‘One of the best in the world’ – Spain boss Luis de la Fuente explains decision to call up Gavi and Eric Garcia to World Cup squad
KOBE, JAPAN - JULY 27: FC Barcelona's Eric Garcia (R) is congratulated by Gavi (C) after scoring a goal during the preseason friendly between Vissel Kobe and FC Barcelona at Noevir Stadium Kobe on July 27, 2025 in Kobe, Hyogo, Japan. (Photo by Paul Miller/Getty Images) | Getty Images Spain boss Luis de la Fuente has explained his decision to call up Gavi and Eric Garcia to his World Cup squad for this summer’s tournament. Gavi gets the nod after returning from a serious injury, while Eric has been rewarded for an outstanding season with Hansi Flick’s side. The duo are part of a squad containing eight Barcelona players, and De la Fuente spoke about why he called up the two players after announcing his list. “I don’t know if there are eight or how many from Barça. They’re national team players, I don’t care where they play. I was really upset about Gavi’s injury,” he told a press conference. “He’s the team’s plaything, and I don’t need to tell you anything about his footballing ability. He’s very versatile. He’s one of the best players in the world. “Eric was with me in the youth teams and at the Olympics. He’s joining this group and will be just another member. He hasn’t come before because the circumstances weren’t right. “I want to talk about why Eric and Pubill are coming. They’ve performed very well this season. I have to make decisions, and we felt it was the right time. That’s why we made this decision. I already said I was going to look at players who haven’t been with us.” Gavi was typically emotional at hearing news of his call-up, something De la Fuente loved to see. “I’m going to start crying too. That shows the human quality of this group. That’s just as important as the purely footballing aspects,” he added.

(Photo by Manu Reino/DeFodi Images/DeFodi via Getty Images) | DeFodi Images via Getty Images Hansi Flick has revealed that Barcelona are having to be careful with Jules Kounde in the final weeks of the season. Kounde didn’t train on Friday ahead of Barca’s final game against Valencia and also sat out El Clasico recently. Flick was asked about the situation with the defender and offered an update. “He will play in the World Cup and now he has some problems, so we are careful with him,” he told reporters. “For everyone it is a great goal to play in the World Cup and he has not trained for that. We take care of it and handle it well; he does treatment and works on it. He’s evolving well.” Kounde may well get a breather for the trip to Valencia on Saturday as Flick has other options such as Eric Garcia, Ronald Araujo and young Xavi Espart. The defender has already been named in Didier Deschamps’ France squad for World Cup 2026.

Hansi Flick pays classy tribute to ‘best coach in the world’ Pep Guardiola
Photo by CHANDAN KHANNA/AFP via Getty Images There was some massive news in the football world on Friday as Manchester City announced that Pep Guardiola will be departing the club after 10 very successful years, and the Barcelona legend was given a beautiful tribute by the current Blaugrana coach. Hansi Flick was asked about Pep’s departure at a press conference on Friday and was full of praise for Guardiola’s time at Man City. “Ten years… I don’t think you’ll see me here. At 70, I don’t think this is the place to be. What Guardiola has done, ten years at a club at that level, is an incredible feat; it’s unbelievable what he’s accomplished. “I’ve always said he’s the best coach in the world, and he’s proven it every single year over the last ten years. Even when things haven’t gone well, he’s always known how to handle it. His role has been fantastic. “When we talk about philosophy, his teams always play at the highest level and he always finds a way to be better than other teams. And if you look at the titles he’s won, it’s exceptional.” Great stuff from Hansi. Pep transformed English football and regardless of how much money he had available to craft whatever team he wanted, Guardiola’s Man City was always a joy to watch and won a whole lot of trophies in the process. We likely won’t see Pep back at Barça as a coach again, but we can still enjoy him elsewhere whenever he decides to take another job.

Three goalkeepers and a surprise? Luis de la Fuente drops hints on Spain squad for World Cup 2026
MADRID, SPAIN - MAY 12: Luis de la Fuente, head coach of Spain, during the Desayunos Deportivos Europa Press with Luis de la Fuente at Camilo Jose Cela University on May 12, 2026 in Madrid, Spain. (Photo By Oscar J. Barroso/Europa Press via Getty Images) | Europa Press via Getty Images Spain boss Luis de la Fuente is preparing to announce his squad for World Cup 2026 and has dropped a few hints ahead of Monday’s big reveal. Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia is hoping to join a host of his club-mates in the squad, with De la Fuente saying he already knows which goalkeeper will be his No. 1. “Yes, yes. I’d even tell you the starting lineup. There will be three goalkeepers, not four,” he said in an interview with Mario Suarez. The Spain boss also hinted at potential surprises on Monday when the squad is announced. “The group of players is decided. It’s possible that some players who haven’t been called up before will be included,” he added. Spain will be without Fermin Lopez due to injury, but Gavi will be hoping to get the nod. De la Fuente had some kind words for the midfielder regarding how he’s performed since returning from injury. “We haven’t given him anything. He’s earned it after overcoming two very serious injuries. He’s in great form. When he’s not playing, he’s a player who is missed,” he explained. De la Fuente will call up 26 players for the World Cup, with Spain set to take on Iraq and Peru in friendlies before they kick off their tournament against Cape Verde.
