good for Spanish football and the Spanish national team. Those of us who are parents know that you accompany [your children], guide them, but without invading their space,” he added. “I am a coach but I am also someone who forms people. When you’re so young, when you’re 18, you still need advice. You can’t talk to them like you do to Jesús Navas. He is intelligent and accepts it. He protects himself from the media, as he should.” Spain and Yamal are in action again later today against Saudi Arabia at World Cup 2026.

World Cup 2026: USA’s ‘high IQ’ squad backed to handle hype; Casemiro heading for Miami; Sweden’s Dutch test– live
⚽ All the latest news from day nine of the tournament ⚽ Player guide | Bracketology | Golden Boot | Email us On this day in World Cup Euros history: 1976 – Antonin Panenka won the final for Czechoslovakia with the most famous penalty of all time. And 50 years on, he sat down with Gavin Newsham for a good long chat: Antonin Panenka laughs like a bear might, a low rumble, suggesting mischief among the memories. He is sat in an office at Bohemians football club in Prague, recounting the story of his impudent, revolutionary penalty that not only won the 1976 European Championship for Czechoslovakia against West Germany but soured his relationship with the goalkeeper his spot-kick humiliated, Sepp Maier. “He went 35 years without uttering a single word to me,” he smiles. But the feud went much deeper. “I read some articles that he even had a shooting target in his garage with my face on it that he used to fire darts at. We get on well enough now though.” I’m not a fan of the hydration breaks that have been introduced at this World Cup, but they’re here for now and it is fascinating from a coaching perspective because the momentum has swung straight after several hydration breaks. That could suggest coach involvement has helped teams to tweak things. Turning the game into four quarters – it felt inevitable it was going to head in that direction, and I hope it doesn’t carry on going in that direction. I don’t like it, but let me also be clear – when it’s hot, you really need it, for health and safety. So put yourself in Fifa’s shoes. If you only have drinks breaks in the hot cities you could be accused of giving certain teams an advantage with a chance for a tactical discussion over, say, a team playing in Seattle, where it’s cooler. Imagine turning around and saying: “We’ll only have VAR in some of the stadiums, not all.” You’re either going to have it or you’re not going to have it. Continue reading...

Barça open to selling Ronald Araujo if good offer arrives
Ronald Araujo of Uruguay arrives before the group H match between Saudi Arabia and Uruguay at the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Miami Stadium, Miami, the United States, June 15, 2026. (Photo by Xu Zijian/Xinhua via Getty Images) FC Barcelona are not in a rush to sell defender Ronald Araujo, but they will do so if a good enough offer comes, per a new report. The Uruguayan has said he wants to continue at Camp Nou, where he has built his career. Araujo is currently on the sidelines but hopes to make his FIFA World Cup debut soon after an injury kept him out of the first game. Araujo moved from Uruguay to play for Barcelona B, where he made an impression and ultimately rose to become a fixture of the first team. His stock has taken a hit lately, however, due to lack of discipline in big matches which have led to costly red cards. It is said the Catalans hope that he will have a good World Cup, in part to lift his spirits, but also because it could tempt high bids. It’s not that Barcelona are pushing him out the door, but with Pau Cubarsí and Gerard Martín preferred in the center of defense, they may see Araujo as surplus to requirements. Still, Araujo’s quality is appreciated, and the player does not want to leave. Taken these two factors into consideration, it won’t be just any offer that pries him away from Catalonia.

‘We feel responsible’ – Marcelo Bielsa takes blame for Ronald Araujo’s injury at World Cup 2026

Ronald Araujo #4 of Uruguay poses for a portrait during the official FIFA World Cup 2026 portrait session on June 10, 2026 in Cancun, Mexico. (Photo by Michael Regan - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images) | FIFA via Getty Images Uruguay boss Marcelo Bielsa says he feels responsible for an injury sustained by Ronald Araujo before the start of World Cup 2026. The defender arrived with a small issue which became worse and led to him returning to Barca for treatment amid claims the Catalans weren’t happy with how Uruguay handled the situation. Araujo’s brother also hit out at Uruguay over the injury, and Bielsa says they must accept the blame. “Araujo arrived with a muscle problem which wasn’t serious. He had no serious muscle problems in the last six months at Barcelona. He also suffered a muscle tear,” he told reporters. “My conclusion is the same. If the player gets injured in training, something is wrong. But Araujo works with a group he trusts a lot and no decisions were made without reaching a consensus with them and Araujo himself. “We feel responsible, but we couldn’t have done anything differently.” Uruguay are set to kick off their World Cup tournament against Saudi Arabia later on today.

Yamal is potentially set to return from injury in the game, although it’s still not clear if he will have minutes or be held in reserve by Luis de la Fuente. Ferran has been asked about his team-mate and says he’s in great shape currently. “He’s doing very well, I think he’s practically at 100%, which is a joy. He’s a very important player for us,” he told La Vanguardia. Torres was then asked if Spain could be careful with Yamal and hold him back, replying: “We shouldn’t hold him back. He’s 18 years old and has tons of energy. We have to let him flow, which is one of his strengths.” The decision on whether Yamal starts, plays or is held in reserve is now down to De la Fuente. CHATTANOOGA, UNITED STATES - JUNE 11: Pau Cubarsi of Spain Gavi of Spain during the Training Spain at the The Baylor School on June 11, 2026 in Chattanooga United States (Photo by Pablo Garcia/Soccrates/Getty Images) | Getty Images Spain boss Luis de la Fuente has once again showered Barcelona star Gavi with praise ahead of the start of his team’s World Cup campaign. Gavi’s been in the news ahead of the tournament for a tough tackle on Rodri in training. However, Rodri has played down the incident, while De la Fuente has insisted “this is football.” The Spain boss has now spoken about Gavi’s impact in training and explained why he is such a vital part of his squad. “I wish you could have seen how he’s training. He’s so enthusiastic… There’s an important aspect, aside from the footballing side and the players’ fitness, that’s motivation,” he told AS.A “And motivation can sometimes turn any situation around. Sometimes it’s positive, and when you’re feeling down, it can be negative. But Gavi is a very important player because he has fantastic energy. “He demands a lot from the rest of his teammates. He demands a lot because he trains with such energy, vitality, and enthusiasm… And that’s contagious. “It’s a spirit that defines and shapes the identity of this group. There are players who are constantly pushing themselves. And that’s very good for the team because they never stop striving to improve.” Gavi returned to fitness at the end of the season and played his way into Spain’s squad for World Cup 2026. He’ll be hoping he can make a real impact at the tournament but may have to settle for a place on the bench for their first game against Cape Verde.

‘We were very worried’ – Spain boss feared Lamine Yamal would miss World Cup 2026
CHATTANOOGA, UNITED STATES - JUNE 11: Lamine Yamal of Spain during the Training Spain at the The Baylor School on June 11, 2026 in Chattanooga United States (Photo by Pablo Garcia/Soccrates/Getty Images) | Getty Images Spain boss Luis de la Fuente has admitted the national team feared Lamine Yamal would miss World Cup 2026 after sustaining a hamstring injury that saw him miss the end of Barcelona’s season. Yamal is yet to make his competitive return from injury but is with the Spain squad for the tournament after working hard to recover. De la Fuente has been asked about the teenager and said that he feared the worst initially. “We were very worried. Because we saw it was an injury that could… Not keep him out for three months, or even two, but that month and a half could certainly be extended,” he told AS. “But the timelines we’re seeing are exceptional, both in terms of the prediction and the quality of his recovery. And we’re all… not surprised, but very happy. “Very happy because we’re seeing that the recovery is progressing faster, he’s feeling better every day. And that leads us to believe that he’ll be perfectly fit for the first match.” Spain’s opening game of World Cup 2026 is against Cape Verde on Monday. De la Fuente has said that Yamal will be fit for the game but is “not ready to play 90 minutes.”

(Photo by David Ramos/Getty Images) | Getty Images Spain midfielder Rodri has revealed just how laser focused Lamine Yamal is on the World Cup ahead of La Roja’s opening game against Cape Verde on Monday. Yamal is closing in on a return from injury and is expected to be fit for the match. Rodri says the teenager is relishing the challenge ahead of him and is ready to give the tournament his all. “He’s very excited and happy, I see him eager,” he told El Larguero. “The other day he told me he wasn’t going to the team lunch because he had to prepare for the World Cup. I don’t know if he was joking or not. “He’s doing well. I see him motivated and eager. In fact, he didn’t go to the lunch because he’s focused.” Rodri also says he has no worries about Yamal’s fitness as he works his way back from a hamstring injury. “With Lamine’s age, I think he’ll recover from his injuries in no time and he’s in great shape,” he added. “Well, Nico is different, because Nico has been a bit more hampered throughout the year, but I see Lamine as perfectly fine.” Yamal is currently expected to be on the bench for Spain’s game against Cape Verde but could potentially see some game time as a second-half substitute.

(Photo by Juan Manuel Serrano Arce/Getty Images) | Getty Images Spain midfielder Rodri has been quizzed on the tackle by Gavi in training that went viral on social media this week and brought plenty of scrutiny on the Barcelona midfielder. Luis de la Fuente has already leapt to Gavi’s defence, making it clear there was no need for the midfielder to apologize as “this is football, it’s training.” Indeed the Spain boss even explained “I want this Gavi” in response to some of the criticism and Rodri has now shared his thoughts. “We know Gavi is impetuous, but it stays on the field and that’s it. He has no filter, he doesn’t care,” he told El Larguero. “We really like his personality, although we do try to tell him that training sessions are less intense than matches. I didn’t know they were recording, but I sh*t myself completely!” The Spain team are currently focused on an opening World Cup group game against Cape Verde on Monday night in Atlanta.

Barcelona star Lamine Yamal is thinking about Lionel Messi ahead of World Cup 2026
(COMBO) This combination of file pictures created on November 14, 2025, shows Spain's forward #19 Lamine Yamal (L) walking onto the pitch prior to the UEFA Nations League semi-final football match between Spain and France in Stuttgart, southwestern Germany, on June 5, 2025, and Argentina's forward #10 Lionel Messi looking on during the 2026 FIFA World Cup South American qualifiers football match between Argentina and Colombia at the Mas Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires on June 10, 2025. The Finalissima between Lionel Messi's Argentina and Lamine Yamal's Spain will be played in March on neutral ground, said CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez on November 20, 2025, in Asuncion, speaking to AFP and a Paraguayan media outlet. (Photo by Luis ROBAYO and Franck FIFE / AFP via Getty Images) | AFP via Getty Images Lamine Yamal seems to have Lionel Messi on his mind as he heads into World Cup 2026 with the Spain national team. The Barcelona wonderkid has uploaded a series of photos to Instagram and one in particular is making waves on social media. Yamal has posted a picture which shows two football shirts together, one seems to be the Argentina No 10 which belongs to Messi and the other looks to be Yamal’s own No. 19 for Spain. The teenager has long had to put up to comparisons with Messi but has always made it clear that he wants to forge his own path in the world. “For me, Messi is the greatest football player in history,” he said. “He is a legend and I do not find myself worthy of being compared to him. I do not want to be Messi and he knows it. I want to follow my own path.” Yet Yamal’s incredible talent means that he’s seen by many as the player who will succeed Messi as the greatest in the game when the GOAT finally hangs up his boots.

Introducing Barca Blaugranes’ World Cup 2026 Coverage
Photo by Daniel Cardenas/Anadolu via Getty Images The biggest tournament in sports kicks off tomorrow in North America as World Cup 2026 gets underway with Mexico taking on South Africa in Mexico City to start a five-week journey that will end with a champion crowned in New York/New Jersey on July 19. And even though Barca Blaugranes is focused primarily on FC Barcelona — and we will continue to bring every important news item involving the Catalan club over the next five weeks — we will dedicate an important portion of our coverage to the tournament as well. We have decided, at least during the group stage, to dedicate the bulk of our coverage to three nations: Spain, Argentina, and Brazil. La Roja have the largest Barça contingent and the most beloved Blaugrana players in Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Gavi, and Co. We will give Spain the same treatment we give Barça: look out for detailed match previews, live threads, match recaps and post-match coverage the same way you’re used to seeing here during the season. Argentina don’t have a current Barça player, but they have the biggest legend of them all in the GOAT: Lionel Messi will play his final World Cup looking to defend his 2022 crown, so he deserves our focus as well. There will be live threads and match recaps in the group stage, and an even bigger coverage if the Albiceleste advance deep into the tournament again. Raphinha is Brazil’s only Barça representative but he gets a lot of attention from our readers, and because yours truly is Brazilian and will be fully focused on the Seleção anyway, Brazil’s matches will also get the live thread, match recap treatment. What about the others? Don’t worry. Frenkie de Jong’s Netherlands, Jules Kounde’s France, Ronald Araujo’s Uruguay, Anthony Gordon and Marcus Rashford’s England, João Cancelo’s Portugal and Hamza Abdelkarim’s Egypt will also get our attention but at a smaller scale, but every important contribution from those players will be covered both in our main site and also in The Feed, which will be very active during the World Cup with highlights, reactions and more. Our coverage will naturally evolve during the tournament depending on the activity and response from our readers and commenters, so what’s outlined above is our initial plan that will get adjusted accordingly. We encourage you to remain as active as usual on our articles, threads and Feed posts, and continue to make BB the best Barça community around — including in the World Cup. Enjoy the party!

(Photo by Nicolò Campo/LightRocket via Getty Images) | LightRocket via Getty Images Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo has spoken out about his current injury after sustaining a problem on international duty with Uruguay. Araujo’s brother has been critical of the situation and posted “Thanks for injuring players” on social media amid news the defender was flying back to Barcelona for treatment. Barcelona are also reportedly unhappy with Araujo’s injury, as they knew he had a minor issue when he linked up with the squad. The Barcelona star has now had his say on the situation. “I have a minor calf injury, and it happened during training. I don’t think it was due to the intensity of the training sessions because we have it very well controlled, but all the ghosts of the last World Cup came flooding back,” he said, per Infobae. “I couldn’t say if I’ll be ready for the first match. I can’t guarantee it. But I’m going to give it my all to play in this World Cup.” Araujo also said that his brother’s social media post should not have happened. “I found out when I arrived back in Spain. It’s his mistake, it really is a mistake,” he added. “I spoke with him about it, and I’ll speak with him again when I get home. These are things that shouldn’t happen.” Uruguay’s first game of World Cup 2026 is on Monday against Saudi Arabia.

(Photo by Chris Ricco/Getty Images) | Getty Images Ronald Araujo has sustained an injury ahead of World Cup 2026 with Uruguay which has led to criticism from the player’s brother and frustration at Barcelona. Mikael Araujo posted on Instagram “Thanks for injuring players just days before the World Cup!” in a pointed message to the national team, while Barcelona are also unhappy at the situation, per Sport 890. The defender arrived for international duty with a known calf issue and Barcelona warned the national team that he should train separately to avoid any problems. However, it seems that Araujo ended up doing double sessions with the rest of this team-mates which made the injury worse. Araujo did decide to stop and then jetted back quickly to Barcelona for treatment. Barcelona are said to be baffled as to why Araujo was not handled with more care, while the player’s decision to go back to Barca for treatment is said to be because he’s lost confidence with Uruguay’s medical staff. Araujo is now a doubt for Uruguay’s World Cup opener but the hope is will be able to feature in the other games against Cape Verde and Spain.

(Photo by Aitor Alcalde Colomer/Getty Images) | Getty Images Barcelona midfielder Gavi has admitted he was full of nerves before Luis de la Fuente announced his Spain squad for World Cup 2026 as he wasn’t convinced he would make the cut. Gavi returned from a serious knee injury at the back end of the season for Barcelona but did enough to secure a spot in La Roja’s squad. Lamine Yamal showed Gavi’s joyful reaction to being called up on social media and the midfielder admitted he felt a “rush of happiness.” “The truth is that I was quite nervous, I didn’t want to see the call-up,” he told the media. “Lamine told me to watch it with him there and we saw it together with the physios and when I heard my name it was a rush of happiness. Representing Spain in the World Cup is one of the greatest things there is. Going to my second World Cup is a source of pride.” Gavi also spoke about when he found out he was going to be out for much longer than he had expected after his knee operation. “After the operation the doctor told me that I was going to be there for four or five months,” he added. “Even the doctor had to leave because I was going to explode. Football is the best there is, but I know there are injuries that can easily end your career. I’ve always had that ambition in my head. “I was clear that if I came back very well from the injury and gave the level I have given in the important games, I was sure that I would come.” Gavi featured for Spain a warm-up against Iraq on Thursday and will be hoping for more minutes on Tuesday against Peru.

Barca’s players are then likely to return at different times, depending on how far they progress at the tournament this summer.

Hansi Flick to hand exciting La Masia striker Oscar Gistau pre-season chance at Barcelona
NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 18: Oscar Gistau of FC Barcelona celebrates scoring his team's third goal during the UEFA Youth League between Newcastle United FC and FC Barcelona at Whitley Park on September 18, 2025 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. (Photo by Stu Forster/Getty Images) | Getty Images Oscar Gistau has long been tipped to make the breakthrough at Barcelona and will be handed the chance to impress Hansi Flick during pre-season. According to Diario Sport, the 18-year-old will join Hamza Abdelkarim and Ebrima Tunkara for the start of pre-season with the first team and will be given the chance to show Hansi Flick what he can do. La Masia has struggled to produce quality strikers but it’s hoped Gistau can buck that trend. Injuries have disrupted his progress in recent seasons, and the hope is that he can now stay fit and progress. Barcelona’s pre-season is due to start while the World Cup is still in progress, giving Flick a great opportunity to look at some of the club’s younger players. Gistau has already been pencilled in to play a big role for Barcelona Atletic next season, along with Abdelkarim, and the club clearly have high hopes for the teenager.

Bernal isn’t part of Spain’s World Cup 2026 squad but is part of the training camp and was praised by his manager before the game. De la Fuente then spoke again about Bernal afterwards and made it clear he’s in his future plans. “Marc has continued to demonstrate his quality. Very young and with a lot of personality, he has the vision for that important position for us, number 6,” he told reporters. “He has many things to improve, like so many young players. But with his potential, he has enormous room for improvement. He can be a very important player in the future.” The Spain boss also spoke about the game itself and was happy with the run-out for his players. “We aimed to focus more on conditioning and physical conditioning, to help the players adapt. It was a day to assess their form and give other players a chance,” he added. “There were no injuries. Now we’re entering a more demanding and intense phase, with players who will contribute. Tomorrow we’re in the United States, and that puts our focus squarely on the game.” The team are now due to jet out across the Atlantic for the tournament but will take on Peru next in a friendly before their first group game against Cape Verde.

(Photo by Harry Murphy - UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images) | UEFA via Getty Images Barcelona starlet Ebrima Tunkara has been impressing at the Under-17s Euros for Spain, scoring once and bagging four assists for his team so far. He’s also being watched by some big names, according to AS. Scouts from Manchester United, City and Juventus have all been present to watch the youngster in action. Tunkara is widely regarded as one of the hottest prospects in Barcelona’s academy and the club have already shown their commitment to the midfielder. Barca confirmed in January they had secured Tunkara’s immediate future with an agreement that came into effect on his 16th birthday back in March. Barcelona boss Hansi Flick is also expected to include Tunkara on the club pre-season tour and give him a taste of first-team action. Tunkara is still only 16 but has already played for Barca Atletic and been described by manager Juliano Belletti as a “special” talent. It’s therefore no real surprise to see clubs interested as he looks to have a very bright future ahead of him. Spain and Tunkara are in action later today at the Under-17s Euros when they play Italy for a place in the final.

There are still plenty of Barcelona players in action with Eric Garcia, Ferran Torres, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Joan Garcia and Pau Cubarsi all called up. Marc Bernal, who is not in the World Cup squad but is training with the team in Spain, has also been given the nod and could potentially make his senior debut. De la Fuente did talk up the Barcelona youngster ahead of the game at his pre-match press conference. “When you’re with them, that’s when you really see a footballer’s potential,” he said. “Marc has had a fantastic season; he has a brilliant future if he keeps working like this. If he continues on this path, he can go far. We are extremely pleased.” The match kicks off at 9pm local time at the Estadio de Riazor.

La Liga 2025-26 awards: the best players, team … and smelliest shirt of the season
It was another season to remember for Lamine Yamal and Barcelona, along with Getafe, Rayo and one naughty fan Lamine Yamal wore the crown and flew the flag. With the last kick of the opening game of 2025-26, Barcelona’s new No 10 – the teenager handed the shirt Ladislao Kubala, Luis Suárez, Diego Maradona, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi once wore, the kid Spain coach, Luis de la Fuente, had claimed was “touched by God’s wand” and had been anointed by Him too – scored against Mallorca. It was his first goal as an adult and he celebrated by conducting his own coronation. La Liga’s title race had begun. The day after it had been run, nine months on, as Barcelona’s bus made its way through the streets, from the top deck of the victory parade Lamine Yamal held a Palestine flag. “This is something I don’t normally like but I spoke to him and if he wants to it’s his decision,” Hansi Flick said. “He’s old enough: he’s 18.” Coming of age in the public eye wasn’t easy – isn’t easy – and the season hadn’t been either. There had been injuries and, Lamine Yamal later admitted, an “internal abyss”, but he had his third league title. Flick, the father figure whose own dad died on the morning they won the league and chose to share that with his other “family”, had his second. Have you ever felt so much love, the coach was asked. “No, never,” he said. Continue reading...

Anger at Katie McCabe’s move to Chelsea is forgivable – crossing line into abuse is not | Suzanne Wrack
While small pool of talent and elite clubs in women’s game makes switches between rivals inevitable, this move is contentious. But some reaction has gone too far The red neon lights flicker in the dark for a moment, then the room is blue, and there is Katie McCabe, a grin on her face and a Chelsea shirt on, her controversial switch across London complete after 11 years with Arsenal. The reaction has varied dramatically. At times it has been hilarious, with witty comments and memes abundant. There has been valid rage too, an intense rivalry having developed between the two sides as Chelsea swept up domestic honour after domestic honour and sought to eclipse Arsenal’s reputation as the most successful club in women’s football in England (in the modern era at least). I often talk about timing, and these are situations that life throws at you. It seems it wasn’t his time because of this injury. But he’ll have another chance to show what a footballer he is,” he told Mundo Deportivo. “We’re going to miss him a lot because, in addition to what he brought to the team on the pitch, he was also a person I liked very much: so much energy, so much joy, a very beloved member of the group. “We’re going to miss him terribly, but his time will come, and he’ll have his chance, as I told him the other day when I had the opportunity to speak with him.” Lopez will now be focused on his recovery and ensuring he’s ready for the start of next season with Barcelona.

‘Ready for the first match’ – Spain boss says Lamine Yamal will be in ‘perfect shape’ for World Cup 2026
MADRID, SPAIN - MAY 31: Lamine Yamal of Spain looks on during a training session at Ciudad del Futbol de Las Rozas on May 31, 2026 in Madrid, Spain. (Photo by Luciano Lima/Getty Images) | Getty Images Spain boss Luis de la Fuente says he expects Lamine Yamal to be in “perfect shape” for World Cup 2026 and believes he will be ready for their first game against Cape Verde on June 15th. Yamal missed the end of the season with a hamstring injury and there’s been speculation he won’t be risked in Spain’s early group games this summer. De la Fuente has offered an update on the youngster after he joined up with the squad for the World Cup and is in confident mood. “First of all, we believe he’ll arrive in good condition. We’re in constant communication with the clubs, who keep us updated on his progress daily,” he told Mundo Deportivo. “We know he’ll be in perfect shape, and I’d even venture to say he’ll be ready for the first match, but we’ll continue to monitor his progress.” The Spain boss also spoke about how Yamal can prepare for his first ever appearance at a World Cup. “He simply needs to be aware of what he has in his hands, his feet, and his heart. And show the world the kind of footballer he is. “He needs to remain consistent, keep improving, keep working harder and taking better care of himself, even though he already does. “But the demands of the highest level will require even more from him, and he’s ready to do it. We’ll give him the space he needs, the information he requires, and we’ll support him through all the challenges ahead.” Spain play two friendlies before the start of the World Cup. La Roja take on Iraq on Thursday and then head to Mexico for a final warm-up game against Peru.

Champions League team of the season: Lamine Yamal, Harry Kane … and a Spurs player
To better highlight the whole field among Europe’s elite, we chose an XI that couldn’t feature more than one player from any one team This year we are picking a team of the season with a difference: I am allowed only one player per team. Of course, as finalists Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal have players with claims to all of these positions, so apologies to Willian Pacho and Declan Rice, among others. But what this format does allow for is an overall view of the Champions League season that was. *** Continue reading...

(Photo by Vince Mignott/DeFodi Images/DeFodi via Getty Images) | DeFodi Images via Getty Images Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly cooled interest in Julian Alvarez amid continued speculation about the Atletico star’s future. Barcelona, PSG and Arsenal have all been linked with summer moves for the Argentina international, with Hansi Flick’s side having made Alvarez their top target. According to L’Equipe, PSG held discussions about trying to bring in Alvarez but “but his indecisiveness deterred them.” The French daily goes on to say: “Luis Enrique and Campos are quite clear on the matter: if a player doesn’t show a strong desire to join the French capital, they will move on.” There’s been speculation already that Alvarez has told PSG and Arsenal that if he does leave Atletico this summer then it will be for Barcelona. The Catalans giants are reported to have made an initial offer for Alvarez of €100 million, although Los Colchoneros have denied receiving an offer and have made their anger at the ongoing speculation very clear.

‘One of the best in the world’ – Spain boss Luis de la Fuente explains decision to call up Gavi and Eric Garcia to World Cup squad
KOBE, JAPAN - JULY 27: FC Barcelona's Eric Garcia (R) is congratulated by Gavi (C) after scoring a goal during the preseason friendly between Vissel Kobe and FC Barcelona at Noevir Stadium Kobe on July 27, 2025 in Kobe, Hyogo, Japan. (Photo by Paul Miller/Getty Images) | Getty Images Spain boss Luis de la Fuente has explained his decision to call up Gavi and Eric Garcia to his World Cup squad for this summer’s tournament. Gavi gets the nod after returning from a serious injury, while Eric has been rewarded for an outstanding season with Hansi Flick’s side. The duo are part of a squad containing eight Barcelona players, and De la Fuente spoke about why he called up the two players after announcing his list. “I don’t know if there are eight or how many from Barça. They’re national team players, I don’t care where they play. I was really upset about Gavi’s injury,” he told a press conference. “He’s the team’s plaything, and I don’t need to tell you anything about his footballing ability. He’s very versatile. He’s one of the best players in the world. “Eric was with me in the youth teams and at the Olympics. He’s joining this group and will be just another member. He hasn’t come before because the circumstances weren’t right. “I want to talk about why Eric and Pubill are coming. They’ve performed very well this season. I have to make decisions, and we felt it was the right time. That’s why we made this decision. I already said I was going to look at players who haven’t been with us.” Gavi was typically emotional at hearing news of his call-up, something De la Fuente loved to see. “I’m going to start crying too. That shows the human quality of this group. That’s just as important as the purely footballing aspects,” he added.
