Vinicius, Real Madrid will negotiate contract extension later this month -report
Vinicius Junior will meet with Real Madrid’s board in late July to keep negotiating a contract extension, according to a report published on AS. The Brazilian attacker is set to become a free agent and will be able to sign a deal with other clubs on January 1st if the two parts can’t reach an agreement. Vinicius wants a significant salary raise and he rejected Real Madrid’s last offer. Still, it looks like he wants to stay in the club and sources inside the club appear to be optimistic about the upcoming negotiations, per that same report. Leadership appears to be breathing a collective sigh of relief following recent messages. A transfer of the Brazilian was never under consideration, with the focus instead on finalizing a contract extension. Source. Diario AS Odds of Vinicius signing this extension seem high, although the same was said a few months ago and the two parts couldn’t reach an agreement.

Football Daily | Belgium and the End Of The Golden Generation Klaxon
Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! Look at it up there on the hill, shining in the sunlight, an almost imperceptible aura of melancholia surrounding it like a halo. Look at the ornate carvings, the faces etched across its flanks. There’s Davor Suker! Preben Elkjær! Ferenc Puskas! Is that … it is! It’s Danny Mills, his face almost entirely worn away by the years of tourists rubbing it for luck. Yes, it’s the End Of The Golden Generation Klaxon and it’s sounding its low mournful drone across the California plains as Belgium’s best depart following their quarter-final loss to Spain in Los Angeles. Though in truth it has been whining in the background for a while now. The Red Devils’ real recent high point was probably all the way back in 2018 when peak De Bruyne, Lukaku and Courtois were joined by Alderweireld, Vermaelen, Kompany, Vertonghen, Fellaini, Hazard, Carrasco, you know, Mertens, Dembélé … Sessions. But there was no escaping the symbolism of the botched torch pass – a tearful Courtois heading off with an injury in the second half at SoFi Stadium, his replacement Senne Lammens fluffling his lines and handing Mikel Merino Spain’s winner on a plate. “I gave him a big hug. He’s a great goalkeeper. You only get stronger from this,” Courtois said of his hapless teammate. “Eventually you cannot say much more to him or give him much more advice. He is a strong guy, strong personality. I’m sure he’ll be fine. You know, he will have some holidays and then regroup in Manchester and have a great season.” Belgium – who were further hamstrung by the loss of their captain, Youri Tielemans, to knack in the warm-up – have a rebuilding job to do, although those waters are slightly muddied by reports suggesting Courtois fancies an unhelpful year off from the international game before returning for the Euro 2028 qualifiers. Spain, meanwhile, can look forward (if that is the right phrase) to a semi-final meeting with France. “They’ll be just as worried as we are,” roared Luis de la Fuente, perhaps slightly being stitched up in translation. I can only hope that when Jürgen Klopp flew Team Mbappé around for what turned out to be no good reason, he at least booked the flight on Trivago” – Scott Pratt. As the Bayeux Tapestry was being unloaded at the British Museum in the dead of night I couldn’t help thinking ‘it’s coming home.’ An omen perhaps? 1,000 years of hurt?” – Allastair McGillivray. Claude Makelele backs Tchouaméni, defends Mbappé, and outlines what Real Madrid still need
PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - JULY 4: Claude Makelele is interviewed before the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round Of 16 match between Paraguay and France at Philadelphia Stadium on July 4, 2026 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Roger Wimmer/ISI Photos/ISI Photos via Getty Images) | ISI Photos via Getty Images Former Real Madrid midfielder Claude Makelele has shared his thoughts on several of the club’s biggest talking points in an interview with DAZN, praising Aurélien Tchouaméni’s performances, defending Kylian Mbappé from criticism, and identifying the type of midfielder he believes Los Blancos are still missing. Asked about Real Madrid’s recent campaign, Makelele singled out Tchouaméni as the team’s most reliable performer and defending the club’s decision to extend his contract. “Tchouameni was the only consistent player from beginning to end.” The French legend also expressed confidence in José Mourinho’s return to the Santiago Bernabéu, while stressing that even one of football’s elite coaches will need the right squad to challenge for domestic honors. “Mourinho isn’t stupid, he’s a good coach, one of the best coaches. He knows he’s going to need a strong team to win La Liga.” Makelele also came to the defense of Mbappé, arguing that the French forward has been unfairly criticized and reminding observers of a striker’s natural mentality. “I don’t agree (with the Mbappe criticism). A lot of people are criticizing Mbappé. He’s for the team, but he’s a striker. A striker always wants to score.” The former midfielder believes Real Madrid’s biggest tactical need lies in the center of the pitch, pointing to the absence of a player capable of carrying the ball through midfield and accelerating attacks. “At Real Madrid, there isn’t that type of midfielder who carries the ball and breaks lines. They need a player like that, who can deliver quick passes to the attackers, to himself, to Vinicius Junior, and to the players up front.” He also suggested that Mbappé has occasionally been forced to drop too deep in search of possession, reducing his effectiveness in the penalty area. “Mbappe often comes to collect the ball in midfield, and who’s going to be up front? When he’s up front, he’s scoring.”

Thibaut Courtois suffers injury in Belgium’s World Cup defeat to Spain
INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA - JULY 10: Thibaut Courtois #1 of Belgium reacts with medical staff after being substituted during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Quarter Final match between Spain and Belgium at Los Angeles Stadium on July 10, 2026 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Luke Hales/Getty Images) | Getty Images Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was forced off with a hamstring injury during Belgium’s World Cup quarterfinal defeat to Spain, raising fresh concerns for both club and country. Courtois had been one of Belgium’s standout performers at SoFi Stadium, producing several important saves to keep his side in the contest before his night came to a premature end in the 72nd minute. The Madrid shot-stopper left the pitch visibly emotional after attempting to play through the injury. The problem first emerged just after the hour mark when Courtois went down following a routine play. After receiving treatment during a hydration break, he initially signaled that he was able to continue. However, only a few minutes later, the discomfort worsened, forcing Belgium to replace him with Senne Lammens. Speaking after the match, Courtois explained how the injury developed. “It was a bit of a pain, but oh well. On a long ball, I felt something, I thought my hamstring was tight because I’d played 30 long balls. I felt it a little on some saves, and on another long ball, I felt it getting worse. I sat down for a moment so the doctor could check it out, and I wanted to keep playing, but I couldn’t hit the ball, and the manager told me that if I wasn’t 100%, he’d substitute me. I said I felt bad, that I couldn’t play long balls, but I wanted to continue to see how it went. If I didn’t have to play long balls, I could continue, but it’s fine. If the manager wants someone who’s 100%, it’s no big deal.” The injury is an unwelcome development for Real Madrid, particularly given Courtois’ recent history with muscle problems. The Belgian had only recently put a right quadriceps injury behind him after returning to action in May and had enjoyed an injury-free run until Friday’s setback. Courtois also suggested he could take a step back from international duty after the World Cup, leaving the door open to a temporary break from Belgium. “Regarding my future with the national team, we’ll see. I’d perhaps like to take a break from the Nations League, as it’s not the most important thing. And maybe return for the Euro qualifiers. But ultimately, it’s a decision the federation has to make. If not, then perhaps today was my last match.” Reflecting on Belgium’s elimination, Courtois felt his performance had given his team every chance to remain in the game. “It’s bad luck that the rebound went to Fabián. In the second half they had more chances. I felt good about the saves, the balls over the top, Lamine’s crosses. I felt it was going to be very difficult to score a second goal against me.” He also came to the defense of substitute goalkeeper Senne Lammens after his costly error led to Mikel Merino’s goal, urging supporters not to blame his teammate. “It’s true that the pitch is very dry, it’s bad luck, in the end that’s football, you shouldn’t crucify the guy, he’s a great goalkeeper, he’s had a great season at United and he doesn’t deserve this.” Real Madrid will now await the results of further medical assessments to determine the severity of Courtois’ injury, hoping the issue proves to be only a minor setback ahead of the new season.

Real Madrid to receive €10 million as Mario Gila completes AC Milan move
MILAN, ITALY - JULY 10: (Editor's note: image has been retouched) AC Milan new signing Mario Gila signs his contract with the club at Casa Milan on July 10, 2026 in Milan, Italy. (Photo by Giuseppe Cottini/AC Milan via Getty Images) | AC Milan via Getty Images Real Madrid are set to receive a financial boost following Mario Gila’s permanent transfer from Lazio to AC Milan. The Rossoneri officially announced the signing of the Spanish center-back, who has put pen to paper on a five-year contract running until June 2031. According to reports from Italy, Gila will earn around €4.5 million per season with his new club. While Gila never made a competitive first-team appearance for Real Madrid, the club negotiated a valuable sell-on clause when he joined Lazio in the summer of 2022. That clause entitled Madrid to 50 percent of the fixed transfer fee from any future sale. Negotiations between Milan and Lazio were not entirely straightforward. Lazio reportedly turned down an initial offer worth €25 million plus €2 million in bonuses before eventually agreeing to a deal valued at €28 million. As a result of the agreement between Real Madrid and Lazio, Los Blancos are expected to receive approximately €10 million from the transfer. The move had been in the works for some time, with Milan identifying Gila as a defensive target before the club’s recent managerial changes. The 25-year-old quickly agreed to personal terms, effectively ending interest from other Serie A sides including Napoli and Atalanta. Gila arrived in Milan on Thursday after saying his goodbyes to teammates and staff at Lazio’s training ground in Formello. He completed his medical examinations on Friday before officially signing his contract and is expected to join Milan’s preseason preparations, which begin on July 13. For Real Madrid, Gila’s transfer represents another example of the club benefiting financially from the strategic clauses it has included in deals involving former academy graduates, adding another €10 million to the club’s coffers without having to sell a current first-team player.

Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! Marchons, marchons. Fans of France’s remaining rivals at the Geopolitics World Cup – and lovers of business-end big tournament jeopardy – were left sorely disappointed as the favourites steamrolled Morocco. Mourinho speaks in first interview since signing for Real Madrid
After completing his first morning session at the club’s Valdebebas training ground, José Mourinho, the newly appointed Real Madrid manager, visited the club’s television network for his first official interview since taking charge. “Words are not enough because this feels like a mission. It’s not about worrying about myself or whether I’ll win a lot or a little. I’m here to help everyone become better: players, staff… Creating a culture of work, responsibility, ambition, and something I know well—responsibility and the honor of working for Real Madrid. I really like this concept. It’s not about working at Real Madrid; it’s about working for Real Madrid. And it’s with this mission-driven spirit that I am here,” said Mourinho. The Portuguese coach revealed his plan for the 2026-27 pre-season stage. “Taking advantage of the next two weeks with positivity because, obviously, I would like to have all the players here. You have to look at it positively—it’s about getting to know the boys I’ll be working with and giving them the opportunity to get to know me. During the preseason, many of these boys will be here with Castilla, and I also enjoy participating and helping in the growth of this area. Here we are, and some world champion will join us. With great confidence, with a strong feeling that I love this club, and ¡Hala Madrid y nada más!” he added. Mourinho also said that he has been working with the front office for quite some time. “We are working a lot. It’s not like I arrived here today and everything starts now. We’ve been working hard for a long time with the club’s structure at different levels. Today, you can work without being physically present because technology helps us a lot, and today has basically been about arriving and ‘checking’ everything that has been done and what we still need to do,“ he concluded.

Khedira set to be Mourinho’s assistant coach at Real Madrid
Former Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira is set to join José Mourinho’s coaching staff as an assistant ahead of the upcoming season, club sources told Managing Madrid. The former German international was spotted in Madrid on Thursday alongside several of Mourinho’s longtime staff members. Mourinho signed Khedira in the summer of 2010 and the German player was a crucial starter during The Special One’s three-year tenure in the Spanish capital. Khedira has no coaching experience and spent some years as a commentator after retiring as a player in 2021. Having an assistant coach who knows the club has always been important for Mourinho. Former Real Madrid defender Aitor Karanka was his assistant during his years at Real Madrid and now Khedira will be the one taking over that role.

Mbappé misses penalty, scores, assists and gets injured as France beat Morocco
FOXBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS - JULY 09: Kylian Mbappe celebrates after scoring his team's first goal during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Quarter Final match between France and Morocco at Boston Stadium on July 09, 2026 in Foxborough, Massachusetts. (Photo by Marvin Ibo Guengoer - GES Sportfoto/Getty Images) | Getty Images The headlines in Boston surrounded Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé as he took his World Cup 2026 goal tally to eight goals as he scored France’s first goal in a 2-0 against Morocco just before the hour mark in a hard fought quarter-final with limited chances for either side. The French captain had enjoyed the best chance for his side as he stepped up to take a spot-kick win by the number 10 in the first half. Mbappé went down early after a diving challenge from Manchester United’s Noussair Mazrsoui. A three-and-a-half minute VAR review followed, with Mbappé made to wait before stepping up. His penalty was then saved by Yassine Bounou, previously of Atlético Madrid and Sevilla, diving down low to his left. It was Mbappé’s first penalty miss since October’s Clásico and his first for his country since June 2023. He made amends 30 minutes later as he broke the deadlock with a curling effort from the edge of the box leaving Bounou with no chance as it hit the side netting and gave France the lead. Mbappé turned provider minutes later as he teed up Paris Saint-Germain’s Ousmane Dembélé to add a second for Les Bleus, again from outside the penalty box, before the second period’s hydration break. Beyond the goal involvements, Mbappé was pivotal to offensive play, creating a match-high four chances, more than any other player on the field, and missing two big chances with the penalty and a shot worth 0.45 xG from eight yards out just minutes before his goal. The 27-year-old attacker’s involvement then ended early on 77 minutes as he went down with what appeared to be a relatively minor knock to be replaced by Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta. He was then pictured with ice on his right ankle on the bench. France were without Aurélien Tchouameni, who was rested on the bench as he continues to nurse a thigh injury, and stuck with Roma’s Kouadio Koné in midfield. New Real Madrid signing Ibrahima Konaté was also an unused substitute. Didier Deschamps’ side will now face the winner of Spain’s quarter-final against Belgium on Friday in a semi-final match-up to be played in Dallas on Tuesday.

I believe, though i have not proof, that this match against Morocco will be a statement game for France. Due to the very vile, ugly and racist statements of the government official from Paraguay. If Mbappe is exactly who we know he is, he’ll look to send a stronger message in this game by his performance. The last thing Morocco needed is an angry and charged up Mbappe/France playing against them. It’s time for the commander to come out!!!!!!!!! UNLEEASSSHHHH THE COOMANNNDDEEERRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! STRIKER? Is the Alvarez deal still on?, behind the scenes? because we still need a striker who can also play on the wings when needed in game IMO. AFTER TODAY One or more of our players is coming home. Tchouameni signs contract extension with Real Madrid until 2031 -report
Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni has signed a contract extension with the club, one which will keep him in the Spanish capital until the summer of 2031, according to reports from the Spanish press and Fabrizio Romano. The deal will likely be official after the World Cup. Tchouameni’s previous deal was set to expire in the summer of 2028, so Real Madrid wanted to reach this agreement this year. The French player bounced back from two difficult debut seasons and actually became a crucial player for the club last year, earning a spot as an undisputed starter in Real Madrid’s midfield line. Los Blancos will now want to extend other players, according to Fabrizio Romano. Most of the attention will go to Vinicius Junior, who hasn’t signed an extension yet and will be free to negotiate with other clubs in January 1st, 2027.

ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM | OPEN THREAD | JULY 8, 2026
Welcome to The Daily Merengue! THESE ARE YOUR MODS: Ezek XI, Valyrian Steel, KungFuZizou, NeRObutBlanco, Felipejack, and Juninho THE ELEPHANT Now that brazil’s world cup is over, we can finally put an end to the vini contract saga. I’ve said it before and i’ll say it again, it’s best Vini leaves to a club that will make him the main man. Becasue that’s how he excels, when he’s given the most freedom of expression. Something he no longer has here With an elephant like Mbappe now at our club. The only way forward for him to still remain at this club is if he accepts a different role with more restraints, same goes for Jude. Otherwise, him trying to shine whilst Mbappe and Jude are also trying to shine will not work for the overall team. THE CALF What will the shape of the team look like being clearly led by Mbappe?. I for one, don’t want a team led by Mbappe, Jude and Vini at the same time. 3 superstars gunning for personal glory, that’s a recipe for a 3rd trophy-less season. There should only ever be one main man. BLOWING LEADS African teams blowing leads go hand in hand. I dont have faith in morrocco, i frankly dont like them even though they’re the best on the continent so far. OUR ONLY HOPE France.

Betis, Real Madrid reach €4 million agreement for Fran García -report
Real Madrid and Betis have finalized the details over Fran García’s transfer to the Andalusian club and the Spanish left-back has also agreed to this move, which will be official very soon according to a report from Fabrizio Romano. Real Madrid will keep a 50% sell-on clause, per that same report. García made his return to Real Madrid in the summer of 2023 having just completed a very impressive season for Rayo Vallecano. He never established himself as a starter and barely got minutes under coaches Carlo Ancelotti, Xabi Alonso or Álvaro Arbeloa. García will turn 27 years old this summer, so it is unlikely that he makes significant progress as a player away from Real Madrid. Still, he has the quality to be an important player for Betis, so he should stay in LaLiga for many years to come.

Statesman, comedian and dealer of hard truths: how Kylian Mbappé became the king of this World Cup
The Frenchman is a footballer, flautist and a thespian. There’s no question he is the most thrilling and compelling figure at this year’s tournament This has been the World Cup of characters, bold fashion statements, and bantz: we’ve had Thomas Tuchel rubber-banding around the England dressing room like a teen at his first all-ages rave, and Iván Barton booting Miguel Almirón from the field as if sentencing him to death. Mauricio Pochettino and his $500 overshirt have brought fresh energy and inspiration to the wardrobes of convex middle-aged men the world over. Jokester Javier Aguirre’s avuncular “fuck you” at Anthony Gordon has pushed bilateral relations between Mexico and England to their warmest point since the British-brokered peace that ended the Pastry War of 1839. Erling Haaland has shown it’s possible to be Jaws in front of goal and Scooby Doo once the ball is in the back of the net, that there’s nothing about football so important that it can’t make way for some silly bit of online comedy. Even Harry Kane, a man who often seems like he was media trained in the womb, has squeaked thrillingly, if briefly, to life. Continue reading...

Real Madrid to earn around €15 million after Mario Gila’s move to Milan
Real Madrid academy product Mario Gila is set to sign for AC Milan as Lazio and the rossoneri have already finalized an agreement for the player’s transfer. Milan will pay the Rome-based side €30 million, half of which will go directly to Real Madrid. Real Madrid has brought in a substantial amount of money this summer transfer window through the sales of several academy products. The Spanish club have already earned €60 million from Nico Paz’s transfer to Como, €20 million for Víctor Muñoz, who moved from Osasuna to Liverpool, €12.5 million from Álvaro Rodríguez’s transfer from Elche to Bournemouth and €3.5 million for Mario Martín’s move to Getafe. Real Madrid originally transferred Mario Gila to Lazio in 2022, with the Italian club paying €6 million for 50% of his rights. Los Blancos kept the remaining 50%.

Jorge Andrade backs José Mourinho to thrive in Real Madrid return: “He’s a star”

AFP Photo / Miguel RIOPA (Photo credit should read MIGUEL RIOPA/AFP via Getty Images) | AFP via Getty Images Former Deportivo La Coruña defender Jorge Andrade has thrown his support behind José Mourinho ahead of the Portuguese manager’s return to Real Madrid, praising his influence on coaches and expressing confidence that his second spell at the Santiago Bernabéu will be even more successful than the first. Speaking in an interview with Marca, Andrade described Mourinho as a coaching icon whose impact extends far beyond the trophies he has won. “José Mourinho is a star. He’s our mentor as a coach. He’s given a lot of inspiration to those of us starting out as coaches. Everything he does, his composure, how he interacts with the press, with the fans… It was a triumph for Florentino in his campaign to win the elections.” Andrade believes Mourinho’s experience has only grown since his first stint in Madrid and feels the current circumstances provide the perfect environment for him to reshape the squad after a disappointing campaign. “Mourinho’s second spell at Real Madrid.. It’s a great opportunity. He’s a much more experienced coach now, and he’s going to enjoy it much more than when he first went to Real Madrid. I think he has a golden opportunity to make a lot of changes to the team, since Madrid didn’t win anything last year.” The former Portugal international also highlighted Kylian Mbappé as one of the players Mourinho will be eager to maximize, pointing to the forward’s performances for France at the 2026 World Cup. “He will surely be excited to get Mbappé to do the same things he is doing with France in the World Cup: winning titles and achieving important goals like the Champions League, which for Real Madrid is the most important trophy.” Andrade finished by expressing his pride in seeing two of Portugal’s biggest footballing figures continue to represent the country on the global stage, while joking that he hopes Mourinho wins every match—apart from any against his beloved Deportivo. “Mourinho’s happy like a kid (to return to Real Madrid), huh? He’s a star. I wish him all the best. In Portugal, we’re lucky to have one of the best coaches in the world, like Mourinho, and to have players like Cristiano, who has been top-tier, the best, a Ballon d’Or winner who also played for Real Madrid. It’s very important for us to have them as our standard-bearers. That’s why I’m so excited about Mourinho signing again for Real Madrid and hoping he wins every game… except against Deportivo.”

Marc Cucurella’s Spain knock out Portugal with 90th minute winner
Portugal's midfielder #10 Bernardo Silva and Spain's defender #24 Marc Cucurella fight for the ball during the 2026 World Cup round of 16 football match between Portugal and Spain at the Dallas Stadium in Arlington on July 6, 2026. (Photo by Paul ELLIS / AFP via Getty Images) | AFP via Getty Images Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino was the late hero for Spain as La Roja waited until injury time to break the deadlock with a defence-splitting pass from Ferran Torres and a composed finish from Merino. In defence, Marc Cucurella remained an ever-present feature of this Spain side under Luis de la Fuente, with another full 90 minutes under his belt at left-back. He was tasked with the challenge of handling Chelsea winger Pedro Neto, and was required defensively to support with the handling of Cristiano Ronaldo through the middle in a game of few chances for either side. Spain boasted the best chances, accumulating 1.77 xG over 15 shots, but two thirds of those came from outside the box. Portugal defended well, and also pinned Cucurella back effectively down the left flank. Unlike in previous games, his offensive contributions were limited, with no chances created and no shots, although he did complete three of four crosses. Instead his workload came defensively, with five recoveries and seven clearances, especially amid an onslaught from Portugal late on with new Real Madrid signing Bernardo Silva in the thick of the action with a late headed chance to equalise. Spain will now face either the host nation the United States or Belgium in the quarter-final in Los Angeles on Friday. The winner would then face France or Morocco back in Dallas next Tuesday to fight for a place in the final. Defeat for Portugal means international retirement is imminent for Real Madrid legend Cristiano Ronaldo, while coach Roberto Martinez is also set to depart. Bernardo Silva, benched for this game and used as an 83rd minute substitute, may also have played his last World Cup game for his country.

Welcome to The Daily Merengue! THESE ARE YOUR MODS: Ezek XI, Valyrian Steel, KungFuZizou, NeRObutBlanco, Felipejack, and Juninho bruhhhzil Once again, this is the least talented generation of footballers in general and especially coming from Brazil. Brazilian youths leaving the country should aim for leagues like the dutch league, seria A, La Liga, Portuguese League before considering the EPL. Leagues that give them freedom of expression. The EPL is where they get turned into stale system robots. I’m going to list some components that i believe affects footballers world wide today: 1.) Football is a means to an end to a lot of players in this generation. The thing keeping many going is nothing more than contractual obligations. Some players are happy just being able to pay their bills, live a comfortable life and take care of their families, which is good. But if that is all football is to them, a way to take care of yourself, i think they can do the same with a regular 9-5 office job. They don’t really need football for that. Because as a result, we the fans, will not see many great players in this generation. These days some players keep a straight face when they miss an open goal that could’ve won their team the game. i don’t know if they do that for cameras because nobody wants to wake up tomorrow morning with a picture of themselves crying on the front pages of the tabloids, or if that’s who they really are. Nonchalant. All that “love” talk means nothing when the zeros are on the table. 2.) The lack of Ego is the fall of Pride. Remember the Messi/Ronaldo generation? we used to discuss egos and pride aaallootttt. Some of us even somehow became judges of character with players we don’t know personally. I myself for one am missing players with ambitious egos, who are gunning for the top of world football. This is also the era of “tEaM woRk mAkEs tHe drEaM wOrK”, the number one killer of individual greatness, which has given football a plethora of it’s legends. I miss players who wanted people to know their names. I miss players who wanted to restore or add glory to their nations. I miss players that long after now, they would still be associated with the sport because of their greatness and they wouldn’t go back to normal life and be forgotten. Only to be remembered in their passing. I miss players who took pride in both silencing their critics AAAND Earning the respect of their enemies. The team work system is beautiful when it wins you trophies but dreadful when you lose. There was a time where even when you were losing or lost, you made a mark on your enemies. You had that player/s on the squad that still made you excited for the next game. Now we’ve lost that, when we lose, the players of today can only leave you with rage, disbelief, depression and discontent. Even when they hit good form, you just know not to trust it completely because they can still let you down in a moments notice. 3.) Players have fewer responsibilities. We’re in a time now where everything is shared. So no one really has to give their lives on the pitch for one guy anymore. Probably due to the fact that most teams don’t have that one guy that demands your soul/life force if you want to play with him and be considered an equal alongside him. A great lack of sponsors for individual players plays a major role also. Back when players had lucrative deals from a plethora of companies, they were disciplined in their habits on/off the pitch or at least made sure that it never got to where it could destroy them. Have you noticed that not many of the “big stars” or world class players have a lot of sponsors outside their boot/shoe deals? and maybe one or two random ads they’re in????? many of them aren’t marketable despite their talents and big transfer fee and pay checks. Back then players strove to touch new heights in their own individual strides. Now, alot of the wonder kids dont get better with time, they often get forgotten. and some even find it hard to maintain consistency when at their peak. Many of them dont even have personal coaches that can guide them when they’re not playing club football. Just fewer responsibilities but more salary. I’ll stop here for today, chat to me below!

Real Madrid Basketball sign coach Pedro Martínez
Real Madrid Basketball has appointed Pedro Martínez as its new head coach, following the conclusion of Sergio Scariolo’s one-year tenure. Martínez arrives in the Spanish capital after orchestrating the most successful campaign in Valencia Basket’s history. Under his leadership, Valencia conquered its second Liga ACB championship and secured its first-ever berth in the EuroLeague Final Four. Ironically, their historic European run was halted in the semifinals by Real Madrid. “It is an honor. This is an iconic institution and a storied club. Some of the world’s finest players and coaches have been a part of its history. Evidently, it is a source of pride to join. I understand the legacy and will endeavor to give my utmost to live up to the standard of the professionals who have preceded me here,” said Martínez to Real Madrid TV. The club will be undergoing a rebuild this summer, with Trey Lyles already on his way out of the team while Mario Hezonja could also be leaving the club, according to reports.

Haaland’s father: “Everybody wants to play for Real Madrid”
Erling Haaland’s father Alfie Haaland talked to DAZN ahead of Norway’s match against Brazil in the FIFA World Cup’s Round of 16 and was asked about his son’s chances of ever playing for Real Madrid. “I don’t wanna talk much about elections at other clubs. He’s happy at City, he’s got a long contract… but any player wants to play for Real Madrid,” he said when asked about Enrique Riquelme’s promise to sign him had he been elected as the club’s president. DAZN’s Sergio Quirante insisted and Alfie Haaland didn’t mince words about whether or not his son will ever play in Spain. “Maybe, maybe… There are always opportunities in football. In Spain there are fantastic teams, there are big clubs. You never know, but right now he’s in England and he’s happy,” he added. Haaland ended up scoring two goals and leading Norway to a massive 2-1 upset over Brazil.

His contract is a long one, which is surprising given his age. Either way, he’s a reliable player who will surely play an important role over the next few years.

Bellingham’s Runs Behind: One Of England’s Dangerous Weapons
ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JULY 01: Jude Bellingham of England during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round Of 32 match between England and Congo DR at Atlanta Stadium on July 01, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA/Getty Images) | Getty Images Thomas Tuchel arrived at the World Cup building his England side upon wide connections. The central midfielders, fullbacks, and wingers coordinate via wide rotations, position exchanges, and channel runs. The idea revolves around generating spaces for crosses and cutbacks. According to Opta, only Canada (82) played more crosses than England (75) until the round of 32 in the World Cup. Against DR Congo, Antony Gordon’s cross toward the edge of the six-yard box was the assist that set up Harry Kane well to equalise the result, after many failed attempts to score relying on the same dynamics. One of the few offensive tools that England resorted to against DR Congo’s 4-1-4-1 low block is Bellingham’s late arrivals in the box. 13 minutes in, England looked to move the ball around DR Congo’s block toward Rashford. Meanwhile, Bellingham stealthily dashed diagonally from the right half-space toward the center, waiting to see how the events would develop: With DR Congo’s right winger and right-back dealing with their counterparts, Declan Rice drew Mukau and Moutoussamy’s attention. That opened up the left half-space for Bellingham to dart behind DR Congo’s defensive midfielder. However, Rashford opted to go backward: Three minutes in, Declan Rice and Nico O’Reilly combined down the left half-space, working the ball out to Marcus Rashford. This time, Rashford found Bellingham’s box-crashing run between the center-back and left-back with an inswinging cross. However, the goalkeeper stepped out early to catch the ball. There were times when Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham swapped positions. England’s intentions remained the same: finding situations to deliver crosses. Here, Bellingham would take advantage of the numerical parity England generated on the left. Moreover, he would capitalise on Mbemba being forced to keep his eyes on the ball, which enabled Bellingham to exploit the blindside of DR Congo’s centre-back to receive Rice’s accurate, early cross. However, Bellingham headed the ball to where the goalkeeper stood. The first minute of added time in the first half saw England work the ball from the left to the right. Around the penalty area and the far post zone, Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford distracted Chancel Mbemba and Wan-Bissaka, whereas Axel Tuanzebe focused on the ball. That allowed Bellingham to arrive late into the gap between the center-backs to head Madueke’s inswinging cross. Lionel Mpasi-Nzau, with a heroic reflex, kept his national team ahead. The moments preceding England’s second goal highlighted Bellingham’s main quality. He noticed that Wan-Bissaka maintained his concentration on Gordon, and Kane pinned the center-backs. As a result, he sneaked behind DR Congo’s left central midfielder into the gap between the right-back and center-back, providing Anderson a free option between the lines to access. Bellingham scampered forward down the channel, penetrated the box, and fired a shot into Mpasi’s body. England’s wingers, tucking in, served them well to regain the ball quickly. Gordon would carry across before feeding Harry Kane at the edge of the box. Bayern’s striker entered the box and wrapped his right foot around the ball to power it toward the root of the net, sending his national team to the round of 16. Besides his quality on the ball, Jude Bellingham’s ability to sniff out and interpret the gaps across the opposition backline is what sets him apart from the players in the same position. He proved in his first season with Real Madrid what he can produce once he spots these free pockets. And now in the 2026 World Cup, his late arrivals in the box and runs beyond the defensive lines are another alternative for Thomas Tuchel’s side to rely on for chance creation or scoring goals.

Mbappé breaks the deadlock to send France past Paraguay
04 July 2026, United States, Philadelphia: Soccer, Men, 2026 World Cup, Paraguay vs. France, Knockout Stage, Round of 16, Philadelphia Stadium, Kylian Mbappé (right, France) celebrates after scoring the 0-1 goal. PLEASE NOTE: In accordance with FIFA regulations, these images may be used exclusively for editorial purposes. Commercial use is prohibited. Furthermore, no video-like sequences may be created, and no alterations may be made to the image, either in the foreground or the background. Photo: Tom Weller/dpa (Photo by Tom Weller/picture alliance via Getty Images) France had captain Kylian Mbappé to thanks as he scored his seventh goal of the tournament to put the team ahead against a resilient Paraguay side who had the French team on edge until a 70th minute penalty. VAR was needed to persuade referee Ilgiz Tantashev that Désiré Doué had been tripped by Gustavo Gómez, and Mbappé sent the spot-kick to the bottom-right corner with Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gil diving the wrong way. Paraguay, ranked 41st in the world, arrived after knocking out Germany in one of the biggest shocks of the tournament in the last round, and had conceded only one goal in their last three games since conceding four against host nation the United States. They made life difficult for the French, with Mbappé not registering a single shot until a speculative effort from 30 yards went well over the bar on 64 minutes. His next effort was his first on target as he converted from the spot. The penalty was in fact only his third touch in the opposition box and he only had one more penalty box involvement with a a shot and rebound on 96 minutes. That reflected a game in which France produced 1.36 xG, their lowest xG in a competitive fixture since a 3-1 UEFA Nations League loss to Italy in September 2024 19 competitive games ago. In a heated affair, Mbappé was targeted by Paraguayan defenders, veteran Gustavo Velázquez proving to be the most physical as he swung a boot in his direction after a tackle, going unpunished. Despite the attention from his opponents, Mbappé was only awarded two free-kicks and was visibly laughing with his rough man-markers by the time the game was coming to a close in injury time. However, his goal means that France are through and he is back on level pegging with Argentina star Lionel Messi in the race for the golden boot with seven goals each. Mbappé was the only one of three Real Madrid players in the squad to start, as Didier Deschamps opted to bring in Roma’s Kouadio Koné in place of Aurélien Tchouameni in midfield as he was not risked due to a minor thigh injury. New signing Ibrahima Konaté remained on the bench, with the defender having played 14 minutes of the competition so far. France are now into the quarter-final stage, where they will face Morocco in Boston on Thursday. The winner of that game then faces a semi-final against the victor of a quarter-final which will be played between either Spain or Portugal and one of the United States or Belgium.

Tchouameni out against Paraguay with thigh injury
Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni will miss France’s match against Paraguay in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup, according to reports from the French press. Those same reports suggest that Tchouameni will need at least one week to properly recover from his injury, which means that he would be ‘questionable’ for the next game if Les Bleus advance to the Quarterfinals. Tchouameni is an undisputed starter for the French national team, so this is a significant injury for them. However, it’s clear that they should still have enough to take care of business against Paraguay, even if the South American team already managed to beat Germany in the last round. The winner of this match between France and Paraguay will face either Canada or Morocco, so Tchouameni’s physical condition will be worth monitoring over the next few days.

Real Madrid, Vinicius will meet after FIFA World Cup to discuss contract negotiations -report
Real Madrid’s board and Vinicius Júnior will discuss a contract extension after the current FIFA World Cup, according to a report published on MARCA. The Brazilian attacker is on a expiring deal, which means that he would be free to negotiate a new contract with any club in the world next January if he doesn’t reach an agreement with Real Madrid before then. The player wants a significant salary raise and Real Madrid haven’t been willing to match those demands, according to reports in the Spanish press. Vinicius has leverage now, as the club will want to avoid losing the Brazilian star as a free agent. If the two parts can’t reach an agreement after the World Cup, Real Madrid could eventually explore the market for him.

Zamorano: “I’d play with Olise, Mbappé, Vinicius, and I’d bring in Enzo”
MILAN, ITALY - SEPTEMBER 23: Ivan Zamorano poses for a portrait in the photo booth prior to The Best FIFA Football Awards 2019 at Excelsior Hotel Gallia on September 23, 2019 in Milan, Italy. (Photo by Michael Regan - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images) | FIFA via Getty Images Former Real Madrid striker Iván Zamorano is confident Los Blancos will return stronger next season after a disappointing campaign, expressing optimism about the club’s transfer business while also highlighting Vinicius Jr’s outstanding performances for Brazil at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Speaking in an interview with Marca, Zamorano said he expects Real Madrid to continue strengthening the squad before the transfer window closes and believes the club will once again compete for both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League. “I see Real Madrid with optimism next season. We’ve had two bad seasons, but I think the reinforcements that have been mentioned this year seem interesting. I’m sure someone else will arrive after this World Cup. Real Madrid has to try to build a competitive team, a team that fights not only for the Spanish league title but also for the Champions League because we’re used to that. It’s hard to imagine Real Madrid not winning anything for two years. I see it with a lot of optimism and with the possibility that next season will be very different from what we’ve experienced this year.” Zamorano also reserved special praise for Vinicius Jr, who he believes has been Brazil’s standout player during the tournament. The Chilean said the Real Madrid winger best represents the traditional identity of Brazilian football and has carried the national team throughout the competition. “I’m enjoying Vinicius Jr’s World Cup so far. If there’s one standout player Brazil has, it’s Vinicius. If we’re talking purely about Brazilian football identity, there’s no player who embodies it more than Vinicius. I could also mention Neymar, but he hasn’t played. I think Vinicius has been carrying the team’s weight completely, so it’s been a very positive World Cup.” Looking ahead to Real Madrid’s future, Zamorano believes the club’s project should revolve around Vinicius and Kylian Mbappé, while also emphasizing the importance of restoring balance throughout the squad after what he viewed as an uneven campaign. “We have two world-class strikers in Vinicius and Mbappe, and there’s no doubt the team must be built around that. Last year there was an imbalance between the attackers, the midfield, and the defense. While that’s true, we have to take advantage of having two world-class strikers and the possibility of adding another. We also need to find a balance by bringing in central defenders, all-around midfielders, and not relying so heavily on two monsters like Vinicius and Mbappé. We also need to try to create a very compact team from the forwards back.” The former forward also revealed two players he would target in the transfer market if he were building Real Madrid’s squad, naming Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise and Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández as ideal additions. “I’d buy Olise tomorrow! And I’d play with Olise, Mbappé, Vinicius, and I’d bring in Enzo Fernández and put him in midfield. We already have a right-back, a center-back… so with that we’d have a great team.”

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY TO the United States of America. Now it’s time for Belgium to sneak past them and get eliminated in the next round. REFEREE REVIEW So far the refereeing has been top notch, minus a few hiccups here and there. I love that Refs are no longer stopping play for fouls, even though players still roll on the floor and act like they got shot. Play still continues, and immediately they get up like nothing happened. Sign that they’re not as hurt as they behave. Even if there’s legit pain, they make it look much worse. Real Madrid have 'no intention' of signing Fernandez
Real Madrid say they have "no intention" of trying to sign Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea this summer.

OFFICIAL: Real Madrid deny interest in Enzo Fernández
Just like they did a few days ago with Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise, Real Madrid have published an official statement denying any sort of contacts over Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández. In light of the information and statements that have emerged in recent days regarding an alleged interest from Real Madrid C. F. in the player Enzo Fernández, the club wishes to state that it has not made any efforts, either directly or indirectly, aimed at signing the aforementioned player and, furthermore, has no intention of pursuing such an operation. Real Madrid wishes to express its utmost respect for Enzo Fernández, a great footballer whose career and quality are widely recognized, as well as for Chelsea FC, a club with which it maintains an excellent institutional relationship. Precisely out of respect for an institution like Chelsea FC and the principles of institutional loyalty that have always guided Real Madrid’s actions, the club considers it necessary to categorically deny these speculations, which are unfounded and do not reflect reality. Real Madrid regrets that, despite the clarity of the facts and the absence of any action by the club, information continues to be disseminated that does not correspond to reality and only serves to create confusion among fans and unnecessarily harm the entities and individuals involved. Source: Realmadrid.com Enzo’s own agent Javier Pastore talked to AS today and said that Real Madrid like the player, so Los Blancos are very clearly trying to repair any wrongdoing.

Enzo Fernández’s agent: “Real Madrid like him and he likes Real Madrid”
Enzo Fernández’s agent and former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Javier Pastore talked to AS about his client and delivered some interesting quotes. “Yeah, Real Madrid’s been rumored. Real Madrid likes the best players, and Enzo has been one of the best players this year. He’s a player Real Madrid likes, and he likes Real Madrid, just like he likes other clubs that are out there. Now we have to wait a little bit,” said Pastore. Enzo’s agent also explained that he’s trying to find a new club for his client. “Chelsea are known for snagging a lot of young talent and tossing them into the Premier League, just like they did with Enzo. Everyone’s got their own journey and path. He’s done really well at Chelsea. Won titles in three and a half years. He’s happy as a clam, but then comes that point where you gotta follow the player’s lead, and if he’s asking for stuff the club can’t deliver, well, then you gotta find some solutions. We’re looking for them now but I’ve also been trying to put a stop to everything right now because there’s so much going on with the World Cup. Enzo needs to enjoy it, but a player’s head is everywhere. On social media and with all the streaming out there, they drop so much news or similar stuff, which isn’t for him to be hearing. At this moment, I prefer he’s concentrated on trying to win another World Cup. There will be time to talk later,” he added. It looks like Enzo Fernández is on his way out of Chelsea, so this saga could be one of the main headlines of this summer’s transfer window.

Manzambi dazzles as Switzerland cruise into last 16 with win over Algeria
No wonder Newcastle United are working overtime to wrap up a deal for Johan Manzambi. The secret, if indeed it ever existed, is well and truly out when it comes to the 20-year-old Freiburg forward who destroyed the Algeria defence to tee up Breel Embolo for Switzerland’s opener in an ominously comfortable victory to reach the last 16. Granit Xhaka, as any good captain would, has tried to keep a lid on soaring expectations, but doing so just got that bit tougher after the Swiss recorded victory in a knockout game at the World Cup for the first time since 1938. “He’s had a great tournament, keep your eyes on him,” came the pre-match message from the stadium announcer accompanying images of Manzambi limbering up on the giant cuboid screen dangling from the roof. The same display detailed Manzambi as sixth in Fifa’s jazzy power rankings for attacking, behind a star-studded cast led by Kylian Mbappé and including Michael Olise, Erling Haaland and Harry Kane. Algeria, however, did not heed the warning. Continue reading...

Bernardo Silva comes off the bench in Portugal’s win vs Croatia
TORONTO, ONTARIO - JULY 02: Cristiano Ronaldo #7 of Portugal celebrates with Bernardo Silva #10 after a 2-1 win during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 match between Portugal and Croatia at Toronto Stadium on July 02, 2026 in Toronto, Ontario. (Photo by Dan Mullan/Getty Images) | Getty Images Bernardo Silva came off the bench in the second half to help Portugal come back to win their round-of-32 tie against Croatia on Thursday night. In one of the best games of the entire World Cup, Portugal were 2-1 victors against Luka Modric’s team in what was a controversial, nail-biting affair. Former Real Madrid player Cristiano Ronaldo scored the equaliser — and also had a brilliant goal marginally disallowed — while Modric and Mateo Kovacic were far and away the best players on the pitch for their country. Portugal went ahead through Goncalo Ramos’ header, and then conceded a late goal which was controversially ruled out for offside. Silva came on to play alongside Joao Neves and then Ruben Neves in the 62nd minute, and recorded 17 touches. He completed eight of his 11 passes, had one clearance and two recoveries. The new Real Madrid signing did not have much to do as, after Portugal’s goal, Croatia dominated the ball for long stretches. Portugal will now play Spain in the next round of the tournament.

Real Madrid to earn around €17 million after Álvaro Rodríguez’s move to Bournemouth
Real Madrid product Álvaro Rodríguez is set to complete his signing for Bournemouth and Los Blancos will earn around €17 million for that move, according to reports in the Spanish press. Given that Los Blancos still owned 50% of Álvaro’s rights, Real Madrid is set to receive €12.5 million for the transfer, with an additional €2.5 million contingent on performance-related objectives. This, combined with the €2 million from his initial transfer to Elche could bring the total revenue to approximately €17 million. This is not the first such transfers for Real Madrid. This summer, the club has taken advantage of deals like that of Victor Muñoz, for whom Liverpool paid €40 million, with half of that fee going to Madrid.

Real Madrid and Manchester City negotiating Camavinga deal -report
Real Madrid have been trying to find a landing spot for French midfielder Eduardo Camavinga and Manchester City are considering the possibility and discussing a potential deal for him, according to a report published last night on MARCA. José Mourinho has given the green light to Camavinga’s departure. The French midfielder has not performed at a high level for the last two seasons and Los Blancos are ready to move on and find a decent deal for him now that his value is still somewhat high, per that same report. Manchester City are looking for deals to improve their midfield line and are reportedly leading the race to sign World Cup sensation Ayyoub Bouaddi. If Real Madrid end up selling Camavinga, they would need to use that money on a different midfielder.

The decision, issued on June 24, confirms an earlier judgment by the High Court of Justice of Madrid (TSJM), which upheld a lower court’s ruling annulling the concession for the construction of parking facilities planned for areas around the stadium, including Padre Damián and Paseo de la Castellana. According to the Supreme Court, Real Madrid’s appeal did not raise any new legal questions that warranted further review, noting that the issues presented have already been addressed through established case law from both the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court itself. One of the club’s principal arguments was that it had been placed at a procedural disadvantage because it was not personally notified as a co-defendant during the initial proceedings. The Supreme Court rejected that claim, agreeing with the TSJM’s conclusion that Real Madrid had sufficient knowledge of the legal challenge through other means, meaning the absence of formal notification did not invalidate the process. The court also ruled that much of Real Madrid’s appeal attempted to revisit factual findings and the evaluation of evidence—issues that fall outside the purpose of a cassation appeal, which is intended to resolve legal questions and ensure consistent interpretation of the law rather than reassess the facts of a case. Other arguments presented by the club, including challenges to the standing of the Neighborhood Association of Those Affected by the Bernabéu and whether the municipal authorization could itself be challenged, were likewise dismissed. The Supreme Court stated that these matters have already been settled through existing legal doctrine or had been introduced too late in the proceedings. The ruling also endorses the TSJM’s position that Madrid City Council’s authorization issued on March 10, 2023, produced significant legal effects by initiating the contracting process, making it a decision that could legally be contested. As part of the ruling, Real Madrid has been ordered to pay the legal costs associated with the admission phase of the appeal, capped at €2,000 plus any applicable VAT. The decision is final and cannot be appealed. The legal dispute originated from a lawsuit filed by a neighborhood association, which argued that the approval process for the parking concession failed to comply with the legally required administrative procedures. Residents also claimed the proposed projects violated Madrid’s urban planning regulations governing garages and parking facilities. Earlier courts agreed with those concerns, finding that both the feasibility study submitted by Real Madrid and the subsequent economic-financial study prepared by Madrid City Council underwent substantial changes after the public consultation period. Those modifications were never reopened for public review before the concession process continued, a key factor in the courts’ decisions to invalidate the project.

Bayern president: “Florentino Pérez can save himself the effort because we don’t want to sell Olise”
Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer talked to German newspaper Abendzeitung and was asked about the rumors suggesting that Real Madrid will try to sign Michael Olise this summer. “Like I’ve said before, if Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez has an offer in mind, he can save himself the effort because we don’t want to sell Michael Olise. At Bayern Munich, we have a very good relationship with Real Madrid, and as a consequence of that, they contacted me to say, first of all, they have absolutely no contact with Michael Olise, and secondly, they don’t want all this constant media speculation,” he said. Real Madrid themselves denied any sort of contacts with Olise’s camp via an official statement published days ago. Olise would be a perfect fit for Real Madrid, but it seems that it won’t be easy to convince Bayern of selling him unless the player himself somehow forces his way out of the club.

Cesar Palacios wants to convince Mourinho amid growing transfer interest
According to Diario AS, one of Real Madrid Castilla’s brightest prospects has changed representation, leaving Stellar to join Best of You as he prepares for what could be a defining preseason under Jose Mourinho. Palacios is determined to earn a place in the first team. With Dani Ceballos gone and Real Madrid no longer pursuing the return of Nico Paz, the 21-year-old believes there is a genuine opportunity to establish himself in Mourinho’s squad. Palacios, whose contract expires next summer, will take part in preseason with the senior side. A return to Castilla is no longer considered an option. The midfielder has attracted interest from clubs across Europe’s top five leagues, including Athletic Club and several Premier League sides. Former Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa, now at Fulham, could also offer a potential pathway if Palacios leaves Spain. However, AS reports that the player’s priority remains convincing Mourinho. The attacking midfielder enjoyed his breakthrough under Arbeloa, making seven first-team appearances across La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League. Real Madrid reportedly remain convinced of Palacios’ long-term potential. Should he leave, the club would likely structure any deal similarly to those involving Nico Paz or Víctor Muñoz, retaining significant control over his future.

Manchester City leading the race to sign Bouaddi -report
Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi has been the breakout star of the current 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Moroccan midfielder has received interest from four clubs and Manchester City are leading the race to sign him away from Lille, according to a report from Fabrizio Romano. City could secure his signing and then allow the midfielder to stay at Lille for another season, per that same report. Real Madrid had been linked with Bouaddi since the start of the World Cup, and a potential interest in the midfielder would make a ton of sense since his profile fits what Los Blancos have been desperately needing for quite some time. If Bouaddi keeps playing at this level, other clubs like Paris Saint-Germain will likely enter the race to sign him as well. Madrid have yet to confirm their interest, but president Florentino Pérez has always paid close attention to previous editions of the World Cup.

Thiago Pitarch draws interest from Málaga -report
Real Madrid midfielder Thiago Pitarch could be headed to Málaga on a loan deal, according to a report from BeSoccer. The Spanish midfielder emerged as a first-team player this previous season but the club is exploring deals to clubs where he could continue his development while getting consistent, relevant minutes. A deal with Málaga makes sense for all parts involved. The Andalusian side have just made their return to LaLiga after beating Almería in the Playoffs, so Pitarch could get quality minutes in a Primera División side. Either way, a deal is not expected to happen until José Mourinho makes a decision about Pitarch. Ceballos’ departure combined with a potential Camavinga exit could mean that the Portuguese coach finds Pitarch valuable, so Madrid will likely wait a few weeks before trying to complete a loan deal for the Spanish midfielder.

DEATH OF SYSTEM FOOTBALL | OPEN THREAD | JUNE 30, 2026
Welcome to The Daily Merengue! THESE ARE YOUR MODS: Ezek XI, Valyrian Steel, KungFuZizou, NeRObutBlanco, Felipejack, and Juninho LEAST TALENTED This is the least talented generation of footballers we’re seeing world wide. Due to the lack of generational players, teams have adopted what they hope to be a generational system. Generational players are much harder to find and afford financially, than it is to adopt a cheap system. There’s no doubt that system football rules the world. I believe it’s primarily because having a system is more attainable than having a squad of prime, individually talented players. In a system, even the weakest can be given a significant role to play and players can be swapped in/out on an as-needed basis. There really isn’t a stand out player in system football, just stand out moments. And alot of the glory that comes with a successful implementation of system football that wins trophies, goes to the coach these days, more so than the player/s. Only problem is that system football does not have an answer to a Low Block. LOW BLOCK A very disciplined low block can make system football useless and drive the most tactically brilliant and advanced coach mad, any day of the week. It can often take a moment of individual brilliance to breakthrough a low block when system football is in play. BRING BACK INDIVIDUAL BRILLIANCE AGAIN We need to bring back individual brilliance again in team football. Build entire teams around players again. PSG are the most successful team in football as of today. But does that mean I’m going to agree that Luis Enrique’s style of football is watchable and world football should adopt it??? HELLLL NOOOO!!! I’LL GLADLY PASS!! System football plus team player mindset has given us some of the overall worst football we’ve ever seen in the last decade. And this is what we call “Modern Football” YUCK!! I’m not saying players should be ultra selfish, no. But I’m sure you saw Vinicius solo run against Japan that almost ended in a goal, right?. That was a moment of pure beauty and brilliance that made you feel alive watching the sport. When that happened, you woke up if you were sleeping from the snooze fest of endless sideways passes and switching of plays that both teams were doing. which just dragged play till there was a last minute winner. I absolutely loathe watching such nonsense. No wonder when the “world class” player on the team touches the ball, the endocrines in your brain don’t get active because they’ve been put to death by the 1001 passes you watched get completed, before the first goal came. There’s alot that the sport has lost, not because of FIFA and their strange regulations, but because a negative style of play has been accepted and adopted world wide. System football isn’t used because it’s the best, it’s used more because it’s affordable. GERMANY ARE OUT, SPAIN IS NEXT Argentina will exit the world cup also. All these teams are frail.

What does the Nico Paz deal with Como mean for Real Madrid?
ARLINGTON, UNITED STATES - JUNE 28: Nico Paz of Argentina, Lionel Messi of Argentina during the Group J: FIFA World Cup 2026 match between Jordan and Argentina at Dallas Stadium on June 28, 2026 in Arlington, Texas. (Photo by Pablo Morano/BSR Agency/Getty Images) | Getty Images Nico Paz to Como is Official Now. At one point, it seemed the announcement could drag on for a couple more weeks. However, Real Madrid possibly did Nico Paz a favour by announcing it before Argentina’s knockout run in the World Cup, so that the player could put his transfer uncertainty behind him. All kinds of figures have been discussed in the media surrounding this deal. It is rumoured that Real Madrid have sold the Argentine youngster to Como for 60 million euros. But Madrid will have a chance to bring him back for a figure around 80 million euros in the summer of 2027-28. While the figure has been kept a secret officially, Los Blancos have directly mentioned it in their official announcement that a return is possible in 2027-28. One might simply this as the following – Real Madrid had a 10 million euros buy-back clause for Nico Paz this summer. It basically got raised to 20 million next summer. It is not a bad deal for either party in theory. If Real Madrid can make room for the player, and he keeps his trajectory in the same direction next season, a net transfer fee of 20 million might seem like a bargain. If Real Madrid do not intend to bring him back, do they have any control over the player’s future, even financially, beyond 2027-28? Well, we do not have an official word on it yet. But time will tell.

OFFICIAL: Como sign Nico Paz
Real Madrid have announced their decision to sell Nico Paz to Como. Real Madrid C.F., Como 1907, and Nico Paz have reached an agreement for the player to remain at the Italian club for the 2026-2027 season. This agreement, which has been made at the player’s own request, also provides that Real Madrid retains a unilateral buy-back option for Nico Paz’s federative rights for the 2027-2028 season. Source: Realmadrid.com Los Blancos are confirming that Paz wanted to stay there for another year, while also announcing that the club keeps a buy-back option which will need to be triggered next summer. Apparently, Madrid will need to spend around €80 million to bring Nico Paz back to the Spanish capital.

Real Madrid open to loaning Raul Asencio with mandatory purchase clause
MADRID, SPAIN - MAY 23: Raul Asencio of Real Madrid CF controls a ball during the LaLiga EA Sports match between Real Madrid CF and Athletic Club at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on May 23, 2026 in Madrid, Spain. (Photo by Diego Souto/Getty Images) | Getty Images Real Madrid are prepared to part ways with RaUl Asencio this summer as the club continues reshaping the squad ahead of Jose Mourinho’s return. According to Miguel Serrano, Asencio has slipped down the center-back pecking order following the arrival of Ibrahima Konaté, with another defensive signing still a possibility. As a result, Madrid believe the 23-year-old would struggle for regular first-team minutes next season. The report states that Los Blancos are now open to sanctioning a loan move, but only if the agreement includes a mandatory purchase option at the end of the 2026-27 campaign. Real Madrid reportedly view such a deal as the best solution for all parties, allowing Asencio to play consistently while securing a future transfer fee. For now, interest in the defender remains limited, which has prompted Madrid to soften their stance. An initial loan is expected to be more attractive to potential suitors than a permanent transfer. Despite the lack of concrete offers, it would be a surprise if Asencio remained at the Santiago Bernabéu beyond this summer, with the club determined to create space in Mourinho’s squad and the defender needing regular football at this stage of his career.

Michael Olise to hold talks with Bayern as Real Madrid continue to monitor situation
FOXBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS - JUNE 26: Michael Olise of France in action during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group I match between Norway and France at Boston Stadium on June 26, 2026 in Foxborough, United States. (Photo by Sathire Kelpa/Eurasia Sport Images/Getty Images) | Getty Images Michael Olise has emerged as one of the standout players at the 2026 World Cup, and his future is once again becoming a talking point across Europe. According to Diario AS, the Bayern Munich winger plans to meet with club officials after the tournament to discuss his future and better understand his standing within the club following two outstanding seasons in Germany. Olise reportedly wants clarity on Bayern’s long-term plans before making any decisions. The report adds that several of Europe’s biggest clubs are monitoring the situation, including Premier League sides, Paris Saint-Germain, and Real Madrid. While Real Madrid publicly denied making an approach for the French international, AS maintains that Olise is a player the club “likes very much.” Olise and his representatives reportedly want “to sit down calmly after the World Cup, analyze everything and see what position to adopt after the dramatic change in his situation over the last few months.” Bayern are aware the meeting is coming and, according to the report, have begun to accept that “anything can happen,” despite remaining confident given Olise’s long-term contract. AS also claims Bayern believe the 24-year-old has been “seduced by everything he has been hearing in recent weeks,” with the club waiting to hear his intentions first-hand before the summer market fully unfolds. Should Olise become available, Real Madrid are expected to remain one of the clubs closely monitoring developments.

Valencia want Joan Martínez on a loan deal -report
Real Madrid prospect Joan Martínez has received interest from Valencia, who want to add some depth to their defensive line. Valencia would be interested in signing Martínez on a loan deal where they would keep an option to buy the Spanish center-back, according to a report published on MARCA. If Valencia were to trigger that potential option to buy the player, Madrid would always keep another clause to buy him back, per that same report. Martínez will turn 19 years old this summer and it looks like he could be intrigued by the possibility of playing minutes in LaLiga. He was born in Alginet, just a few miles away from Valencia, so this deal could make sense for all parts involved as Real Madrid also want him to keep developing and improving as a player. Either way, Martínez doesn’t seem to be an option for the first team this year, so Real Madrid could ultimately try to find him a new club.

Betis remain interested in Fran García, Real Madrid want €10 million -report
Real Madrid left-back Fran García is almost certainly going to be leaving the club this summer and Betis remain interested in his signing, with Los Blancos wanting a fee of around €10 million, according to a report published today on AS. With Marc Cucurella, Álvaro Carreras and Ferland Mendy already on the roster, Real Madrid simply have too many options at the left-back spot and Fran García’s value in the market is simply higher than Mendy, given that the Frenchman has been struggling with injuries for several years now. In that context, García is the odd man out and he will almost certainly leave the club this summer. Cucurella will be Mourinho’s starting left-back this year, with Carreras competing with him for minutes. Mendy can’t be relied upon but could play some minutes down the road if he recovers well from his current injury.

Nico Paz’s Father Explains The Buy-back With Como

(Photo by Stefan Koops/EYE4IMAGES/NurPhoto via Getty Images) | NurPhoto via Getty Images Nico Paz will remain at Como for another season. His father and agent, Pablo Paz, explained that both the player and Real Madrid believe continued development in Serie A is the right path. Speaking to Flashscore, Pablo Paz revealed that while Real Madrid were keen on bringing the midfielder back, all parties ultimately agreed that another year in Italy—where Como will compete in the Champions League—would benefit his long-term growth. “It was a difficult decision because Real Madrid really wanted him, but they also felt that another season in Italy, with the possibility of playing in the Champions League, would be the best option for his development. If the buy-back clause is exercised, he can return to Madrid in the future,” Pablo Paz said. The former Argentina international also confirmed that the agreement is not yet fully finalized, with a few contractual details still to be resolved before everything is completed. “There are still some details to be defined and adjusted, such as the price. Nico is happy because he feels very comfortable in Como and is very valued there.” Beyond football, Pablo Paz emphasized the positive environment his son has found since arriving in Italy, highlighting the importance of feeling appreciated away from the pitch. “He has been received in the best way and is treated with great affection in every way. The human side is also very important and that makes him feel at ease.”

Real Madrid want to sell Camavinga for €60 million -report
Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga is on the transfer block and Los Blancos want at least €60 million to sell him, according to a report from AS. However, that same report states that the French player is not interested in leaving the club, which could derail the situation. Once viewed as an integral part of Real Madrid’s future, Camavinga’s last two seasons with the club have not been positive and his value in the market has declined. Clubs like Inter Milan or PSG could still try to sign him if the Frenchman ends up giving the green light. New coach José Mourinho will play an important role in this saga. If Camavinga doesn’t earn his spot, the Portuguese coach will likely be the one letting him know that it would be better for him to find a new club.

Bernardo Silva stays on the bench in Portugal’s 0-0 draw with Colombia
HOUSTON, TEXAS - JUNE 23: Bernardo Silva of Portugal looks on during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group K match between Portugal and Uzbekistan at Houston Stadium on June 23, 2026 in Houston, Texas. (Photo by Europa Press Sports/Europa Press via Getty Images) | Europa Press via Getty Images Real Madrid’s new signing Bernardo Silva did not feature in Portugal’s 0-0 draw against Colombia in their final group stage game of the World Cup. Ruben Neves and Vitinha started in midfield, while Pedro Neto took the place occupied by Silva in the first game. It was one of the most entertaining goalless draws in recent history, where both teams looked to be close to scoring on essentially every attack. Colombia had a goal disallowed late into the second half by a matter of inches, and there were some big Portugal chances that went just wide as well. It was a very entertaining game, although not as much for the players themselves – especially Silva, who would have wanted to return to the starting XI. As a result, Portugal have now finished the group stage with five points. They are two points behind Colombia at second place in their group, meaning they would face Croatia in the next round.

Colombia take top spot over Portugal after draw in battle of World Cup heavyweights
While wonderful and typical theatre, it was plainly ridiculous. “I’m back!” roared Cristiano Ronaldo, as if playing a key part in Portugal’s dismissal of Uzbekistan was in any way significant. Ronaldo toiled against DR Congo and was comfortably kept quiet here by Colombia. The stars have turned up at this World Cup. Ronaldo, though, still has a way to go if seeking to prove his omnipresence at this tournament will not hinder Portuguese hopes of glory. Nobody other than Father Time has chased down Ronaldo. An alternative quote, from Trainspotting, feels more apposite than what the 41-year-old bawled into a camera as Uzbekistan were swatted aside. “Well, at one time, you’ve got it, then you lose it, and it’s gone for ever,” observed Sick Boy in an Edinburgh park. Add Ronaldo to a list that, as per the film scene, includes David Bowie, Lou Reed, Charlie Nicholas and Malcolm McLaren. Eclectic company. Ronaldo actually wants to be in the same discussion as Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland. He once was. Now? It is a tricky point to enforce. Continue reading...

England’s creaky defence is a World Cup worry and they need Rice back firing | Jacob Steinberg
Win over Panama failed to disguise deficiencies at the back and Tuchel’s men will not survive against a top side by going gung-ho Does anyone know what happened to the low block? After all the talk about the challenges of breaking down a grim back seven, the bigger worry for Thomas Tuchel in New Jersey was Panama’s lack of fear. There was no sign of the underdogs borrowing from the Carlos Queiroz playbook against an anxious England, who are starting to give off the distinct whiff of a team whose World Cup is destined to end in a calamity of some sort in the knockouts. Make no mistake: England will be going home if they continue to defend like this against anyone with a functioning attack. Tuchel will not be fooled. Although his team secured top spot in Group L by wearing down Panama in the end, an achievement mainly down to Jude Bellingham again stepping up with two moments of class after a skittish first half, England were far from convincing and spent long spells demonstrating that anyone who thought an unusually gung-ho lineup would provide a vision of a post-Declan Rice world was sorely mistaken. Real Madrid have had issues with injuries for quite some time and this season was no exception. Early this year, there was also some controversy around Mbappé’s knee injury after the French striker wasn’t diagnosed properly and had to travel to France to visit a different doctor and run some more tests on his knee. Los Blancos have not named a replacement yet and it will be interesting to see if that new doctor can actually improve the players’ ability to stay healthy.

Spain clinch first place in their group as Marc Cucurella features in win over Uruguay
ZAPOPAN, MEXICO - JUNE 26: Marc Cucurella #24 of Spain is challenged by Agustin Canobbio #14 of Uruguay during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match between Uruguay and Spain at Guadalajara Stadium on June 26, 2026 in Zapopan, Mexico. (Photo by Manuel Velasquez - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images) | FIFA via Getty Images Marc Cucurella completed the 90 minutes for Spain as they wrapped up the group stages with a narrow 1-0 win over Uruguay to end Group H with La Roja in first place. The left-back is one of only four players to have played every minute so far for Spain alongside central defensive pairing Aymeric Laporte and Pau Cubarsí and goalkeeper Unai Simón. This was Cucurella’s quietest game yet in the tournament. He had no real moments of note, looking secure defensively, winning both of his duels and containing Fluminense winger Agustín Canobbio with ease. The Uruguayan was then sent off in the final moments of injury time for a late sliding tackle on Cubarsí as tensions rose. In attack, Cucurella’s energy and momentum was not needed as much as in previous games, with Spain reserving energy and happy to avoid taking risks. Where he recorded 5.5 touches in the opposition box on average against Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia, he did not have any in Guadalajara against Uruguay. The winning goal came shortly before half-time when Aglético Madrid playmaker Álex Baena hit a hopeful shot from the edge of the box and it squirmed past experienced Uruguayan goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, who was hooked minutes later at half-time. Also involved for Luis de la Fuente’s team was La Fábrica product Marcos Llorente, who returned to the side at right-back having been rested for the 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia. He took the place of Tottenham’s Pedro Porro as he lost his plac and claimed the assist for Baena’s goal with a simple pass. The wait also continues for former Castilla winger and recent Liverpool signing Víctor Muñoz, who is handling a hamstring injury and is yet to feature in the tournament. On the other side of the field, Uruguay were captained by Fede Valverde, despite reports of a clash and falling out with coach Marcelo Bielsa this week regarding the approach to this game. Defeat here means that Uruguay will return home to Montevideo without winning any of their three group stage fixtures. The result tees Spain up for a knock-out tie against the runners-up in Group J, which will be the winner of Austria or Algeria, with David Alaba’s Austria set to take that place in the case of a draw. That game will take place at in Los Angeles on Thursday.

Thomas Tuchel searches for solutions to overcome Panama’s low block
England head coach has selection dilemmas, not helped by Rice and James being doubts, after a series of poor performances against deep defences In an ideal world, the only selection conundrum before England face Panama would be whether to rest Harry Kane or let the striker use a dead rubber against Group L’s fourth seeds as a chance to keep up with Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappé and the other Golden Boot contenders. Yet any hope Tuchel had of giving the reserves a run out in New Jersey surely disappeared when his side drew 0-0 with Ghana on Tuesday and failed to win the group with a game to spare. Now complications remain. The schedule is brutal for England, who face a potential run of four games in 13 days, and Tuchel has a dilemma. This, after all, was surely the one that Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney had marked down as a rare day off for Kane. But England still have to clinch top spot, so weighing up whether to get Kane to ease off before the last 32 is not as big a concern for Tuchel as working out how much of a risk to take with his rotation. During his acceptance speech, Riquelme drew inspiration from the Real Madrid anthem, explaining that its message reflects the principles he strives to live by both personally and professionally. “The Real Madrid anthem speaks of ‘veterans and newcomers’ who always look upon their laurels ‘with respect and emotion.’ That phrase perfectly encapsulates what I aspire to represent: respect for history and ambition for the future, combining experience and youthful talent, without ever losing class, whether winning or not at first. Life has shown me that great battles aren’t won solely with talent or resources; they are won when fought with solid values and the certainty that one is on the right side of history. When one builds from that foundation, with education, humility, and class, victory—the one that truly matters—eventually arrives, even if it sometimes takes longer than we would like.” Riquelme also addressed the support he has received, saying it represents recognition for a philosophy centered around integrity rather than success alone. “The support at the polls? It is a tribute to a way of understanding life and business based on education, dignity, and class in every decision we make. Values that I am honored to have associated with my name. I have always believed that education is not just an academic stage, but a permanent attitude: how we listen, how we disagree, how we treat those who think differently. Dignity and class have nothing to do with status, but with how one behaves when no one is watching, with respect for one’s word, and with elegance in dealing with people.” The businessman also briefly referenced his growing involvement with Real Madrid, describing it as his newest challenge while emphasizing that his principles remain unchanged regardless of the field. “I try to apply my values in every new adventure I undertake. The latest of these adventures is related to Real Madrid. I must remain consistent with my principles in business, in sports, and in any project that life presents me.”

Rüdiger keeps focus on Germany despite Mourinho excitement: “Let’s think about the World Cup”
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - JUNE 25: Antonio Rudiger #2 of Germany during the second half of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group E Match between Germany and Ecuador on June 25, 2026 at New York/New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. (Photo by Rich Graessle/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) | Icon Sportswire via Getty Images Antonio Rüdiger has reiterated that his immediate focus remains on Germany’s World Cup campaign despite the growing excitement surrounding José Mourinho’s arrival at Real Madrid. Speaking to DAZN following Germany’s 2-1 defeat to Ecuador, the veteran defender was asked about the prospect of finally working under Mourinho next season. Rather than getting carried away by the anticipation, Rüdiger made it clear that the World Cup is his priority before turning his attention back to club football. “Excited about Mourinho? Let’s think about the World Cup and then I’m going to be with my dad.” While Rüdiger kept his answer brief after Germany’s defeat, he had spoken at greater length about Mourinho earlier this week, revealing just how eager he is to begin working with the Portuguese coach after years of near misses. “I can’t say too much, but I can say that I’m incredibly excited. Finally, I’m going to play under him. In the past, there were many conversations with him, but for some reason, it never came to fruition. That’s why I’m even happier to welcome him to us now.” The 33-year-old also reflected on a difficult 2025-26 campaign, admitting that injuries made it one of the toughest periods of his career before he fought his way back to full fitness. “I had a difficult year last year, especially physically. I had to fight a lot with injuries and I managed to come back.” Rüdiger’s perseverance was rewarded with a new Real Madrid contract through 2027, and the German international emphasized that remaining at the Santiago Bernabéu was always his objective. “Real Madrid is practically my home. I feel very good there, my family feels very good there, and that’s why I never really thought about anything else. I just wanted to get back in shape and earn my new contract. And I did it.”

Real Madrid will have yet another buy-back option for a fee around €80 million. Paz gets his wish and will play at least one more season in the Italian club. — Lucas Navarrete (@LucasNavarreteM) June 26, 2026 Real Madrid will keep another option to bring Paz back for a significant fee close to €80 million, according to both Fabrizio Romano and AS. Paz wanted to stay in Como for another season knowing that it’d be hard for him to get relevant playing time in the Spanish capital with players like Arda Güler and Jude Bellingham ahead of him in the rotation. Real Madrid have decided to kick the can down the road while getting a significant transfer fee in the process. However, if they ever want Paz to be a madridista, they will have to spend that money and then some.

Antonio Rüdiger makes first start at 2026 World Cup as Germany fall 2-1 to Ecuador

(Photo by TIMOTHY A. CLARY / AFP via Getty Images) | AFP via Getty Images Despite a sensational start that saw Leroy Sané score in the 2nd minute, Germany suffered their first defeat at the 2026 World Cup at the hands of Ecuador. The Germans had already secured the top spot in Group E prior to the match. Despite having little to play for, Julian Nagelsmann fielded a strong starting 11, not deviating much from his starting lineup in the prior two matches with the only two changes being injury replacements; Antonio Rüdiger was handed his first start at the 2026 World Cup, replacing the injured Nico Schlotterbeck, while David Raum came on at left back to fill-in for Nathaniel Brown who was sidelined with a minor adductor/muscular issue. Brown, the new left-back at Bayern Munich with the German club having signed the 23-year-old for €55 million from Eintracht Frankfurt earlier in the day, is expected back for Monday’s knockout round match. Ecuador needed a win to qualify to the knockout round and played inspired football despite the early disadvantage. Playing before a predominantly Ecuadorian fan base in New Jersey, the South American nation tied the score in the 9th minute though a brilliant strike from outside the box by Sunderland’s Nilson Angulo for Ecuador’s first goal at the 2026 World Cup. However, some German fans may feel Manuel Neuer should have done more to prevent the long-distance effort. The 23-year-old Angulo also had 4 successful dribbles, the most in the match, on his way to Man of the Match honors. The decisive goal in the match came in the 77th minute from Flamengo’s Gonzalo Plata who shrewdly re-directed a Kevin Rodríguez header following a corner kick into the back of the net, striking the ball with his left foot before Manuel Neuer could grasp it with his hands. Once again, many Germans may feel the 40-year-old German keeper should have been more alert to prevent the game-winning score. Real Madrid’s Rüdiger played the entire match and completed 70 of 76 passes (92%), including 7 into the final third of the pitch, had 1 successful tackle and 4 clearances while committing no fouls. With Schlotterbeck nursing an ankle ligament injury, Rüdiger is expected to be in the starting 11 again on Monday. Germany plays Monday in Boston with its opponent likely to be Paraguay while Ecuador’s opponent will be either Mexico, Switzerland, the winner of Group K (Colombia or Portugal) or the winner of Group L (currently led by England).

Erling Haaland v Kylian Mbappé: how the Norway and France hitmen match up
Two of the best forwards in the game face each other in the World Cup on Friday. Their most dramatic contrast is in international football • Golden Boot: World Cup 2026 top goalscorers • All-time World Cup goalscorers Norway v France is arguably the most talent-loaded fixture in the World Cup group stage. Transfermarkt’s combined estimated market value of the two squads is higher than for any of the other 71 matches in this phase of the tournament. Yet the vast majority of the attention at Boston Stadium will be focused on just two men: Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé, who are already in the leading pack to win the World Cup Golden Boot for top goalscorers, both scoring twice in each of their first two games. They are very different types of forward. The Norwegian is the ultimate penalty area player, capable of finding space in the most dangerous spots where none appears to exist. His French counterpart is far more comfortable dribbling from wide areas, completing as many take-ons in two games as the Manchester City man does all season. Despite their contrasting styles, they have delivered near-identical output in Europe’s big five leagues since Haaland made his debut for Borussia Dortmund in January 2020. Continue reading...

Cucurella: “I don’t need Vinicius to defend, I’ll do the dirty work”
Real Madrid’s newest left-back Marc Cucurella talked to Radio MARCA and shared his first thoughts after completing his move to the Spanish capital. Naturally, he was asked about sharing the left wing with Vinicius Junior. “I think I’ll hit it off with him. I don’t care if he doesn’t track back, I’ll do all the dirty work he doesn’t want to do. As long as he’s decisive and fresh to score goals, I’ll happily eat up the grunt work. Vinicius has proven he’s a decisive and influential player in Real Madrid’s Champions League campaigns,” said the Spanish defender. Cucurella also talked about his conversation with José Mourinho. “When a coach like Mourinho gives you a call, that’s something to be proud of. He wrote to me, and then he called me. For him to call you up and tell you stuff, that’s a big deal. I’m really looking forward to getting started with him. I’m at a great point right now and I’m super excited to play for Real Madrid,” he explained. The Spanish player is looking forward to the challenge of playing for Real Madrid. “It’s a huge challenge. All Real Madrid players are good. Fitting in at Real Madrid isn’t easy. You gotta be at 100% every game. Every team wants to beat you,” he concluded. Cucurella has been one of Spain’s best players during the FIFA World Cup, so Real Madrid will be hoping to get the same version of him when the season kicks off.

Vinícius Júnior leads Brazil’s star cast in blockbuster show against sorry Scotland | Paul MacInnes
Miami is still a city where the stars come out to play – and on Wednesday one shone brighter than anyone else “Water so clear you can see to the bottom, hundred thousand dollar cars e’ybody got ‘em. Ain’t no surprise in the club to see Sly Stallone, Miami my second home.” So said Will Smith, and the actor-rapper’s observations ring true to this day. Miami is still a city where the stars come out to play. On this night however, and unfortunately from a Scottish perspective, Vinícius Júnior came to play his way through their defence. Just as thousands of Scots colonised Boston, so it appeared that the entire upper middle class of São Paulo had come to Florida for this big game. Brazilian celebrities had followed too, the most obvious being Ronaldinho who not only officially signed for a third division Italian side while in the city, but was afforded a VVIP spot just outside the players’ tunnel where he could greet the players, and manager Carlo Ancelotti, as they made their way out. Bellingham: “Mourinho is a top coach”
Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham talked to the press after England’s disappointing 0-0 draw against Ghana in their second game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Bellingham was asked about Real Madrid’s moves in the off-season. “Mourinho is a top, top coach. I’m very happy,” he said when asked about the Portuguese manager. Naturally, he was also asked about his new teammates now that Real Madrid have confirmed the signings of Ibrahima Konaté, Marc Cucurella and Bernardo Silva. “I’m very pleased. They are players of great quality and experience. Currently, my focus is on England, but I am very fond of the signings they’re making,” he explained. Making sure that Bellingham is at his best will be one of Mourinho’s priorities, so the Portuguese coach will surely be paying close attention to his performances during this World Cup.

Football Daily | The World Cup stage is set for a Golden Boot shootout for the ages
Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! In 10 of the past 12 World Cups, six goals has been the standard to bag yourself the Golden Boot. Usually a goal per game will suffice. In fact, on two occasions (in 2006 and 2010) a mere five strikes has been enough. Yet a quick glance at the current 2026 Geopolitics World Cup Golden Boot standings after most teams have played two games sees Lionel Messi top of the tree with five goals already from his two outings, having broken Miroslav Klose’s all-time tournament scoring record in the process. The Argentinian’s latest two goals came in a 2-0 victory over Austria in which neither Argentina nor Messi did anything of note other than score – aside from the great man shanking an early penalty miles wide, which is becoming quite the common occurrence for Messi. Think how many World Cup goals he would have if he could beat a goalkeeper from 12 yards (answer: 21, three more than he has). Lurking just behind are the pretenders to Messi’s golden throne, Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé, who between them are tearing up Group I with four goals apiece. Both the Norwegian and French frontmen have been donated at least one goal by careless Iraqi and Senegalese defenders so far, but have looked razor-sharp up top and will soon meet in a tasty decider to see who tops the group. Both, you suspect, will have designs on ensuring Messi does not hold the World Cup scoring record for long, with Mbappé already level with Klose, two behind the Argentinian. Haaland, in his debut World Cup, is already one goal behind legends like Raul, Romario and Roger Milla, who only managed five across their careers. The Fifa suits must be loving the fact all the big sexy names are firing on their global stage. It’s as if Big Gianni himself wrote the script, beaming in the knowledge that goals are a universally beloved currency, a useful tool in helping brush all the unpleasantness under the carpet. Even aside from the aforementioned trio, Harry Kane has bagged a double in his only game, Vinícius Júnior has two for the tournament so far and two of the host nations have superstar strikers (of sorts) in the shape of USA USA USA figurehead Folarin Balogun and Canadian ace Jonathan David. There is a significant striking name missing from this list, a longtime rival of Messi’s, but Football Daily is struggling to remember who that might be. Gah. Consider that this unique GWC will give top strikers an extra game in which to fill their scoring boots and maybe Just Fontaine’s record of 13 goals in a single World Cup, which has stood since 1958, might come under threat. It is possible, likely even, we will get a player in double figures for the first time since Gerd Müller hit 10 in Mexico 1970. What seems certain is this is a golden boot race for the ages, contested by the best players on the planet. For all the cynicism and moral fatigue surrounding this GWC, that is something most lovers of football can get on board with. More goals please, guys. ITV’s Sam Matterface on Egypt scoring against New Zealand: ‘They’ll be celebrating that goal all the way from Cairo to Giza!’ Coming soon (hopefully): England celebrate a goal all the way from London to Heathrow airport” – Keith Razey. May I also wade into English v Spanish GWC viewing debate (Football Daily letters passim). I’m Team Telemundo, owing to existing subscriptions and a well-founded antipathy towards Fox Corp. While I can’t understand a thing, I was delighted to see journeyman striker Roque Santa Cruz acting as a pundit the other night. It also got me intrigued to know equivalent figures in each language’s coverage: I’d love to know from our Spanish-speaking friends if there are Telemundo Roy Keanes, Mark Chapmans, Kelly Cates, Ian Wrights, Andy Townsends or (shudder) Robbie Savages out there. ¡Te deseo lo mejor! “ – Martin Clifford. As a Spurs fan I am keener than ever for the GWC to be over and the new season of the Premier League to commence. However, if you call up the table for the 2026-27 season, it is listed in alphabetical order and by this sorting method, Tottenham already sit bottom. I never thought that I would find a reason to regret West Ham being relegated” – Greg Wynn. I fear James Vortkamp-Tong’s missive (yesterday’s Football Daily letters) is a familiar spin on an email seen here many moons ago. Possibly about Watford. However, like Dad’s Army repeats, it is admittedly more amusing than newer material. Can’t beat the classics” – Andrew Taylor. Continue reading...

Real Madrid sign ten-year extension with the Euroleague -report
Real Madrid Basketball have signed a ten-year extension with the Euroleague and will remain in the most prestigious European competition in basketball, ultimately refusing to enter the NBA Europe project that the Association wanted to establish in the continent. That’s according to a report published on AS, with official confirmation expected to happen soon. The subsequent step is scheduled for Friday, the 26th, at the Euroleague board meeting, which is expected to ratify Real Madrid’s renewal. This endorsement would help finalize the competition’s structure and calendar. The prevailing expectation is approval for a 20-team, 38-round regular season, mirroring the recently concluded one, with the potential inclusion of Turkish club Besiktas replacing AS Monaco, which would be relegated to the Eurocup. All preparations are reportedly in place for assembly approval during the first half of July. Source: AS Madrid competed for the 2025-26 Euroleague title until the very end but ultimately fell short in the Final against Olympiakos.

There is nothing scarier than Lionel Messi without World Cup pressure
Photo by Tullio Puglia - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images Lionel Messi became the all-time record World Cup goalscorer with his two goals against Austria in Argentina’s second group game in Dallas, and the reigning champions guaranteed top spot in the group with a game to spare to continue their defense of the 2022 title in comfortable fashion. Messi had another sensational performance for a man just hours away from his 39th birthday, and remains the only Argentinean to score in the World Cup with all five of his nation’s goals in the tournament so far. He’s also controlling entire games with his timely touches and legendary positioning, and his workrate is also standing out – which was on full display in his second goal. Argentina and Messi look completely free in this World Cup: the weight of winning the biggest tournament of all was lifted off their shoulders four years ago, and many experts didn’t put them at the very top of the list of favorites this time around. The Albiceleste are clearly in this for a good time but also a long time, and they have a very clear plan: the other 10 players on the pitch give everything for 90 minutes, and then the ball goes to Messi and he decides the game. So far it’s working, and there’s no reason to believe it won’t continue to work. Messi no longer needs to add a World Cup to his résumé, and he clearly just wants to enjoy his sixth and final appearance to the fullest. And that makes him as dangerous and terrifying as ever. Michael Olise means just as much to France as Kylian Mbappé The first weather delay of the 2026 World Cup forced France and Iraq to wait two hours to play the second half of their Group I encounter in Philadelphia, but Michael Olise made it worth the wait. It’s easy to look at Kylian Mbappé scoring two more goals (which moved him into a tie with Miroslav Klose for second on the all-time scorers list) and think he’ll be the biggest reason for the French success in this tournament, but Olise put on another incredible show and proved he is just as important as his superstar teammate. Didier Deschamps decided after the first game that Olise’s best position is as a number 10 through the middle, allowing him to dictate play and make decisive passes. His dribbling skills and remarkable vision make him a threat everywhere, but playing centrally in behind France’s ultra-talented front three has made him unstoppable. He has three assists through two games but has created many more big chances with his extraordinary skill set. His season at Bayern Munich made him a worldwide superstar, but his World Cup performance will make him one of the world’s very best players if he continues to dominate games. Erling Haaland is laughing in our faces Erling Haaland’s first World Cup could not have started any better: two games, four goals, and one new signature celebration: he… just… laughs. It’s not a big laugh, he barely cracks a smile, but he is just extremely amused as he finds the net again, and again, and again. Maybe Haaland thought that the World Cup stage would truly test him, that maybe all the pressure of being the sexy pick for biggest dark horses before the tournament would get to him and his team somehow. But through two games in Boston against Iraq and especially against a big, tough and physical Senegal defense, he’s made it look too easy. And he knows it. You can see it on his face that he knows it. Norway will be in the knockout rounds but have a chance to top the group if they beat Mbappé and France on Friday in what was already one of the most anticipated games of the entire group stage but is now absolutely must-see, and Haaland will face two of the best center-backs on the planet in the World Cup arena that France tends to dominate. Maybe he finally stops laughing. Is that a good or a bad thing for France? Jordan deserved more from their first World Cup Tournament newcomers Jordan were eliminated from contention in the final game of the day in heartbreaking fashion, as they took the lead against Algeria early only to concede twice in the last 20 minutes and see their World Cup dream end with zero points after the first two games. The elimination is not a surprise, but Jordan definitely deserved better luck. Their performance in the opener against Austria was outstanding, and they were fully in control at halftime in this one before a couple of great substitutions by the Algerian coaching staff completely changed the game. Jordan will say goodbye to their World Cup journey against Lionel Messi and defending champions Argentina on Saturday, which will certainly be an unforgettable night for a team that made their nation proud.

Real Madrid monitoring Bouaddi’s World Cup performances -report
Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi is one of the most promising players in this 2026 FIFA World Cup and Real Madrid are monitoring his performances knowing that he could be headed towards joining a bigger club this summer, according to a report published on AS. Bouaddi is still 18 years old, so it’s clear that he would still need some time to develop as a player before he could actually be considered an undisputed starter for a big club. However, his profile would make a ton of sense for Madrid, given that he’s a creative midfielder who likes to play deep. Other clubs like Paris Saint-Germain could enter the race for his signing, so Real Madrid will likely have to prepare for a long and expensive transfer saga if they truly want to sign the Moroccan gem.

While some people might wish to characterise the club as being ruthless, the reality is that the club is rather accepting of players running down their contracts. Where some clubs would isolate a player and make them miserable enough to seek refuge away, Real Madrid will listen to offers and wait for the player to decide. Midfield Under Pressure The Real Madrid midfield has always been under intense scrutiny. When the team is successful, they are the best in the world. When the team loses a match, suddenly almost any midfielder not already in the squad is just as good if not better. Camavinga The young frenchman has been unfortunate to be injured so frequently and has failed to really fight for a place in the XI. Arda Güler Arda’s trajectory has been the opposite of Camavinga’s. The talented Turk’s journey has been more of a struggle than a comfortable ascent. This does not tell us much about what will happen in the future but it might suggest to us that Arda will be in the mood to earn his place in Mourinho’s team. The kid has great self-belief and under Mourinho, the types of outbursts we saw from Arda will likely be met with swift disciplinary action. His main focus will be continuing to develop his game and work on his weaknesses to help optimise the strengths. Fede vs Tchouaméni Valverde and Tchouaméni capped off an awful season with a squabble that ended with Fede sustaining a head injury. The fight made headlines and capped off the circus that was the 2025/26 season for Los Blancos. The rumours kicked-off soon after about which of the two players would be shipped off in the summer. Now that Real Madrid have recruited Bernardo Silva and are openly in search of a crucial piece of the midfield puzzle, the question rings loud about who will be sold this summer. Fede is unanimously seen as one of the chief villains in the dressing room. It will be interesting to see if the Uruguay international can repair relations with his teammates and become a Real captain. Mourinho knows the difference between a leader and a captain and does not always care who wears the armband as long as he has leaders in the dressing room and on the pitch. It is most likely that both Fede and Tchouameni will stay given that neither would be motivated to leave and might prefer to make amends if that is the price of continuing at the Bernabeu. 🚨 BREAKING: Fede Valverde will STAY at Real Madrid. TCHOUAMENI & CAMAVINGA are midfield sale candidates, NOT Valverde. The club fully trusts Fede, and he will be the CAPTAIN next season. @diarioas pic.twitter.com/VLk5oaVFul — Madrid Xtra (@MadridXtra) June 21, 2026 Bale On Mourinho 🗣️ Gareth Bale: “Mourinho prods to get the best out of you. OFFICIAL: Real Madrid deny contacts with Olise
Real Madrid have published a statement denying any kind of contact with Bayern Munich star Michael Olise, who has been rumored to be on the team’s radar for this summer’s transfer window. In light of the information published in various media outlets regarding an alleged interest of our club in Bayern Munich player Michael Olise, Real Madrid C. F. wishes to clarify that it has not had any direct or indirect contact with the aforementioned footballer, his representatives, or individuals in his circle. Real Madrid also wishes to highlight the excellent institutional relationship it maintains with Bayern Munich, with whom it shares a long history of mutual respect, collaboration, and admiration, and regrets the dissemination of speculations that do not correspond to reality. Both clubs have always maintained a relationship based on trust and mutual respect, which is reflected, among other aspects, in the shared conviction that any potential interest in a player belonging to the other club must be addressed first between the entities themselves, in accordance with the principles of institutional loyalty that have historically governed the relations between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. Source: Realmadrid.com Real Madrid will likely still have some sort of interest, but negotiating with Bayern for this kind of star will be very tough.

Dumfries shines as the Netherlands thrash Sweden 5-1
HOUSTON, TEXAS - JUNE 20: Denzel Dumfries #22 of the Netherlands runs with the ball during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group F match between Netherlands and Sweden at Houston Stadium on June 20, 2026 in Houston, Texas. (Photo by Molly Darlington/Getty Images) | Getty Images The Netherlands took control of Group F in a stellar performance on Saturday afternoon in Houston. Ronald Koeman’s men demolished Sweden 5-1, and newly signed Real Madrid defender Denzel Dumfries had a great game with two assists. Brian Brobbey came in for Crysencio Summerville in the only change to the Oranje side that drew 2-2 with Japan in their opener, and his two goals inside the opening 17 minutes gave him the fourth-fastest brace in World Cup history. Sweden grew into the contest and threatened Bart Verbruggen’s goal late in the first half, but the superb Gakpo struck twice within seven minutes after the break. Anthony Elanga pulled one back for Sweden shortly before the hour, before fellow substitute Summerville added a late fifth for Koeman’s side, who are now all but certain of a place in the knockout rounds. Denzel Dumfries played the full 90 and grabbed two assists from an xA of 0.42. His passing accuracy sat at 82% (28/34). Defensively, he did plenty as well – eight defensive contributions, including three tackles, four headed clearances, one interception and three recoveries. He won four of seven ground duels and his only aerial duel, but got dribbled past once and committed two fouls.

Smiles & Casualties | June 20th, 2026
The Daily Merengue is a place where you can feel free to d all things football. Do not be alarmed by the overt RMCF bias. It’s in the name! Shoutout to the mods who do a fantastic job, Ezek, Valyrian Steel, Felipejack, Juninho, NeRObutBlanco and yours truly, Kung_Fu_Zizou Vinicius Junior coming alive for Brazil at the World Cup. Vinicius is a natural big game player. This is a gift simply not given to many. But he’s had it from the jump. Before his finishing and decision-making were polished, he would always put on a performance on the big stage. The current Brazil squad is not among their greatest. Not even close. Ancelotti will have to rely on a mix of youth, experience and the magic of Vinicius Junior. Ancelotti’s most successful spell as a manager in club football coincided with the rise of Vinicius Junior. One should not be surprised should the Don stake all his World Cup hopes on #7. Arda’s World Cup is Over Arda ❤️ pic.twitter.com/nZsbQREOwT — Madrid Xtra (@MadridXtra) June 20, 2026 Turkey huffed and puffed by simply could not do enough against a feisty Paraguay side who got an early lead and fought doggedly to keep it. Arda and his teammates needed to win or draw the game to stay in the competition. They didn’t come close. The ball wouldn’t sit for them and they failed to force the issue. There was a softness about them despite the talent and self-belief in their squad, they don’t seem to have the discipline required to really compete consistently. A good comparison would be Morocco. Morocco have a lot of talent but play with a lot of discipline. On the bright side, the likes of Arda and Yildiz have now managed to qualify for the Euros and the World Cup. The experience will stand them in good stead. Housekeeping Bouaddi On The Radar Bouaddi is looking like the Real Deal. Calafat is already big on the youngster and given his success in brining bright young talents to the club, it might be wise to go after the youngster before Morocco win their first knockout game. 🚨👀 Real Madrid scouts were in Boston to watch Ayyoub Bouaddi last night. @RubenMartinAS pic.twitter.com/OhEpnhauSg — Madrid Xtra (@MadridXtra) June 20, 2026 One More For A New Back-4 Real Madrid have already added two fullbacks and a centre-back. One more centre-back would mean a likely completely new back-4 for next season. That would be a most extraordinary overhaul. Given the issues in defence over the last couple of seasons, maybe Mourinho wants extra cover in anticipation of injuries and managing minutes for players while competing on all fronts. 🚨 JUST IN: Jose Mourinho wants a left-footed centerback. The names most mentioned at the club are Nico Schlotterbeck and Piero Hincapié. @benfeerr pic.twitter.com/SlEBEx9c6e — Madrid Zone (@theMadridZone) June 20, 2026 FOOD FOR THOUGHT Signing another young midfielder would be great but takes us back to having to trust the midfielders who haven’t had the composure to see us through the last two seasons. Maybe the terrible back to back seasons will make them better? Bouaddi seems like he would be a good investment and allow us to develop an alternative solution to the midfield of the past two seasons even if he doesn’t solve the problem immediately. There’s a high probability that only Jude remains in 2028 after the midfield reconstruction is completed. Real Madrid seem to be keeping their cards close to the chest regarding the next couple of signings. It is likely that the club might seek to secure some sales before making the next two signings. The noise around Nico Paz and Gonzalo Garcia seems to suggest there’s some pressure to make sales. Fran Garcia is another one who will likely leave but Betis will not want to pay.

How Thomas Tuchel Used Jude Bellingham Against Croatia
After the 2022/23 season, Borussia Dortmund were prepared to sell Jude Bellingham to a top-tier team. Real Madrid was able to pull one off and won the English midfielder’s services. However, question marks over Bellingham’s position were raised because Los Blancos already had Toni Kroos, Aurélien Tchouaméni, and Federico Valverde, with Luka Modric coming off the bench. His best days with Dortmund were the ones when he operated as a box-to-box midfielder. At Real Madrid, that position was already taken. Jude Bellingham’s incoming coincided with Karim Benzema’s departure. Therefore, Carlo Ancelotti proceeded by introducing the Englishman as a ten behind Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo. Fortunately, Jude Bellingham exceeded expectations, as he racked up good numbers, scoring 19 goals and assisting six, demonstrating world-class ability to arrive late in the box and read free spaces to attack. The arrival of Kylian Mbappé in the 2024 – 2025 season meant that Bellingham was no longer needed in advanced areas, and the team would take advantage of his services by having him adopt a deeper role. One of Real Madrid’s problems in recent seasons was Bellingham’s reluctance to understand his status post-Mbappé‘s arrival. In the 2025 – 2026 season, Bellingham had a deeper role, operating on the left, leaving his advanced role to a traditional number ten, Arda Guler. In his first game in the World Cup, Thomas Tuchel used the English midfielder in a different way than he used to play at Real Madrid. After the 4-2 win against Croatia, the England manager, said, “The decision to let him play and trust him was because (of) the last 16-17 days, how he bought into the idea of team spirit, and how we wanted to play football. It’s different from his position in Real Madrid.” Most of his time on the pitch against Croatia, Jude Bellingham had the license to roam on the right half-space, functioning in sync with Noni Madueke and Reece James to work out wide connections. He was operating deep to support progression or attacking spaces after Harry Kane dropped deeper, pulling defenders out of their positions. England adopted a 4-2-2-2 when building out from the back, in which Bellingham accompanied Kane in the 10 position; and Madueke with Gordon ahead of them. Thomas Tuchel relied on wide connections, wherein Bellingham and Madueke tended to proceed with double movements. The former attacked the depth to drag Pasalic with him and clear the channel for Madueke to drop and receive with his preferred foot toward the inside on the pitch. In general, double movements were key to England finding space to progress or generate passing lanes. On the right, Bellingham would coordinate with Kane or Madueke, making runs to attack the depth for one of them to drop out. Modric’s advanced position in the high press from goalkicks, operating diagonally between Kane and Anderson, and Bellingham’s slightly high positioning supplied Harry Kane with space to receive, turn, and locate teammates. Also, Vuskovic’s late pressure on Kane contributed to the success of England’s direct attack. Add to that Bellingham’s diagonal movement to draw Pasalic, which freed up the diagonal passing lane into Madueke, allowing England to attack in a 3v3 situation. Harry Kane’s deeper movements were a real dilemma for Vuskovic and Modric. They preferred to hold onto their positions instead of following him. That stuttering allowed Bellingham to come from behind and attack the depth from the right half-space, exploiting Vuskovic not returning to his position, with Gvardiol’s inability to sweep behind as he was tied to Madueke. When England retreated, Bellingham operated alongside one of Rice and Anderson as one of them tended to drop to the backline, keeping tabs on one of Croatia’s attacking midfielders. So, Bellingham was tasked to swing across the midfield line based on the ball side and cover the central channels. Here, he handed Pasalic to Rice down the right half-space to follow Sucic, as Croatia worked the ball across the backline. Gordon would regain possession thanks to Stanisic’s heavy touch, whereas Bellingham’s position enabled him to collect the loose ball and initiate the transition. England worked the ball toward Madueke in a 1v1 situation against Gvardiol. The former noticed Bellingham’s in-depth run between the center-backs, playing the ball across. However, Sutalo disturbed Bellingham at the last moment. England was more vertical on the ball, counting on Harry Kane’s deeper movements to drag markers and release runners in spaces that appeared. Second, before their third goal, the Three Lions baited Croatia forward via backward passes: Tuchel’s team worked the ball toward Reece James, who prodded it back inside to Anderson. The latter benefited from his side-on orientation to slice Croatia open with an accurate pass into the space behind the opposing team’s backline: After pulling out their markers, Madueke and Bellingham peeled off wide, with the former drifting infield to draw Vuskovic with him inside and clear the way for Bellingham to penetrate the box and score his first 2026 World Cup goal. The momentum swung in favor of the English players. Following the kick-off, Thomas Tuchel’s men hunted the Croatians, forcing the goalkeeper to play long into the center. Declan Rice and Bellingham operating in close proximity allowed the latter to collect the knockdown and drive forward, capitalizing on Croatia’s need for time to reorganize. As a result, Bellingham had the chance to increase the deficit. However, Livakovic saved the shot. The debate that was spread across England over Bellingham’s spot in the starting eleven seemed to disappear as the English midfielder’s performance against Croatia proved his right to earn that place. “You can rely on him in these moments. He loves these pressure games — it brings out the best in him,” said Tuchel after the game. Moreover, using Jude Bellingham as a runner to capitalize on Harry Kane’s deeper movements and as a deep midfielder was a clear sign from the German manager of what type of midfielders he wants to maximize England’s playing style.

Courtois: “My Goal Is To Finish My Career At Real Madrid”
Belgium's goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois pictured during a press conference of Belgian national soccer team Red Devils in their base camp, home of the Seattle Sounders, Renton, Seattle, USA, on Friday 19 June 2026. The Red Devils prepare for their next game in the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.BELGA PHOTO DIRK WAEM (Photo by DIRK WAEM / BELGA MAG / Belga / AFP via Getty Images) | BELGA MAG/AFP via Getty Images Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois spoke to the media while on World Cup duty, touching on his future, Belgium’s tournament ambitions, media criticism, the influence of American sports, and the challenges awaiting his national team in the competition. The Real Madrid shot-stopper made it clear that he does not envision a return to Belgian club football before retirement. “I’m not thinking about playing in Belgium again. For me, the Pro League is a closed chapter. Genk also has many good young goalkeepers, so… My goal is to finish my career at Real Madrid.” Courtois also discussed the unique demands of the World Cup and the importance of finishing atop the group in order to minimize travel throughout the tournament. “The TV is on a lot; we watch quite a few World Cup matches. I notice that a lot of goals are scored in the final minutes. Also, that the gap between teams isn’t usually very wide. Everyone wants to do their own thing, but these days every match is a battle. It’ll be the same against Iran. But we want to win, we want to finish first. That way we can stay in Seattle and travel less. We won’t have to be changing hotels and packing all the time. That’s better for the family too. I remember the World Cup in Russia, when we had to travel so much. In the end, it takes its toll. I don’t mind playing at midday. It’s harder with the weather in other places. There’s often more pace in the afternoon matches, but you get used to it.” The Belgian goalkeeper also addressed the role of the media during major tournaments, suggesting that excessive criticism can become a distraction for national teams. “Before Qatar, there was a lot of unrest surrounding the team, through the press. That doesn’t help the team. We know perfectly well whether it was good or bad. If there isn’t too much criticism during the tournament, all the better. I’d prefer they filled the newspapers with their articles after the tournament. But oh well, they have their job, and that’s respectable. It’s part of the game. Right now, things are still calm here.” Courtois then expanded on the subject, specifically highlighting his frustrations with inaccurate reporting and the impact it can have on players. “I’m not referring to the Belgian media, but I often read things in Spain that are fabricated. Things that aren’t true. It turns out they’re true a month later, but who takes responsibility then? There’s freedom of expression, that’s true, but often false things are written. Maybe 80 percent is false. That hurts the players. Social media doesn’t help either, nor does AI.” Away from football, Courtois revealed his admiration for American sports culture, pointing to the NBA and NFL as examples of professionalism and preparation. “I like to follow American sports, like the NBA and the NFL. There’s always a lot of excitement surrounding the games. The quality and work ethic are also incredibly high. As soccer players, we can sometimes learn something from them; they arrive early in the morning and leave late at night because they receive so much theoretical training. Among soccer players, there are many who quit after fifteen minutes.” Looking ahead to Belgium’s upcoming clash with Iran, Courtois warned against underestimating their opponents despite Belgium entering the match as favorites. “We can’t predict how we’ll fare against Iran. That team played well against New Zealand; they can be dangerous. We’ll be well prepared. I didn’t quite understand how the Belgians assessed our match against Egypt. Everyone always expects to start with a great game, but there have already been many surprises in this World Cup. Egypt handled it well too. I think we hurt ourselves by misplacing too many passes and not having enough rhythm. Against Iran, we have to play our own game from the first minute. But we respect our opponent. I don’t think it’s a disadvantage for Iran to have to fly back immediately after the match. But the fact that they always have to travel before the game isn’t ideal. There are other restrictions for that team as well. Perhaps that motivates them, so we shouldn’t underestimate them.”

Rüdiger excited at the prospect of playing under Mourinho

Photo: Christian Charisius/dpa (Photo by Christian Charisius/picture alliance via Getty Images) Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger can’t wait to get going under new head coach Jose Mourinho. Real Madrid announced the German international’s renewal until 2027 on Tuesday. He spoke to the media from the German national team’s camp at the World Cup. “I can’t say too much, but I can say that I’m incredibly excited. Finally, I’m going to play under his management,” said Rüdiger. “There were many conversations with him in the past, but for some reason, it never came to fruition. That’s why I’m even happier to welcome him to us now.” Rüdiger has played at Chelsea and AS Roma in the preceding years of his career before joining Real Madrid. José Mourinho has also coached AS Roma and Chelsea but at different times. However, their paths are finally crossing at Real Madrid. Real Madrid have already reinforced the center-back with Imbrahima Konate and are looking to make at least one more signing in the position. Rüdiger is still expected to play a vital role as an experienced figure.
