Xavi Espart to change position? Barcelona star talks playing pivot for Spain’s Under-19s
DENBIGH, WALES - JULY 04: Xavi Espart Font of Spain arrives at the stadium prior to the UEFA European Under-19 Championship 2026 match between Spain and Germany at Central Park on July 04, 2026 in Denbigh, Wales. (Photo by Harry Murphy - UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images) | UEFA via Getty Images Xavi Espart has been shining for Spain’s Under 19s this summer and has switched roles for his stint on international duty. The full-back has been playing in midfield and has been among the goals as Spain have booked their place in the final of the Under-19s Euros against Germany. Espart has been asked about his position switch and if Hansi Flick should be trying him in midfield next season for Barcelona. “Hansi will decide what needs to be done. Right now, the important thing is Saturday. We’ve fought hard to be here, and I’m fully focused on the final,” he told Marca. “At Barça I was able to make my debut as a full-back, and here I play as a defensive midfielder, which is where I played until I was a youth player. “I feel very comfortable in both positions, and I think that could be one of my strengths. Wherever they put me, I’ll give 100%.” Flick has previously compared Espart to Germany legend Philipp Lahm and he will certainly be one to watch next season at Barcelona.

Spain boss explains why he dropped Pedri for World Cup quarter-final vs Belgium
INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA - JULY 10: Pedri Gonzalez of Spain looks on during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Quarter Final match between Spain and Belgium at Los Angeles Stadium on July 10, 2026 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Europa Press Sports/Europa Press via Getty Images) | Europa Press via Getty Images Spain boss Luis de la Fuente has explained why he dropped Barcelona midfielder Pedri to the bench for Friday’s World Cup quarter-final against Belgium. Pedri was a surprise absentee from the starting XI for the match, with PSG star Fabian Ruiz getting the nod instead for the key match. De la Fuente was quizzed on his team selection after the game and offered up the following response. “It’s unfair that Mikel Merino isn’t playing, but it would be equally unfair if someone else were left out. Only eleven can play, and they understand that role, the part they have to play at any given moment. “When they come on, they know what they have to do, which is why it’s a pleasure to be their coach. Fabián is training very well, as is Pedri, but any of them could play. “We were looking to give the team a different feel; Fabián has more control of the game, he’s different from Pedri. We understood that’s what we needed: more attacking threat, while Pedri is left out for the final stages with his freshness and vision.” Ruiz did go on to score the opening goal in the match which ended in a 2-1 victory for Spain and set up a semi-final tie against France.

‘The best is yet to come’ – Spain boss sends Lamine Yamal warning ahead of Belgium clash
ARLINGTON, TEXAS - JULY 06: Lamine Yamal #19 of Spain celebrates during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round Of 16 match between Portugal and Spain at Dallas Stadium on July 06, 2026 in Arlington, Texas. (Photo by Koji Watanabe/Getty Images) | Getty Images Spain boss Luis de la Fuente says the best is yet to come from Barcelona star Lamine Yamal at World Cup 2026 ahead of their quarter-final tie with Belgium. Yamal returned from injury at the beginning of the tournament and scored on his first start for La Roja against Saudi Arabia. The teenager hasn’t found the back of the net since but has remained influential, and De la Fuente says he is raring to go ahead of the game in Los Angeles later. “If you look at Lamine’s situation, I think he’s a very dangerous player for opponents today because he’s very eager and motivated. But what we’re trying to do is calm that down so it doesn’t turn into anxiety, and that’s not positive. We want him to be motivated, with enormous desire, and he is,” he told reporters. “We know that the best Lamine, the offensive one, the most flashy and highly valued, is yet to come. Because he hasn’t yet made that leap to the level of brilliance we’re used to seeing from him. He will, for sure.” Yamal and Spain are favorites heading into the match and know victory will set up a semi-final clash with France following their victory over Morocco.

Gavi dreams of scoring a bicycle kick in the World Cup final for Spain vs Lionel Messi’s Argentina
LOS ANGELES, UNITED STATES - JULY 2: Gavi of Spain during the World Cup match between Spain v Austria at the Los Angeles Stadium on July 2, 2026 in Los Angeles United States (Photo by Eric Verhoeven/Soccrates/Getty Images) | Getty Images Barcelona midfielder Gavi has revealed he’s always dreamed of scoring the winner in the World Cup final with a bicycle kick. Gavi is currently preparing for a quarter-final tie with Belgium and spoke about how he’d love to face Lionel Messi’s Argentina in the final. “Of course I hope to be important in the World Cup. I dream of scoring the title-winning goal. I’ve always dreamed of scoring a bicycle kick in the World Cup final,” he told reporters. “They’re dreams, and I hope they come true. The opponent? I’d like Argentina because of Leo Messi, but as long as we reach the final, it doesn’t matter who it is.” Gavi started Spain’s opening game of the World Cup but has only featured once since as a substitute. He admits he wants to play more but that the team comes first. “I came here to win the World Cup. The manager knows me better than anyone. We all want to play more, but what really matters is winning the World Cup. He knows he can count on me for anything he needs,” he added. “I don’t like to talk about that. Belgium has magnificent players, as does Portugal. We have to do our job very well. If we do, things will surely turn out well. The important thing is to beat Belgium. France or Morocco? They are two great teams, but I would say Morocco, because they eliminated us in Qatar.” Spain take on Belgium on Friday and know a victory will see them progress to a semi-final against France or Morocco.

Quietly confident Pau Cubarsi is the best of the Barcelona bunch for Spain at World Cup 2026
ARLINGTON, TEXAS - JULY 06: Pau Cubarsi #22 of Spain controls the ball against Nuno Mendes #25 of Portugal during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 match between Portugal and Spain at Dallas Stadium on July 06, 2026 in Arlington, Texas. (Photo by Hannah Peters - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images) | FIFA via Getty Images Now we’re really getting down to the nitty-gritty at the World Cup. With just eight teams left and the tension rising all the time. These are the games when tournaments are won and lost. When the going gets tough, the tough get going and all that. So far, with the possible exception of Germany going out of the tournament, there haven’t really been too many shocks to mull over. Norway beating Brazil shouldn’t really have surprised anyone because the current Selecao crop is nowhere close to being World Cup-winning material. One of the teams that certainly are in the mix to win the tournament is Spain. La Roja had been on an amazing unbeaten run prior to beginning their World Cup against Cape Verde – a game that almost certainly gave them a timely wake-up call. Since that opener, they’ve dispatched Saudi Arabia (4-0), Uruguay (1-0), Austria (3-0) and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal 1-0, earning a vast amount of plaudits along the way for the manner in which they continue to play the game. It remains very pleasing on the eye, but certain performances still remain largely under the radar. For example, in order for La Roja to have got to this stage without conceding a single goal, the back four, and particularly the centre of defence, need to be absolutely spot on in each and every game. Pau Cubarsi, just 19 years of age and playing at his first-ever World Cup, has been virtually peerless. Barcelona supporters have long known the class of the centre-back, who has continued to excel since being given his wings in the first team. What’s particularly pleasing about the youngster is his maturity and ability to take every game, no matter the importance, in his stride. That’s incredibly unusual for all but those players that could be regarded as truly elite and world-class, and yet nothing seems to faze Cubarsi. His performances are almost always at the highest level, though only occasionally universally acknowledged as such. During the World Cup, his positioning, tackling accuracy, speed of thought and actual speed have been one of the standout features of some fine all-round contributions. Whilst Mikel Oyarzabal or Lamine Yamal might be hogging the headlines, Cubarsi certainly deserves to have his own name in lights – particularly if Spain do go on to add the trophy to the European Championship won two years ago.

‘What a player’ – Rivaldo goes crazy for Lionel Messi after Argentina’s comeback win
ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JULY 07: Lionel Messi #10 of Argentina reacts after his penalty kick is saved by Mostafa Shoubir #23 of Egypt during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 match between Argentina and Egypt at Atlanta Stadium on July 07, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Buda Mendes/Getty Images) | Getty Images Barcelona legend Rivaldo could not hide his admiration for Lionel Messi after the GOAT helped fire Argentina into the quarter-finals of World Cup 2026. Lionel Scaloni’s side looked down and out after going 2-0 down to Egypt but produced a stirring comeback to win 3-2 and make it through to the quarter-finals. Rivaldo was quick to take to social media afterwards to speak of his admiration for Messi and his performance on Tuesday. “What a fighting spirit, what a desire to win, what a battle and dedication from everyone! This is exactly what the fan expects from his team in the World Cup,” he posted on Instagram. “As for talking about Leo Messi, it’s a given. What a player! At 39 years old, playing his sixth World Cup in his career, he still shows the same passion for the Argentina jersey; he celebrates, he fights, he cries, and once again he is the decisive player. View this post on Instagram “I am Brazilian, I love my country, and I will always cheer for the Brazilian national team. Competition is part of football, but I also know how to appreciate and admire when I watch a great match and a team that gives everything it has on the field. “Matches like these elevate the value of football, and they are worthy of the World Cup. Congratulations to Argentina on qualifying.” Argentina and Messi now go on to play either Switzerland or Colombia for a place in the last four of the tournament.

‘Incredible’ – Lionel Messi thrilled by Argentina win but ‘really angry’ at missing penalty
MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA - JULY 03: Lionel Messi #10 of Argentina celebrates after the team's second goal by Lisandro Martinez #6 during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 match between Argentina and Cabo Verde at Miami Stadium on July 03, 2026 in Miami Gardens, Florida. (Photo by Carmen Mandato - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images) | FIFA via Getty Images Lionel Messi has shared his thoughts after Argentina qualified for the quarter-finals of World Cup 2026 after a 3-2 win over Egypt in the last 16. The GOAT was on target as the defending champions turned around a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2, thanks to a last-gasp goal from Enzo Fernandez. Messi was clearly emotional afterwards and admitted it was a huge relief to make it through. “Honestly, I’m happy to have qualified, because of how we did it. It got tough at 2-0. It was very exciting to be able to turn it around. We suffered a lot again, but this is the World Cup. All the matches are the same. Everything is very close. I’m very happy,” he told reporters. “It was a relief for everyone, given how the game unfolded. It’s not easy to come back from 2-0 down… But, as I always say, this group never gives up and tries until the very end. We were lucky to get Cuti’s goal early, we still had time left, and we turned it around in the 90 minutes. What this group did today was incredible. I’m very happy, very pleased that people can continue to enjoy it. I hope we keep going.” Messi missed the chance to make it 1-1 after missing a penalty and admitted he was devastated to pass up the chance from the spot. “I was really angry about the penalty, very distressed about missing again. If I had scored the penalty at that moment, it would have changed the game. We were playing well. Aside from the penalty, we had clear chances. The goalkeeper made some incredible saves,” he added. “Luckily, in the end, I got the chance. It’s something very special to be able to help this group after what had happened. It’s yet another example of pride, character, and desire. I’m very proud.” Messi has now missed two penalties at World Cup 2026 but he’s still the leading scorer with eight goals from five matches for Argentina.

Argentina 3-2 Egypt, World Cup 2026: Lionel Messi leads historic comeback as Albiceleste advance to quarter-finals
Photo by Evrim Aydin/Anadolu via Getty Images Argentina’s World Cup title defense is somehow, someway, remarkably still alive as the Albiceleste pulled off a historic comeback to beat Egypt 3-2 in their Round of 16 clash in Atlanta. After going down 2-0 in the first 80 minutes and looking all but done, Lionel Messi put on the cape and led a comeback that was completed by a 92nd minute winner from Enzo Fernández to send Argentina to the Last Eight in the most dramatic way imaginable. Reactions & Observations For 80 minutes in Atlanta, Argentina were staring at one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history with a flat, slow and very poor performance. Egypt defended for their lives, Mostafa Shoubir had the game of his life in goal, and the underdogs had a two-goal lead that felt like good enough to pull off a miracle. Then Lionel Messi happened: after missing an early penalty and not looking like himself he decided to put the country on his back, assisting Cuti Romero’s header and scoring a powerful and angry goal off the crossbar to equalize and bring the Albiceleste back to life. And there was still time for the miracle: a great pass from Julián Álvarez released Lautaro Martínez down the right wing, and his cross was headed home by Enzo Fernández to send the crowd into a frenzy and complete one of the greatest comebacks of all time. It’s hard to find the words to describe the feeling of watching that unfold, what this means for Messi’s legacy as he decides yet another World Cup game, and how much momentum Argentina will take from this despite a very poor performance. There is nothing like the World Cup. There will never be anything like the World Cup.

Portugal 0-1 Spain, World Cup 2026: La Roja dominate second half, advance to quarter-finals
Photo by Torbjorn Tande/DeFodi Images/DeFodi via Getty Images Spain’s journey in World Cup 2026 continues as La Roja secured safe passage to the quarter-finals thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 win against Iberian rivals Portugal in Dallas on Monday’s Round of 16 clash. After a great back-and-forth battle in the first half, La Roja established their superiority in the second and sealed the victory in added time thanks to a Mikel Merino winner assisted by Ferran Torres to set up a quarter-final against the USA or Belgium on Friday. Reactions & Observations If the opening 45 minutes were a wondeful back-and-forth battle between two very talented squads, the second half showed exactly why Spain are a team and Portugal are a collection of individuals: La Roja were far superior in the final period, and deservedly won the game at the end after dominating in every phase of the game. The much-anticipated duel between Nuno Mendes and Lamine Yamal was a lot of fun: both players were up for it and both came out on top in different moments, and it’s a real shame that it only lasted 55 minutes as Mendes was forced off with an injury. Yamal’s performance was far from perfect, but he was still involved in plenty of dangerous moments and did a lot of damage as a playmaker. With better finishing around him, he could have easily gotten an assist in this one. Luis de la Fuente isn’t exactly beloved by Barcelona fans, but his impact on this game is undeniable: two crucial substitutions (Ferran Torres and Mikel Merino) that changed the feel of the contest and ultimately won it at the end. Sorry, everyone, but he’s a good coach. Speaking of sorry, the apology needs to be as loud as the disrespect when it comes to Ferran: he came off the bench determined to put pressure on the Portugal defense with his non-stop running with and without the ball, and his assist for Merino’s winner was a beautiful display of his quality. Very decisive contributions from a player who will forever be underrated, even by fans of his own club. Spain are through as deserved winners, and after a dominant performance against Austria they showed up again and were far superior to Portugal in the second half. This is the type of win and display that makes you believe they can actually do it in a possible semi-final against France if they get past USA or Belgium in Friday’s quarter-final.

Let’s talk about Mikel Oyarzabal: Spain’s quiet man forced into the limelight
The 29-year-old forward always avoided attention, but his World Cup goals have dragged him into the centre of the conversation We have to talk about Mikel Oyarzabal. When Spain scored their third goal against Austria in Los Angeles, cameras caught Lamine Yamal’s little brother celebrating, fists clenched and shouting “come on!”. The picture couldn’t have been more perfect, and not just because Keyne is impossibly cute. Even the apparent imperfection was just right. On the row below, clapping and half-hiding the three-year-old, was a woman in sunglasses, prompting a Spanish TV commentator to post: “The blonde in front has denied us the best sticker of all time.” To which the striker Borja Iglesias replied: “The blonde in front has given you two goals today, my friend.” Turns out the blonde woman is Oyarzabal’s mum: her name is Dorleta and it was her son who had just scored his second goal of the game and his fourth of the tournament. Two days later, after the Selección had finished their first training session in Dallas, Marca asked Oyarzabal if he had seen the footage. Continue reading...

La Roja arrive at this stage after their best performance of the tournament in the Round of 32, cruising past Austria and dominating every phase of the game. They finally played like title contenders, but now face a monster test on the road to the quarter-finals. Portugal’s pre-tournament credentials placed them as one of the favorites due to their depth of world-class talent in almost every position, but their World Cup performance has not been anywhere near good enough. In fact, Portugal can count themselves extremely lucky to be here after being thoroughly outplayed by Croatia and needing a very late winner and a very controversial VAR decision to avoid extra-time and escape the Round of 32. Roberto Martínez’s side do not look like favorites or something even close to that, but it’s impossible to think this will be easy for Spain. Portugal tend to rise to the occasion, and they beat Spain in last year’s Nations League Final. They have too much talent to be taken for granted, and they’ll require La Roja’s very best. The duel between Lamine Yamal and Nuno Mendes was a big talking point in that Nations League clash and is once again the big highlight matchup in this one, and Lamine’s ability to conquer one of his toughest opponents will be crucial to Spain’s ability to advance to the quarters. Spain showed in the last round they are a better team than Portugal, but their opponents have a crazy talented collection of individuals. It’s time to see what wins at the biggest stage. Let’s dance. (Be careful, Lamine.) POSSIBLE LINEUPS Spain (4-2-3-1): Simón; Porro, Cubarsí, Laporte, Cucurella; Rodri, Pedri; Yamal, Olmo, Baena; Oyarzabal Portugal (4-2-3-1): Costa; Cancelo, Dias, Veiga, Mendes; Neves, Vitinha; Neto, Fernandes, Leão; Ronaldo PREDICTION Portugal is messy and should be beaten, but their talent simply cannot be taken for granted. This will be fun and open and full of chances, and I’m picking Spain to find a way to win a thriller: 3-2 La Roja.

‘Absolute confidence’ – Spain boss talks Pau Cubarsi vs Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of Portugal clash
ZAPOPAN, MEXICO - JUNE 26: Pau Cubarsi #22 of Spain looks on during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match between Uruguay and Spain at Guadalajara Stadium on June 26, 2026 in Guadalajara, Mexico. (Photo by David Ramos/Getty Images) | Getty Images Spain boss Luis de la Fuente is confident his players can handle the threat offered by Cristiano Ronaldo when his team face Portugal at World Cup 2026 on Monday. Ronaldo is still going at the age of 41 and has scored four goals so far at the World Cup. De la Fuente was asked about a possible duel between Pau Cubarsi and Ronaldo and says the Barcelona star can handle it. “You can never relax against Cristiano, just like with Lamine or Oyarzabal. But I have absolute confidence in my players. That’s the game: to overcome the opponent, especially near the penalty areas. Both Pau and Laporte have shown absolute composure. They are exceptional and can beat any opponent. It’s a battle to see who can do the most. I think we can control those situations,” he told reporters. “A footballer isn’t defined solely by his talent, but by a thousand other factors. And players like Cubarsí, Lamine, and Nico have a brilliant command of those situations. That’s the difference. They’re technically gifted, but the key is how they handle those moments. They play with great composure. At crucial moments, a player like Laporte brings that experience, and they complement each other fantastically. We’ve achieved a phenomenal balance. Between the four of us.” Cubarsi has shone for Spain so far at the tournament but De la Fuente has warned his players that Ronaldo will pose a threat. “I’m a huge fan of Cristiano, of people like him. Strong-willed, tireless. A role model. I’m in awe of him. It’s not the legacy he’s leaving, but the one he’s going to leave,” he added. “We have to be aware of him in every situation. It’s not about man-marking him, but we do have to be aware of him everywhere on the pitch. I’d prefer he didn’t play, but he’s going to play. We’ll enjoy watching one of the best players in history on the field.” Spain are yet to concede a goal at the tournament so far and know victory over Portugal will send them through to a quarter-final against USA or Belgium.

‘Make the defence suffer’ – Spain boss hoping for ‘great match’ from Lamine Yamal against Portugal
INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA - JULY 02: Lamine Yamal #19 of Spain looks on during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 match between Spain and Austria at Los Angeles Stadium on July 02, 2026 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Maja Hitij - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images) | FIFA via Getty Images Spain boss Luis de la Fuente wants to see Lamine Yamal make Portugal’s defence suffer on Monday when the two teams meet in the last 16 of the World Cup. The Spain boss was asked if he wants to see more defensive effort from Yamal but made it clear he wants to see the teenager causing problems for the Portugal backline. “Lamine is always willing to work harder, but we shouldn’t ask more of him. We’re all delighted with what he gives us. What we need to do is make the opposing defense suffer, knowing that if they take the initiative, everyone will have to suffer,” he told reporters. “I see him getting more motivated every day. Those of you who know him know this; Lamine loves responsibility, being in the spotlight, taking the initiative. That’s why we’re working on that aspect: 0% anxiety, 100% motivation. It’s a joy to watch him train. I’m sure it will be a great match for him; he has all the ingredients for it to be.” De la Fuente also previewed Yamal’s duel with Nuno Mendes and says the teenager shouldn’t worry about previous encounters against the PSG defender. “Nuno Mendes has surely been a tough nut to crack for many defenders; he’s very good. Just as Lamine has undoubtedly given many defenders a rough night,” he added. “But above all, he needs to avoid anxiety. He needs to focus on himself and the team, as he does. Every match is different. Let’s not assume that just because an opponent beats you once, they’ll always do it. Let’s hope he gives us a glorious afternoon.” Will Spain make it past Portugal and into the quarter-finals? Share your score predictions in the comments below!

‘Very bright future’ – Cristiano Ronaldo talks Lamine Yamal ahead of World Cup clash
MUNICH, GERMANY - JUNE 08: Lamine Yamal of Spain competes for the ball with Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal during the UEFA Nations League 2025 final match between Portugal and Spain at Munich Football Arena on June 08, 2025 in Munich, Germany. (Photo by Emmanuele Ciancaglini/Ciancaphoto Studio/Getty Images) | Getty Images Cristiano Ronaldo is set to face Lamine Yamal and Spain on Monday at World Cup 2026 and was asked about the Barcelona youngster ahead of the game. The Portugal veteran was asked for his thoughts on Yamal and offered up the following response at the press conference. “Lamine is a player with a very bright future. I didn’t see any of Spain’s matches, I only saw a bit of the game against Cape Verde, but as I said, he has a very bright future,” he told reporters. “But I see Spain as a whole. They’re very good, they play very well, and it will be very tough. Ronaldo was also asked about recent comments from Yamal about how he handles criticism and understands not all fans will like him. “I think the more prepared you are, the better you’ll survive a long football career. If you succumb to criticism, you’re finished. It’s normal; it’s your job. Some criticism is constructive, and other criticism is just to tear you apart,” he added. “I understand; it’s part of how the press sells the news. In your case, you have to get used to it if you want a long career. You have to focus on those who care about you. I learned that over the years. Difficult times will come, obviously; there will certainly be days when you don’t feel like working, and that’s normal. It’s part of our job.” Spain and Portugal meet in Dallas on Monday in what will be a repeat of last year’s Nations League final which Roberto Martinez’s side won on penalties.

Spain boss offers Lamine Yamal advice ahead of clash with Nuno Mendes and Portugal
BARCELONA, SPAIN - OCTOBER 01: Lamine Yamal of FC Barcelona runs with the ball whilst under pressure from Nuno Mendes of Paris Saint-Germain during the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 League Phase MD2 match between FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys on October 01, 2025 in Barcelona, Spain. (Photo by Judit Cartiel/Getty Images) | Getty Images Spain boss Luis de la Fuente has had some words of advice for Lamine Yamal ahead of Spain’s last 32 tie against Portugal at World Cup 2026. The game will see Yamal come up against Nuno Mendes once again. Yamal has said recently that Mendes is the toughest opponent he has faced, and De la Fuente has analyzed the match-up between the two players. “He has faced him with his club and his country. In that process of development that Lamine is still in, he knows that it is the big games against great opponents that lay down a marker: they’re the ones that shape and define you, show you a path,” he told The Guardian. “Lamine is a competitor and he will have the desire to remove the thorn from his side from that [Nations League] game. But a long time has passed since then and Lamine has grown a lot. Lamine is not the player he was a year ago; he’s another player, more mature, more assured, he reads the games better, logically. “With every stage of his development, every experience, he will be more complete. So what would I say to him? ‘Be yourself, enjoy football, with the responsibility that comes with it, the responsibility that you take on, but be yourself.’” Spain head into the match after an impressive win over Austria in the Round of 32, while Portugal booked their place with a 2-1 win over Croatia.

Luis de la Fuente: ‘I say this with the greatest respect: we have the best midfield in the world’
Spain’s manager answers your questions on advice for Lamine Yamal, the hardest thing about being a coach and how the current team compares to the winners of 2010 “You’ve filtered these, right?” Luis de la Fuente asks, looking at the laptop of your questions on the table in front of him, and cracking up. He takes his seat on the third floor of the Cotton Bowl, Dallas, where Spain have just finished training ahead of their last-16 meeting with Portugal. Some of the players are still out there in the sunshine, in the place where Bebeto rocked the baby in 1994. It is the morning after that Cape Verde performance against Argentina. The World Cup is a creator of memories, pictures in the mind that never go. We all have one, or more. “Because of what it means for Spain, it has to be [Andrés] Iniesta’s goal,” De la Fuente says. “It’s not very original but that’s the image of the World Cup for us. I would have been at home watching it. I have always been very into the national team. Whenever the Selección played, it was an event at my parents’ house. My parents would watch, my brothers and sisters, people would come round to watch. That’s in Haro, La Rioja. And then as a professional, wherever the game found me, I would watch it. I would enjoy every World Cup game, but especially the Spain ones. There are other images of the World Cup, but that’s the most powerful.” Continue reading...

Egypt beat Australia on penalties to make it through, with the Barcelona youngster appearing off the bench for the Pharoahs. Speaking afterwards, Abdelkarim admitted he was thrilled and revealed how he’s learning from team-mate Mo Salah. “It’s a fantastic feeling to qualify, and the entire nation is celebrating,” he told reporters. “I am learning and improving every single day, whether during training sessions or in matches. “Salah has been incredibly supportive since day one, constantly sharing his vast experience with everyone. I try to absorb as much as I can from him; his career is truly legendary, and sharing the pitch with him is a dream come true.” Next up for Egypt is a game against Argentina and Lionel Messi, with Abdelkarim fully focused on the task at hand. “We are fully prepared for any opponent in the Round of 16,” he added. “I am here only to play football and I don’t pay attention to the media noise or what is being said about me; my entire focus is strictly on the pitch.” Argentina will be favorites to win when the two teams play on Tuesday in Atlanta. The winners of the game will progress to a quarter-final tie against Switzerland or Colombia.

Argentina 3-2 Cape Verde (AET), World Cup 2026: Albiceleste survive extra-time thriller, advance to Round of 16
Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty Images The reigning World Cup champions are still alive and through to the Round of 16 thanks to a hard-fought 3-2 win in extra-time against tournament debutants Cape Verde. Argentina did not play their best game and found themselves in a massive batte against the tournament’s best story, but the Albiceleste found a way to win it after 120 minutes and are still alive in their title defense thanks to a goal and an assist from Lionel Messi. Reactions & Observations Argentina played at a very slow pace throughout the game, but the first half was one of full control that gave them the lead thanks to a brilliant long pass by Lisandro Martínez and an even better combination of first touch and finish from Lionel Messi. The Albiceleste could have pushed for a second but decided not to, and the game felt so easy that Argentina decided to slow it down even more and give Cape Verde the ball. The underdogs grew into the contest and found a shocking equalizer, and Vozinha put on a show in the second half to send the game to extra-time, which was in itself a gigantic achievement. When Lisandro Martínez scored two minutes into extra-time, it felt like Argentina would finally establish their superiority and kill off the game. Then Lopes Cabral scored one of the great goals in recent World Cup history, and Cape Verde came back to equalize for a second time in spectacular fashion. Messi’s corner found the head of Cristian Romero to give Argentina a third lead on the night in the second half of the extra period, and that was finally enough to put the game away and send the champions to the Round of 16. Cape Verde’s story in the World Cup ends the only way it could have: in epic fashion, with extraordinary spirit and resilience that kept them alive until the very end. No one will ever forget Vozinha and his buddies, and I’m not afraid to say it: whoever wins the World Cup, they will not be the People’s Champion. That title already belongs to Cape Verde. As for Argentina, this is an extremely concerning performance as they try to defend their title. Maybe this will serve as a wake-up call and we’ll see a better version of the Albiceleste, but they don’t inspire a lot of confidence right now.

Get a grip on Mora and take aerial route: what England can do to contain Mexico
Thomas Tuchel’s team can tame the co-hosts by slowing things down and isolating Raúl Jiménez One of the question marks over Mexico’s team before this World Cup centred on a shortage of obvious star quality. That accusation does not hold any more. Gilberto Mora does not turn 18 until October but has played with the authority of a veteran since Javier Aguirre answered a nation’s prayers and plunged him into the starting lineup. Against Czechia and Ecuador he made a huge difference, adding depth and daring to Mexico’s previously functional attacking patterns. He was happy to get stuck in against a midfield that included Chelsea’s Moisés Caicedo, knowing he had solid backup from the more defensive Érik Lira. Mora has been compared with Andrés Iniesta; he certainly has the former Barcelona player’s quick feet and deftness of touch, and England will have to be wary of his right-sided combinations with Jorge Sánchez and the winger Roberto Alvarado. Family ties and focus: Lamine Yamal carries burden of Spain’s World Cup dream
The 18-year-old is leading a nation’s effort to win a second title – to the delight of his three-year-old brother No one celebrated Spain’s last-32 win quite like Keyne. As the third goal against Austria went in, cameras caught Lamine Yamal’s younger brother, still only three, raising his arms and shouting: “Come on!” And so a million memes were launched in Los Angeles. Not long after, 30 metres below ground – Los Angeles Stadium had to be built from beneath the surface because of its proximity to LAX airport – Lamine Yamal stood on a platform before a scrum of cameras, microphones and mobile phones. Someone in there showed him the footage, asked what he thought about this small boy enjoying the childhood he never could, and there was a pause. “I don’t know …” Lamine Yamal said eventually. “It makes me emotional to see my brother happy, and my mum. He is everything to me. It’s like he is my son and I’m in love with him.” Continue reading...

Ramos sends Portugal into last 16 as VAR drama caps wild finish against Croatia
Rafael Leão dropped to his knees. His cross had just been flicked into the net by Gonçalo Ramos to take Portugal to the last 16 of the World Cup. Leão’s expression was not one of delight, but relief. Billed as the last dance for two footballing icons, it was Luka Modrić who, at the age of 40, had to leave what will surely be his final World Cup. Cristiano Ronaldo, meanwhile, plays on, and both scored and was even substituted in a match of endless incident. But this was a contest about more than two individuals, who were far from the most influential players on show, even if Ronaldo was bewilderingly named player of the match. Instead this was an old-fashioned World Cup battle between hardened teams, with momentum swinging first one way then the other then back again. It was also a match stuffed with incident, including – for the first time in World Cup history – a total of four disallowed goals, one of them denying Croatia an equaliser in the very last second of the match. Pep Guardiola present as Barcelona president Joan Laporta takes the reins
MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - MAY 25: Pep Guardiola, Manager of Manchester City, blows a kiss during the After Party Celebration to mark the achievements of Manchester City men’s, women’s and academy teams during the 25/26 season at The Co-op Live Arena on May 25, 2026 in Manchester, England. (Photo by Lewis Storey/Getty Images) | Getty Images Joan Laporta has started his fourth term as the club’s president. He was recently re-elected for another term, having been out of power between 2010 and 2021. After giving a speech at the official ceremony, Laporta went to the traditional match in honor of Johan Cruyff, Barcelona’s legendary player and manager. Another former Barcelona player and manager, Pep Guardiola, was in the house, too. The two posed for a picture and seemed on friendly terms. It was Laporta who first appointed Guardiola to become Barcelona’s manager in 2008; Guardiola left after Laporta was no longer president. When the manager left in 2012, there were rumors that he would not return to Barcelona while Laporta’s rivals were in charge. View this post on Instagram Guardiola managed Bayern Munich for three years and then Manchester City for four, winning many titles and accolades. He recently left City, and is taking a break from coaching. Laporta, meanwhile, has regained power at Can Barça. But there is no suggestion of a reunion, at least not yet, because Hansi Flick – who was also present at Laporta’s events – has solidified himself as Barcelona’s most successful coach in the post-Lionel Messi era. Flick, 61, has pledged that Barcelona will be his last team before retirement. Guardiola is about five years younger. Plenty of coaches have persisted into their mid-to-late 60s in club football, or even into their early 70s. A potential reunion between Guardiola and the club he’s said his heart has always belonged to is not impossible, especially if Laporta or his allies are in charge – although there is no clear path for it at the moment.

Mikel Oyarzabal at the double as Spain beat Austria and cruise into last 16
The group stage is something you have to do but the World Cup starts here, Lamine Yamal had insisted, and down on the Pacific that was how it played out. It wasn’t just that Spain defeated Austria to reach the last 16 against Portugal or Croatia, their first victory at the knockout stage since they were champions in 2010; it was that on an enjoyable sunny afternoon they were Spain again. Two goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and another from Pedro Porro completed a 3-0 win that was as recognisably theirs as their coach had requested beforehand. “Almost perfect,” Luis de la Fuente called it afterwards. For the fourth consecutive game Spain kept a clean sheet, Unai Simón breaking Iker Casillas’s 2010 title-winning record while Pau Cubarsí and Aymeric Laporte confirmed their status as the centre-back partnership of the tournament so far, but what really stood out was what was happening either side and in front of them. Spain 3-0 Austria, World Cup 2026: La Roja advance to Round of 16 with dominant win
Photo by Frederic J. Brown / AFP via Getty Images Spain have won their first World Cup knockout game since the 2010 Final and guaranteed safe passage to this year’s Round of 16 thanks to a comprehensive 3-0 win against Austria in Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon. La Roja saved their best performance of the tournament for the most decisive moment, playing a brilliant team game and brushing Austria aside with remarkable ease. Reactions & Observations For all the legitimate concerns about Spain after a poor group stage, their performance today shows why they were such strong pre-tournament favorites: La Roja truly dominated from start to finish and were better in every phase of the game. Spain easily broke Austria’s famous high press with great passing and movement, dominated midfield and were ruthless up front, and finally looked like a real candidate to win it all. Lamine Yamal was sensational in the first half, giving Konrad Laimer nightmares with one crazy nutmeg after another, and he deserved a goal but could not find the net. His second half was far more quiet, and he was clearly tired after the first 60 minutes. But his fitness levels are clearly improving, and he looks better and better as the tournament goes on. Every Barça player who started was very good, with Dani Olmo continuing his excellent tournament and showing why he deserves to remain a starter for the rest of the World Cup. But two Blaugrana stars stood out: Pau Cubarsí was simply spectacular both defensively and as a passer from the back, and Pedri had without a doubt his best game in the tournament, playing the exact role he does at Barça and absolutely dominating the middle of the park. But this was truly a collective show from Spain: every player in the starting XI was a 7 out of 10 or better, with special mentions to both full-backs, Pedro Porro and Marc Cucurella, and Mikel Oyarzabal, who scored two more goals and was fantastic with his movement and link-up play in the final third. Today’s game should end the debate about the right-back and attacking midfield positions: Porro is clearly a better fit for Spain’s style and system than Marcos Llorente, and Dani Olmo’s form is far superior to Mikel Merino. Spain have finally found their best version and their best lineup, and they look ready for what could be an epic Round of 16 clash with Portugal.

Austria boss outlines plan to stop Lamine Yamal ahead of Spain clash at World Cup 2026
Spain's forward #19 Lamine Yamal takes part in an MD-1 training session at Carson Sports Park in Carson on July 1, 2026, on the eve of the 2026 World Cup round of 32 football match between Spain and Austria. (Photo by Frederic J. Brown / AFP via Getty Images) | AFP via Getty Images Austria boss Ralf Rangnick says his team want to make sure Lamine Yamal sees as little of the ball as possible during Thursday’s last 32 clash with Spain at World Cup 2026. Yamal is expected to start the match for Luis de la Fuente’s side after recovering from his hamstring injury and will be expected to provide plenty of attacking inspiration. Rangnick was full of praise for Yamal before the game but made it clear his players are well aware of the threat he offers. “He is an excellent player, and he will be for the next 12, 13, 14 years or even longer if he stays healthy and keeps a good head on his shoulders,” he told reporters. “If you look at [Lionel] Messi, you can see he could play a lot of matches. He’s one of the players we’ll watch very closely tomorrow. We’ll try not to give him space when he starts dribbling. He’s a player all fans love to watch, but it’s our task to make sure he has the ball as little as possible.” Austria have come in for criticism during hte tournament but Rangnick thinks his team are doing OK. “Well, we’re at the end of a very long season, and the fatigue is noticeable; it’s a factor that doesn’t depend solely on us. We’ve been working here for a month and we want to continue for a few more days,” he added. “But I think we haven’t been too bad. We finished second in our group, we scored six goals, we celebrated with a party in the locker room… We’ll see what happens. “We’re not going to play against the Spain of 2008 or 2010, so… I find it interesting to think that this is the first match we’ve played against a European team in the World Cup. We’ve seen that there have been some surprises.” The winner of the tie between the two sides will go on to play Portugal or Croatia in the last 16.

Spain vs Austria, World Cup 2026: Team News, Match Preview
Photo by Justin Setterfield/Getty Images Spain vs Austria Competition/Round: 2026 World Cup, Round of 32 Spain Outs & Doubts: Yeremi Pino, Nico Williams (out), Victor Muñoz (doubt) Austria Outs & Doubts: None Date/Time: Thursday, July 2, 2026, 3pm ET, 12pm PT (USA), 9pm CET (Barcelona), 8pm BST/WAT (UK & Nigeria), 12.30am IST (India, Friday) Venue: SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles, United States Referee: Glenn Nyberg (SWE) How to watch on TV: FOX (USA), BBC One (UK), United8 Sports 1 (India), SuperSport (Nigeria), TVE La 1 (Spain), others How to watch online: FuboTV (USA), BBC iPlayer (UK), ZEE5 (India), DAZN (Spain), others Following a goalless draw against Uruguay to clinch top spot in Group H, Spain travel to Los Angeles to begin their journey in the World Cup 2026 knockout stages with a Round of 32 clash against fellow European rivals Austria at SoFi Stadium on Thursday afternoon. La Roja come into this one looking to book a spot in the Round of 16, and they’ll be facing an Austria side that almost found themselves out of the World Cup in the group stage finale against Algeria before a 96th minute equalizer made sure of a place in the knockouts in dramatic fashion. Ralf Rangnick’s team haven’t played their best stuff yet, but they are a very awkward opponent for Spain: Austria like to press high, have a ton of pace and skill all over the lineup, and are not afraid to play intense, attack-minded football against anyone. Spain forgot how to play football in their last game against Uruguay and had a very concerning performance, but there is still optimism they will be able to discover their best version in time to compete in the knockouts. Lamine Yamal had more minutes under his belt in the group finale and will hopefully look less rusty and more match-ready this time around, but the entire team around him needs to play much better if Spain want to win this one. World Cup knockout football has not been kind to Spain outside of their 2010 success in South Africa, and Austria are the perfect kind of opponent who can catch La Roja off guard if they are not at it from the start. This needs to be a complete game from a team still in search of a great performance that will truly announce them as contenders. The Round of 32 has already given us plenty of reasons to believe no game is ever over and no opponent is easy (except Sweden), and a huge upset is right around the corner (bye, Germany). Spain cannot take any second of this for granted. Let’s dance. (Be careful, Lamine.) POSSIBLE LINEUPS Spain (4-2-3-1): Simón; Porro, Cubarsí, Laporte, Cucurella; Rodri, Pedri; Yamal, Olmo, Baena; Oyarzabal Austria (4-2-3-1): Schlager; Posch, Lienhart, Alaba, Mwene; Seiwald, Schlager; Schmid, Laimer, Sabitzer; Arnautovic PREDICTION Despite their big favorite status for this tournament, history says Spain don’t actually perform well in World Cup knockout football. There is no chance this will be a cakewalk, and they’ll need to dig deep to find the right formula to win and advance. I expect a tense game that might go all the way to penalties, but I’m picking La Roja to win this in 90 minutes: 2-1 Spain.

‘Lamine Yamal at 70% is already the best’ – Gavi backs Barcelona team-mate to light up World Cup with Spain
Spain's midfielder #09 Gavi (up) and Spain's forward #19 Lamine Yamal (R) shake hands during a substitution during the 2026 World Cup Group H football match between Spain and Cape Verde at the Atlanta Stadium in Atlanta on June 15, 2026. (Photo by Roberto SCHMIDT / AFP via Getty Images) | AFP via Getty Images Barcelona star Gavi says Lamine Yamal may not have hit top form at World Cup 2026 yet but is getting better all the time. Yamal is back from several weeks out with a hamstring injury and is currently preparing for a last 32 tie against Austria. Gavi says that the teenager may not be at his very best just yet but will improve as the tournament goes on. “He might not be 100% yet. But Lamine at 70% is already the best. As the matches go by, he’ll only get better,” he told La Vanguardia. Yamal has been in the media glare throughout the tournament already, with Gavi admitting his Barca team-mate has no problem handling the pressure. “Sometimes I tell him I don’t understand how he does it, because he never gets overwhelmed by people,” he added. “If I were him, I’d find it incredibly difficult, and I’d get stressed out, but Lamine handles it all very well and seems completely unfazed. It’s a really great quality of his. Spain are yet to show their best at the World Cup so far but Gavi says winning is all that matters and is hoping he can get more game time after dropping out of the XI for the last two matches. “This is the World Cup, and the level of competition is at its highest. In the end, the important thing is to win, whether you play well or badly, especially now that the do-or-die matches are coming up,” he added. “I’m here for the manager. I have a lot of faith in him, and I know he has a lot of faith in me. I’m here for whatever the team needs me to do, whether that’s starting, playing five minutes, or whatever. In a World Cup, the important thing is to be a team player.”

Frenkie de Jong’s World Cup dreams end as Netherlands dumped out by Morocco
MONTERREY - Frenkie de Jong or the Netherlands during the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout phase match between the Netherlands and Morocco at the Monterrey Stadium on June 29, 2026, in Monterrey, Mexico. KOEN VAN WEEL / ANP (Photo by ANP via Getty Images) | ANP via Getty Images Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong is heading home from World Cup 2026 after his Netherlands team were knocked out in the Round of 32 by Morocco. Koeman’s side went ahead when Cody Gakpo scored the opener for the Dutch side. The forward then couldn’t hold back the tears, scoring just days after it was announced he and his partner had lost their unborn son The goal looked set to send the Netherlands through to the last 16 but Issa Diop popped up with an equaliser for Morocco in the 91st minute to send the game into extra-time. After a goalless extra 30 minutes, it was onto penalties and victory for Morocco. Both teams missed twice before Crysencio Summerville saw another effort saved and it was left to Ismael Saibari to convert the winning penalty and send Morocco through to a last 16 tie with co-hosts Canada. It’s a desperately disappointing defeat for the Netherlands and De Jong. The midfielder will now enjoy some time off on holiday before returning to Barcelona for pre-season.

Marcos Llorente: I ask Lamine Yamal what he needs from me
ZAPOPAN, MEXICO - JUNE 26: Lamine Yamal #19 of Spain reacts during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match between Uruguay and Spain at Guadalajara Stadium on June 26, 2026 in Zapopan, Mexico. (Photo by David Ramos/Getty Images) | Getty Images The Spanish national team is preparing their first knockout match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Austria are the opponents, and while La Roja are favorites, nothing is assured. Spain struggled to get going at times so far, particularly in a 0-0 draw with Cape Verde. Part of the issue has been their star man missing a huge proportion of minutes as he recovers from an injury. Now, with Lamine Yamal fit and firing, expectations have shifted. It was with that backdrop that Marcos Llorente, who could start at right-back for Spain, talked to the media before the match. “I’m getting to know Lamine little by little. He doesn’t need much help. Sometimes, for instance, it’s actually worse to join him in the attack because you end up drawing another defender his way,” Llorente said. Yamal plays as a right winger, which makes the right-back his natural partner in attack. “He’s the one who makes the difference; there are moments when you need to overlap him and others when you shouldn’t.” That’s been a learning curve for Llorente, who plays for Atlético Madrid. Atléti’s way is based on tough defending and counterattacking. Yamal plays for Barcelona, who depend on possession and methodical buildup. Spain are not a direct calque of Barça, but their style is much more similar to the Catalans’. “Atlético’s style of play has nothing to do with the national team’s. They are two different philosophies and distinct ways of attacking,” Llorente, who plays as a midfielder sometimes, mused. Regardless, it’s clear that he sees himself as part of the supporting cast for the 18-year-old star. “I exchange views with Lamine and ask him what he needs. We even talk during the match. The more communication there is, the better things go. Luis de la Fuente shows us videos to help us build chemistry and holds us to high standards, just like everyone else.” Even so, Llorente maintains it’s not just about the star player, adding: “I don’t think stars win without their team. They need their team behind them. They are important, but this isn’t a World Cup for stars alone.”

Yet it was worth the wait for Jesse Marsch’s side as they kept their World Cup dreams alive with a narrow win. With the bracket set is Lionel Messi destined for another World Cup trophy?
ARLINGTON, TEXAS - JUNE 27: Lionel Messi #10 of Argentina celebrates scoring his team's third goal during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group J match between Jordan and Argentina at Dallas Stadium on June 27, 2026 in Arlington, Texas. (Photo by David Ramos/Getty Images) | Getty Images We can all take a deep breath, and a quick rest, with the group stage of this electric World Cup officially over. The bracket is set, and a de facto new competition will now begin. So far, it’s been not only country versus country, but global superstar versus global superstar, and who’s leading the way with sjx goals in three group stage games? Lionel Messi. Who else? The world’s greatest of all time has transformed into an ageless wonder. It was enough, we all thought, that the legend finally achieved World Cup glory in Qatar. Surely that was the right time to call it quits on and walk off into the sunset. Messi knew something instinctively the doubters did not. His story is not over. He decided to make the move to Miami not only for a chance to make it big in America, and win an MLS trophy. That mission he already accomplished. The real objective was to lead a North American “soccer” renaissance heading into the 2026 World Cup. The plan could not be going any better so far. Messi is dominating the tournament individually, and Argentina again look like the favorites to go all the way, and become back-to-back champions. Looking at the bracket, one side looks to be stronger than the other. Argentina’s path to the final is quite favorable. They would be wise to not sleep on Cabo Verde, but assuming they take care of business, after that it’s Australia or Egypt in the Round of 16, followed by a possible quarter-final matchup against Colombia. Then, a semi-final against perhaps England, Brazil, or Norway. If you’re Argentina and Messi, you have to like your odds. Maybe none of this is too surprising. Messi is getting towards the very end of his career, but his playing style hasn’t changed much over the past decade. For club, but especially for country, he has teammates who are willing to run through a wall for him. Messi’s job is to be lethal in front of goal, that’s it. For the Barcelona legend, that’s not a problem, it’s second nature. There are many reasons to be excited about the global celebration of the beautiful game. The world’s best players are showing up, and underdog nations are too. With so much darkness, uncertainty, and polarization around the world, the competition is a powerful force that brings people together, and puts into perspective our common humanity. We respond to the stories at a human level. It’s also where legends are made, and legacies are cemented. For Messi, imagine what another World Cup trophy would mean when the final history of his career is written. There will never be another player like him. Let’s enjoy every game while we can.

Jordan 1-3 Argentina, World Cup 2026: Lionel Messi scores again as Albiceleste finish group stage with perfect record
Photo by Ryan Pierse - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images The reigning world champions look ready for the knockout rounds as Argentina finished their World Cup 2026 group stage campaign with a comfortable 3-1 win against newcomers Jordan in Dallas on Saturday’s Group J finale. With top spot in the group already sealed the Albiceleste had a reserve team on the pitch but still dominated the contest, and Lionel Messi came off the bench to score another goal and continue his amazing run in the tournament. Reactions & Observations Lionel Scaloni used the dead rubber feel of the group finale to play his reserves and make a few personnel and tactical experiments, and Argentina were in control throughout the game. The early goals by Giovani Lo Celso (a great free-kick) and Lautaro Martínez helped seal the win without much drama, and another great free-kick by Messi made it a comfortable scoreline. Messi has six goals in three games, and his low free-kick around the wall was just nasty. This is his World Cup so far, and he looks completely pressure-free and ready for the knockouts. Jordan made themselves proud with a solid performance, and goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila let them down by literally hiding behind the wall and conceding two free-kicks in horrendous fashion. Speaking of horrendous… Julián Álvarez. Yikes. Just a big old YIKES. I am personally a big fan and I’m in favor of his arrival at Camp Nou (at the right price), but his World Cup so far is the stuff of nightmares. I understand he’s still not 100% and gaining rhythm, but still. YIKES. Argentina will now face the tournament’s best story in Cape Verde on Friday’s highly-anticipated Round of 32 clash, and the Albiceleste cannot take it for granted but will be favorites to advance and continue their title defense.

Who will Spain play in World Cup 2026 Round of 32?
ZAPOPAN, MEXICO - JUNE 26: Lamine Yamal #19 of Spain reacts during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match between Uruguay and Spain at Guadalajara Stadium on June 26, 2026 in Zapopan, Mexico. (Photo by David Ramos/Getty Images) | Getty Images Spain beat Uruguay 1-0 at World Cup 2026 on Friday to secure their place in the Round of 32 after finishing top of Group H. La Roja will now go on to play either Austria or Algeria in the first knockout round at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on July 2nd. The two sides play later today and are vying for the runners-up spot in Group H behind winners Argentina. Yet there’s a theory that both teams would probably rather finish third. While second place in the group will secure a game against Spain, third place will bring a potentially easier match-up. Both managers have been asked about the scenario and denied they wanted to avoid winning their final group game. “No, definitely not,” said Austria boss Ralf Rangnick. “Once we start we will know but it will not influence our match. … If we have a draw tomorrow, we can go on, but we cannot go into a match and just say, ‘We’ll play for a draw.'” Algeira coach Vladimir Petkovic also said his team will be going for the win. “There is no ‘if’ or ‘but’ in football, we have to face our opponents always the same way, with a strong desire to perform well and a great will to win,” he said. “We’ll see what happens after the match, but to advance and realize our ambitions we must first earn it by trying to win the game.” Who would you rather see Spain face in the Round of 32? Ronald Araujo out of World Cup 2026 without playing a single minute for Uruguay
ZAPOPAN, MEXICO - JUNE 26: Ronald Araujo #4 of Uruguay warms up prior to the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match between Uruguay and Spain at Guadalajara Stadium on June 26, 2026 in Zapopan, Mexico. (Photo by Ryan Pierse - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images) | FIFA via Getty Images Spain’s win over Uruguay has sent Marcelo Bielsa’s side out of World Cup 2026 and means that Ronald Araujo is the first Barcelona player to be eliminated from the tournament. Araujo will depart the World Cup without playing a single minute for Uruguay. The defender sustained an injury in training before the start of the tournament and simply didn’t recover in time to feature. The defender has now been to two World Cups but is yet to feature at all. He was also part of the squad in Qatar in 2022 but, once again, injury meant that he didn’t see any game time. Araujo’s brother was critical of Uruguay after the Barcelona star was sidelined ahead of the start of the tournament in what’s been a difficult World Cup for Bielsa’s men. Uruguay managed just two points and scored only three goals in three games, finishing behind Cape Verde in the standings in Group G. There were also rumors of unrest in the camp ahead of the Spain game, with players reportedly unhappy with Bielsa’s training methods and tactics. Uruguay’s early exit ends what’s been a difficult campain for Araujo. He took a mental health break from Barcelona mid-way through the season before returning to action but only played a bit-part role in the final weeks of the campaign.

Pau Cubarsi hit by horror challenge during Spain’s win over Uruguay at World Cup 2026
ZAPOPAN, MEXICO - JUNE 26: Agustin Canobbio #14 of Uruguay tackles Pau Cubarsi #22 of Spain resulting in a red card during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match between Uruguay and Spain at Guadalajara Stadium on June 26, 2026 in Zapopan, Mexico. (Photo by Luke Hales/Getty Images) | Getty Images Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi was on the receiving end of a horror challenge by Agustin Canobbio at the end of Spain’s win over Uruguay at World Cup 2026. Canobbio was shown a straight red card for an awful lunge on the defender that resulted in angry scenes as tempers flared at the end of the game. Fortunately for Barca, Cubarsi does seem to have avoided an injury. Canobbio had earlier escaped a sanction for a really poor challenge on Pedri but was then handed his marching orders late on as Uruguay finished with 10. The midfielder tried to defend himself after the game, saying: “I didn’t see the replay afterward, but it was clear I didn’t go in with a studs-up challenge; I felt his foot from the side. These are intense, dynamic matches. “We need to be very self-critical and correct many things internally. The team needs to stay united and keep moving forward.” The result means Uruguay are out of World Cup 2026, while Spain progress but now have injury concerns over Nico Williams and Yeremy Pino.

Uruguay 0-1 Spain, World Cup 2026: La Roja advance to knockout rounds after hard-fought win in Group H finale
Photo by Pablo Garcia/Soccrates/Getty Images One of the most anticipated matches in the World Cup 2026 group stage turned out to be one of the worst as Spain and Uruguay played over 90 minutes of horrendous football that ended with a 1-0 win for La Roja after a horrific goalkeeping error. The game had zero quality and way too much physicality, and a Spain team that had its best players on the pitch put on a very concerning performance ahead of the knockout rounds. Reactions & Observations There are no words to describe just how bad this game was. Both teams looked wildly disorganized, offered no quality in midfield and forward areas and were more interested in kicking each other than playing football. Álex Baena’s goal with one of the worst howlers in recent history from Fernando Muslera was fitting for what we saw for the rest of the game. Uruguay were especially awful, and they deservedly exit the tournament after playing perhaps the worst game out of any of the 48 teams in this World Cup. It was sad to see a Marcelo Bielsa team look this bad and completely lose their heads, and the late red card for Agustín Canobbio was a symbol of a team that played dirty and not like a team that wanted to win. As for Spain, this was an extremely concerning performance. Luis de la Fuente’s lineup choices and substitutions were all wrong, and the coach looks extremely confused at the biggest stage in the game. Austria will likely be their next opponent and have a great coach in Ralf Rangnick that will ask a lot more out of La Roja than Uruguay did, and Spain simply don’t look ready for World Cup knockout football. I am a Barcelona fan and love him to death, but Pedri’s World Cup so far has simply not been good. He looks slow and way too safe with his passing, and hasn’t been up for the physical battle either. Maybe he’s saving his best for the biggest games, but this is not the Pedri we’ve seen for the last two years. Lamine Yamal will get a lot of stick for what was admittedly a bad night, but he is clearly nowhere near 100% and it was wild to see him play 75 minutes when he already looked exhausted by halftime. Maybe he has to play the extra minutes to be ready for the knockouts, but Yamal is out of rhythm and tired. Not very encouraging. We also had the customary big miss by Ferran Torres in the second half, who somehow hit the bar with the entire goal wide open in front of him. His World Cup is definitely not helping his case with Barça fans who are skeptical of his abilities to be the main striker next season. If there is one positive from this game, though, it’s Pau Cubarsí. His entire group stage has been excellent, but he looked more than ready for Uruguay’s physicality and gave his all in the battle. Well done, young man.

Luis Suárez speaks out on Lamine Yamal-Lionel Messi comparisons at Barcelona
(COMBO) This combination of file pictures created on November 14, 2025, shows Spain's forward #19 Lamine Yamal (L) walking onto the pitch prior to the UEFA Nations League semi-final football match between Spain and France in Stuttgart, southwestern Germany, on June 5, 2025, and Argentina's forward #10 Lionel Messi looking on during the 2026 FIFA World Cup South American qualifiers football match between Argentina and Colombia at the Mas Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires on June 10, 2025. The Finalissima between Lionel Messi's Argentina and Lamine Yamal's Spain will be played in March on neutral ground, said CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez on November 20, 2025, in Asuncion, speaking to AFP and a Paraguayan media outlet. (Photo by Luis ROBAYO and Franck FIFE / AFP via Getty Images) | AFP via Getty Images Inter Miami star Luis Suárez has given his take on comparisons made between his friend and teammate, Lionel Messi, and the teenager who has lit the world on fire, Lamine Yamal. “I always say comparisons are unpleasant,” the Uruguayan told El Larguero. “It’s a different era, a different kind of football.” Still, it’s hard not to get caught up in the hype. Both Messi and Yamal come from La Masia, FC Barcelona’s academy. Both are wearing #19 in their first FIFA World Cup, and both scored their first World Cup goal aged 18 years, 11 months. Plus, there’s a legendary old picture of a young Messi, still in the early stages of his career, bathing a then-unknown baby who would grow up to become a world-famous star – Yamal. “They are players who are very different from the rest,” Suárez admitted, despite his resistance to compare the two. “Leo, from when he started, you could see that. Lamine, since he started, you can see it.” Suárez said that he, along with Spain, are going to keep growing in the tournament. “He’s a player who is taking the responsibility, taking on what is expected of him from Spain.” Still, the Uruguay and FC Barcelona legend noted that the true leader of La Roja is elsewhere. “Pedri for me is the best of the best. Spain depends a little more on Pedri than Lamine,” he said, although he noted this isn’t always the case. Yamal made his first start for Spain against Saudi Arabia following la roja‘s disappointing draw against Cape Verde. Yamal scored as the Spanish cruised to a 4-0 victory. “Lamine came in the other day, and they depended much more on him. You could see he could do things differently, because Pedri did not have as much space. If you give Pedri space, you know he will make the difference,” Suárez said.

Dumfries and the Netherlands storm into the knockout phase
KANSAS CITY, UNITED STATES - JUNE 25: (L-R) Denzel Dumfries of Holland, Mohamed Amine Ben Hamida of Tunisia during the World Cup match between Tunisia v Holland at the Kansas City Stadium on June 25, 2026 in Kansas City United States (Photo by Roy Lazet/Soccrates/Getty Images) | Getty Images The Netherlands took their 2026 World Cup tally into double figures as Brian Brobbey and Jan Paul van Hecke struck in a comfortable win over Tunisia. Level on points with Japan, the Oranje needed to better their rivals’ result against Sweden to secure top spot in Group F. They started perfectly, Denzel Dumfries’ cross turned into his own net by Ellyes Skhiri after three minutes, before Brobbey volleyed home Virgil van Dijk’s flick four minutes later. Skhiri redeemed himself with a 51st-minute block, and Tunisia briefly hoped when Hazem Mastouri headed in Hannibal Mejbri’s corner. The revival lasted eight minutes, however, as Van Hecke glanced in Tijjani Reijnders’ corner via an Anis Ben Slimane deflection. Denzel Dumfries was a relentless attacking threat down the right, leading all players with eight touches in the box and four shots, generating 0.75 in combined xG and xA. His delivery created the opening own goal, though his crossing was a bit wayward at 1/6. He maintained possession well, with 91% passing accuracy, and added four defensive recoveries.

‘He’s a support and a headache’ – Pedri talks Barcelona team-mates Gavi and Ferran Torres
CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE - JUNE 22: Pedri and Gavi of Spain arrive to the field prior to the training at Baylor School on June 22, 2026 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. (Photo by Florencia Tan Jun/Getty Images) | Getty Images Pedri has been chatting about some of his Barcelona team-mates while on international duty with Spain at World Cup 2026. There are eight Barcelona players in the squad for the tournament in the USA, Mexico and Canada, including Gavi who made the cut after returning from a serious knee injury. Gavi is one of the most popular players in the dressing room, who loves to joke around but is also known for his tenacity and energy on the pitch. Pedri admits that his team-mate can certainly be a handful. “I think he’s both a support and a headache. There are days when I want to kill him and others when I love him a lot!” he told RTVE. Pedri also spoke about Ferran Torres and is confident the Barcelona forward will get off the mark at World Cup 2026 soon. “Ferri’ is a player who can contribute a lot to the team. (Against Saudi Arabia) I was hoping that goal would go in, I’m sure it will come, he’ll score important goals. We help each other out,” he added.

‘No reason to change’ – Dani Olmo says Lamine Yamal ‘hasn’t asked’ for his No.10 shirt with Spain
ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JUNE 21: Lamine Yamal #19 of Spain celebrates goal with his teammates Pedro Porro #12 of Spain and Dani Olmo #10 of Spain during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match between Spain and Saudi Arabia at Atlanta Stadium on June 21, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Robin Alam/ISI Photos/ISI Photos via Getty Images) | ISI Photos via Getty Images Dani Olmo says he’s happy to keep on wearing the No. 10 shirt for Spain and has explained that Lamine Yamal hasn’t asked to swap with him. Yamal has taken over the No. 10 shirt for Barcelona this season but is wearing 19 for the national team. Olmo wears the 10 and says he deserves the iconic number. “Look, he hasn’t asked me for it either. But I think it’s a number I’ve earned, one I like, and one we wore in the European Championship we won. I don’t see any reason to change it,” he told AS. Olmo also spoke about playing alongside with Yamal and says the two possess a great relationship on the pitch. “I’ve played with him for a long time, I know what he likes, I know what motivates him too, which isn’t just one-on-one, but one-on-two,” he added. “And in that sense, I try to give him more space. Sometimes I move closer to play a one-two, to keep the ball flowing. And I always give him my full support.” Yamal scored his first World Cup goal last time out against Saudi Arabia and will be hoping to add to his tally on Friday against Mexico.

Harry Kane turns attention to Panama with England focused on bigger picture
Striker scored a hat-trick against Saturday’s opponents at 2018 World Cup and he is scenting another Golden Boot opportunity The record books show that when Harry Kane last faced Panama, he scored a hat-trick and England won 6-1. It was the 2018 World Cup and the goals gave him an unassailable grip on the Golden Boot. It was the second group game and victory ensured England’s safe passage into the knockout rounds. What not everyone remembers – although Kane certainly does – is how he completed the hat-trick. It was with one of the luckiest goals of his career. The England captain knew nothing about it because he was facing away from the ball. He merely felt Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s shot from outside the area flick off his heel and loop over the wrong-footed goalkeeper. His first two had come from the penalty spot. “A couple of pens and a lucky goal,” Kane said. “It wasn’t my most beautiful hat-trick. I’ll take that again on Saturday, for sure.” Continue reading...

Daniel Muñoz breaks DR Congo resistance to send Colombia into World Cup knockouts
As anybody who’s ever encountered Mexican traffic jams will know, there are times when it feels you’ll never get through the impasse. Colombia must have felt the same about the DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi, who made an outrageous string of saves that looked like earning his side an unlikely point. But the Le Havre keeper was finally beaten, a deflection giving Colombia their second win and securing their passage to the last 32. It was Daniel Muñoz who got the goal, the Crystal Palace right-back’s second in as many games, as he cut in from the right with half the DRC side seemingly distracted by a penalty appeal at the edge of the box. His shot flicked off Steve Kapuadi, wrong-footing Mpasi and going in at the near post. “Our goalkeeper was excellent today,” said the DRC coach Sébastien Desabre. “But I’m not surprised. He has been playing well for us.” Continue reading...

(Photo by Jewel SAMAD / AFP via Getty Images) | AFP via Getty Images Barcelona star Raphinha has sent out a strong message on social media and vowed to return as soon as possible after sustaining another hamstring injury at World Cup 2026 with Brazil. Raphinha was forced out of Brazil’s win over Haiti and it’s not known yet if he will be able to play again at the tournament for the Selecao. Here’s what he’s had to say on Instagram. View this post on Instagram “I chose this photo first because it reminds me of where it all began. The boy who dreamed of wearing the shirt of the Brazilian National Team is still here. With the same dreams, the same gratitude and the same desire to represent our country. “I love football, I love what I do and I love wearing the shirt of the Brazilian National Team. Whoever knows me knows how much I demand of myself and how much I work every day to evolve. And that’s never going to change. I’m going to do everything in my power to recover and get back as soon as possible. “I want to be by my teammates’ side, fight for our goals and continue to give everything to honor this jersey and bring joy to the Brazilian fans.” Barcelona are believed to be concerned that Raphinha could suffer another relapse if he returns too quickly, with the Brazilian thought to be eyeing a potential return in the quarter-finals if his team make it that far.

The Barcelona Blaugranes World Cup 2026 Week One Survey: The Results
KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI - JUNE 16: Lionel Messi #10 of Argentina celebrates scoring his team's third and hat trick goal during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group J match between Argentina and Algeria at Kansas City Stadium on June 16, 2026 in Kansas City, Missouri. (Photo by Michael Steele/Getty Images) | Getty Images We recently asked you to vote in our latest survey following the first round of matches at World Cup 2026 as part of a new SB Nation Reacts series. Our mission was to find out which player and team had impressed you the most with their performances in the opening round of games at the tournament in the USA, Mexico and Canada. And there will be absolutely no prizes for guessing that a certain Lionel Messi ran away with the vote after scoring a hat-trick for Argentina against Algeria. Argentina’s win over Algeria was also voted as readers’ favorite match of Week One, beating England’s dramatic 4-2 win over Croatia into second place. Third place went to the USMNT’s impressive win over Paraguay. And the final question was which team BB readers felt put in the worst showing so far at World Cup 2026. Spain may have been held to a shock goalless draw by Cape Verde but Luis de la Fuente’s side were beaten to top spot by Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal and their 1-1 draw with DRC Congo. Once again a big thank you to everyone who took the time to take part in our survey. There may well be more to follow in the future. This poll and the graphics are sponsored by Fanduel.

‘Truly spectacular’ – Lionel Messi thrilled to beat World Cup scoring record but ‘really angry’ to miss penalty
Argentina's forward #10 Lionel Messi reacts after missing a penalty kick during the 2026 World Cup Group J football match between Argentina and Austria at the Dallas Stadium in Arlington on June 22, 2026. (Photo by Paul ELLIS / AFP via Getty Images) | AFP via Getty Images Lionel Messi was a happy man after scoring twice for Argentina against Austria to secure a place in the knockout stages of World Cup 2026 for the defending champions. The goals means that Messi is now the World Cup’s outright leading scorer, surpassing Miroslav Klose, and the GOAT is happy to add another record to his collection. “I’m really happy about the victory, especially the win. It was a very important victory, very hard-fought and well-earned. It gives us peace of mind for what’s to come. This is the World Cup, all the matches are very close, very intense,” he told TyC Sports. “It ‘s truly spectacular how it all unfolded. Today I had the penalty that could have increased our lead, but if I had scored it, perhaps I wouldn’t have gotten the other two either. You never know, but I’m happy with the result, the team’s performance, and their work.” Messi also missed a penalty in the game, before scoring the opener, and admitted he was pretty frustrated with his effort. “As I just said, it’s one step at a time. It’s a long road, it’s difficult, and we’re preparing like we prepare for every match. I’m experiencing it as something special, as I always have,” he added. “I enjoy playing and having a good time on the field. There was a moment when I was really angry about the penalty, but we were able to turn it around, take the lead, and secure the three points, which is the most important thing.” Argentina wrap up their group campaign against Jordan on Saturday and will potentially play Spain or Uruguay in the last 32.

Argentina 2-0 Austria, World Cup 2026: Lionel Messi makes history (again) as Albiceleste seal Round of 32 spot
Photo by Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA/Getty Images Reigning world champions Argentina have guaranteed safe passage through to the knockout rounds of World Cup 2026 thanks to a hard-fought 2-0 win against Austrlia in Dallas on Monday. The Albiceleste kept another clean sheet and looked solid all game, and Lionel Messi made history again as he scored his 17th and 18th goals to take sole possession of first place on the list of all-time World Cup goalscorers. Reactions & Observations Messi was once again, two days before his 39th birthday, the best player on the pitch by far, and despite missing an early penalty and wasting two other good chances there was never any doubt about his ability to break Klose’s record. The goal that did it was a classic Messi finish from his favorite spot just inside the box on the left side, and the second was outrageous as he outworked the entire Austrian defense to find the back of the net in added time. The rest of the team has a very clear goal of working their socks off to make sure Messi can get to the best possible positions to be decisive, and the midfield trio of Rodrigo De Paul, Alexis Mac Allister and Enzo Fernández gave their all with and without the ball. Thiago Almada and Lautaro Martínez also deserve honorable mentions for their workrate out of possession and big contributions in attack, including an outstanding dummy by Almada in the build-up to Messi’s record-breaking first goal. Cristian Romero’s possible knee injury might be a reason for concern and should be monitored in the next few days, but Argentina will now be able to rest many of their key starters in the group finale against Jordan, the weakest team in the group, and Romero will likely be back for the knockout rounds. But the story can only be about Messi, who is clearly enjoying the first World Cup of his career where he has absolutely no pressure to win and can just go out and play. He has scored all five of Argentina’s goals and could have scored seven or eight already, and his control of the game at his age is simply astounding. How lucky are we to have been alive to witness the Lionel Messi Era.

The enjoyment and fun he plays with,” Rooney told the BBC. “What he does for that Spain team, there’s a lot of young players in that Spain team and he give them that confidence. “They won the Euros with him as a 16 year old, now he’s matured as a player, which seems crazy to say about an 18-year-old, but he gives every other player on that pitch for Spain a confidence and belief that they can go on and win this World Cup.” Spain now go on to play Uruguay in the final group game and will be aiming to progress as group winners.

Bielsa has accepted responsibility for the situation and admitted that “something is wrong.” The Uruguay boss has now been asked if Araujo or Giorgian De Arrascaeta will return against Spain and ruled both players out: “They have no chance of playing against Spain,” he told a press conference. Uruguay have drawn both their games so far, against Cape Verde and New Zealand, and can still make it to the knockouts. However, they will need a result against Spain when the two teams meet on Friday in Mexico which is not an easy ask. ‘Dream come true’ – Barcelona star Lamine Yamal reacts to scoring first World Cup goal in Spain win
ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JUNE 21: Lamine Yamal #19 of Spain celebrates scoring his team's first goal during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match between Spain and Saudi Arabia at Atlanta Stadium on June 21, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Patrick Smith - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images) | FIFA via Getty Images Lamine Yamal admitted he was in dreamland after scoring his first ever World Cup goal in Spain’s 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia on Sunday. The teenager was in the starting XI for the match for the first time at the World Cup and took just 11 minutes to score by sliding home at the far post to convert a cross from Mikel Oyarzabal. “Very special, I’ve always dreamed of being at a World Cup and being able to score in my first game as a starter is a dream come true. I watched the other World Cup in class and being able to score here with my mother and my family is a dream come true,” he said. Yamal also gave credit to his team-mates and says the quality within the squad is why they are one of the favorites for victory at the tournament. “Rodri is a Ballon d’Or winner, Pedri is, for me, the best midfielder in the world, we have Nico, Olmo, Oyarzabal…” he added. “They’re all very good. If I can help in any way, that’s what I’ll be here for. We’re world-class players, that’s why we’re favorites.” Spain now go on to a final group game against Uruguay on Friday in Mexico.

Spain 4-0 Saudi Arabia, World Cup 2026: Lamine Yamal shines as La Roja dominate second group game
Photo by Juan Luis Diaz/Quality Sport Images/Getty Images Spain bounced back in impressive fashion from their disappointing World Cup 2026 opening draw against Cape Verde with a dominant 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia in Atlanta on Sunday afternoon in their second game in Group H. La Roja showed why they’re one of the tournament’s favorites with a fantastic attacking performance led by Mikel Oyarzabal and Lamine Yamal, who scored his first career World Cup goal on his first start and needed just 45 minutes on the pitch to show his brilliance. Reactions & Observations Spain had a big change in attitude and personnel compared to the first game: Luis de la Fuente started more attack-minded players and the team was more aggressive and dynamic in all phases of their offense, and Saudi Arabia’s 5-4-1 low block was easily broken down early and often by the La Roja attack. Lamine Yamal was on it from the start, with direct dribbling, shots from distance and a very smart run at the far post to tap home a great assist from Mikel Oyarzabal, who was the other star of the opening period with two goals as Spain sealed the win with three goals in the first 25 minutes. De La Fuente kept his word and replaced Yamal at halftime as he continues to build up his fitness post-injury, but Lamine’s performance in the first half showed why he’s Spain’s best player and biggest hope for a deep World Cup run. Spain are quite simply a whole different (and better) team with Yamal on it. Another Barça player who had a very good afternoon in Atlanta was Dani Olmo, who earned the starting spot after a strong showing against Cape Verde and repaid his manager’s faith with a great all-around performance in midfield, including an assist and some excellent touches and decisions in tight spaces. The second half was naturally played at a much slower pace, but Spain still scored a fourth and had other chances throughout the period, but Ferran Torres missed some good opportunities and had a goal disallowed for a tight offside in added time. The overall performance at the end of 90 minutes was still very good, however, and Spain showed their strength in a big way in a must-win game.

‘They watch but they don’t see’- Frenkie de Jong blasts his critics after Netherlands win
HOUSTON, TEXAS - JUNE 20: Frenkie De Jong of Netherlands looks on during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group F match between Netherlands and Sweden at Houston Stadium on June 20, 2026 in Houston, United States. (Photo by Europa Press Sports/Europa Press via Getty Images) | Europa Press via Getty Images Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong has hit back at his critics in the wake of the Netherlands’ 5-1 win over Sweden at World Cup 2026. The midfielder shrugged off some minor physical issues to play an hour in an impressive win for Ronald Koeman’s side. Afterwards he addressed criticism that he does not contribute enough offensively with some strong words. “I get the feeling that a lot of people don’t understand anything about football,” he told SBS6. “They watch it, but they don’t see it, so to speak. That’s not a bad thing, because it allows everyone to talk about it, but it’s the truth. “I hear people say I don’t play through balls, but that’s not true. They’re simply not paying attention to the game. It depends on the match, but also on the moment. You can play that through ball, but then it always goes to the goalkeeper. Yes, I think some people struggle to understand that. Maybe I should sit down with them sometime . It also depends on the moment itself. Whether someone is running or not, how they’re running… “I think that, in general, in the Netherlands we could value players a bit more. Of course, you can criticize if you think someone isn’t having a good game. That’s fine, and we have no problem with that. But often it’s exaggerated so much that they’re immediately labeled as a bad player.” De Jong and Netherlands now go on to play a final group game against Tunisia on Thursday.

Deniz Undav is Germany’s new World Cup hero
Photo by Jan Woitas/picture alliance via Getty Images Following their rout of Curaçao in the Group E opener, Germany faced their first true test of this World Cup in the form of a very talented and tough Ivory Coast team. And things did not start well, with the Elephants taking the lead and outplaying the Germans for the first hour of the contest. It was a painful but somewhat familiar sight for German fans given their nation’s recent history of group stage exits, and it looked as though they were headed for a nervous group finale before a new cult hero emerged: Deniz Undav came off the bench for the second game in a row, scored twice and led a furious comeback to seal Germany’s top spot in the group and a place in the knockout rounds for the first time in 12 years. The 29-year-old had to wait a long time for a chance with the national team, but an incredible season for Stuttgart made him undeniable ahead of the World Cup. But his role according to coach Julian Nagelsmann was pretty clear: be a backup striker, come off the bench in the second half, and try to score a goal. This was not supposed to be Undav’s team; after all this German generation has talents such as Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, Joshua Kimmich and Kai Havertz. But the games never lie, and Germany’s first two games have made it pretty obvious that Undav should be the very first name on the teamsheet from now on. He has the ability to not only score goals but make them for teammates, and use his unique frame to take on more physical defenders and relieve pressure for all the technicians around him. Undav makes the game easier for everyone, and he’s loving the responsibility of leading Germany back to the top of the game. This was not supposed to be Deniz Undav’s World Cup, but it’s quickly becoming just that. What a story. Welcome to the Brian Brobbey Era The Netherlands have had a history of great strikers, from Ruud van Nistelrooy to Dennis Bergkamp, Patrick Kluivert, Robin Van Persie and others. Memphis Depay is the all-time top scorer in the nation’s history which is an impressive feat on its own, but he’s well past his prime and the Dutch have been longing for a young striker to lead them to a new era. Enter Brian Brobbey: the 24-year-old announced himself as the next man up with an outstanding two-goal performance in the Netherlands’ 5-1 rout of Sweden in Houston. Brobbey had an excellent season in the Premier League for Sunderland and is an extremely awkward matchup for defenders: he has remarkable strength and plays like an old-school striker, and there are very few players of his type these days. Brobbey has likely won the starting spot over Donyell Malen and Memphis for the upcoming games, and Ronald Koeman learned from his mistakes against Japan and allowed his team to play free-flowing, high-pace attacking football. The Dutch will be dangerous in the knockout rounds, and may have finally found their number nine of the future. Japan make a statement without their best player The knee injury suffered by Take Kubo late in the opener against the Dutch is undoubtedly a cause for concern for Japan as they head into the knockout rounds, but the team’s performance in a 4-0 win against Tunisia in their second group game, the first without Kubo, was an outstanding display of their tactical and technical prowess as a unit. Kubo’s injury added to a list of major absences that includes midfield leader Wataru Endo and attacking stars Takumi Minamino and Kaoru Mitoma, and it remains to be seen how much their individual talent will be missed in bigger matchups. But the quality of coaching and the discipline and organization from those who remain are undeniable, and Japan are still remarkably entertaining even without Kubo. As for Tunisia, not even the new manager bounce of Hervé Renard’s debut as head coach was enough to give them any chance of putting up a fight, and they exit the World Cup as a truly gigantic mess. Curaçao make history as Ecuador’s nightmare continues Despite all of the correct criticisms and hesitations about the expanded format of this World Cup, there is no doubt that the 48-team field has allowed us to enjoy stories such as Cape Verde’s heroic draw against Spain and Curaçao’s historic night on Saturday as they became the smallest nation in history to earn a point in the World Cup. After a 7-1 defeat to Germany in the opener it seemed as though Curaçao would be easy opponents for an Ecuador side that were picked by many as a dark horse in the tournament, given their impressive South American Qualifying campaign and the world-class talent at the back and in midfield. But Curaçao dug deep, defended for their lives, and goalkeeper Eloy Room made the most saves by any goalkeeper in a single game in World Cup history. Ecuador also helped with some horrendous finishing, and their lack of efficiency in front of goal, which already cost them three points in the opener against the Ivory Coast, was the recipe for disaster in Kansas City. Ecuador now have to beat a red-hot Germany to stay alive in the race for third, and a group stage exit would be a true tragedy for one of the sexiest pre-tournament picks.

‘Stung’ Spain have digested shock start but know repeat is not an option
European champions were frustrated by Cape Verde and know there is little margin for error against Saudi Arabia Cape Verde are not the only ones to have kept Spain out at this World Cup. Turns out it was even harder to get past security on the gate of the team hotel in downtown Chattanooga. Two days after the 0-0 draw in their opener, Luis de la Fuente gave his players the day off, a chance to clear their heads and leave the disappointment behind. Lamine Yamal went to Nashville, Dani Olmo headed for Hamilton Place mall and Rodri strolled the Tennessee river with his partner. When Borja Iglesias got back before the 9pm curfew, they didn’t recognise him and wouldn’t let him in. “It was funny,” Iglesias said, standing at the side of the pitch at Kennesaw State University 30 miles north-west of Atlanta on Saturday, moments before the selección’s final session in preparation for their second game. “It happens to me in Spain, so how could it not happen here? I didn’t have the accreditation with me so I have to wait for someone to come and get me. Lamine laughed at me: ‘I love it, they didn’t let you in.’ The good thing is I told a couple of them and they said it had happened to them before too.” Continue reading...

Spain vs Saudi Arabia, World Cup 2026: Team News, Match Preview

This is only La Roja’s second game in the tournament but it already feels very important after the poor performance and the shocking result on Monday. Spain fell victim to familiar patterns of previous World Cup matches against defensive teams, and displayed a worrying lack of aggression and creativity up front. Luis de la Fuente and his troops are getting ready for a very similar challenge against a tough Saudi team that famously beat world champions Argentina in the group stage opener in 2022 and held Uruguay to a 1-1 draw in their opening game of this tournament, with a very resolute defensive display and an outstanding performance in goal by veteran Mohammed Alowais. The Saudis saw what Cape Verde did in the first match and will no doubt have a very similar approach, giving Spain the ball, sitting back and asking La Roja to break down a low block. De La Fuente is expected to start Lamine Yamal and give him the first 45 minutes on Sunday to see if the teenager can bring the necessary spark to the Spanish attack at the beginning of the game. Yamal’s introduction gave Spain life against Cape Verde and the hope is he can have an even bigger impact until he’s replaced at halftime, but another Blaugrana is also expected to get a start as Dani Olmo could replace Gavi on the left wing after a strong showing off the bench in the first game. Spain will have to play with much more urgency in this one to avoid another trap game and reach the big group finale against Uruguay in position to clinch top spot. Their attack will have to be faster, more dynamic and more efficient in front of goal, and Barça fans will hope they can build a comfortable early lead so the terrifying prospect of Yamal playing more than 45 minutes doesn’t become reality. Let’s dance. (Be careful, Lamine.) POSSIBLE LINEUPS Spain (4-3-3): Simón; Porro, Cubarsí, Laporte, Cucurella; Fabián, Rodri, Pedri; Yamal, Oyarzabal, Olmo Saudi Arabia (5-4-1): Alowais; Abdulhamid, Altambakti, Lajami, Alamri, Alharbi; Aljuwayr, Kanno, Alkhaibari, Aldawsari; Albrikan PREDICTION Bad opening games are par for the course for Spain in the majority of their World Cup campaigns, so no one will be panicking after Monday. And I believe the urgency of needing all three points and the extra minutes given to Yamal will be enough to secure a solid win in this one: 2-0 Spain.

De Jong went on to play an hour of the win but said afterwards that he’s still feeling some pain. “We played below par against Japan because Japan was very disciplined in defense. I wouldn’t say it was a stroll against Sweden, but we showed that we are dangerous,” he told NOS. “As for me, I’m feeling a bit of pain but it was manageable today. ‘He’s not 100%’ – Ronald Koeman explains decision to start Frenkie de Jong despite fitness issues

Ronald Koeman admitted before the game that De Jong was a doubt for the match due to some “minor complaints about his physical condition.” However, the Dutch boss opted to go with De Jong from the start and explained why before kick-off. “I don’t think he’s at 100%, but he’s in good enough shape to start the match. We still have the warm-up to be sure about it. So there’s still a slight uncertainty,” he told the media. “We considered the possibility that he might not start, but it’s not a problem. Of course, we want to field our best team, the one that seems strongest to us. The midfielder played all 90 minutes of the 2-2 draw with Japan but the Netherlands may have to cope without him on Saturday. “But Frenkie also has minor complaints about his physical condition. He also did practice with other players. But let’s see how he will be tomorrow. It is not clear. It is a question mark. I’m not sure, I don’t know. It is below his belly, his injury,” he told reporters. Koeman also revealed how he spoke to De Jong after the opening game about how he needs to improve. “I spoke to Frenkie after the game and I think he is doing a lot things right,” he added. “Tactically he is a very clever player. I’ve also discussed with Frenkie that when we are in the offence, he needs to get out there. “Sometimes he stays too low on the pitch and sometimes he could perform an action forward because then he is really fast. That’s the part where I think for himself and the team he has room for improvement. However, it would be going way too far to say ‘leave him out.’” Barcelona will be hoping it’s only a minor problem for De Jong, particularly after seeing Raphinha and Ronald Araujo struggle with injury at World Cup 2026.

The player has begun treatment and will be re-evaluated. We will let you know when we have more information,” said the CBF. Brazil team-mate Lucas Paqueta says the team are hoping it’s not serious but are concerned for Raphinha. “We were all worried, of course he’s going to feel it more. We hope it’s nothing serious, the least bad thing, we still need to wait for the tests. We all support him a lot so that it’s just a scare,” he said. There’s been speculation that Spain boss Luis de la Fuente could start Yamal against Saudi Arabia as the medical staff feel he’s ready to play 45 minutes. Yamal has now shared his thoughs on the situation. “I am fine, I feel good but it is very soon, it is unnecessary, I have an adaptation process, it is not the time to play a whole match, but I can play the minutes that the coach wants,” he said in an interview on RTVE. Yamal also says Spain have to beat Saudi Arabia after their underwhelming start to the tournament. “There was a fuss about a draw, and in the end, many teams have drawn; it doesn’t mean anything,” he added. “For me, winning 6-0 in the first match is pointless. Obviously, we have to win on Sunday because we’re among the favorites, and we have to win.” Sunday’s game takes place in Atlanta, with Uruguay facing Cape Verde in the other game in the group.

(Photo by Marvin Ibo Guengoer - GES Sportfoto/Getty Images) | Getty Images FC Barcelona superstar Lamine Yamal has been tipped to start for the Spanish national team as they hope to get their FIFA World Cup campaign back on track following a disappointing draw against Cape Verde. Yamal did not start that match as he was still recovering from an injury sustained playing for Barça. Spain dominated possession but were unable to score as goalkeeper Vozinha had a man-of-the-match performance for Cape Verde as the match ended 0-0. Spain boss Luis de la Fuente has now been asked if Yamal can play 45 minutes and offered up the following response. “That’s a very good question, but we’ll have to assess it,” he told Cope “Matches are often decided in the second half, so we’ll consider whether it’s more advantageous to push the pace a bit at the beginning or take advantage of the opponents’ fatigue and Lamine’s crucial final minutes. And that’s where we’ll make the decision. “You have an initial plan, but many things, the circumstances of the game, lead you to other situations. Lamine isn’t ready for 90 minutes, but he’s available to play. We’re not risking anyone. His optimal performance is around an hour, but it could be 60 or 53. We’ll see. There are fifty thousand details in a match that make you change.” Pedro Porro of Tottenham Hotspur is also expected to come in for Atlético de Madrid’s Marcos Llorente at right-back. Other changes could be in order, particularly in midfield. Gavi could also swap positions or be dropped as he started the first match out of position, playing as a winger. One player not expected to leave the starting XI is Pau Cubarsí. The 19-year-old started the first match and, though he did not have too much defending to do, was considered by pundits to have done a good job in the center of defense.

Jonathan David hits hat-trick as Canada crush Qatar, South Korea howler sends Mexico into knockouts and all the best goals from Day 8 of World Cup 2026
VANCOUVER, CANADA - JUNE 18: Jonathan David #10 of Canada celebrates with teammates after scoring during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group B match against Qatar at BC Place Vancouver on June 18, 2026 in Vancouver, Canada. (Photo by Emma Ottosen/ISI Photos/ISI Photos via Getty Images) | ISI Photos via Getty Images Day 8 of World Cup 2026 brought plenty more goals and saw co-hosts Mexico become the first team to qualify for the knockouts with a narrow victory over South Korea. There was also joy and heartbreak for Canada as Jesse Marsch’s side thumped Qatar thanks to a Jonathan David hat-trick but lost Ismael Kone to a horrific injury that overshadowed the match and saw tensions run high. Time to check out all the goalscoring action… Quickest goal of World Cup 2026 so far Thursday started off with Czechia’s Michal Sadilek scoring the fastest goal of World Cup 2026 so far by netting after just five minutes and eight seconds against South Africa. Adam Hlozek ran in behind and then pulled the ball back to the edge of the area to find Alexandr Sojka, who produced a brilliant lay-off for Sadilek to lash home. Teboho Mokoena stepped up and made no mistake from the spot to secure the draw that leaves both sides with just one point after two games played. Switzerland’s late, late show Switzerland secured a 4-1 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina but left it very late to seal all three points. However, when the opening goal did finally come, it was worth the wait as Johan Manzambi volleyed home a thumping finish to break the deadlock. Canada were leading 3-0 when Kone was caught late by Assim Omer Madibo and had to be stretchered off after a lengthy stoppage. Nathan Saliba curled home a free-kick to make it 4-0 before Canada added a fifth with 15 minutes remaining when Mohammad Al Mannai sliced Jacob Shaffelburg’s effort into his own goal. Mexican fans remain the best thing about the World Cup
Photo by Julio Cesar AGUILAR / AFP via Getty Images Mexico became the first nation to book a spot in the World Cup 2026 Round of 32 thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 win over South Korea in Guadalajara, and while the team’s overall peformance in the first two games has not been that impressive, it is impossible not to think they can go far after watching the amazing show from their home support. Thursday’s final game was tight and short on chances, but Mexico’s resolve and defensive discipline after scoring the only goal of the match was admirable. Captain Edson Álvarez was a monster at the back, and goalkeeper Raúl Rangel made sure of the points with a sensational double save in the 88th minute. But the true highlight of the night was the extraordinary support from the home crowd, who kicked every ball, made a remarkable amount of noise when South Korea had possession, and celebrated the final whistle like they’d won the actual World Cup Final, and not their second group stage match. It is not remotely controversial to say that Mexico has a closer and stronger relationship with the sport than the other two host nations, and that love for the game has been reflected in the brilliant atmospheres of every game played in the country so far, including the ones where the home team hasn’t played. From the way they support their team to how they’ve welcomed and embraced fans from other countries joining the party, Mexican fans are by far the biggest winners of the World Cup so far and we should all root for El Tri to go as far as possible so we can continue enjoying the best crowds in the tournament. Canada’s greatest World Cup day was profoundly bittersweet Canada’s first-ever World Cup win should have been simply perfect: they absolutely destroyed Qatar, won 6-0, saw all-time scorer Jonathan David get a hat-trick, and gave an extraordinary crowd in Vancouver plenty of reasons to smile. But it’s impossible to come out of this one thinking about anyone other than Ismaël Koné: the Canadian midfielder, arguably his nation’s best player through the first 150 minutes of their campaign, suffered a gruesome leg injury that ends his World Cup in the most painful way imaginable. Jesse Marsch’s team reacted incredibly well to the shock of seeing their teammate injured in such a bad way, and their overall performance showed they have what it takes to cause any team in this tournament trouble, especially with the added motivation of playing for their brother. Koné‘s absence on the pitch is massive, however: his chemistry with midfield partner Stephen Eustáquio and his ability to fill every gap imaginable defensively while also setting the pace of play with his passing are very difficult to replicate, and the last match in the group against Switzerland will already test their ability to replace their most talented and complete midfielder. This should have been Canada’s most unforgettable day in a World Cup. And in a very bad, very painful way, it is. Johan Manzambi: Remember the name Apologies to Freiburg fans, but it’s hard to see the 20-year-old Swiss midfielder staying too long at the German club after the World Cup. His electrifying performance off the bench helped unlock another very complicated match for Switzerland, who dominated much of the game against Bosnia and Herzegovina but struggled to finish their chances much like we saw in the group opener against Qatar. But Manzambi changed the entire feel of the game with his speed and smarts, and the finish for the first of his two goals was brilliant. He scored another and helped set up Rúben Vargas’ goal, and was by far the best player on the pitch from the moment he came on with 20 minutes to go. Manzambi is the dream modern midfielder with great positional versatility and a perfect blend of on-ball skills, off-ball movement and defensive prowess. He is already impacting big World Cup games at the age of 20, and he’ll only get better. Truly one to watch. The World Cup’s worst game so far was somehow still awesome Czechia and South Africa certainly don’t rank very high on the list of most talented teams in this tournament, and the lack of individual brilliance was on full display in the first meeting of the day in Atlanta. Czechia scored a goal that started with a long throw-in and South Africa’s equalizer came from the penalty spot, and the rest of the game featured a lot of fouls and not a lot of good play. But the beauty of the World Cup is that every game has such jeopardy that even the worst teams can be very compelling to watch given their desperation for points. South Africa’s late equalizer turned the match completely on its head with 10 minutes to go, and there was a whole lot of drama and nervous times for both sides at the end of the contest. It ended 1-1 and both teams are still alive in the race for third, and the desperate need to improve their position in the standings was exactly why the game ended up being so fascinating. If the same poorly-played, highly physical game with so little quality took place during club football season, very few people would actually bother to watch. But the World Cup forces you to care about even the worst games because they matter so much, and they often turn out to be pretty good regardless of how ugly they might look. There really is nothing like this tournament.

‘Best thing about him’ – Marc Cucurella reveals how Lamine Yamal has ‘changed a lot’
ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JUNE 15: Lamine Yamal #19 of Spain looks on before the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match between Spain and Cabo Verde at Atlanta Stadium on June 15, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Florencia Tan Jun/Getty Images) | Getty Images Marc Cucurella says Lamine Yamal has “changed a lot” since Euro 2024 and thinks the Barcelona star is far more mature even though he’s still only 18. Yamal is expected to make a big impact at World Cup 2026 and made his long-awaited return from injury as a late substitute in the 0-0 draw with Cape Verde. Spain and Yamal will be aiming to improve on that result next time out against Saudi Arabia, and Cucurella says he loves playing alongside the Barcelona star. “I’ve noticed he’s changed a lot since the Euros; I think he’s much more settled. He’s been in professional football for many years now, he knows what he has to do. I’m very happy to have him on our team, and I hope he’s recovered well from his injury and can help us a lot,” he told El Mundo. “It’s incredible. I went on vacation to Dubai and I also saw a Lamine billboard. But he handles it very well, very naturally, he’s still the same guy. More mature, but the same guy he was when he wasn’t such a star or so famous. That’s the best thing about him, how naturally he handles these things. And at that age, 18. I don’t think everyone is capable of managing that.” Yamal may have to settle for a place on the bench again on Sunday against Saudi Arabia, although he is expected to have a bigger role than he did against Cape Verde.

‘There’s a secret’ – How Lionel Messi made ‘flying’ start to World Cup 2026 with Argentina
(Photo by Steph Chambers - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images) | FIFA via Getty Images Lionel Messi showed once again why he’s the GOAT with an inspirational display to lead Argentina to a 3-0 win over Algeria in their first game of the tournament. The Argentina captain may be set to turn 39 next week but showed he’s still a class act with three goals which saw him tie Miroslav Klose as the World Cup’s all-time goalscorer. Argentine journalist Sergio Levinsky, who has written a biography on Messi and followed the national team at the last 11 World Cups, says he knows why Messi is in such great shape. “There’s a secret to his current condition. Messi underwent special, highly secretive preparation,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “Did you see Inter Miami’s last four matches? He was flying, literally. Even De Paul was impressed. He came on in a friendly against Iceland and changed everything. His objective was the World Cup.” Levinsky was also asked if Messi is driven by the aim of winning another World Cup and insists that’s not quite the case. “It’s not like that. For him, the dream of a lifetime was the World Cup in Qatar, and he achieved it,” he added. “This would be an added bonus, as you say. We call it ‘yapa’, something you don’t expect but if it comes, after you’ve already won everything, it’s wonderful…’” Messi and Argentina play their second group game on Monday against Austria in Dallas.

Will Lamine Yamal start against Saudi Arabia? Spain think Barcelona star ready to play 45 minutes
ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JUNE 15: Lamine Yamal of Spain looks on during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match between Spain and Cabo Verde at Atlanta Stadium on June 15, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Marvin Ibo Guengoer - GES Sportfoto/Getty Images) | Getty Images Spain boss Luis de la Fuente is reportedly pondering starting Barcelona star Lamine Yamal against Saudi Arabia on Sunday at World Cup 2026. Yamal came off the bench for 17 minutes in Spain’s disappointing 0-0 draw against Cape Verde in their opener but did look lively on his return from injury. According to Cope, the chances of Yamal starting against Saudi Arabia are “increasing” as Spain’s medical staff believe he is able to play 45 minutes. However, there is a risk of relapse which means Spain must be very careful with the teenager. Spain are also thinking about starting Yamal because De la Fuente is expected to make changes to his team after an underwhelming start to the tournament. Dani Olmo and Alex Baena are also options to come into the starting XI, with Gavi potentially dropping out. De la Fuente has said previously that Yamal is in “perfect shape” but Barcelona certainly won’t want to see the national team take any risks at all with the forward.

Barcelona star Ronald Araujo could miss Uruguay’s World Cup clash with Spain due to injury
MIAMI, FLORIDA - JUNE 15: Ronald Araujo #4 of Uruguay arrives before the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match between Saudi Arabia and Uruguay at Miami Stadium on June 15, 2026 in Miami, Florida. (Photo by Julian Finney - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images) | FIFA via Getty Images Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo has emerged as a doubt for Uruguay’s next two games at World Cup 2026 due to the injury he sustained before the start of the tournament. Araujo was forced to sit out Uruguay’s opener against Saudi Arabia and is not expected to return in time for their games against Cape Verde or Spain, according to Mundo Deportivo. The center-back has suffered a minor calf tear and although his recovery is progressing well he still needs time until he’s ready to return. Manager Marcelo Bielsa has accepted responsibility for Araujo’s injury after revealing he arrived for international duty with a “muscle problem which wasn’t serious” but then became worse during training. Group H is intriguingly poised with all to play for after the first round of matches which saw Spain held by Cape Verde and Uruguay draw with Saudi Arabia. Uruguay will be hoping they can progress to the knockout stage, with Araujo expected to be fit in time for the Round of 32 if Marcelo Bielsa’s side make it through.

Ronaldo says it’s time to ‘accept the fact’ that Lionel Messi is the GOAT after World Cup heroics
(Photo by Michael Steele/Getty Images) | Getty Images Ronaldo Nazario has told the football world to “stop hiding” and “accept the fact” that Barcelona legend Lionel Messi is the best player of all time. Messi opened up his World Cup 2026 campaign in style with a hat-trick against Algeria, offering a reminder of his incredible talent even at the grand old age of 38. Ronaldo says that there is no doubt whatsoever that Messi is the GOAT. “Records are made to be broken, and the person who breaks it doesn’t surprise any football fan in the world. Besides, Argentina is the current reigning champion of the competition,” he said, per TyC Sports. “Every time Messi steps onto the pitch, everything else becomes historic and elegant. It’s time for the world to stop hiding and accept the fact that he is the best player of all time. “He continues to perform every season, and at the World Cup, yet there are still doubts about him. It’s an unforgettable and historic night that will go down in history forever.” Former Barcelona striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic is also in no doubt. “I don’t believe we’ll see another Messi, because he’s special,” he told Fox. “It’s something natural. It seems like football was made for him. Everything he touches turns to gold. And he has a team ready to die for him. “Winning another World Cup won’t change his status as the greatest of all time. It will just be another trophy in the trophy room.”

Spain ‘took a gamble’ with Lamine Yamal as Barcelona star ‘played more than he should’ on return from injury
ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JUNE 15: Lamine Yamal of Spain looks on during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match between Spain and Cabo Verde at Atlanta Stadium on June 15, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Marvin Ibo Guengoer - GES Sportfoto/Getty Images) | Getty Images Lamine Yamal made his return to action on Monday at World Cup 2026 when he came on as a substitute in Spain’s 0-0 draw with Cape Verde. The teenager has been out since April with a hamstring injury but manager Luis de la Fuente confirmed before the match he was fit and available to play. There had been speculation that Yamal wouldn’t play the opening games of the World Cup, due to the risk of relapse, but he ended up playing 19 minutes against Cape Verde. Cadena SER say that Spain “took a gamble with Yamal” against Cape Verde and that “caution is necessary” because the risk of relapse remains high. “There wasn’t a spreadsheet, but there was a recommendation that he play as little as possible. He had to play more than he should have, which is why there were ongoing discussions between the medical staff and De la Fuente. Not because Lamine Yamal is in pain, but because he could relapse,” reports Antón Meana. Spain now face Saudi Arabia next in a game De la Fuente will be desperate to win after such a disappointing start to the competition. The Spain boss has insisted Yamal is in “perfect condition” but we’ll have to wait and see if he starts on the bench again or returns to the starting XI.

La Roja were held to a goalless draw by the minnows and put in a disappointing performance. Gavi has taken to social media to share his views and is focused on the team’s next game against Saudi Arabia. “Nobody said this was going to be easy, this is a World Cup,” he posted on Instagram. “The important thing is to be united in the face of adversity, keep believing in this team because we’re going to leave everything until the end. Now to work to win the next game, there is nothing else #VamosEspaña.” View this post on Instagram Gavi was something of a surprise starter against Cape Verde but Luis de la Fuente may well make changes to his team for their next game.
