Vinicius: “I am in no rush to extend my contract with Real Madrid”
Real Madrid attacker Vinicius Junior talked to CazeTV and shared some thoughts about his contract extension. Vinicius’ deal with Los Blancos expires in the summer of 2027, meaning that he will be able to negotiate with other teams next January. “I am not in a rush to renew my contract. I have a contract until 2027. So, until 2027, we have a great deal to discuss with Madrid, and Madrid has a great deal to discuss with us. Real Madrid is calm, and I am calm. The president trusts me, and I trust him. And that’s all there is to it; we just have to wait and live each day, each moment, and enjoy the best club in the world,” said Vinicius. The Brazilian attacker and Real Madrid have not reached an agreement yet, but it could happen after the upcoming FIFA World Cup. “I’ve never pictured myself away from Real Madrid. I thoroughly enjoy every moment I spend here, as it’s the club of my dreams. I always dreamed of playing here and being able to do so for such an extended period. Now, I’m one of the team captains. Despite my youth, it’s a significant occurrence that rarely happens in history. So, I savor every moment. I want to remain here my entire life, but I’m not in a rush to renew my contract,” he added. The two sides will likely resume talks after the tournament and reports on the Spanish press indicate that an agreement should be expected.

COLUMN: The return of Jose Mourinho, the continuation of the Real Madrid cycle
No careful observer of Real Madrid should have been shocked by Jose Mourinho’s return, thirteen years after he left in a storm of acrimony with one La Liga title to his name. On This Day in 2018: Farewell Cristiano
KIEV, UKRAINE - MAY 26: Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid leaves the pitch following the UEFA Champions League Final between Real Madrid and Liverpool at NSC Olimpiyskiy Stadium on May 26, 2018 in Kiev, Ukraine. (Photo by Lukas Schulze - UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images) | UEFA via Getty Images Real Madrid did the unthinkable, the unfathomable, the wildest among the wildest things to imagine when it comes to club football. It didn’t even feel real; it felt like a fallacy – three Champions League titles in a row. But in Kyiv, it was Real Madrid’s reality. Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid did it against Liverpool, with a 3-1 win. Gareth Bale scored two outstanding goals, coming off the bench after Karim Benzema had opened the scoring for Madrid. Sadio Mane’s equaliser had briefly brought Liverpool back in the game, but Gareth Bale stormed in and blew it away from their reach. During the celebrations, Marco Asencio and Isco were joking that it doesn’t feel as good as it should anymore – of course, because they had won it so many times by that time (Isco four, Asencio two). In that moment, only Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo himself knew that the club’s greatest ever marksman had already played the last game for Los Blancos. Cristiano took part in the celebrations at Cibeles the next morning and even promised to meet the fans there next year, but he was already gone. The closest pop culture reference is probably Michael Scott leaving The Office (US) a day early, pretending it’s business as usual. Only Jim Halpert knew what was really going on.

‘I had loser stamped on my head’: how Porto’s Francesco Farioli bounced back
Italian’s reputation was bruised at Ajax but he has turned Porto back into title winners and is one of Europe’s most sought-after coaches again After Francesco Farioli surrendered a nine-point lead in his final five matches at Ajax, he felt the word “loser” had been stamped across his forehead. Clubs that had pursued him quietly stepped back and his rise abruptly stalled. Now, after an impressive campaign at Porto, the 37-year-old is again one of Europe’s most sought-after coaches. Porto’s title triumph, wrapped up with two games to spare, came 12 months after Ajax’s collapse enabled PSV to become Dutch champions. It is a sign of Farioli’s status that he was linked with Chelsea before they appointed Xabi Alonso, raising fears among Porto supporters of an early departure. They remember what happened 15 years ago when André Villas-Boas was prised away to Stamford Bridge after winning the league. Farioli, though, insists the club and fans have nothing to worry about. Enrique Riquelme Calls For Florentino Pérez Debate As Presidential Campaign Intensifies
MADRID, SPAIN - MAY 25: Enrique Riquelme attends the Media during the opening of his new campaign headquarters for his candidacy for the presidency of Real Madrid next to Bernabeu stadium on May 25, 2026, in Madrid, Spain. (Photo By Oscar J. Barroso/Europa Press via Getty Images) | Europa Press via Getty Images Enrique Riquelme continued to ramp up his presidential campaign by directly engaging with Real Madrid socios and supporters while publicly calling on Florentino Pérez to participate in a debate ahead of the upcoming elections. With the club’s Electoral Board still yet to officially confirm the election date — currently expected to be June 7th — Riquelme’s campaign is already operating at full speed. The businessman spent the morning meeting with supporters at El Rincón de Toñín, a traditional gathering place tied to the Capote y Montera supporters’ club, where he listened to concerns from fans and discussed several of the themes shaping his campaign. Among the key issues raised were the Santiago Bernabéu renovation project, the treatment of socios and season ticket holders, ticket accessibility, and what Riquelme views as a growing disconnect between the club and its membership base. Riquelme argued that ordinary socios have increasingly been pushed aside despite the club’s commercial success. “Season ticket holders are privileged, but regular members feel forgotten,” he reportedly explained during the meeting. He specifically questioned the difficulty members face when trying to purchase tickets through the club’s official system, suggesting the process lacks transparency and accessibility. Another recurring topic was the issue of season ticket redistribution. Riquelme criticized the lack of clarity surrounding season tickets that become available after holders are reportedly removed for resale violations, questioning why those spots are not being opened to waiting socios. Much of the attention, however, centered on his demand for a public debate with Florentino Pérez. The current Real Madrid president recently challenged potential opponents to step forward publicly and explain what they had contributed to the club. Riquelme responded directly, insisting that after two decades without a contested election, a debate is necessary. “There has to be a debate,” Riquelme said. “Florentino has been the best president in Real Madrid history, and what we want is to continue building on the legacy he has created while taking the club into the future.” He also claimed Pérez never truly expected a challenger to emerge, pointing to how quickly his own campaign was assembled once elections were announced. Throughout the event, Riquelme leaned heavily into a message centered around listening to socios and restoring stronger communication between the club hierarchy and its membership. Before leaving, he posed for photos with fans and accepted a document containing requests and concerns from a group of members, promising to review the proposals and incorporate them into upcoming campaign announcements.

Real Madrid Set To Bring Back Nico Paz After Breakout Season In Italy
VERONA, ITALY - MAY 10: Nico Paz of Como in action during the Serie A match between Hellas Verona FC and Como 1907 at Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi on May 10, 2026 in Verona, Italy. (Photo by Image Photo Agency/Getty Images) | Getty Images Real Madrid are moving ahead with plans to bring Nico Paz back to the Santiago Bernabéu following the midfielder’s impressive rise in Serie A. The academy graduate is expected to return to Madrid after spending the last two seasons with Italian side Como, with the club preparing to activate the buy-back clause included in his deal. Real Madrid reportedly have a two-week window, beginning this Monday, to finalize the operation. Unlike several other major decisions tied to the club’s long-term sporting project and upcoming presidential election, Nico’s return appears to be straightforward internally. There is broad support within the club for bringing him back, and Florentino Pérez is reportedly able to approve the move without waiting for the election process to conclude. From Madrid’s perspective, the deal represents a major market opportunity. Re-signing Nico would cost the club around €9 million — a figure viewed as extremely favorable considering the growing interest in him across Europe. Reports in Italy have linked Inter Milan with a potential move worth close to €60 million after his standout performances this season. Nico had been waiting to see whether Como could secure Champions League qualification before final decisions were made regarding his future. However, regardless of the outcome, his path now appears set to lead back to the Bernabéu. The Argentine midfielder is expected to be one of the first returning players integrated into Real Madrid’s plans for next season. Another anticipated return is Endrick, whose loan spell away from the club is also coming to an end. Nico’s stock has risen dramatically over the past year. After emerging as one of Serie A’s most highly rated midfielders, he is now also expected to be part of Argentina’s squad for the upcoming World Cup — another sign of just how quickly his profile has grown.

Florentino Pérez Launches Re-Election Campaign Ahead Of Real Madrid Presidential Vote
MADRID, SPAIN - MAY 23: Florentino Perez, President of Real Madrid, during the Spanish League, LaLiga EA Sports, football match played between Real Madrid and Athletic Club at Bernabeu stadium on May 23, 2026, in Madrid, Spain. (Photo By Oscar J. Barroso/Europa Press via Getty Images) | Europa Press via Getty Images Florentino Pérez will officially kick off his campaign for the Real Madrid presidency on Wednesday evening, as the club’s election process begins to take shape ahead of next month’s vote. The current president is set to present his candidacy at 7:00 PM local time at the Meliá Castilla Hotel in Madrid, where he will unveil the slogan for his campaign: “Much history to be made.” The message is aimed at reinforcing Pérez’s vision for the future while reminding socios of the unprecedented success Real Madrid have enjoyed under his leadership. In the lead-up to the announcement, Pérez’s campaign team has already begun promoting his candidacy around the Santiago Bernabéu. A large banner displayed near the stadium highlights the seven Champions League trophies won during his two spells as president — a reminder of the club’s dominance in Europe throughout the modern era. Real Madrid are expected to officially confirm the date of the presidential election later today. Barring any last-minute changes, the vote is currently scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 7th. Pérez will face businessman Enrique Riquelme in the election, with the winner set to lead the club for the next four years. Florentino Perez has served as president across two different eras, first from 2000 to 2006 and again since returning in 2009. During that time, Real Madrid have transformed both financially and competitively, winning multiple Champions League titles while also overseeing the extensive renovation of the Santiago Bernabéu.

Enrique Riquelme officially launches Real Madrid presidential campaign with criticism of Bernabéu renovation and call for debate
Barroso/Europa Press via Getty Images) | Europa Press via Getty Images Enrique Riquelme has officially begun his campaign for the Real Madrid presidency — and he wasted little time making his intentions clear. Speaking at the opening of his campaign headquarters directly across from the Santiago Bernabéu, Riquelme presented himself as a candidate focused on both “legacy and future,” while also delivering pointed criticism toward the current direction of the club under Florentino Pérez. Although he repeatedly emphasized that his campaign is “not against anyone, but in favor of Real Madrid,” several of his comments carried unmistakable jabs at the current administration. One of his first criticisms centered around the way Real Madrid’s history is represented publicly. Referring to banners displayed around the Bernabéu celebrating the club’s European Cups, Riquelme suggested that part of Madrid’s legacy has been overlooked. “We respect the legacy,” he said, “but not only the seven European Cups shown on some banners. There are eight more, and they are also part of Real Madrid’s history.” Riquelme also targeted the renovated Santiago Bernabéu, questioning whether the fan experience justifies the enormous financial investment made into the stadium transformation. “After a €1.7 billion renovation, the seats are smaller and closer together,” he argued. “You have to leave your seat 10 minutes before halftime just to get a drink or a sandwich. Is this really what the renovation was supposed to be?” Throughout his speech, Riquelme repeatedly returned to one central theme: the role of club members, or socios. He argued that ordinary members have gradually become disconnected from the institution despite being the foundation of the club’s identity. “What are the benefits of being a Real Madrid member?” he asked rhetorically. “Beyond the honor of it and a discount on shirts, what do members really receive?” He promised that the cornerstone of his campaign would be a major proposal aimed specifically at improving the experience and influence of socios. According to Riquelme, the project will be unveiled later this week and will represent the largest membership-focused initiative in club history. “This Wednesday we will present the biggest transformational project for Real Madrid members in the club’s 120-year history,” he declared. While many details of his broader sporting vision remain undisclosed, Riquelme insisted that he would not have entered the race without a strong footballing project behind him. “We said during the pre-campaign that we would only run if we had a powerful and exciting sporting project for Real Madrid fans,” he said. “And we do.” Another major talking point from his appearance was his public request for a direct debate with Florentino Pérez. Riquelme argued that Real Madrid needs genuine democratic discussion between competing visions for the club — something he believes has been absent for over two decades. “It has been more than 20 years since Real Madrid had this kind of debate,” he said. “All the requirements have been fulfilled on our side. Now what we ask for is discussion. Debate. As many times as necessary, respectfully and constructively.” Riquelme also referenced Spain’s national team while discussing the current sporting state of the club, noting that Real Madrid’s representation in La Roja has diminished dramatically. “At most, if we are lucky, one Real Madrid player will be called up,” he said. “Meanwhile, our rivals will fill much of the squad.” The comments appeared to tie into his broader message that Madrid must once again become the dominant force not only at club level, but also within Spanish football’s national identity. The campaign launch marks the official beginning of what could become the most public and contested Real Madrid presidential race in years. Whether Riquelme can seriously threaten Florentino Pérez remains to be seen, but his opening day made one thing clear: he intends to challenge the current leadership openly, directly, and publicly.

Jorge Valdano: “Mbappe is not a fraud”
MADRID, SPAIN - MAY 21: The journalist and former footballer Jorge Valdano, during the presentation of the book "366 footballers of all time who have made history", at the Ateneo de Madrid, on 21 May, 2026 in Madrid, Spain. Relaño brings together journalist Iñaki Gabilondo and former coach Jorge Valdano in the literary meeting to unravel the careers, milestones and anecdotes of the players who have transformed the beautiful game worldwide. (Photo By Isa Saiz/Europa Press via Getty Images) | Europa Press via Getty Images Former Real Madrid player and executive Jorge Valdano has come to the defense of Kylian Mbappe, pushing back strongly against the criticism surrounding the French superstar following Madrid’s disappointing campaign. Speaking in an interview with Movistar, Valdano argued that the scrutiny directed at Mbappe has become excessive and ignores both his individual quality and production. “Kylian Mbappe has won a World Cup and was runner-up in another, scoring three goals in the final,” Valdano said. “We are not talking about a fraud, we are talking about perhaps the best player in the world right now.” Mbappe’s second season at Real Madrid has unfolded under immense pressure and expectation. Despite finishing as the team’s top scorer, much of the post-season discourse has centered around Madrid’s collective struggles and Paris Saint-Germain’s resurgence after his departure. Valdano believes the narrative has unfairly turned Mbappe into the symbol of everything that went wrong at the Santiago Bernabéu while simultaneously crediting PSG’s success to his exit. “To place the blame for everything good that happens to Paris Saint-Germain and everything bad that happens to Real Madrid on this man, who is the league’s top scorer, seems like an abuse to me,” Valdano added. Valdano’s defense also comes at a time when comparisons between Real Madrid and PSG have intensified. PSG’s post-Mbappe evolution into a more balanced collective under Luis Enrique has led many to frame Madrid’s season as evidence that the Frenchman’s arrival disrupted the team’s chemistry. Valdano clearly rejects that interpretation.

Real Madrid Basketball fall short in Euroleague Final against Olympiacos
Real Madrid Basketball lost Sunday’s Euroleague Final against Olympiacos 92-85. Los Blancos were severely undermanned after injuries to their three centers Edy Tavares, Alex Len and Usman Garuba, making Olympiacos the heavy favorites as Madrid were forced to play without an interior presence. The Greek team were also playing in front of around 10,000 of their fans, given that the Final Four took place in Panathinaikos’ Arena in Athens, Greece. Real Madrid competed at a very high level throughout the entire game, with notable performances from Mario Hezonja (19 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists) and Trey Lyles (24 points, 8 rebounds). However, some questionable calls by the referees in clutch time proved to be too much for Sergio Scariolo’s team to survive. Madrid guard Andrés Feliz had an opportunity to tie the game from the three-point line with 11 seconds to go but his shot hit the rim, giving Olympiacos their fourth Euroleague title. Real Madrid remain the all-time leader in Euroleague titles with 11 trophies.

An additional year in Italy is not ruled out either, but his buy-back clause has a deadline tied to it – and Real Madrid would rather capitalise on it now. Incoming manager Jose Mourinho will surely have a say on Nico’s future. He did not play in Como’s final game of the season against Cremonese due to caution from an injury. Nico Paz is certain to have a place in Argentina’s 26-man World Cup squad after a stellar season. With consultation with Argentina’s doctors, it was decided that he shouldn’t play on Matchday 38. Lionel Scaloni is reported to announce the squad sometime this week.

Fede Valverde: Club’s First Uruguayan Captain
Federico Valverde central midfield of Real Madrid and Uruguay during the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 League Phase MD3 match between Real Madrid C.F. and Juventus at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on October 22, 2025 in Madrid, Spain. (Photo by Jose Breton/Pics Action/NurPhoto via Getty Images) | NurPhoto via Getty Images On his way out, Dani Carvajal handed the captain’s armband to Fede Valverde in a moment of symbolism. Real Madrid’s captaincy is decided by seniority at the club. Four players are designated as captains in order of their seniority. The order next season, barring any surprising turn of events in the transfer window, will start with Fede Valverde. The 27-year-old midfielder has played 372 games for Real Madrid. He has been under heavy scrutiny since his altercation with Aurélien Tchouaméni. Having served a two-week hiatus, he was called up by Álvaro Arbeloa for the last game of the season. It is important to recognize that Valverde is not the first Uruguayan to simply captain Real Madrid. Club legend José Santamaría played 337 games between 1957 and 1966 and wore the armband on many occasions. However, Fede Valverde is the first Uruguayan to become the designated first captain of the club with the seniority rule in full effect.

The Legacy Dani Carvajal Leaves Behind
MADRID, SPAIN - MAY 23: Supporters of Real Madrid with a huge banner of Daniel Carvajal of Real Madrid prior to the match during the LaLiga EA Sports match between Real Madrid v Athletic de Bilbao at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on May 23, 2026 in Madrid Spain (Photo by M Gracia Jimenez/Soccrates/Getty Images) | Getty Images Real Madrid City in Valdebebas is a serious place. It’s picturesque — every blade of grass on every single training pitch is at the perfect length. Despite the seriousness, there is a sense of serenity within Real Madrid’s training facilities. Youth team players from the men’s and women’s divisions work diligently, with a sense of pride and responsibility, to one day become Dani Carvajal. Six-time UEFA Champions League winner and La Fábrica graduate Dani Carvajal bid farewell to the Bernabéu after a storied career at the club that spanned over 23 years. There is nothing that happened in Valdebebas that hasn’t coincided with his time at the club, except a brief spell away at Bayer Leverkusen. Carvajal started in all six Champions League finals he won. He played in one position for 13 years as a first-team player — a position that lacked consistency at Real Madrid for years before it was time for Carvajal to make it his own. Dani Carvajal was elevated to main first-team captain after the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 as Luka Modrić left the club. He may not have lived up to expectations as a leader, but that will not affect his otherwise perfect career, steeped in pure Madridismo. At his peak, he was a rock at the back, a relentless vessel of ball progression and the provider of some of the most iconic assists in club history. He overcame heart problems, got over an ACL injury, gave up gluten, and just kept coming back, because that’s what Real Madrid does. Carvajal did not forget his former teammates and coaches as he delivered an emotional farewell speech on Saturday evening at the Bernabéu. He was the final custodian of the threepeat. As he bids farewell, Real Madrid truly are now in a new era. He leaves behind a legacy of perseverance; he is the reference for what a kid from La Fábrica can do.

Alvaro Arbeloa cancels his final press conference as Real Madrid coach
MADRID, SPAIN - MAY 23: Alvaro Arbeloa, Head Coach of Real Madrid, looks on prior to the LaLiga EA Sports match between Real Madrid CF and Athletic Club at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on May 23, 2026 in Madrid, Spain. (Photo by Angel Martinez/Getty Images) | Getty Images Alvaro Arbeloa cancelled his final post-match press conference as the head coach of Real Madrid after their 4-2 win over Athletic Club on Saturday. Arbeloa did not speak to the crowd the way Carlo Ancelotti did last season, and had already talked about how he felt being the coach of the team in the pre-game press conference on Friday morning. In that conference, Arbeloa said: “I hope it’s just a ‘see you soon.’ I’ve always considered Madrid my home. I’ve been with Madrid for 20 years; it’s my home. It’s my last game this season; I don’t know if it’s the last of my life as Madrid’s coach—we never know. I’ll try to enjoy it. “I know what the team was like when I arrived. What I’ve had to deal with. If I’d started from the beginning, it would have been different. But that’s what I had to work with, and I tried to do it the best way possible. Not my way, but the best way. We’ve done a lot of things right; I’m happy with what we’ve done.” Seeing the club’s farewell for David Alaba and Dani Carvajal, the coach must have decided that there is no point in having a press conference after the match.

He was asked about how he felt, to which he said: “I feel very grateful, not only for this moment but for these five years. I have grown as a player and as a person, with many successes. Even during injuries, this club has always been there for me and supported me. I feel it in my heart and I am very grateful. Thank you to everyone on the team, the staff, the coaches, the president, and the fans. I can’t express my feelings.” Alaba on the chairs in the stands “It was a special moment when I lifted the chair. Seeing those chairs makes me feel very grateful for that special moment.” Alaba on Real Madrid “It’s a special club, the greatest in the world. I’ve enjoyed these five years here, Real Madrid and the fans will always be in my heart. It’s a special part of my life. I’m very grateful, thank you.” Alaba’s speech, thanking the fans “”I’m very shy. Thank you so much for everything. I’ve enjoyed five years so much because of you all. Thank you for the love and support; we were very successful together. Thank you for being there during a very difficult time in my career with my knee injury. Difficult. Really, thank you for everything. We continue celebrating with a legend and an incredible person… Dani Carvajal! “Thank you for everything.”

Dani Carvajal: “Real Madrid is my life”
MADRID, SPAIN - MAY 23: Daniel Carvajal of Real Madrid is throwing up in the air by his teammates wearing all a shirt with his name on after his final match played for Real Madrid during the LaLiga EA Sports match between Real Madrid v Athletic de Bilbao at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on May 23, 2026 in Madrid Spain (Photo by M Gracia Jimenez/Soccrates/Getty Images) | Getty Images Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal spoke to RMTV and then to the Bernabeu after playing the last match of his illustrious time at the club. He was asked about what the club means to him, to which he said: “It’s not just that it’s the club of my life, it is my life. I was born a Real Madrid fan, I’ve been here for 23 years, I’ve played in every division, I’ve won everything there is to win, I’ve even been captain… I couldn’t ask for more. I’m leaving very happy and fulfilled.” Carvajal on his time at Real Madrid “If someone had told me as a child that I would have this career, I wouldn’t have imagined it. It’s been wonderful, spectacular from the first day to the last. Triumphs, difficult moments that helped me mature, sharing a dressing room with wonderful people… It’s the best club in the world. I always tried to be kind to everyone, even with my frustrations if I lost possession or misplaced a pass. But I hope everyone leaves with good memories of Dani Carvajal. We’ll see each other in the future.” Carvajal on how he feels “It’s very difficult to describe. You get emotional without knowing why. Yesterday, seeing the training ground, today seeing the banner they made for me, the ovations… How could I not be emotional? I’m closing a wonderful chapter, an unforgettable career. I only have words of gratitude for the club and the fans. Thank you, I’ve enjoyed it like a child, from the first day to the last, and I hope the feeling is mutual. I hope to be able to return to what is my home, in a different way, but helping out as always.” Carvajal on the golden era and Florentino Perez “Good evening, Madrid fans. It’s not an easy moment for me to speak because I’m very emotional about this grand farewell. First, I want to thank our president, Don Florentino. He’s the one who brought me back from Germany, and we’ve won many Champions Leagues together, but if I have to highlight one thing, it’s that not even 24 hours after my knee injury, he didn’t hesitate to renew my contract. Then I wanted to thank my teammates. We haven’t had two easy seasons, but I’m sure we’ll win again. This is Real Madrid, and we have to rise again, as our history tells us. I can’t help but remember the golden era. I can’t help but remember this golden era we’ve lived through. We’re bringing a wonderful era to a close: four Champions Leagues in five years, that tenth, three in a row, Cristiano, Ramos, Ancelotti, Zidane… Countless names that have carried this badge to new heights. They made us great and took us to the very top.” Carvajal to his family “I want to continue thanking my parents and my brother for making such a huge effort when I was a child. You have always been there, thank you. Also to my wife, my children… I have lived through two very difficult years, the bitter side of this sport, and you have filled my days with light. I love you all very much.” Carvajal to the fans “Finally, thank you all, you are wonderful. From the first day to the last, you carried me on your shoulders. Seeing this farewell makes me incredibly proud to be a Madridista. Thank you for the Madridista comebacks, for being there in the good times and the bad. Some careers are defined by success, and I only want you to remember me with pride and with the certainty that I gave everything for this shirt. Yesterday, today, and always, Hala Madrid!”

Apparently… We’re in? – Real Madrid Castilla make the 2025/26 third division play-offs
Real Madrid Castilla have officially qualified for the 2025/26 Primera Federación promotion play-offs. At least… they think they have. In one of the most surreal and chaotic final days Spanish football has seen in years, Castilla went from believing they had been eliminated and watching another club celebrate qualification, to eventually being informed that they themselves were actually going to the play-offs after all. Nobody appeared to understand what was happening, whether it be clubs, players, media, fans, and even the RFEF themselves… Yet through all of the chaos, Castilla were granted the lifeline of a lifetime, qualifying in extraordinary circumstances. Castilla’s season looked over. The situation entering the final day was relatively simple on paper after a few weeks of poor form: Castilla needed to better Barakaldo’s result to secure a play-off place. The team travelled to Guadalajara, a team right in the relegation battle, and drew 2-2, after being 2-0 down at one point, in a frustrating match that appeared to end their season. Throughout the afternoon they sat outside the top five in sixth place, behind Barakaldo in the live standings. When both matches reached full-time, nothing suggested otherwise, and the Castilla players were distraught. Real Madrid’s official match report even stated that Castilla had failed to qualify. Revisando las bases de la competición de la @Primera_RFEF en la página web de la @rfef, uno se encuentra lo siguiente. Por lo tanto, sería el Real Madrid Castilla, y no el Pontevedra, el clasificado, pese a la celebración granate. pic.twitter.com/9unCcSZjyx — Jesús Domínguez (@JesuDominguez) May 23, 2026 While Castilla and Barakaldo had both finished, there was still one match continuing elsewhere involving Pontevedra, the final club capable of dramatically altering the standings. Thirteen minutes of added time was played in this game, allowing it to really sneak up one everybody. Pontevedra were 2-0 down and seemingly eliminated themselves. But in a ridiculous twist, they scored twice during that lengthy added period to rescue a draw. Pontevedra, Barakaldo and Castilla all finished level on points, initiating the start of the chaos. The immediate reaction was that Pontevedra had completed a miracle. Their official social media account celebrated qualification for the play-offs. Fans inside the stadium celebrated qualification for the play-offs. Even the official league account posted that Pontevedra had secured the final play-off position. Then the post disappeared. Almost immediately, screenshots of the RFEF rules and regulations began circulating online. Journalists and supporters scrambled to interpret a set of rules that suddenly became the most important document in the world. The wording was not simple. 🔚 FINAL EN PASARÓN 🏟️♥️ SOOOOMOS DE PLAY OFF Pontevedra CF 2-2 Real Avilés Encontro patrocinado por Exalta e Acuña #PontevedraCFRealAvilesInd #PrimeraFederacion | #VersusELearning pic.twitter.com/InlTuUVigT — Pontevedra CF 🦴 (@PontevedraCFSAD) May 23, 2026 The confusion centred around the RFEF’s rules regarding ties involving more than two teams. Rather than using the normal league table, the regulations require the creation of a separate “mini-league” consisting only of the matches played between these tied teams. It states: “A separate classification shall be established between the tied teams, counting only the matches played between them”. Only if teams remain tied after this recalculation does any further criteria apply. Many initially interpreted the standings incorrectly by relying on either the normal table or simplified head-to-head calculations. But once the specific three-team mini-league between Castilla, Barakaldo and Pontevedra was isolated, the standings shifted again. And somehow, Castilla emerged on top. As confusion spread across social media and Spanish media outlets, the situation reportedly reached the point where a single RFEF official was tasked with confirming the final interpretation of the regulations and therefore the final standings. That ruling eventually declared Real Madrid Castilla as the team qualifying for the promotion play-offs. This was absurd. Castilla had already mourned elimination, whilst Pontevedra had already celebrated qualification (and even Barakaldo). The league itself had already publicly stated a different outcome. Yet with this verdict, and bad taste was left in everyone’s mouths. Football rarely produces anything quite like this, as Castilla qualified for the play-offs without actually experiencing the moment of qualification. It seemed, they could have finished as low as 7th, and they ended up being placed in fifth. Apparently, they’re in? 🚨 ¡𝗢𝗙𝗜𝗖𝗜𝗔𝗟! May 23, 2026 Castilla already know their opponents in the play-offs: CE Sabadell. This is a team who enjoyed a fair better season than Castilla in Group B, finishing in second place with 68 points (Castilla finished with 58, in fifth). Still, tonight has proven that in this division, anything is possible…

Ancelotti’s World Cup gamble on Neymar shows Brazil still desperate for own Messi | Jonathan Wilson
Selecting a creaking talent underlines the political demands even the most successful coach in Champions League history cannot escape When Neymar was 18, he made his debut for Brazil as part of the rejuvenation of the national squad after the disappointment of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. At the time, Lionel Messi was 23, obviously a star, and Brazil had to have their equivalent. Neymar has been trying to escape the Argentinian’s shadow ever since. Even the news that Carlo Ancelotti has included Neymar in his squad for the forthcoming World Cup feels like a desperate attempt to create the sort of narrative Messi enjoyed at the last finals: a last dance long after the body had begun to fade. Messi then was 35; Neymar now is 34. But there are not many other similarities between the cases. Continue reading...

The Joy of Six: Mohamed Salah at Liverpool
From Champions League redemption to that stunner against City, we look at half a dozen memorable moments from striker’s Anfield career It was surely the worst moment of Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool career, yet the reaction said everything about his impact on the English game; the respect he had earned in his first season at Anfield. It was not just the Liverpool support who were upset to see Salah so upset, leaving the pitch at Kyiv’s Olimpiyskiy Stadium in tears, utterly inconsolable, having been levered out of the biggest game of his life by Real Madrid’s pantomime villain, Sergio Ramos. It was fans of all stripes. After the season Salah had enjoyed, what he did and how he carried himself, everyone knew he did not deserve this. There was the sense that Salah’s humility as much as his brilliance transcended tribal divides. Continue reading...

Speaking about the interest, he said: “I remember when Jorge Mendes told me: ‘Real Madrid want you.’ It was always my dream to play for Real Madrid. I had offers from other teams. But I told myself: ‘The Real Madrid train would only come once and I am getting on that train.’” James on his relationship with Rafa Benitez “We were just clashing from the start. I didn’t like the way he thought and he didn’t seem to like the way I thought. There was a game I was playing well, he took me off 60th minute and I made a few gestures and the stadium turned against him. He thought I made them turn against him.” James on his relationship with Zinedine Zidane “It was still a beautiful thing to play under him. I trained well, when I played, I scored and got assists but when it was the big games: I wasn’t a starter. I got frustrated and didn’t know what more I could do. He always had his core 12/13 players, he chose them. But I don’t have a personal problem with him. I just wanted to play, but I respect his decision because he backed it up: he won titles.” James on Carlo Ancelotti “Carlo was like a father to me and when someone takes a chance on me… I give them my all.” James on going to Bayern Munich “Nobody knows this… but after Real Madrid: I was going to go to Manchester United and Jorge (Mendes) tells me: ‘Do you want to go to Bayern?’. And I say: ‘Where am I going to play? Ribéry, Robben…’. He tells me: ‘Carlo asked for you’. Carlo calls me and I tell him: ‘I think I’m going to Manchester’. And he responds: ‘Manchester? United is dead. You have to come here with me’.” James on leaving Real Madrid “I got home… sad, I went to cry alone, so my daughter didn’t see me. But she found me and asked why I was crying. I told her we have to leave, I need to change clubs. My heart was broken.”

England’s World Cup squad talking points: from Toney’s return to clarity for Bellingham
Thomas Tuchel has placed great faith in John Stones and Djed Spence while ignoring several star names in attack Thomas Tuchel said that whittling down his 55-player longlist gave him “a certain edge”. There were some tough phone calls and some decisions inevitably caused outrage. But there was a pointed remark from Tuchel about how creating a winning team is not necessarily “to select the most talented 26 players”. The aim since September has been to build a brotherhood; Tuchel knows maintaining harmony within the camp will be crucial given that England hope to be together for seven weeks. “We have 26 players who know their role, who are committed to the idea of team spirit and being unselfish,” the German said. Was there a message to Harry Maguire after the defender aired his grievances at being overlooked? “I think it was not necessary,” Tuchel said of Maguire’s decision to go public. Continue reading...

Álvaro Arbeloa: “I’m leaving, but I hope this is a ‘see you soon’, not a ‘goodbye’”
VALDEBEBAS, SPAIN - MAY 16: Alvaro Arbeloa, head coach of Real Madrid, attends his press conference during the training day of Real Madrid ahead the Spanish League, LaLiga EA Sports, football match against Sevilla FC at Ciudad Deportiva Real Madrid on May 16, 2026, in Madrid, Spain. (Photo By Dennis Agyeman/Europa Press via Getty Images) | Europa Press via Getty Images Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa confirmed that he would be leaving the club after the last game of the La Liga season against Athletic Club, going on to say that, “I hope it’s just a ‘see you soon.’ I’ve always considered Madrid my home. I’ve been with Madrid for 20 years; it’s my home. It’s my last game this season; I don’t know if it’s the last of my life as Madrid’s coach—we never know. I’ll try to enjoy it. And I’m focused on winning.” Arbeloa on Athletic Club “I want to see a great game, say goodbye to the fans, and give them a victory. It’s a huge effort; playing the last home game is special. I want to give the Bernabéu a treat.” Arbeloa on Joan Laporta’s words on Real Madrid and referees “I don’t give much weight to Laporta’s words; we’ve always been very clear about what we’ve said. He’s probably referring to the Negreira Case… We’re still waiting for a resolution to such a serious case that has tarnished Spanish football. Many referees from that era are still around; we still have the same feeling. These aren’t normal things. We have to keep speaking out against it. A Madrid player is bleeding, and that referee gets the honor of officiating the Copa del Rey final.” Arbeloa on his future “I’m not here to talk about possibilities. Mou has a fantastic coaching staff; he’s surrounded by great people. If he comes, he’ll bring his own team, as he should. There’s no chance I’ll be joining him. I’ve spent the last four months thinking about Madrid; from now on, it’s time to think about myself. I’ve taken the leap, and I feel ready for new challenges.” Arbeloa on Dani Carvajal “He’s a symbol of what a Madrid player should be. He laid the first stone at Valdebebas; he’s special, one of a kind. It’ll be a beautiful day for everyone—paying him tribute. He’ll start the game, and I’m sure that when he’s substituted for the tribute, everyone will stand up. When he looks back, he’ll be very proud of what he’s done. We Madridistas have been very lucky.” Arbeloa on Vinícius’ absence “He has been granted leave by the club for a personal matter; we don’t know if he’ll be able to be here tomorrow.” Arbeloa on the best full-backs in Real Madrid’s history “I’d definitely put Carvajal at the top. Dani has been able to dominate in both aspects—going forward and defending. He’s a natural competitor; he’s faced the best.” Arbeloa on his relationship with the players “I’m very grateful to them for what we’ve been through. I’m aware that with 25 different people you can’t have the same relationship. We’ve had our differences; that’s normal. We’ve resolved them in the best way possible. We’ve shown each other respect; the opportunity came when it came. For me, what’s always important is how you handle it, whatever happens to you. And I’ve handled it the best way possible, thinking about Madrid. I’ve thought more about Madrid than about myself these past few months, but I’ve done what’s best for the club. At another club it would have been different, but this was what I had to do. There’s no room for regret.” Arbeloa on his legacy “I know what the team was like when I arrived. What I’ve had to deal with. If I’d started from the beginning, it would have been different. But that’s what I had to work with, and I tried to do it the best way possible. Not my way, but the best way. We’ve done a lot of things right; I’m happy with what we’ve done.” Arbeloa on the locker room “I’m leaving with a great relationship with almost everyone.” Arbeloa on elections “There are some things I can’t get involved in. I think it’s great that they’re running; they know where the bar is set. We’ll be listening and seeing what ideas they can bring to the table.” Arbeloa on whether the club decided his future “I’ve done what I believed in, not because I was forced to.” Arbeloa on conversations with the players “Almost all of them have helped me grow as a coach and as a person. I’ve had a relationship with everyone, I’ve had conversations; sometimes we’ve agreed, other times we haven’t. I’m lucky that I’ve been where they are; I’ve been through those situations, I understand them. Often, their perspective is different from that of a coach. It’s easier for me to put myself in their shoes than it is for them to put themselves in mine. I’m leaving with a great deal of gratitude; they’ve made me better, they’ve made me enjoy every day. I’m very grateful to the club for the opportunity; I’m leaving with gratitude after these eight years, leaving behind many friends. Hopefully one day I can return.”

Alexander-Arnold out of England’s list for the World Cup -report
Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to miss the upcoming FIFA World Cup as the right-back will not make Thomas Tuchel’s squad list for the tournament, according to a report from The Athletic’s David Ornstein. Although the official list hasn’t come out yet, Ornstein is always very reliable and has reported Tuchel’s final squad, with Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham included on it. It has been a rough season for Alexander-Arnold and him missing a few squad lists made sense during the winter. However, he’s stayed healthy lately and has played at a decent level, so it’s safe to assume that he’s just not on Tuchel’s plans because of his playing style. The English defender will surely try to have a bounce-back year for Real Madrid next season to prove his doubters wrong.

What José Mourinho’s transfer policy during his first stint at Real Madrid may tell us about potential player signings this summer.
When José Mourinho arrived at Valdebebas in the summer of 2010, part of the foundation of the Real Madrid team that would go on to win four Champions Leagues in five seasons was already in place. Sergio Ramos, Pepe and Marcelo had been starters at Madrid for several seasons. Madrid’s legendary transfer window that brought Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Kaká, Xabi Alonso and Álvaro Arbeloa to the club preceded the Portuguese manager by one year. But that is not to minimize the work and important pieces Mourinho added to the Madrid squad. The Portuguese manager spent an aggregate €187.5 million on player signings and loans over his three years at the club — an average of €62.5 million per season. That was the seventh most in Europe over those three seasons, but considerably less than the amount spent by Manchester City (€336.6M), Chelsea (€327.7M) or PSG (€267.1M) during that period. Remember that the then €101 million record signing of Gareth Bale occurred in the summer after Mourinho left the club. According to Transfermarkt data, no Mourinho signing at Madrid reached €40 million, with the biggest signings in the Mourinho Madrid era being Luka Modric for €35 million in 2012, Ángel Di María for €33 million in 2010 and Fábio Coentrão for €30 million in 2011 — the former two becoming two of the best signings in club history. The Portuguese manager showed a special affinity for players from the Bundesliga and Premier League during his first stint at Madrid, signing four players from the German league (Mesut Özil, Sami Khedira, Nuri Sahin and Hamit Altintop) as well as four players from the English top division (Ricardo Carvalho, Emmanuel Adebayor, Luka Modric and Michael Essien), albeit two (Essien and Adebayor) were players received on loan. Curiously, Mourinho never signed a player from the Serie A during his 3-year tenure at the club despite having arrived from Inter Milan. A look back at Mourinho’s first stint at Madrid reveals he used his first transfer window at the club to sign players to provide depth across all of Madrid’s lines, adding two young wingers (Di María and Pedro León), two precocious attacking midfielders (Özil and Sergio Canales) and one young defensive midfielder (Khedira). All five were under 24 years of age when they were signed. Mourinho added to that mix one veteran centre-back (Carvalho) that he had previously managed at Porto and Chelsea. Four of the six aforementioned players became frequent names in Mourinho’s 11 during his first season at the club, with Carvalho, Özil and Di María all logging over 3,500 minutes their first season and Khedira surpassing the 3,000-minute mark. The Portuguese manager also added a forward (Adebayor) on loan in the winter transfer window to compensate for Gonzalo Higuaín’s unavailability due to a back injury. Mourinho’s second summer with Madrid saw him further strengthen the backline by bringing on Fabio Coentrão and an 18-year-old Raphaël Varane who would go on to become one of Europe’s best centre-backs. Then in his third season he closed a signing for which Madridistas will be eternally grateful, the incorporation of Modric from Tottenham days before turning 27. The Croatian maestro would go on to become the player with most trophies in club history and arguably the greatest midfielder in football history. There are rumours circulating that the Portuguese coach would like to bring on a player from the Portuguese Liga, Danish defensive midfielder Morten Hjulmand from Sporting. The 26-year-old Hjulmand arrived in Portugal from Serie A in 2023 and has played nearly 4000 minutes at Sporting this season, including over 900 minutes in Champions League. Hjulmand typically plays in a double pivot system alongside another defensive midfielder. Hjulmand is averaging 65 passes per 90 minutes in the Portuguese liga with 91% accuracy and is a demonstrated ball winner as documented by his 165 ball recoveries in league play this season, over 6.3 per 90 minutes. With Madrid needing to strengthen its backline due to recurring injuries to Eder Militão and the departures of David Alaba, Dani Carvajal and possibly Antonio Rüdiger, don’t be surprised to see Mourinho reach out to someone from his past as he previously did with Carvalho to incorporate a seasoned centre-back to pair with Dean Huijsen. One possibility that has been floated is signing Nicolás Otamendi, the 38-year-old whose contract with Benfica ends in June, as a short-term solution. However age may be a deterrent to signing the Argentine as Carvalho was only 32 when he joined Madrid in 2010. Madrid fans will want to pay special attention to this summer’s World Cup standouts for possible club signings as both Özil and Khedira were signed in the summer of 2010 following stellar World Cup performances in South Africa with Germany; and James Rodríguez joined in 2014 following his sensational World Cup in Brazil. Could a spectacular performance in this summer’s World Cup by Elliot Anderson or Adam Wharton lead to Madrid opening up its coffers for either English midfielder? Time will tell, but if Mourinho’s past at Madrid tells us anything is that he is more likely to focus on players with less name recognition, but that are a more complementary fit to the current foundation. Rest assured that Mourinho is already analyzing the pieces needed to return Madrid to European glory.

Real Madrid Continue Preparations for Athletic Club Clash
MADRID, SPAIN - MAY 21: Jude Bellingham player of Real Madrid is training at Ciudad Real Madrid on May 21, 2026 in Madrid, Spain. (Photo by David S. Bustamante/Real Madrid via Getty Images) | Real Madrid via Getty Images Real Madrid completed another training session at Valdebebas on Thursday morning as they continued preparing for Saturday’s La Liga finale against Athletic Club at the Santiago Bernabéu. With the season set to conclude this weekend, the session featured a mix of positive returns and continued absences for Alvaro Arbeloa’s squad. The workout began indoors with strength and conditioning exercises before moving onto the pitch, where the players worked through rondos, possession drills, and small-sided matches. One of the players who returned for Real Madrid was Fede Valverde, who is back in training after missing the team’s last three league games due to a knock suffered from his scuffle with Aurelien Thouameni. The Uruguayan is expected to be available for Saturday’s match and could slot back into the starting lineup for the final game of the campaign. Dani Carvajal also trained normally with the group. The veteran full-back is expected to start against Athletic Club in what will be an emotional farewell appearance at the Bernabéu. The club is preparing a tribute for Carvajal, who recently confirmed that he will leave Real Madrid at the end of the season after a legendary career in white. However, Madrid were still without several key players in today’s training. Aurélien Tchouaméni remained indoors due to muscle discomfort and is increasingly unlikely to feature this weekend. Vinicius Jr. was absent from training with the club’s permission for personal reasons, and there is also uncertainty surrounding his availability for the match. The Brazilian forward could instead begin his break early before linking up with Carlo Ancelotti and the Brazilian national team. Trent Alexander-Arnold also missed the session due to a viral infection. Meanwhile, Ferland Mendy, Éder Militão, and Rodrygo continued their respective recovery programs away from the group as they work toward full fitness. Real Madrid will close out their La Liga campaign on Saturday night against an Athletic Club side led by Ernesto Valverde, who will also be managing his final match for the Basque club.

Real Madrid Roundup: Valdano Calls for Dressing Room Revolution, Tebas Talks Elections, Pedro León Retires
MADRID, SPAIN - MAY 31: Real Madrid's new coach Jose Mourinho (L) and Jorge Valdano, general director of Real Madrid, pose during a press conference at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on May 31, 2010 in Madrid, Spain. (Photo by Angel Martinez/Getty Images) | Getty Images Real Madrid-related news was relatively quiet today outside of the major headlines, but there were still a handful of notable comments and developments worth rounding up. Former Real Madrid general manager Jorge Valdano made headlines during the launch of Alfredo Relaño’s new book 366 footballers, where he reflected on the club’s current situation and the potential return of José Mourinho in some capacity around the club. Valdano cautioned against viewing Mourinho as a miracle solution to Real Madrid’s problems: “Mourinho won’t be the one to solve all of Real Madrid’s problems. Players will have to be signed in key positions. There even needs to be a leadership revolution within the dressing room, given what we’ve seen.” Valdano has historically complicated relationship with Mourinho during the Portuguese manager’s first stint at the club. Beyond the Mourinho angle, Valdano’s point is that Real Madrid’s upcoming summer is not just about tactical tweaks, but about resetting leadership dynamics inside the squad after a back-to-back underwhelming campaigns. Meanwhile, La Liga president Javier Tebas also spoke publicly today during an appearance at Loyola University in Córdoba alongside Córdoba CEO Antonio Fernández Monterrubio. Tebas touched on several topics related to Real Madrid, including the club’s presidential structure and its ongoing complaints about television revenue distribution. Regarding the possibility of presidential elections at the club, Tebas said: “I believe that if there are elections at Real Madrid, that’s fine, and if not, it means no one has been able to offer an alternative to the current president.” He later added: “Whether Real Madrid needs a generational change in the presidency is something that its members will have to decide.” Tebas also pushed back against Real Madrid’s long-standing argument that Spanish clubs are economically disadvantaged compared to Premier League sides: “Real Madrid believes that it should earn more from television rights because it says that it cannot compete with the Premier League clubs, when that is not the case.” Elsewhere, former Real Madrid midfielder Pedro León officially announced his retirement from professional football. The 39-year-old enjoyed a long career that included spells with Murcia, Getafe, Eibar, and a brief period at Real Madrid during the Mourinho era. Pedro León reflected emotionally on his career and roots in Murcia: “Thank you for your love and affection in good times and bad. I have tried to represent, to the best of my ability, that Murcia-supporting boy from Mula who went to see them at the stadium every Sunday.” Finally, Athletic Club manager Ernesto Valverde spoke ahead of what will be his final match in charge of the Basque club — fittingly against Real Madrid this weekend. Valverde reflected on reaching 504 matches as Athletic manager: “Sometimes I ask myself how I’ve managed to reach this number; you just keep pushing.” He also admitted that stepping away from coaching will likely hit him emotionally once the season begins again: “When you’ve spent your whole life doing something, and with the intensity that all coaches have, of course you’re going to miss it.”

Spain Referees Union files formal complaint against Real Madrid
Spain’s Referees’ Union has filed formal complaints against Real Madrid, president Florentino Pérez and the club’s official television network, accusing them of waging a systematic campaign of harassment that endangers officials. According to AESAF, the relentless, critical coverage broadcast by Real Madrid TV, combined with aggressive public statements from Pérez, has crossed the line from sporting critique into systemic intimidation. The union warns that the club’s media strategy is creating a toxic atmosphere that could ultimately incite real-world hostility or physical violence against match officials. “The continuous broadcast of content that systematically questions and discredits the refereeing collective deteriorates the climate of respect necessary for sports to take place,” the union said in a statement. AESAF added that its legal action was aimed at protecting “the dignity, integrity, and safety” of Spanish referees so they can work in an environment free of targeted hostility. For over a year, Real Madrid TV has drawn fierce criticism from rival teams and league officials for broadcasting highly produced, critical videos dissecting the alleged past errors of referees assigned to upcoming Real Madrid matches. While Real Madrid has historically maintained that it is merely exercising its right to free speech and highlighting legitimate flaws in Spanish officiating, the referees’ union is now signaling that it will no longer tolerate the pressure.

Haaland’s Norway to Ronaldo’s swansong: Who are the most likely first-time World Cup winners?
Eight nations have won the World Cup. An expanded field and a grueling schedule means a new champion could emerge from the pack this summer When Fifa expanded the field for the 2026 World Cup to 48 teams, the sales pitch included giving more nations a chance at glory. In reality, the favorites are nearly always former champions. To date, only eight nations have won the men’s World Cup. And yet, few of the former champions arrive at this summer’s tournament in their finest form. Spain are a justifiably popular pick as the reigning European champions have plenty of world-class talent. Argentina will hope to defend their title from 2022 after following it up with the Copa América in 2024. France, who top our power rankings, have reached the last two finals, and Kylian Mbappé claims this squad is the best he has been a part of. Continue reading...

Mourinho’s Real Madrid Staff Taking Shape Ahead of Bernabéu Return — Report

(Photo by Valter Gouveia/NurPhoto via Getty Images) | NurPhoto via Getty Images According to a report from AS, José Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid is beginning to take clearer shape behind the scenes, with the Portuguese manager reportedly finalizing the majority of his coaching staff ahead of his arrival at Valdebebas. The report states that Mourinho will bring several trusted collaborators with him from Benfica, including assistants João Tralhão and Pedro Machado, who currently serve on Benfica’s coaching staff. Both figures are considered among Mourinho’s closest tactical confidants and are expected to play central roles in his new setup at Madrid. AS also reports that analyst Roberto Merella will join the project. Merella has worked closely with Mourinho for several years, dating back to their time together at Roma. Meanwhile, António Dias is expected to take over as fitness coach, while Nuno Santos is lined up to become the club’s new goalkeeping coach. Those appointments could have important implications for Antonio Pintus and Luis Llopis, two respected members of Madrid’s current technical structure. While neither is necessarily expected to leave the club outright, their exact responsibilities under Mourinho remain unclear. The coaching reshuffle will also include departures. AS says Ricardo Formosinho and Ricardo Rocha will not continue as part of Mourinho’s new staff at Real Madrid, although their next destinations have not yet emerged. One notable detail from the report is Mourinho’s desire to add a senior assistant from within Real Madrid itself. The idea would mirror the role Aitor Karanka occupied during Mourinho’s first spell at the Bernabéu — someone familiar with the club structure who can help bridge the gap between the coaching staff and the institution. While Tralhão and Machado are expected to be Mourinho’s primary assistants on matchdays, AS describes Mourinho’s internal working dynamic as far less hierarchical than many might assume. Behind closed doors, the environment is reportedly highly collaborative, with every staff member encouraged to contribute ideas before Mourinho makes the final decision. The majority of the incoming group already has significant experience working together. Tralhão, Machado, and Dias all worked alongside Mourinho during his stint at Fenerbahçe before following him to Benfica. Merella joined Mourinho’s circle during their time at Roma, while Nuno Santos has crossed paths with the Portuguese coach at several clubs, including Tottenham, Roma, and Benfica. Despite bringing many trusted figures with him, Mourinho is also expected to retain much of Real Madrid’s existing day-to-day infrastructure, particularly within the medical and physiotherapy departments. As things stand, Mourinho’s reported staff setup would look something like this: João Tralhão — Assistant coach Pedro Machado — Assistant coach António Dias — Fitness coach Roberto Merella — Analyst Nuno Santos — Goalkeeping coach One additional internal assistant — Still undecided

Real Madrid vs Athletic Club Preview: Farewell Night at the Bernabéu
MADRID, SPAIN - MAY 24: Alvaro Arbeloa (L) and Dani Carvajal of Real Madrid lifts the Champions League trophy during the UEFA Champions League Final between Real Madrid and Atletico de Madrid at Estadio da Luz on May 24, 2014 in Lisbon, Portugal. (Photo by Helios de la Rubia/Real Madrid via Getty Images) | Real Madrid via Getty Images There is no title race left to decide. No European qualification battle. No desperate survival fight. And yet, Saturday night at the Santiago Bernabéu carries emotional weight that exceeds the standings. Real Madrid host Athletic Club in what is expected to be Álvaro Arbeloa’s final match in charge before José Mourinho’s anticipated return to the dugout, while Dani Carvajal is also set to say goodbye to the Bernabéu after an era-defining career in white. For Athletic, it closes Ernesto Valverde’s third spell at the club before Edin Terzić arrives this summer. In another season, this fixture might have been loaded with consequences. Instead, it arrives as a reflective ending for two clubs who entered the campaign with high ambitions and leave it wondering what went wrong. A season that fizzled out Madrid’s faint title hopes officially died after the recent 2-0 Clasico defeat earlier this month. That loss ended any mathematical chance of silverware and confirmed what has been an underwhelming season both on and off the pitch. Still, Los Blancos have finished with some professionalism. Consecutive wins over Real Oviedo and Sevilla mean they have now won three of their last four league games, and there is a chance to close the season on a respectable note in front of their home supporters. The issue has not been results alone. It has been the lack of cohesion. Madrid have rarely looked fluid in attack, and even recent victories have felt more functional than convincing. Their last three wins have all come by either 1-0 or 2-0 scorelines, reflecting a team that can still control games without ever truly overwhelming opponents. Athletic’s decline has also been sharp. After finishing fourth with 70 points last season, Los Leones are heading for a disappointing mid-table finish with just 45 points. A 1-1 draw against Celta Vigo last weekend officially ended their European hopes, and they enter the Bernabéu with only four points collected from their previous five matches. Valverde’s side have struggled badly against elite opposition all season, losing all five matches against top-three teams while scoring just once in those encounters. Injury concerns continue for Athletic Athletic’s preparation for the Bernabéu has been dominated by injuries. Oihan Sancet and Unai Gómez both trained separately at Lezama this week. Sancet continues to recover from a hamstring issue and has returned to high-intensity ball work, while Gómez was limited to individual running sessions after being substituted at halftime against Celta. Nico Williams remains the major absentee concern. The winger stayed inside the gym to manage his own hamstring problem, with Spain manager Luis de la Fuente closely monitoring his recovery ahead of the upcoming World Cup squad announcement. Without Nico’s explosiveness, Athletic lose almost all of their transitional threat. That matters against a Madrid side who controlled the reverse fixture comfortably earlier this season, winning 3-0 while limiting Athletic to just 0.84 expected goals. There was at least one positive development for Valverde: Dani Vivian returned to training and should be available for selection. Meanwhile, Saturday will also carry historic significance for Iñaki Williams, who is set to make his 510th official appearance for Athletic Club — drawing level with Andoni Iraola as the sixth-highest appearance maker in club history. Williams has scored 115 goals for Athletic and remains one of the defining figures of the modern era at the club. Tactical expectations: slow tempo, low margins Everything points toward a controlled, low-scoring contest. Recent Madrid matches have consistently followed that pattern. All of their previous eight league games have finished with three or fewer total goals, while only one of those fixtures produced more than one first-half goal. Athletic’s recent games have been even slower starters. Their last six matches have all featured one or fewer goals before halftime. That makes sense stylistically. Neither side has much incentive to open the game up recklessly, and Athletic — especially without Nico Williams — are unlikely to press aggressively or take major attacking risks early on. Madrid’s scoring trends also support the expectation of a gradual game. Only 42% of their league goals this season have come in the first half, while most of their attacking breakthroughs have arrived after the interval. Still, Arbeloa’s side should possess enough quality to edge the contest. Kylian Mbappé and Fede Valverde are both fit again, and Madrid are expected to field one of their strongest lineups on paper in weeks. Probable lineups Real Madrid Courtois; Fran Garcia, Huijsen, Rudiger, Carvajal; Valverde, Tchouameni; Vinicius Jr., Bellingham, Brahim Diaz; Mbappé Athletic Club Unai Simon; Boiro, Laporte, Yeray, Gorosabel; Ruiz de Galarreta, Jauregizar; Berenguer, Navarro, Iñaki Williams; Guruzeta One final Bernabéu goodbye More than anything, this feels like a farewell night. For Arbeloa, it is the end of a difficult interim spell in impossible circumstances. For Carvajal, it is the final appearance. The Bernabéu crowd will almost certainly create an emotional atmosphere, and Madrid should have enough talent to give supporters a winning sendoff. But if this season has taught us anything, it is that this Real Madrid side rarely makes things easy — or particularly entertaining. Prediction Real Madrid 2-0 Athletic Club A controlled, emotionally charged final home game in which Madrid’s superior individual quality eventually makes the difference, even if the overall performance once again leaves room for improvement.

The Daily Merengue is a place where you can feel free to d all things football. Do not be alarmed by the overt RMCF bias. It’s in the name! Shoutout to the mods who do a fantastic job, Ezek, Valyrian Steel, Kung_Fu_Zizou, Juninho, NeRObutBlanco and yours truly, Felipejack. Two Valverdes? French journalist Pablo Gayicho wrote: “The general feeling about Valverde within the team is astonishment because he has two faces, one he presents to the media by portraying himself as the loyal player who works for the team, and another during training and through his behavior within the team group..” It was expected of a big player alongside legends like Kroos and Modrić and Benzema to possess leadership qualities, whereas what emerged was a player who shows arrogance in his dealings with the young players and also the technical staff—one of the many examples was his problems with members of Xabi Alonso’s staff, and at times he would not listen to their instructions (he considers himself a better player and not in need of guidance from the Spanish coach’s staff).. In addition to this, his mockery of a number of his teammates within the group and his arrogant treatment of the team’s youth, while he is supposed to be a leader..” “This is why reports emerged saying that many people within Real Madrid are not surprised by what happened in the end with Tchouaméni, because his style had been the subject of widespread criticism throughout the year and the season..” Release clause — paid SkySport stated Real Madrid already paid the €3M release clause Mourinho had over his contract with Benfica. Now, he’d be free to sign his new contract. From the games between Benfica and Real Madrid this season, Mourinho identified several weakness in the squad, considering some positions have many players, while others positions lack proper competition. L’ Equipe reports that Real Madrid would have agreed to give Mourinho full power in transfers. This is really hard to believe, and the report even said this never happened under Florentino Perez. Curiously, we also hear from Cortegana that the club is working on extending Rudiger’s contract: En mi opinión, es un error, y estas decisiones solo se están tomando porque no quieren gastar dinero en fichajes. Es el primer indicio de que los fichajes de este verano se reducirán al mínimo indispensable. https://t.co/7P93Yozzq9 — Don Amancio (@DonShelby__) May 19, 2026 Let’s all remember what Mourinho said when he coached us for the first time about forwards who don’t press/defend: If you want to press high, but your forwards don’t press, you can’t press high. If you want to lower the block and defend more near your own goal, but your forward don’t drop, you don’t have a block. This means that, without forwards who work well defensively, you as a team can’t defend well. At the same time, a team without forwards who are decisive offensively is difficult to win something. Without forwards that score a high average of goals, especially in important games, those who don’t hide, it’s very difficult to win important things. 🔙 JOSÉ MOURINHO: “Si quieres presionar alto y tus delanteros no presionan, no puedes presionar alto.

Mourinho requests Real Madrid’s acquisition of Morten Hjulmand -report
Soon-to-be Real Madrid coach José Mourinho has requested the signing of Sporting Lisbon midfielder Morten Hjulmand, according to a report from COPE’s Miguel Ángel Díaz. The Danish midfielder could leave his club for a fee of around €50 million, per that same report. Hjulmand will turn 27 years old this summer, so his signing wouldn’t fit the transfer policy Real Madrid have implement over the last few years. Still, he’s a defensive midfielder with a solid ability to distribute the ball, something Mourinho would like to address in the upcoming transfer window, according to several reports published in the Spanish press. Real Madrid will likely sign a pure midfielder this summer, with other players like Manchester City’s Rodri Hernández reportedly on the club’s radar.

Mourinho’s two-year deal will include an automatic one-year extension if he wins La Liga -report
José Mourinho’s future two-year contract with Real Madrid will feature an automatic one-year extension if the Portuguese manager wins La Liga, according to a report published on AS. Real Madrid is prepared to pay a buyout clause of up to €6 million to release the Portuguese manager from his current contract with Benfica. The announcement will not be made official until Florentino Pérez is re-elected as Real Madrid president, something which could take a few weeks if Enrique Riquelme confirms his candidacy. Mourinho has requested stability and time from Florentino Pérez to develop his project, aiming to shield himself from early dismissal rumors like those that plagued Xabi Alonso earlier in the season. Mourinho’s return marks an attempt from the club to restore order and leadership to a locker room that has recently suffered from internal friction, a lack of clear leadership and poor performances from big stars like Kylian Mbappé, Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham or Fede Valverde.
