Vinicius Junior issues update amid contract uncertainty – “Real Madrid have to talk to me”
One of the big issues that Real Madrid most resolve over the course of the next few months is Vinicius Junior’s contract. Vinicius: “I am in no rush to extend my contract with Real Madrid”
Real Madrid attacker Vinicius Junior talked to CazeTV and shared some thoughts about his contract extension. Vinicius’ deal with Los Blancos expires in the summer of 2027, meaning that he will be able to negotiate with other teams next January. “I am not in a rush to renew my contract. I have a contract until 2027. So, until 2027, we have a great deal to discuss with Madrid, and Madrid has a great deal to discuss with us. Real Madrid is calm, and I am calm. The president trusts me, and I trust him. And that’s all there is to it; we just have to wait and live each day, each moment, and enjoy the best club in the world,” said Vinicius. The Brazilian attacker and Real Madrid have not reached an agreement yet, but it could happen after the upcoming FIFA World Cup. “I’ve never pictured myself away from Real Madrid. I thoroughly enjoy every moment I spend here, as it’s the club of my dreams. I always dreamed of playing here and being able to do so for such an extended period. Now, I’m one of the team captains. Despite my youth, it’s a significant occurrence that rarely happens in history. So, I savor every moment. I want to remain here my entire life, but I’m not in a rush to renew my contract,” he added. The two sides will likely resume talks after the tournament and reports on the Spanish press indicate that an agreement should be expected.

‘I had loser stamped on my head’: how Porto’s Francesco Farioli bounced back
Italian’s reputation was bruised at Ajax but he has turned Porto back into title winners and is one of Europe’s most sought-after coaches again After Francesco Farioli surrendered a nine-point lead in his final five matches at Ajax, he felt the word “loser” had been stamped across his forehead. Clubs that had pursued him quietly stepped back and his rise abruptly stalled. Now, after an impressive campaign at Porto, the 37-year-old is again one of Europe’s most sought-after coaches. Porto’s title triumph, wrapped up with two games to spare, came 12 months after Ajax’s collapse enabled PSV to become Dutch champions. It is a sign of Farioli’s status that he was linked with Chelsea before they appointed Xabi Alonso, raising fears among Porto supporters of an early departure. They remember what happened 15 years ago when André Villas-Boas was prised away to Stamford Bridge after winning the league. Farioli, though, insists the club and fans have nothing to worry about. Real Madrid Set To Bring Back Nico Paz After Breakout Season In Italy
VERONA, ITALY - MAY 10: Nico Paz of Como in action during the Serie A match between Hellas Verona FC and Como 1907 at Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi on May 10, 2026 in Verona, Italy. (Photo by Image Photo Agency/Getty Images) | Getty Images Real Madrid are moving ahead with plans to bring Nico Paz back to the Santiago Bernabéu following the midfielder’s impressive rise in Serie A. The academy graduate is expected to return to Madrid after spending the last two seasons with Italian side Como, with the club preparing to activate the buy-back clause included in his deal. Real Madrid reportedly have a two-week window, beginning this Monday, to finalize the operation. Unlike several other major decisions tied to the club’s long-term sporting project and upcoming presidential election, Nico’s return appears to be straightforward internally. There is broad support within the club for bringing him back, and Florentino Pérez is reportedly able to approve the move without waiting for the election process to conclude. From Madrid’s perspective, the deal represents a major market opportunity. Re-signing Nico would cost the club around €9 million — a figure viewed as extremely favorable considering the growing interest in him across Europe. Reports in Italy have linked Inter Milan with a potential move worth close to €60 million after his standout performances this season. Nico had been waiting to see whether Como could secure Champions League qualification before final decisions were made regarding his future. However, regardless of the outcome, his path now appears set to lead back to the Bernabéu. The Argentine midfielder is expected to be one of the first returning players integrated into Real Madrid’s plans for next season. Another anticipated return is Endrick, whose loan spell away from the club is also coming to an end. Nico’s stock has risen dramatically over the past year. After emerging as one of Serie A’s most highly rated midfielders, he is now also expected to be part of Argentina’s squad for the upcoming World Cup — another sign of just how quickly his profile has grown.

Fede Valverde: Club’s First Uruguayan Captain

(Photo by Jose Breton/Pics Action/NurPhoto via Getty Images) | NurPhoto via Getty Images On his way out, Dani Carvajal handed the captain’s armband to Fede Valverde in a moment of symbolism. Real Madrid’s captaincy is decided by seniority at the club. Four players are designated as captains in order of their seniority. The order next season, barring any surprising turn of events in the transfer window, will start with Fede Valverde. The 27-year-old midfielder has played 372 games for Real Madrid. He has been under heavy scrutiny since his altercation with Aurélien Tchouaméni. Having served a two-week hiatus, he was called up by Álvaro Arbeloa for the last game of the season. It is important to recognize that Valverde is not the first Uruguayan to simply captain Real Madrid. Club legend José Santamaría played 337 games between 1957 and 1966 and wore the armband on many occasions. However, Fede Valverde is the first Uruguayan to become the designated first captain of the club with the seniority rule in full effect.

Alvaro Arbeloa cancels his final press conference as Real Madrid coach
MADRID, SPAIN - MAY 23: Alvaro Arbeloa, Head Coach of Real Madrid, looks on prior to the LaLiga EA Sports match between Real Madrid CF and Athletic Club at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on May 23, 2026 in Madrid, Spain. (Photo by Angel Martinez/Getty Images) | Getty Images Alvaro Arbeloa cancelled his final post-match press conference as the head coach of Real Madrid after their 4-2 win over Athletic Club on Saturday. Arbeloa did not speak to the crowd the way Carlo Ancelotti did last season, and had already talked about how he felt being the coach of the team in the pre-game press conference on Friday morning. In that conference, Arbeloa said: “I hope it’s just a ‘see you soon.’ I’ve always considered Madrid my home. I’ve been with Madrid for 20 years; it’s my home. It’s my last game this season; I don’t know if it’s the last of my life as Madrid’s coach—we never know. I’ll try to enjoy it. “I know what the team was like when I arrived. What I’ve had to deal with. If I’d started from the beginning, it would have been different. But that’s what I had to work with, and I tried to do it the best way possible. Not my way, but the best way. We’ve done a lot of things right; I’m happy with what we’ve done.” Seeing the club’s farewell for David Alaba and Dani Carvajal, the coach must have decided that there is no point in having a press conference after the match.

Dani Carvajal: “Real Madrid is my life”
MADRID, SPAIN - MAY 23: Daniel Carvajal of Real Madrid is throwing up in the air by his teammates wearing all a shirt with his name on after his final match played for Real Madrid during the LaLiga EA Sports match between Real Madrid v Athletic de Bilbao at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on May 23, 2026 in Madrid Spain (Photo by M Gracia Jimenez/Soccrates/Getty Images) | Getty Images Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal spoke to RMTV and then to the Bernabeu after playing the last match of his illustrious time at the club. He was asked about what the club means to him, to which he said: “It’s not just that it’s the club of my life, it is my life. I was born a Real Madrid fan, I’ve been here for 23 years, I’ve played in every division, I’ve won everything there is to win, I’ve even been captain… I couldn’t ask for more. I’m leaving very happy and fulfilled.” Carvajal on his time at Real Madrid “If someone had told me as a child that I would have this career, I wouldn’t have imagined it. It’s been wonderful, spectacular from the first day to the last. Triumphs, difficult moments that helped me mature, sharing a dressing room with wonderful people… It’s the best club in the world. I always tried to be kind to everyone, even with my frustrations if I lost possession or misplaced a pass. But I hope everyone leaves with good memories of Dani Carvajal. We’ll see each other in the future.” Carvajal on how he feels “It’s very difficult to describe. You get emotional without knowing why. Yesterday, seeing the training ground, today seeing the banner they made for me, the ovations… How could I not be emotional? I’m closing a wonderful chapter, an unforgettable career. I only have words of gratitude for the club and the fans. Thank you, I’ve enjoyed it like a child, from the first day to the last, and I hope the feeling is mutual. I hope to be able to return to what is my home, in a different way, but helping out as always.” Carvajal on the golden era and Florentino Perez “Good evening, Madrid fans. It’s not an easy moment for me to speak because I’m very emotional about this grand farewell. First, I want to thank our president, Don Florentino. He’s the one who brought me back from Germany, and we’ve won many Champions Leagues together, but if I have to highlight one thing, it’s that not even 24 hours after my knee injury, he didn’t hesitate to renew my contract. Then I wanted to thank my teammates. We haven’t had two easy seasons, but I’m sure we’ll win again. This is Real Madrid, and we have to rise again, as our history tells us. I can’t help but remember the golden era. I can’t help but remember this golden era we’ve lived through. We’re bringing a wonderful era to a close: four Champions Leagues in five years, that tenth, three in a row, Cristiano, Ramos, Ancelotti, Zidane… Countless names that have carried this badge to new heights. They made us great and took us to the very top.” Carvajal to his family “I want to continue thanking my parents and my brother for making such a huge effort when I was a child. You have always been there, thank you. Also to my wife, my children… I have lived through two very difficult years, the bitter side of this sport, and you have filled my days with light. I love you all very much.” Carvajal to the fans “Finally, thank you all, you are wonderful. From the first day to the last, you carried me on your shoulders. Seeing this farewell makes me incredibly proud to be a Madridista. Thank you for the Madridista comebacks, for being there in the good times and the bad. Some careers are defined by success, and I only want you to remember me with pride and with the certainty that I gave everything for this shirt. Yesterday, today, and always, Hala Madrid!”

Álvaro Arbeloa: “I’m leaving, but I hope this is a ‘see you soon’, not a ‘goodbye’”
VALDEBEBAS, SPAIN - MAY 16: Alvaro Arbeloa, head coach of Real Madrid, attends his press conference during the training day of Real Madrid ahead the Spanish League, LaLiga EA Sports, football match against Sevilla FC at Ciudad Deportiva Real Madrid on May 16, 2026, in Madrid, Spain. (Photo By Dennis Agyeman/Europa Press via Getty Images) | Europa Press via Getty Images Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa confirmed that he would be leaving the club after the last game of the La Liga season against Athletic Club, going on to say that, “I hope it’s just a ‘see you soon.’ I’ve always considered Madrid my home. I’ve been with Madrid for 20 years; it’s my home. It’s my last game this season; I don’t know if it’s the last of my life as Madrid’s coach—we never know. I’ll try to enjoy it. And I’m focused on winning.” Arbeloa on Athletic Club “I want to see a great game, say goodbye to the fans, and give them a victory. It’s a huge effort; playing the last home game is special. I want to give the Bernabéu a treat.” Arbeloa on Joan Laporta’s words on Real Madrid and referees “I don’t give much weight to Laporta’s words; we’ve always been very clear about what we’ve said. He’s probably referring to the Negreira Case… We’re still waiting for a resolution to such a serious case that has tarnished Spanish football. Many referees from that era are still around; we still have the same feeling. These aren’t normal things. We have to keep speaking out against it. A Madrid player is bleeding, and that referee gets the honor of officiating the Copa del Rey final.” Arbeloa on his future “I’m not here to talk about possibilities. Mou has a fantastic coaching staff; he’s surrounded by great people. If he comes, he’ll bring his own team, as he should. There’s no chance I’ll be joining him. I’ve spent the last four months thinking about Madrid; from now on, it’s time to think about myself. I’ve taken the leap, and I feel ready for new challenges.” Arbeloa on Dani Carvajal “He’s a symbol of what a Madrid player should be. He laid the first stone at Valdebebas; he’s special, one of a kind. It’ll be a beautiful day for everyone—paying him tribute. He’ll start the game, and I’m sure that when he’s substituted for the tribute, everyone will stand up. When he looks back, he’ll be very proud of what he’s done. We Madridistas have been very lucky.” Arbeloa on Vinícius’ absence “He has been granted leave by the club for a personal matter; we don’t know if he’ll be able to be here tomorrow.” Arbeloa on the best full-backs in Real Madrid’s history “I’d definitely put Carvajal at the top. Dani has been able to dominate in both aspects—going forward and defending. He’s a natural competitor; he’s faced the best.” Arbeloa on his relationship with the players “I’m very grateful to them for what we’ve been through. I’m aware that with 25 different people you can’t have the same relationship. We’ve had our differences; that’s normal. We’ve resolved them in the best way possible. We’ve shown each other respect; the opportunity came when it came. For me, what’s always important is how you handle it, whatever happens to you. And I’ve handled it the best way possible, thinking about Madrid. I’ve thought more about Madrid than about myself these past few months, but I’ve done what’s best for the club. At another club it would have been different, but this was what I had to do. There’s no room for regret.” Arbeloa on his legacy “I know what the team was like when I arrived. What I’ve had to deal with. If I’d started from the beginning, it would have been different. But that’s what I had to work with, and I tried to do it the best way possible. Not my way, but the best way. We’ve done a lot of things right; I’m happy with what we’ve done.” Arbeloa on the locker room “I’m leaving with a great relationship with almost everyone.” Arbeloa on elections “There are some things I can’t get involved in. I think it’s great that they’re running; they know where the bar is set. We’ll be listening and seeing what ideas they can bring to the table.” Arbeloa on whether the club decided his future “I’ve done what I believed in, not because I was forced to.” Arbeloa on conversations with the players “Almost all of them have helped me grow as a coach and as a person. I’ve had a relationship with everyone, I’ve had conversations; sometimes we’ve agreed, other times we haven’t. I’m lucky that I’ve been where they are; I’ve been through those situations, I understand them. Often, their perspective is different from that of a coach. It’s easier for me to put myself in their shoes than it is for them to put themselves in mine. I’m leaving with a great deal of gratitude; they’ve made me better, they’ve made me enjoy every day. I’m very grateful to the club for the opportunity; I’m leaving with gratitude after these eight years, leaving behind many friends. Hopefully one day I can return.”

What José Mourinho’s transfer policy during his first stint at Real Madrid may tell us about potential player signings this summer.
When José Mourinho arrived at Valdebebas in the summer of 2010, part of the foundation of the Real Madrid team that would go on to win four Champions Leagues in five seasons was already in place. Sergio Ramos, Pepe and Marcelo had been starters at Madrid for several seasons. Madrid’s legendary transfer window that brought Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Kaká, Xabi Alonso and Álvaro Arbeloa to the club preceded the Portuguese manager by one year. But that is not to minimize the work and important pieces Mourinho added to the Madrid squad. The Portuguese manager spent an aggregate €187.5 million on player signings and loans over his three years at the club — an average of €62.5 million per season. That was the seventh most in Europe over those three seasons, but considerably less than the amount spent by Manchester City (€336.6M), Chelsea (€327.7M) or PSG (€267.1M) during that period. Remember that the then €101 million record signing of Gareth Bale occurred in the summer after Mourinho left the club. According to Transfermarkt data, no Mourinho signing at Madrid reached €40 million, with the biggest signings in the Mourinho Madrid era being Luka Modric for €35 million in 2012, Ángel Di María for €33 million in 2010 and Fábio Coentrão for €30 million in 2011 — the former two becoming two of the best signings in club history. The Portuguese manager showed a special affinity for players from the Bundesliga and Premier League during his first stint at Madrid, signing four players from the German league (Mesut Özil, Sami Khedira, Nuri Sahin and Hamit Altintop) as well as four players from the English top division (Ricardo Carvalho, Emmanuel Adebayor, Luka Modric and Michael Essien), albeit two (Essien and Adebayor) were players received on loan. Curiously, Mourinho never signed a player from the Serie A during his 3-year tenure at the club despite having arrived from Inter Milan. A look back at Mourinho’s first stint at Madrid reveals he used his first transfer window at the club to sign players to provide depth across all of Madrid’s lines, adding two young wingers (Di María and Pedro León), two precocious attacking midfielders (Özil and Sergio Canales) and one young defensive midfielder (Khedira). All five were under 24 years of age when they were signed. Mourinho added to that mix one veteran centre-back (Carvalho) that he had previously managed at Porto and Chelsea. Four of the six aforementioned players became frequent names in Mourinho’s 11 during his first season at the club, with Carvalho, Özil and Di María all logging over 3,500 minutes their first season and Khedira surpassing the 3,000-minute mark. The Portuguese manager also added a forward (Adebayor) on loan in the winter transfer window to compensate for Gonzalo Higuaín’s unavailability due to a back injury. Mourinho’s second summer with Madrid saw him further strengthen the backline by bringing on Fabio Coentrão and an 18-year-old Raphaël Varane who would go on to become one of Europe’s best centre-backs. Then in his third season he closed a signing for which Madridistas will be eternally grateful, the incorporation of Modric from Tottenham days before turning 27. The Croatian maestro would go on to become the player with most trophies in club history and arguably the greatest midfielder in football history. There are rumours circulating that the Portuguese coach would like to bring on a player from the Portuguese Liga, Danish defensive midfielder Morten Hjulmand from Sporting. The 26-year-old Hjulmand arrived in Portugal from Serie A in 2023 and has played nearly 4000 minutes at Sporting this season, including over 900 minutes in Champions League. Hjulmand typically plays in a double pivot system alongside another defensive midfielder. Hjulmand is averaging 65 passes per 90 minutes in the Portuguese liga with 91% accuracy and is a demonstrated ball winner as documented by his 165 ball recoveries in league play this season, over 6.3 per 90 minutes. With Madrid needing to strengthen its backline due to recurring injuries to Eder Militão and the departures of David Alaba, Dani Carvajal and possibly Antonio Rüdiger, don’t be surprised to see Mourinho reach out to someone from his past as he previously did with Carvalho to incorporate a seasoned centre-back to pair with Dean Huijsen. One possibility that has been floated is signing Nicolás Otamendi, the 38-year-old whose contract with Benfica ends in June, as a short-term solution. However age may be a deterrent to signing the Argentine as Carvalho was only 32 when he joined Madrid in 2010. Madrid fans will want to pay special attention to this summer’s World Cup standouts for possible club signings as both Özil and Khedira were signed in the summer of 2010 following stellar World Cup performances in South Africa with Germany; and James Rodríguez joined in 2014 following his sensational World Cup in Brazil. Could a spectacular performance in this summer’s World Cup by Elliot Anderson or Adam Wharton lead to Madrid opening up its coffers for either English midfielder? Time will tell, but if Mourinho’s past at Madrid tells us anything is that he is more likely to focus on players with less name recognition, but that are a more complementary fit to the current foundation. Rest assured that Mourinho is already analyzing the pieces needed to return Madrid to European glory.

Real Madrid Roundup: Valdano Calls for Dressing Room Revolution, Tebas Talks Elections, Pedro León Retires
MADRID, SPAIN - MAY 31: Real Madrid's new coach Jose Mourinho (L) and Jorge Valdano, general director of Real Madrid, pose during a press conference at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on May 31, 2010 in Madrid, Spain. (Photo by Angel Martinez/Getty Images) | Getty Images Real Madrid-related news was relatively quiet today outside of the major headlines, but there were still a handful of notable comments and developments worth rounding up. Former Real Madrid general manager Jorge Valdano made headlines during the launch of Alfredo Relaño’s new book 366 footballers, where he reflected on the club’s current situation and the potential return of José Mourinho in some capacity around the club. Valdano cautioned against viewing Mourinho as a miracle solution to Real Madrid’s problems: “Mourinho won’t be the one to solve all of Real Madrid’s problems. Players will have to be signed in key positions. There even needs to be a leadership revolution within the dressing room, given what we’ve seen.” Valdano has historically complicated relationship with Mourinho during the Portuguese manager’s first stint at the club. Beyond the Mourinho angle, Valdano’s point is that Real Madrid’s upcoming summer is not just about tactical tweaks, but about resetting leadership dynamics inside the squad after a back-to-back underwhelming campaigns. Meanwhile, La Liga president Javier Tebas also spoke publicly today during an appearance at Loyola University in Córdoba alongside Córdoba CEO Antonio Fernández Monterrubio. Tebas touched on several topics related to Real Madrid, including the club’s presidential structure and its ongoing complaints about television revenue distribution. Regarding the possibility of presidential elections at the club, Tebas said: “I believe that if there are elections at Real Madrid, that’s fine, and if not, it means no one has been able to offer an alternative to the current president.” He later added: “Whether Real Madrid needs a generational change in the presidency is something that its members will have to decide.” Tebas also pushed back against Real Madrid’s long-standing argument that Spanish clubs are economically disadvantaged compared to Premier League sides: “Real Madrid believes that it should earn more from television rights because it says that it cannot compete with the Premier League clubs, when that is not the case.” Elsewhere, former Real Madrid midfielder Pedro León officially announced his retirement from professional football. The 39-year-old enjoyed a long career that included spells with Murcia, Getafe, Eibar, and a brief period at Real Madrid during the Mourinho era. Pedro León reflected emotionally on his career and roots in Murcia: “Thank you for your love and affection in good times and bad. I have tried to represent, to the best of my ability, that Murcia-supporting boy from Mula who went to see them at the stadium every Sunday.” Finally, Athletic Club manager Ernesto Valverde spoke ahead of what will be his final match in charge of the Basque club — fittingly against Real Madrid this weekend. Valverde reflected on reaching 504 matches as Athletic manager: “Sometimes I ask myself how I’ve managed to reach this number; you just keep pushing.” He also admitted that stepping away from coaching will likely hit him emotionally once the season begins again: “When you’ve spent your whole life doing something, and with the intensity that all coaches have, of course you’re going to miss it.”

Spain Referees Union files formal complaint against Real Madrid
Spain’s Referees’ Union has filed formal complaints against Real Madrid, president Florentino Pérez and the club’s official television network, accusing them of waging a systematic campaign of harassment that endangers officials. According to AESAF, the relentless, critical coverage broadcast by Real Madrid TV, combined with aggressive public statements from Pérez, has crossed the line from sporting critique into systemic intimidation. The union warns that the club’s media strategy is creating a toxic atmosphere that could ultimately incite real-world hostility or physical violence against match officials. “The continuous broadcast of content that systematically questions and discredits the refereeing collective deteriorates the climate of respect necessary for sports to take place,” the union said in a statement. AESAF added that its legal action was aimed at protecting “the dignity, integrity, and safety” of Spanish referees so they can work in an environment free of targeted hostility. For over a year, Real Madrid TV has drawn fierce criticism from rival teams and league officials for broadcasting highly produced, critical videos dissecting the alleged past errors of referees assigned to upcoming Real Madrid matches. While Real Madrid has historically maintained that it is merely exercising its right to free speech and highlighting legitimate flaws in Spanish officiating, the referees’ union is now signaling that it will no longer tolerate the pressure.

Mourinho’s Real Madrid Staff Taking Shape Ahead of Bernabéu Return — Report
Jose Mourinho, head coach of SL Benfica, during the Primeira Liga match between GD Estoril Praia and SL Benfica at Estadio Antonio Coimbra da Mota in Estoril, Portugal, on May 16, 2026. (Photo by Valter Gouveia/NurPhoto via Getty Images) | NurPhoto via Getty Images According to a report from AS, José Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid is beginning to take clearer shape behind the scenes, with the Portuguese manager reportedly finalizing the majority of his coaching staff ahead of his arrival at Valdebebas. The report states that Mourinho will bring several trusted collaborators with him from Benfica, including assistants João Tralhão and Pedro Machado, who currently serve on Benfica’s coaching staff. Both figures are considered among Mourinho’s closest tactical confidants and are expected to play central roles in his new setup at Madrid. AS also reports that analyst Roberto Merella will join the project. Merella has worked closely with Mourinho for several years, dating back to their time together at Roma. Meanwhile, António Dias is expected to take over as fitness coach, while Nuno Santos is lined up to become the club’s new goalkeeping coach. Those appointments could have important implications for Antonio Pintus and Luis Llopis, two respected members of Madrid’s current technical structure. While neither is necessarily expected to leave the club outright, their exact responsibilities under Mourinho remain unclear. The coaching reshuffle will also include departures. AS says Ricardo Formosinho and Ricardo Rocha will not continue as part of Mourinho’s new staff at Real Madrid, although their next destinations have not yet emerged. One notable detail from the report is Mourinho’s desire to add a senior assistant from within Real Madrid itself. The idea would mirror the role Aitor Karanka occupied during Mourinho’s first spell at the Bernabéu — someone familiar with the club structure who can help bridge the gap between the coaching staff and the institution. While Tralhão and Machado are expected to be Mourinho’s primary assistants on matchdays, AS describes Mourinho’s internal working dynamic as far less hierarchical than many might assume. Behind closed doors, the environment is reportedly highly collaborative, with every staff member encouraged to contribute ideas before Mourinho makes the final decision. The majority of the incoming group already has significant experience working together. Tralhão, Machado, and Dias all worked alongside Mourinho during his stint at Fenerbahçe before following him to Benfica. Merella joined Mourinho’s circle during their time at Roma, while Nuno Santos has crossed paths with the Portuguese coach at several clubs, including Tottenham, Roma, and Benfica. Despite bringing many trusted figures with him, Mourinho is also expected to retain much of Real Madrid’s existing day-to-day infrastructure, particularly within the medical and physiotherapy departments. As things stand, Mourinho’s reported staff setup would look something like this: João Tralhão — Assistant coach Pedro Machado — Assistant coach António Dias — Fitness coach Roberto Merella — Analyst Nuno Santos — Goalkeeping coach One additional internal assistant — Still undecided

Real Madrid vs Athletic Club Preview: Farewell Night at the Bernabéu
MADRID, SPAIN - MAY 24: Alvaro Arbeloa (L) and Dani Carvajal of Real Madrid lifts the Champions League trophy during the UEFA Champions League Final between Real Madrid and Atletico de Madrid at Estadio da Luz on May 24, 2014 in Lisbon, Portugal. (Photo by Helios de la Rubia/Real Madrid via Getty Images) | Real Madrid via Getty Images There is no title race left to decide. No European qualification battle. No desperate survival fight. And yet, Saturday night at the Santiago Bernabéu carries emotional weight that exceeds the standings. Real Madrid host Athletic Club in what is expected to be Álvaro Arbeloa’s final match in charge before José Mourinho’s anticipated return to the dugout, while Dani Carvajal is also set to say goodbye to the Bernabéu after an era-defining career in white. For Athletic, it closes Ernesto Valverde’s third spell at the club before Edin Terzić arrives this summer. In another season, this fixture might have been loaded with consequences. Instead, it arrives as a reflective ending for two clubs who entered the campaign with high ambitions and leave it wondering what went wrong. A season that fizzled out Madrid’s faint title hopes officially died after the recent 2-0 Clasico defeat earlier this month. That loss ended any mathematical chance of silverware and confirmed what has been an underwhelming season both on and off the pitch. Still, Los Blancos have finished with some professionalism. Consecutive wins over Real Oviedo and Sevilla mean they have now won three of their last four league games, and there is a chance to close the season on a respectable note in front of their home supporters. The issue has not been results alone. It has been the lack of cohesion. Madrid have rarely looked fluid in attack, and even recent victories have felt more functional than convincing. Their last three wins have all come by either 1-0 or 2-0 scorelines, reflecting a team that can still control games without ever truly overwhelming opponents. Athletic’s decline has also been sharp. After finishing fourth with 70 points last season, Los Leones are heading for a disappointing mid-table finish with just 45 points. A 1-1 draw against Celta Vigo last weekend officially ended their European hopes, and they enter the Bernabéu with only four points collected from their previous five matches. Valverde’s side have struggled badly against elite opposition all season, losing all five matches against top-three teams while scoring just once in those encounters. Injury concerns continue for Athletic Athletic’s preparation for the Bernabéu has been dominated by injuries. Oihan Sancet and Unai Gómez both trained separately at Lezama this week. Sancet continues to recover from a hamstring issue and has returned to high-intensity ball work, while Gómez was limited to individual running sessions after being substituted at halftime against Celta. Nico Williams remains the major absentee concern. The winger stayed inside the gym to manage his own hamstring problem, with Spain manager Luis de la Fuente closely monitoring his recovery ahead of the upcoming World Cup squad announcement. Without Nico’s explosiveness, Athletic lose almost all of their transitional threat. That matters against a Madrid side who controlled the reverse fixture comfortably earlier this season, winning 3-0 while limiting Athletic to just 0.84 expected goals. There was at least one positive development for Valverde: Dani Vivian returned to training and should be available for selection. Meanwhile, Saturday will also carry historic significance for Iñaki Williams, who is set to make his 510th official appearance for Athletic Club — drawing level with Andoni Iraola as the sixth-highest appearance maker in club history. Williams has scored 115 goals for Athletic and remains one of the defining figures of the modern era at the club. Tactical expectations: slow tempo, low margins Everything points toward a controlled, low-scoring contest. Recent Madrid matches have consistently followed that pattern. All of their previous eight league games have finished with three or fewer total goals, while only one of those fixtures produced more than one first-half goal. Athletic’s recent games have been even slower starters. Their last six matches have all featured one or fewer goals before halftime. That makes sense stylistically. Neither side has much incentive to open the game up recklessly, and Athletic — especially without Nico Williams — are unlikely to press aggressively or take major attacking risks early on. Madrid’s scoring trends also support the expectation of a gradual game. Only 42% of their league goals this season have come in the first half, while most of their attacking breakthroughs have arrived after the interval. Still, Arbeloa’s side should possess enough quality to edge the contest. Kylian Mbappé and Fede Valverde are both fit again, and Madrid are expected to field one of their strongest lineups on paper in weeks. Probable lineups Real Madrid Courtois; Fran Garcia, Huijsen, Rudiger, Carvajal; Valverde, Tchouameni; Vinicius Jr., Bellingham, Brahim Diaz; Mbappé Athletic Club Unai Simon; Boiro, Laporte, Yeray, Gorosabel; Ruiz de Galarreta, Jauregizar; Berenguer, Navarro, Iñaki Williams; Guruzeta One final Bernabéu goodbye More than anything, this feels like a farewell night. For Arbeloa, it is the end of a difficult interim spell in impossible circumstances. For Carvajal, it is the final appearance. The Bernabéu crowd will almost certainly create an emotional atmosphere, and Madrid should have enough talent to give supporters a winning sendoff. But if this season has taught us anything, it is that this Real Madrid side rarely makes things easy — or particularly entertaining. Prediction Real Madrid 2-0 Athletic Club A controlled, emotionally charged final home game in which Madrid’s superior individual quality eventually makes the difference, even if the overall performance once again leaves room for improvement.

Shoutout to the mods who do a fantastic job, Ezek, Valyrian Steel, Kung_Fu_Zizou, Juninho, NeRObutBlanco and yours truly, Felipejack. Two Valverdes? French journalist Pablo Gayicho wrote: “The general feeling about Valverde within the team is astonishment because he has two faces, one he presents to the media by portraying himself as the loyal player who works for the team, and another during training and through his behavior within the team group..” It was expected of a big player alongside legends like Kroos and Modrić and Benzema to possess leadership qualities, whereas what emerged was a player who shows arrogance in his dealings with the young players and also the technical staff—one of the many examples was his problems with members of Xabi Alonso’s staff, and at times he would not listen to their instructions (he considers himself a better player and not in need of guidance from the Spanish coach’s staff).. In addition to this, his mockery of a number of his teammates within the group and his arrogant treatment of the team’s youth, while he is supposed to be a leader..” “This is why reports emerged saying that many people within Real Madrid are not surprised by what happened in the end with Tchouaméni, because his style had been the subject of widespread criticism throughout the year and the season..” Release clause — paid SkySport stated Real Madrid already paid the €3M release clause Mourinho had over his contract with Benfica. Now, he’d be free to sign his new contract. From the games between Benfica and Real Madrid this season, Mourinho identified several weakness in the squad, considering some positions have many players, while others positions lack proper competition. L’ Equipe reports that Real Madrid would have agreed to give Mourinho full power in transfers. This is really hard to believe, and the report even said this never happened under Florentino Perez. Curiously, we also hear from Cortegana that the club is working on extending Rudiger’s contract: En mi opinión, es un error, y estas decisiones solo se están tomando porque no quieren gastar dinero en fichajes. Es el primer indicio de que los fichajes de este verano se reducirán al mínimo indispensable. https://t.co/7P93Yozzq9 — Don Amancio (@DonShelby__) May 19, 2026 Let’s all remember what Mourinho said when he coached us for the first time about forwards who don’t press/defend: If you want to press high, but your forwards don’t press, you can’t press high. If you want to lower the block and defend more near your own goal, but your forward don’t drop, you don’t have a block. This means that, without forwards who work well defensively, you as a team can’t defend well. At the same time, a team without forwards who are decisive offensively is difficult to win something. Without forwards that score a high average of goals, especially in important games, those who don’t hide, it’s very difficult to win important things. 🔙 JOSÉ MOURINHO: “Si quieres presionar alto y tus delanteros no presionan, no puedes presionar alto.

Mourinho requests Real Madrid’s acquisition of Morten Hjulmand -report
Soon-to-be Real Madrid coach José Mourinho has requested the signing of Sporting Lisbon midfielder Morten Hjulmand, according to a report from COPE’s Miguel Ángel Díaz. The Danish midfielder could leave his club for a fee of around €50 million, per that same report. Hjulmand will turn 27 years old this summer, so his signing wouldn’t fit the transfer policy Real Madrid have implement over the last few years. Still, he’s a defensive midfielder with a solid ability to distribute the ball, something Mourinho would like to address in the upcoming transfer window, according to several reports published in the Spanish press. Real Madrid will likely sign a pure midfielder this summer, with other players like Manchester City’s Rodri Hernández reportedly on the club’s radar.

Mourinho’s two-year deal will include an automatic one-year extension if he wins La Liga -report
José Mourinho’s future two-year contract with Real Madrid will feature an automatic one-year extension if the Portuguese manager wins La Liga, according to a report published on AS. Real Madrid is prepared to pay a buyout clause of up to €6 million to release the Portuguese manager from his current contract with Benfica. The announcement will not be made official until Florentino Pérez is re-elected as Real Madrid president, something which could take a few weeks if Enrique Riquelme confirms his candidacy. Mourinho has requested stability and time from Florentino Pérez to develop his project, aiming to shield himself from early dismissal rumors like those that plagued Xabi Alonso earlier in the season. Mourinho’s return marks an attempt from the club to restore order and leadership to a locker room that has recently suffered from internal friction, a lack of clear leadership and poor performances from big stars like Kylian Mbappé, Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham or Fede Valverde.

Thibaut Courtois Becomes Co-Owner Of CD Extremadura Through NXTPLAY Investment Group
MADRID, SPAIN - MAY 14: Thibaut Courtois of Real Madrid celebrates the victory during the LaLiga EA Sports match between Real Madrid v Real Oviedo at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on May 14, 2026 in Madrid Spain (Photo by Maria Gracia Jimenez/Soccrates/Getty Images) | Getty Images Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has taken another step into football ownership after NXTPLAY — the sports investment platform he co-founded alongside Gonzalo Vila — officially acquired a stake in Spanish club CD Extremadura. The agreement was announced this week by both parties, with current club president Daniel Tafur remaining in charge of the sporting and institutional direction of the project despite the new investment. According to the announcement, discussions between Extremadura and NXTPLAY had been ongoing for close to a year before the deal was finalized. The timing of the acquisition coincides with one of the most successful periods in the club’s modern history. CD Extremadura recently secured promotion to Primera Federación after completing a remarkable run of four consecutive promotions — an unprecedented achievement in Spanish football. The club’s rapid rise has transformed Extremadura into one of the more compelling rebuilding stories in the Spanish football pyramid after years of financial and institutional instability. For Courtois and NXTPLAY, the investment represents the platform’s second major football ownership project. Earlier this season, NXTPLAY also acquired a stake in French side Le Mans FC, who recently secured promotion back to Ligue 1. As a result, both clubs operating under the NXTPLAY umbrella achieved promotion during the same campaign. The dual success immediately strengthens the visibility of the project and reinforces the group’s ambitions within football ownership and development. While Courtois remains fully focused on his playing career at Real Madrid, the Belgian goalkeeper has increasingly expanded his interests away from the pitch in recent years, including ventures in esports, technology, and now multi-club football investment. The announcement emphasized that work has already begun behind the scenes to prepare for what both sides view as the most ambitious phase of the Extremadura project so far. Competing in Primera Federación will present a significantly greater challenge both financially and competitively, but the club’s leadership believes the current momentum can continue. The long-term objective remains clear: returning Extremadura to professional football and eventually re-establishing the club at a higher level within the Spanish game. For a club that only recently was fighting its way back from collapse, the arrival of outside investment tied to one of football’s biggest names represents another major turning point in an already extraordinary rise.
